The Information in this GUIDEBOOK: This document is a collection of materials for

participants of the Circle Puzzles Virtual Workshop with Chris Cavert. It is not intended for

resale or retraining in any form without permission from Chris Cavert. For inquiries email

Chris at the address below.

Disclaimer: Word and Picture Word Circle Puzzles can be addicting. Please seek professional

help if you find yourself speaking or dreaming in circles.

Important Consideration: Circle Puzzles are biased in connection to the developer(s) of each

particular puzzle. Sixth graders may not know word combinations adults might know (and vice

versa). An east-coaster might not know combinations developed by a west-coaster. A

Canadian might not know combinations created by an American. I’m sure you see the

consideration. One of the most creative ways I’ve found around this is to divide larger groups

into smaller groups who each make up their own puzzles for the whole group to solve. It takes

a bit more time, but the process is valuable.

Checklist for Preparing Circle Puzzles

for Virtual or Face-to-Face Programs This Checklist for using (Word or Picture Word) Circle Puzzles can be used to guide your thinking when planning virtual or face-to-face programs. Of course, include what's needed to meet the needs of your particular groups. Determine the kind of program you will be leading. (Here is more about 'kinds' of programs: https://www.onteambuilding.com/otbblog/a-typology-of-team-interactions)

• Team Bonding - Just having FUN! Put a progression of Puzzle Slides or printed Circle Puzzles together for some puzzle-solving fun interaction for the group.

• Team Building - It might be a new group that is just forming. Give them a progression of Puzzle Slides or Puzzle Cards that eases them into working together so they can start to discover how they want to interact - What behaviors do they want to see in the group? What behaviors do they want to avoid? They are 'discovering' things about each other.

• Team Development - Your group wants to work on something specific, like better communication, sorting out their problem-solving behaviors or recognizing social and emotional behaviors so they can build more empathy for each other. The deeper learning. Challenge them with a progression of easy, then challenging puzzles.

Determine how much time you will be using Circle Puzzles. You might have one session with your group, say an hour. After some introduction activities (15 minutes), you could then plan on 30 minutes working with the Puzzles then some time to Debrief the experience (15 minutes). Circle Puzzles can also be a part of a longer program with other activities. What's nice about Circle Puzzles is you can set an amount of time (suggestion - no more the 45 minutes of problem-solving) and fill that time with the Puzzles. Just make sure you have more puzzles than you need. (And, one Picture Word Circle Puzzle could take 45 minutes - you'll get a feel for the time it takes on Puzzles with more experience using them. Choose one or two outcomes you would like to pull from the Circle

Puzzles experience. Circle Puzzles can bring up some powerful talking points (see Possible Outcomes When Using Circle Puzzles). One outcome focus can really make an impact. However, depending on your group's needs, you can certainly pull out more from the adventure. For example, talking about helping goes well with leadership. Talking about emotions (e.g., frustration) goes well with talking about building trust. And of course, there are the behaviors that show up during the experience you didn't plan on (e.g., getting angry) that you will want to address - we're always open to what needs to be done. Determine how you will debrief the Circle Puzzles. If you're playing virtually, create the Debriefing Slide(s) you will want your group to work with (suggestion - keep the debriefing experience on one Slide). There are examples you can use - literally - included in

Page 6: The Ultimate Slide Deck of Word & Picture Word Circle Puzzles · 2020-06-20 · Circle Puzzles (Google) Slide Deck are available to you in a print-n-play version below. Playing face-to-face,

