About  The  Author  I`m  Tor  Refsland  and  I  live  in  Norway.  Besides  from  wrestling  with  polar  bears  and  swimming  with  penguins,  I  have  always  been  very  dedicated  to  personal  development  and  how  to  con, nuous  improve  my  life.

What  made  the  biggest  impact  in  my  life,  was  when  I  through  trial  and  errors,  cracked  the  code  and  discovered  the  blue  print  on  how  to  improve  my  life  through  goal  seUng,  ,me  management  and  self-‐discipline.

When  I  was  18  I  asked  my  dad  if  he  could  share  with  me  some  of  his  struggles  in  life,  so  I  didn`t  have  to  do  the  same  mistakes  as  he  did.  He  just  looked  at  me,  started  chuckling  and  pa:ed  me  on  the  back,  saying:  "No,  son,  this  you  have  to  find  out  for  yourself.”

Of  course,  I  have  learned  a  lot  by  crawling  uphill  on  glass  shards  and  banging  my  head  against  the  wall  (more  than  one  ,me).  But  I  can`t  imagine  how  much  further  I  would  have  come,  if  I  just  got  a  li:le  bit  of  guidance  in  the  start. I  have  a  burning  passion  to  help  other  people  and  I  have  been  mentoring  people  for  the  last  decade.  From  now  on,  I  will  do  it  on  a  much  bigger  scale,  so  I  can  reach  and  help  more  people.A  smart  person  learns  from  his  own  experience,  a  very  smart  person  learns  from  other  people`s  experience. Below  are  some  of  the  goals  I  have  accomplished  through  goal  se<ng  and  =me  management:-‐  Bought  the  first  apartment  at  the  age  of  23  years  old,  and  the  first  vaca,on  house  in  Thailand  at  the  age  of  24(has  been  sold)   -‐  Black  belt  in  WTF  Taekwondo  in  2,5  years  by  training  2  ,mes  a  week  (average  ,me  is  3-‐3,5  years)-‐  Became  a  store  manager  with  IT  responsibility  for  the  biggest  mar,al  arts  distributor  in  the  country  of  age  22,  and  became  the  head  of  logis,cs  for  the  same  company  of  age  24

CHAPTER 1: Introduction

The Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for Smart Entrepreneurs

CHAPTER  1:  Introduc=on  There  was  a  point  in  my  life  when  I  was  constantly  overworked,  always  stressed  and  I  didn’t  have  much  ,me  to  spend  with  the  people  I  hold  dearest,  my  family  and  friends.  In  the  few  occasions  when  I  was  with  them,  I  was  seldom  present.  I  too  was  suffering  from  the  mul, task  epidemic,  which  resulted  in  doing  several  tasks  with  a  below  average  result.

I  didn`t  have  ,me  to  relax  and  recharge  my  ba:eries,  and  I  was  constantly  moving  from  loca,on  A  to  loca,on  B,  never  truly  enjoying  the  moment  to  its  fullest.  I  didn’t  even  have  the  energy  to  work  out.

All  the  ac,vi,es  I  had  to  do,  was  for  someone  else,  not  for  myself.  I  felt  that  I  spent  most  of  my  ,me  working  my  ass  off  for  someone  else`s  dream  (the  stockholders  of  the  company  I  was  working  for).  I  was  trapped  in  the  rat  race.  There  was  certain  moments  when  just  the  thought  of  the  never  ending  growing  to  do  lists,  gave  me  trouble  breathing… To  be  quite  frankly,  I  was  not  happy  with  my  life.  My  life  sucked… I  knew  that  I  was  in  deep  shit  (excuse  my  French),  and  that  I  had  to  do  something  about  it.  So  what  were  my  challenges  in  the  start? -‐  I  didn`t  know  exactly  what  I  did  wrong  (blinded  by  my  own  situa,on)-‐  I  didn`t  know  how  to  fix  my  situa,on  (you  don`t  know  what  you  don`t  know) -‐  I  didn`t  know  where  to  find  informa,on  to  solve  my  problems -‐  There  is  too  much  informa,on  on  the  internet  (it`s  an  informa, onal  jungle) -‐  I  didn`t  have  any  role  models  who  was  already  doing  what  I  needed  to  do-‐  I  didn`t  have  a  best  prac, ces  system  to  follow  (I  didn`t  have  any  system  at  all)-‐  I  didn`t  have  anyone  to  be  accountable  for   Aker  several  years  of  studying,  prac, cing  and  being  out  in  the  trenches,  I  have  through  trial  and  errors  discovered  what  actually  works  and  what  doesn’t.  I  have  cracked  the  code  and  totally  transformed  my

life.  I  am  now  in  a  situa,on  where  I  don`t  longer  work  for  others,  and  for  the  first  ,me  in  my  life,  I  feel  that  I  am  in  total  control  of  my  own  ,me,  life  and  future.  And  last,  but  not  least,  I  am  very  happy.I  have  extracted  the  knowledge  from  books,  videos,  mp3`s,  my  own  and  others  people`s  experience  and  condensed  the  informa,on  into  this  simple  eBook.  But  do  NOT  be  fooled  by  the  size  of  the  eBook!  This  eBook  holds  the  blue  print  on  how  to  improve  your  life  through  goal  se<ng  and  self-‐discipline.   When  I  was  trapped  in  the  rat  race  with  no  map,  direc,on  or  final  des,na,on,  I  would  have  given  a  lot  for  this  eBook.   I  could  easily  have  charged  $37  for  this  eBook,  but  I  am  giving  to  you  for  free.  All  I  ask  of  you,  is  that  you  take  ac,on,  and  make  the  changes  you  want  in  your  life! Is  that  a  deal?  Great!

By  using  the  techniques  and  systems  found  in  this  eBook,  you  will  be  able  to  set  correct  goals,  so  you  can  become  more  produc=ve,  work  smarter,  work  less,  be  more  present,  be  less  stressful  and  become  happier.   !

CHAPTER 2: Why Most People Fail Reaching Their

Goals

Page 11: The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs ...€¦ · The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs How To Kill Procrastination In 7 Days Before It Kills

The Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for Smart Entrepreneurs

CHAPTER  2:  Why  Most  People  Fail  Reaching  Their  Goals  The  human  species  is  in  general  lazy.  Most  people,  including  myself,  are  interested  in  achieving  the  best  results  with  the  least  amount  of  effort.  That  is  also  a  rather  smart  approach  (I  said  we  were  lazy,  not  dumb.)  The  reason  for  us  to  start  and  actually  complete  a  certain  type  of  ac,on  is  based  either  on  the  avoidance  of  pain  or  the  pursuit  of  pleasure.  Studies  have  shown  that  the  avoidance  of  pain  is  the  strongest  mo,va,on  of  the  two  factors.  So  when  it  comes  to  ac,ons,  we  are  kind  of  simple  creatures.  For  instance,  let`s  say  that  my  girlfriend  told  me  to  vacuum-‐clean  our  apartment.  I  would  probably  not  do  it,  at  least  not  right  away.  Two  things  could  happen:  1.  She  would  con, nue  to  ask  me  to  do  it  (nagging  me,  but  I  could  tolerate  that)2.  She  would  perhaps  be  so  fed  up  by  nagging  at  me,  that  she  would  just  do  it  herself  (yes,  I  would  indeed  be  able  to  handle  that  consequence  as  well)

So  If  I  didn’t  see  the  pleasure  in  having  a  vacuum-‐cleaned  apartment,  and  I  could  stand  the  pain  (consequences)  if  I  didn`t  perform  the  ac,on,  the  ac,on  would  not  be  performed.

If  we  modify  the  example  above;  it  is  Friday  akernoon  and  my  girlfriend  calls  me  and  tells  me  that  her  mother  and  her  is  on  their  way  to  our  apartment,  and  they  are  30  minutes  away. Well  only  one  thing  would  happen:-‐  I  would  immediately  stop  the  ac,vity  I  was  doing  and  perhaps  be  stunned  in  10  seconds,  while  my  mental  modus  transformed  from  lazy  to  “I-‐don`t-‐want-‐my-‐mother-‐in-‐law-‐to-‐see-‐me-‐as-‐the-‐lazy-‐person-‐I-‐really-‐am”,  then  I  would  vacuum-‐clean  the  apartment  in  no  ,me.In  the  last  scenario  the  avoidance  of  pain  is  so  strong,  that  I  will  rather  perform  the  task  than  experience  the  consequences. Our  mind  and  behavior  is  controlled  by  feelings,  not  logic.  Have  you  ever  said  something  construc,ve  and  really  brilliant  while  losing  your  temper  and  having  a  heated  discussion  with  someone  close?  I  didn`t  think  so.  Welcome  to  the  club. Why  do  many  people  spend  more  money  than  they  usually  do  when  they  are  not  feeling  good  about