your presenter's deck or use the examples to inspire you to create what you need for your particular focus. If you are presenting face-to-face, will you use a prop to help you debrief or use particular questions that address the specific outcome(s) your group is working on. Planning ahead gives you some peace of mind. And, of course, you can always 'pivot' your plan if needed. We're always in the moment. Get your Circle Puzzles ready. If you are presenting virtually, create the Deck of Circle Puzzle Slides you need for your program. This could be a separate Slide Deck with only Circle Puzzle materials or a part of a Slide Deck included with other Slides with different activities (suggestions - you could make a copy of the participant Slide Deck you have and then delete the Slides you don't need. Or, you can copy and paste Slides into a new Deck.) If you are face-to-face with your group, you will need a printed copy (with the word or picture cards cut out) of all the puzzles you plan to use. And, don't forget the Answer Keys. (NOTE: Be sure to include an example of Circle Puzzles, especially if it's a group's first time. You can show your group how the words or pictures go together or have your group interact with you, calling out combinations, as you show them.) Get your Presenter Slide Deck ready (when presenting virtually). What Slides will you need to prepare your group for the Circle Puzzles experience? If your group is new to the virtual context, you might need some 'practice with the tech' Slides. If your group is comfortable with the technology, then maybe they just need the Slides on how to work the words and images related to the Circle Puzzles. SUPER IMPORTANT: Include in your Presenter Slide Deck the Slide numbers you want your participants to go in their Deck after you send them to Breakout Rooms (when using Breakouts). Your Presenter Slide Deck numbers will not match your Participant's Slide Deck. Create the Participant Slide Deck Links Page. Your participants will need to access the Participant Slide Deck to play. First, determine how many Breakout Rooms you will need (plus a few extras). Second, you will need to make one copy of the (Master) Participant Slide Deck for each room - 'Rename' each of these copies, starting with the number of the room (e.g., #1 Breakout Room). Be sure to keep the Master Participant Slide Deck for yourself to reference during the program. Then, you need to create a way for each group, or each participant in a group, to access their Slide Deck. This could be a PDF document you send them ahead of time, a website page where you provide them the link, or put the link for each Breakout Room in the chat. NOTE: Be sure not to give access to the Participant Slide Deck too early, you might now want them to pre-access the Deck. Okay, you have the major steps to prepare. Remember, you can always ask for 'Help!'

Possible Outcomes When Using Circle Puzzles

Circle Puzzles have a wide range of possible outcomes appropriate for groups ages 15 and older. (However, don’t let this stop you from using the puzzles with younger groups). First and foremost, for me, they are just darn fun to solve. They are also great fun (and sometimes challenging) to create. As a community building or teambuilding tool, I have been able to facilitate discussions (debriefing or processing sessions) around the following ideas or concepts:

Helping - How much “help” did players need? What kinds of help showed up during the

activity? Did anyone ask for help? Who was asked? Who was available to offer help? What are some reason we have for not asking for help? What possible consequences are there when people ask for too much help?

Connections - (It's fun to explore this Outcome in both the literal and metaphorical sense.)

Create a list by continuing to ask: What connections did you make during the activity? Keep asking this question as a way to move the group into the metaphorical so you can discuss the concept of 'connecting' with each other and why this can be important. In what ways can we connect with each other? What strengthens connections? What weakens connections? What will we want to do when we start seeing and feeling that our connections aren't going the way we would like?

Privilege - This Outcome can be tied into the Missing Word Circle Puzzles when you're

playing, "there is only one answer." (Be mindful, the right group at the right time.) When there is only 'one' correct answer, and your other answer is wrong, how does this relate to privilege? There are some things that have only one answer (e.g., 2+2=4). In other cases, some people believe there is only one correct answer, but others believe there are alternative answers. What is your position on this? What can be done about this - what choices do you have? Do you have 'privileges' others don't? What do you do about this? Is privilege a good thing, a bad thing, or just a thing? What does it matter? When doesn't it matter? (Remember, be mindful when going down this road. Travel on purpose!)

Community - How do you define community? What is the difference between a group and

a community? Is community important to you? In what ways? How does a group build a community - what are the behaviors of a community?

Mindset - What does it mean to have a 'Mindset?' What was your mindset going into these

Puzzling activities? What is your mindset about working together in a virtual setting? How does mindset influence your work? Can you choose your mindset or is this out of your hands? Share your thinking about this? If you are 'bad' at puzzles, is this a mindset or something else? What is it? Do others influence your mindset? In what ways?

Roles and Responsibilities - What roles and responsibilities (R & Rs) where you aware

of before starting to solve the puzzles? What R & Rs did you take during the activity? Were you 'assigned' to them or did you volunteer? What roles were missing and what did you do about this? What responsibilities were a part of each role taken in the group? How well did you perform your R & Rs? What influenced your performance?

Communication - In what ways did the group communicate during the activity? Did you

agree ahead of time (during planning?) over how you were going to communicate with each other or did the communication behaviors just evolve? What do you think about how the communication behaviors were established? How were these ways helpful or un-helpful? What did you like the most about how you communicated with each other? What did you like the least about how you communicated with each other? What do you want to do now, in relation to communication, as you move forward together?

Decision-Making - What decisions had to be made during the activity? Who made them?

Was the decision-making in your group fair? Explain your thinking about this 'fairness.' For you, when is making the decisions important? When is it not important? When working with this group, how do you want decision-making to look (and sound) like? When will it matter?