themselves?  Because  they  have  an  illusion  that  they  will  feel  be:er  if  they  buy  another  product  that  they  don`t  really  need.  Will  they  feel  be:er?  Yes,  but  only  for  a  short  period  of  ,me.  Then  they  repeat  the  process. Why  do  successful  business  people  say  that  you  should  never  take  an  important  decision  when  feelings  are  involved?  Because  your  feelings  cloud  your  judgment.  You  may  now  say:  OK,  Tor,  I  got  the  point.  So  what  does  this  have  to  do  with  people  failing  to  reach  their  goals? I  am  coming  to  that.  Brian  Tracy  says  that  the  key  to  success  is  to  define  what  you  want,  then  find  out  what  you  need  to  sacrifice  in  order  to  achieve  it,  and  last,  but  not  least,  find  out  if  you  are  willing  to  do  the  sacrifice  in  order  to  get  what  you  want. Person  A  and  person  B  are  both  track  and  field  runners.  They  have  the  same  weight,  height  and  physical  condi, oning.  Both  have  the  same  knowledge,  skill  set,  training  plan,  and  even  the  same  coach.  They  have  the  same  goal:  in  30  days  to  run  a  certain  distance  under  a  specific  ,me.Person  A  achieves  the  goal  and  person  B  doesn`t. Why  doesn`t  person  B  achieve  his  goal,  when  he  had  the  same  chance  to  reach  the  goal  as  person  A? The  simple  answer  is,  person  B  wasn`t  willing  to  perform  the  necessary  ac,ons  in  order  to  reach  the  goal.  If  he  had  just  followed  the  plan  as  person  B  did,  he  would  have  reached  the  goal  as  well.  So  the  important  ques=on  is:  why  didn`t  person  B  want  to  perform  the  necessary  ac=ons  to  achieve  the  goal?   His  true  reason  could  be  one  or  several  of  the  answers  below:

-‐  He  had  not  par, cipated  in  the  goal  seUng  process,  and  therefor  had  no  ownership  to  the  goal-‐  He  didn`t  think  the  goal  was  realis,c-‐  He  didn`t  agree  with  the  training  plan-‐  He  didn`t  think  that  he  had  the  right  skill  set-‐  He  didn`t  think  he  had  the  right  physical  condi, oning  -‐  He  didn`t  have  a  strong  mo,va,on  (the  consequences  of  not  reaching  the  goal  or  reaching  the  goal,  didn`t  trigger  strong  enough  emo, ons  for  him  to  decide  and  keep  on  doing  it  un,l  he  reached  the  goal).

In  the  next  chapter  we  will  talk  about  the  secret  behind  a  good  goal  seUng  process.

CHAPTER 3: How A Good Goal Setting System Can

Save Your Life

Page 15: The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs ...€¦ · The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs How To Kill Procrastination In 7 Days Before It Kills

The Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for Smart Entrepreneurs

CHAPTER  3:  How  A  Good  Goal  Se<ng  System  Can  Save  Your  Life  Have  you  ever  tried  to  bake  a  cake  for  the  first  ,me  without  a  recipe?  If  so,  did  it  taste  good?  There  is  a  reason  why  people  buy  cake  baking  books.  It  contains  a  road  map  on  how  to  accomplish  the  desired  outcome  –  a  well  tas,ng  cake.  The  following  will  be  answered  in  the  recipe:

1.   What  cake  to  bake

2.   Which  type  of  ingredients  to  use

3.   In  what  order  the  ingredients  are  going  to  be  used

4.   How  long  the  cake  has  to  be  in  the  oven  (depends  of  course  on  what  cake)

Even  though,  you  have  the  world`s  best  recipe  for  a  cake,  and  you  follow  it  word  by  word,  it  is  s,ll  not  a  100%  probability  that  the  cake  will  taste  wonderful.  However,  you  will  at  least  be  right  equipped  for  the  mission  at  hand.

The  same  goes  for  goal  seUng.  If  you  are  going  to  set  and  reach  your  goals,  you  need  a  recipe.

A  good  goal  se<ng  system  has  to  contain  the  following:  1.  What  goal  to  set 2.  Which  type  of  tasks  to  perform3.  In  what  order  the  tasks  has  to  be  completed 4.  How  long  it  will  take

By  having  a  good  goal  seUng  process,  there  is  not  a  100%  guarantee  that  you  will  achieve  your  goal.  Nonetheless,  you  will  s,ll  have  a  much  higher  probability  to  reach  your  goal,  than  if  you  were  doing  it  by  your  own  imagina,on.

Ea,ng  a  lot  of  unhealthy  food  can  ruin  your  health,  and  in  worst  case  shorten  your  life.  The  same  goes  for  not  following  a  plan  when  it  comes  to  your  own  life,  or  making  bad  life  choices.

I  believe  that  you  deserve  the  best  that  life  can  offer,  and  that  you  should  do  everything  you  can  in  order  to  become  the  best  person  you  can  become.  Doing  anything  less,  would  give  you  regrets  and  will  result  in  a  life  that  you  may  not  be  completely  sa,sfied  with.

In  the  following  chapters,  I  will  be  introducing  you  to  a  familiar  system  (SMART  goals)  and  another  system  that  is  more  unknown  (DUMB  goals).

CHAPTER 4: SMART Goals

Page 18: The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs ...€¦ · The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs How To Kill Procrastination In 7 Days Before It Kills

The Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for Smart Entrepreneurs

CHAPTER  4:  SMART  Goals  Let`s  start  with  the  defini,on.

What  is  SMART  goals? It  is  a  method  based  on  the  following  acronyms:S  –  specificM  –  measurableA  –  a:ainableR  –  relevantT  –  ,me-‐based  I  will  elaborate  a  li:le  bit  on  the  acronyms  above.  Let`s  use  the  metaphor  that  you  and  me  are  on  a  mission  together,  and  our  mission  is  to  move  some  goods  from  point  A  to  point  B  in  an  es,mated  ,me. We  start  in  a  country,  let`s  say  USA  (point  A)  and  we  are  going  to  travel  to  another  country  (point  B).  Specific  –  where  are  we  going? If  we  don`t  know  exactly  WHERE  we  are  going,  we  will  probably  not  reach  our  des,na,on  (at  least  not  in  the  most  effec,ve  way  possible). 1.  Country  –  if  we  know  that  our  final  des,na,on  is  Canada,  it  won`t  help  us  much  at  all  (it  is  too  generic,  and  Canada  is  a  very  LARGE  country)2.  State  –  if  we  got  the  addi, onal  informa,on  that  our  des,na,on  is  Quebec  (it  s,ll  wouldn`t  do  us  much  good)3.  City  –  if  we  were  told  that  the  City  was  named  Montreal  (it`s  s,ll  not  specific  enough  for  us  to  find  the  des,na,on)

4.  Post  Address  –  If  we  knew  the  exact  post  address,  we  would  be  able  to  arrive  at  the  correct  des,na,on

www.timemanagementchef.com 18

Page 19: The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs ...€¦ · The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs How To Kill Procrastination In 7 Days Before It Kills

The Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for Smart Entrepreneurs

You  get  the  point;  the  more  specific  the  goal  is,  the  be:er  it  is.