Flexibility - This is another Outcome that is more powerful in the metaphorical context. After

making a word combination are players willing to split up the combination (“walk away” from a connection) in order to try another connection? Are players willing to let go and try other ideas? What does it mean to be mentally flexible? What are the positives and negatives about being flexible? Share an example of inflexibility. Share an example of being mentally flexible.

Energy Level - What are the ‘ebbs’ and ‘flows’ of the activity over time? What contributes to

these fluctuations? Do you always have a choice about how much energy you put into something? Share your thinking about this? When you have limited energy, what behavior choices do you have? Will it be important to let your group know about your energy level or is it 'none of their business?' Share your thinking about this position.

Social Emotional Learning - (A great site for more information: CASEL.org) Each of the

Five Core Competencies (Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social-Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision-Making) can be connected with Circle Puzzles experiences. Participants can define the emotions they have experienced (e.g., during the younger ages). They can share how they 'managed' (or did not manage) their behaviors stemming from their emotions. You can also get into how participants were aware (or unaware) of others in the group and how much they picked up upon other's needs. Relationship-building can be focused in on during the group's work together by asking what they are doing (behaviors) to build relationship and what they are doing to prevent relationships. Then, of course, you can explore with your group all the specific emotions that came up during the activity and how they influenced group outcomes. (You will want to explore the facets of SEL in order to prepare for what you want to work on.)

Finding One’s Place - What does it mean to, 'Find one's place?' When someone found

his/her “spot” (or thought they found it) what was the activity like for them? What did they think about and/or what did they do? What was it like not to find your 'place' during the activity? Did you want to find a place or didn't this matter to you? Share your thinking about this? Did you happened to get kicked out of your place? What was this like for you? What did you do about it?

Success and Failure - Was the group successful? How was your success measured? Are

there any other ways to measure success? What’s the difference between 'product' success (the end result) and 'process' success (what they did during the activity)? Did the group fail at any point during the activity? What failures did you recognize? Looking back, what failures went unrecognized? How did the group and/or individuals react to failure during or after the activity? How did these reactions affect the group?

Progression - What would it be like to try the hardest puzzle first and an easy puzzle last?

How does the idea of 'progression' fit into the lives or the participants? How do we approach something that is new? When we get 'stuck' doing something new, what choices do we face?

Alternative Solutions or Ways to Approach a Challenge - How were ideas shared

within the group? Did the group explore/try more than one way to approach the challenge? Is it possible to have more than one answer to a challenge? Always?

Time Constraints – How did “time” play out in the activity? Was time related to any

experiences of stress? How was the time stress managed? How does time play out in our lives? How do we manage time stressors?

Consensus - Does/did everyone agree with specific word combinations? How did you know?

Did everyone agree with the answer before asking for/checking the 'right' answer? How did you know everyone agreed? These ideas, as we're finding out, only scratch the surface of possible Outcomes. As the facilitator of the activity (that’s you), probe the behaviors that surface during the group’s interaction. They can show you what to explore and ask questions about. One of our tasks, as educators, is to help and guide our groups into conversations that are important to them so they can recognize the learnings that can help them grow and move in healthy directions.

An Introduction to Circle Puzzles

All Circle Puzzles can be used as an entertaining sit-down challenge for one or more players,

or a team building challenge for groups. No matter how you use them, Circle Puzzles (Words

& Pictures) are a true test of 'arrangement' for any puzzler or team.

To give credit, where credit is due, I (Chris Cavert) first learned about Word Circle Puzzles from

Chip Schlegel – a fellow team builder and experiential educator. He told me one day, “run with

it” to see where these puzzles can go. So, this is me continuing to run...

About the Word Circle Puzzles Starter Kit

The Word Circle Puzzles Starter Kit can be found as a download at the FUNdoing.com/Store.

The kit includes a lot more details about the nuances of this type of team building activity (some

basic information is included below). The Starter Kit also includes 12 team building

Presentation Ideas, six (easier) 'starter puzzles to introduce your group to how the puzzles

work, and 12 (full length) puzzles from 18- to 22-word cards in length. The Starter Kit is the go-

to foundation for teambuilding with Word Circle Puzzles.

About Picture Word Circle Puzzles (PWCP)

The next level of circle puzzling is using picture (and now icon) cards instead of word cards.