Measurable  -‐  how  far  from  the  des=na=on?  If  a  goal  is  not  measurable,  you  will  not  know  how  you  are  doing  compared  to  your  goal,  and  you  will  not  know  when  you  have  reached  it.  Delivering  a  package  of  goods  to  a  specific  address  in  Montreal  is  measurable.  Thanks  to  map  and  naviga,on  systems,  we  can  measure  our  remaining  distance  to  the  final  des,na,on.  And  when  we  enter  the  address,  we  will  know  we  have  reached  our  goal.   AXainable  –  is  it  realis=c? If  we  think  the  goal  is  a:ainable,  we  will  be  mo,vated  to  start  on  the  journey  and  most  likely  complete  the  mission  (goal). On  the  other  hand,  if  we  think  that  the  goal  is  unrealis,c,  we  will  never  truly  be  commi:ed  to  complete  the  mission,  since  we  deep  down  inside,  know  that  it`s  not  a  realis,c  goal.!Relevant  –  will  this  ac=on  bring  us  closer  to  the  des=na=on? If  the  ac,ons  you  are  going  to  do,  doesn`t  bring  you  any  closer  to  the  goal,  it  is  counter-‐produc,ve  and  a  total  waste  of  ,me  and  effort. Let`s  say  that  you  want  to  lose  weight.  If  your  key  ac,vi,es  are  to  sit  in  front  of  the  TV  watching  reruns  of  bad  reality  series  while  ea,ng  potato  chips  and  drinking  soda,  it`s  not  only  waste  of  ,me  and  effort,  it`s  directly  counter-‐produc,ve  and  will  take  you  further  from  your  goal,  even  before  you  have  started  out.

I  will  talk  more  about  analyzing  key  ac,vi,es  and  how  to  change  your  habits  in  order  to  reach  your  goal  quicker  in  another  post.

Time-‐based  –  when  will  we  arrive  at  our  des,na,on? SeUng  a  deadline  is  important.  When  are  we  going  to  arrive  at  our  des,na,on?  The  more  specific,  the  be:er  it  is.  If  we  are  going  to  arrive  on  a  specific  address  in  Montreal  on  a  certain  date  to  deliver  a  package  to  someone,  the  exact  ,me  would  be  of  great  importance.

CHAPTER  6:  Case  Study:  How  I  Lost  13  Pounds  In  29  Days  Without  Starving  In  this  post  I  will  tell  you  about  some  smart  goals  examples,  which  are  real  life  case  studies  with  me  as  the  guinea  pig. How  it  all  started.... Lately  I  had  been  realizing  that  the  round  thing  above  my  waist,  called  a  belly,  didn`t  get  any  smaller.  I  had  been  in  a  rela, onship  for  about  two  years,  and  the  rela, onship  had  given  me  joy,  love  and  comfort,  and  last,  but  not  least,  a  23,5  pound  large  “front-‐pack”.To  be  quite  honest,  I  knew  about  the  ever-‐growing  problem.  The  case  was  that  I  just  wanted  to  ignore  it.  Unfortunately,  as  with  most  things  ignored...they  don`t  go  away. The  belly  was  like  a  li:le  kid  begging  for  daddy’s  a:en,on:  "Hey,  daddy,  I  am  here.  I  am  HERE!!"  And  when  I  didn`t  give  it  any  a:en,on,  it  did  the  only  reasonable  thing;  it  grew  larger,  so  it  couldn`t  be  ignored. Why  I  Decided  To  Do  Something  About  The  ProblemThat  summer  I  was  invited  to  my  dad`s  wedding,  and  while  standing  in  my  bedroom  trying  on  my  suit  pants,  I  realized  I  had  two  choices:1.  To  buy  a  new  suit  pants  in  a  LARGER  size 2.  To  accept  that  fact  that  I  was  overweight  and  decide  to  do  something  about  it!So  for  the  first  ,me  in  two  years,  I  finally  went  for  the  la:er  choice. How  should  I  start? I  started  to  write  down  my  ul,mate  goal,  deadline  and  the  ac,vi,es  (methods)  I  wanted  to  use  to  reach  my  goal.

Goal:  to  lose  10  poundsDate:  15th  of  June  (1  month  and  15  days)

Ac=vi=es  /  methods:-‐  change  what  I  eat-‐  change  how  much  I  eat  (especially  dinner,  I  had  a  bad  habit  of  ea,ng  more  even  though,  I  was  full)-‐  start  to  exerciseI  made  it  clear  that  I  didn`t  want  to  lose  weight  doing  certain  kind  of  strict  diets  and  I  didn`t  want  to  go  hungry,  since  it  makes  me  very  cranky.  The  most  important  thing,  was  that  I  wanted  to  do  it  in  a  natural  way,  so  I  would  be  able  to  keep  on  doing  the  ac,vi,es  for  a  long  ,me.Many  people  who  want  to  lose  weight  start  out  with  very  strict  diets.  Some  of  the  diets  will  work  if  you  follow  them  systema, cally.  However,  when  you  later  decide  to  go  back  to  your  normal  way  of  ea,ng,  the  fat  will  come  flying  back,  like  mosquitoes  to  a  torch. I  decided  to  use  SMART  goals  se<ng  for  reach  of  the  key  ac,vi,es  men, oned  above.  Then  I  broke  the  big  goal  down  into  three  smaller  goals  (SMART).

The  End  Result Due  to  the  revealing  ,tle  of  this  post,  you  don`t  need  to  be  Sherlock  Holmes  in  order  to  find  out  what  the  end  result  was. Yes,  I  lost  13  pounds  in  29  days.  What  I  really  liked  about  my  approach  was  that  it  was  an  easy  and  natural  way  of  losing  weight.  I  wasn`t  starving  myself  to  death,  nor  was  I  following  some  psycho  Nazi-‐diet,  which  meant  that  I  had  to  be  a  robot  in  order  to  complete  it.Then  over  to  the  one  million  dollar  ques,on… How  Did  I  Make  Myself  Exercise  When  I  didn`t  feel  like  it? When  I  set  this  goal,  I  didn`t  wish,  hope  or  just  plan  to  reach  this  goal  (to  see  if  I  perhaps  would  achieve  it).  I  actually  DECIDED.  That  word  means  to  actually  cut  off  all  other  alterna, ves.  To  fail  was  not  an  op,on  (yes,  that  sounds  like  a  movie  cliché,  but  it`s  s,ll  true.)  My  burning  desire  towards  reaching  the  goal  was  HUGE.  In  addi,on,  I  had  two  other  mo,va,onal  factors:-‐  The  avoidance  of  pain  by  not  reaching  my  goal  was  unacceptable  for  me-‐  The  pursuit  of  pleasure  by  achieving  the  goal  was  VERY  inspiringIn  order  to  reach  your  goal,  you  should  have  one  of  those  factors.  The  stronger  your  feelings  are  about  reaching  your  goal,  or  fail,  the  stronger  your  persistence  will  be,  which  will  increase  your  chance  of  succeeding.   If  your  big  goal  triggers  very  strong  emo, ons  towards  both  reaching  and  failing  your  goal,  you  will  have  doubled  your  chance  to  succeed.  To  wrap  it  up;  I  basically  told  myself  the  following:  “I  am  a  machine.  I  am  programming  myself  to  reach  my  goal.  I  will  perform  the  necessary  tasks  no  ma:er  what,  whether  I  feel  like  it  or  not.”  Do  you  want  to  make  changes  in  your  life?

CHAPTER 7: DUMB Goals

Page 32: The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs ...€¦ · The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs How To Kill Procrastination In 7 Days Before It Kills

The Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for Smart Entrepreneurs

CHAPTER  7:  DUMB  Goals In  the  previous  chapters  you  have  read  about  SMART  goal  seUng.  It  seems  that  in  some  cases  SMART  goals  are  dumb  and  DUMB  goals  are  smart.

Quick  recap,  SMART  goals  stands  for:SpecificMeasureableA:ainableRelevantTime  specific

There  are  several  posi,ve  benefits  regarding  SMART  goals.  However,  there  can  also  be  severe  crippling  consequences  if  you  ONLY  use  the  SMART  goals  approach.  SMART  Goals  are  a  two  edged  sword,  and  the  exact  benefits  from  using  the  approach,  are  the  same  that  can  destroy  your  future.

What`s  posi,ve  about  the  SMART  goals  approach,  is  that  I  helps  you  with  realis,c  goal  seUng.Can  you  guess  what  the  nega=ve  side  with  SMART  goal  se<ng  is? If  you  answered  that  your  goals  are  realis,c,  and  it  will  not  push  you  out  of  your  comfort  zone  and  reach  you  truly  amazing  poten,al,  you  are  correct. You  have  probably  heard  the  expression:  “There  is  only  one  way  to  eat  an  elephant.  One  piece  at  a  9me.”  Ea,ng  one  piece  at  a  ,me  is  good  and  all  that,  but  what  if  you  could  push  your  limits  and  first  be  able  to  eat  one  and  a  half  piece  at  a  ,me,  and  later  you  would  manage  to  eat  2  pieces  at  a  ,me.  You  would  never  become  the  greatest  elephant  eater  in  the  world  if  you  were  only  concentra,ng  on  maximum  ea,ng  on  piece  at  a  ,me.