You can find the downloadable print-n-play kit at the: FUNdoing.com/Store (If you would like

a sample of a Picture Word Circle Puzzle, you can get a downloadable set of picture cards

and instructions here: http://www.fundoing.com/blog/picture-word-circle-puzzle-set-1)

Word Circle Puzzles in this Kit

As a Bonus to the Circle Puzzles Virtual Workshop, all the Word Circle Puzzles in the Ultimate

Circle Puzzles (Google) Slide Deck are available to you in a print-n-play version below. Playing

face-to-face, using the word cards, is another great teambuilding option. And, if you need to

team build while safely distancing, print single sets of word cards, distribute the cards to your

participants safely and then work out the puzzles in a way where people are safely distancing.

Then, recycle the paper. You could also laminate the Circle Puzzle cards and then sanitize

before and after play.

Here is the basic Overview covering what you need to know about Word Circle Puzzles. (The

Word Circle Puzzles Starter Kit has complete details.)

Below you will find the Answer Keys as well as the word cards for all the puzzles from the

Ultimate Circle Puzzles Slide Deck. You will also find Help Cards and blank Help Cards for

added dynamics. You can print out a copy of everything you need, laminate and cut out the

word cards (Help Cards and Blank Cards) and be ready to play whenever the right time

presents itself.

You can also simply print out the cards you need for an upcoming group, cut them out and

distribute when ready. In this way, you don’t have to worry about getting all of the cards back

– you can recycle the paper or use the cards for some other creative purpose.

You will notice on the cards in this Guidebook, there is a reference number in the bottom right

corner. For example, WC1-8 refers to Word Circle puzzle #1 with 8 words. The WC1 also refers

back to this puzzle in the Answer Key. IL2-10 refers to Invisible Link puzzle #2 with 10 words

and refers to IL2 in the Answer Key. Finally, the MWs are Missing Link puzzles.

Help Cards You will find in the word card section below, two sheets of Help Cards (including

some blank cards for additions or replacements). The Help Cards are a way for the group to

ask for help (if this is part of the Outcomes plan). When they give you one of their Help Cards

you can provide the answer or resource related to the card. For example, some answers are a

simple “yes” or “no,” others are the solution to a word combination. Another card allows access

to a dictionary (so, if you want to provide this card you’ll want a 'hard copy' or 'digital' dictionary

with you). There are times, depending on the group’s objectives, that I require them to reach

consensus over relinquishing a Help Card. There are other times when I simply don’t place any

restrictions on the Help Cards. You set the parameters on how the cards will work – be sure to

share the parameters with your group. (NOTE: I print my Help Cards on green - for GO - paper.)

Before playing, hand out a number of Helps Cards to the group based on the level of challenge

for which they are ready - more Help Cards might make the challenge easier. You also don’t

have to offer any of the Help Cards at all. You could even ask the group how many Help Cards

they think they might need in order to be successful. Just another tool to work with.

Level of Difficulty “Word Combination Distracters” (WCDs) will give you an indication of the

challenge level of a puzzle. In the Answer Keys (and on the puzzles in the virtual slide deck)

you will see something like this: 3 WCDs. This means there are at least three other word pair

combinations that can work but are not part of the puzzle's solution. The common WCDs

recognized are included under the answer to each puzzle. The higher the WCD number, the

more challenging the puzzle (generally).

Specialty Puzzles

Invisible Link Puzzles The IL puzzles in the Answer Keys are Invisible Link Word Circle

Puzzles. The first word of the answer is enlarged and underlined. Before giving your group one

of these puzzles, take out the word card that is underlined (in the Answer Key). Basically, what

you will tell your group is that they must figure out what word you have held back. The cards

they have will make, what is called, a word chain - a line of connected words. The card you are

holding will connect the two ends of the line together to complete the Word Circle Puzzle.

NOTE: Groups might discover a different word that does connect the two ends together (it's

possible), so you can determine if they have succeeded or if they need to keep working to

discover the word you are holding.

Missing Word The MW puzzles in the Answer Keys are Missing Word Circle Puzzles. The first

word of the answer is bold and enlarged. Like the Invisible Link puzzles, you are going to take

out this bolded word before giving the rest of the word cards to your group. The cards the group

receives will actually make a completed word circle. After figuring out this first circle puzzle, the

group is then challenged to figure out the word you are holding. This word fits between two

words in the first puzzle to make a different Word Circle Puzzle (no other cards need to be

changed, just add in the missing word). And, there might be more than one answer, so you can

determine if they have succeeded, or will they need to discover the 'right' answer (you're

holding).

Answer Key: After printing out your set of the Word Circle Puzzle cards (below), be sure to

print and then keep a hard copy of the Answer Key with your word card sets. If appropriate,

you could have the Answer Key available to you in digital form as well.