You  probably  do  understand  that  we  are  not  actually  talking  about  ea,ng  here.  We  are  talking  about  your  goal  achieving  ac,vi,es,  that  will  bring  you  closer  to  your  maximum  poten,al.

You  are  probably  thinking:  “OK,  Tor,  I  got  it.  If  I  am  not  to  use  the  SMART  goals  approach  to  become  the  best  that  I  can  be,  what  should  I  use?”

The  answer  is,  believe  it  or  not,  DUMB  goals  approach.  Yes,  you  read  correct.

DUMB  goals  means:DreamingUplikingMega  cojones Barely  a:ainableI  will  elaborate.

Dreaming If  you  had  a  magic  wand  and  you  could  wave  it  and  wish  to  achieve  whatever  you  put  your  mind  to,  what  would  you  wish?  The  answer  to  that  ques,on  is  a  dreaming  goal.  Most  people  are  so  afraid  of  failing,  that  they  will  not  set  a  goal  that  is  hovering  to  high,  because  they  might  not  reach  it.  It`s  like  a  plant,  if  the  plant  doesn`t  stretch  towards  the  sun,  it  will  not  grow.UplieingThe  goal  should  give  you  a  posi,ve  feeling.  When  you  think  about  already  having  achieved  it,  it  should  give  you  a  good  ,ngling  feeling  in  your  stomach.  You  will  be  glad  when  you  reach  your  goal,  and  it  will  benefit  yourself  or  /  and  others  on  a  big  scale.

Mega  cojonesCojones  is  the  Spanish  word  for  balls.  Some,me  it  is  important  to  have  the  guts  and  courage  to  do  whatever  it  takes  to  reach  your  goal,  no  ma:er  what  the  risk  of  failing  is,  as  long  as  it  is  worth  it. No  great  inven,on  or  legendary  deed  has  ever  been  performed  by  not  having  the  guts.Brian  Tracy  says  that  the  only  difference  between  the  hero  and  the  coward  is  that  the  hero  s,cks  in  there  five  minutes  longer.  Barely  aXainable The  goal  should  be  a:ainable  in  a  long  shot.  Why?  Because  it’s  a  dreaming,  upliking  goal  which

requires  mega  balls  to  achieve.  The  best  thing  is  that  it  forces  you  to  stretch  higher  than  your  normally  would  and  thereby  grow  your  poten,al.

Rome  wasn`t  built  by  using  the  smart  goals  approach.  When  Colonel  Harland  Sanders  at  the  age  of  65  years  went  to  sell  his  chicken  recipe  to  restaurant  owners,  he  didn`t  do  it  by  using  the  smart  goals  approach.  He  knocked  on  1009  doors  un,l  he  finally  got  his  first  YES.  The  Chain  is  today  called  Kentucky  Fried  Chicken.

In  other  words:  no  legendary  outcome  has  ever  been  produced  by  small  and  realis,c  goal  seUng.!

CHAPTER  9:  How  To  Become  A  World  Champion  (A  Winning  Recipe)Have  you  ever  wondered  about  if  there  is  a  recipe  for  how  to  become  a  world  champion?  The  good  news  is  that  it  exists.  The  bad  news  is  that  it`s  very  hard.

Problem  solving  does  oken  require  you  to  think  outside  the  box.  If  you  have  a  challenging  situa,on  that  other  people  also  have,  and  they  haven`t  managed  to  solve  it,  you  will  need  to  do  something  different  that  they  have,  in  order  to  achieve  a  different  outcome.Insanity:  doing  the  same  thing  over  and  over  again  and  expec,ng  different  results.  (Albert  Einstein)The  best  way  to  oken  solve  a  challenging  situa,on  is  to  apply  logic  and  best  prac, ces.  If  that  s,ll  doesn`t  give  the  expected  outcome,  you  should  become  more  crea,ve  and  think  outside  the  box.  That  is  exactly  what  we  are  going  to  do  now. If  you  want  to  reach  your  true  poten,al,  you  should  do  a  combina,on  between  DUMB  goal  seUng  and  SMART  goal  seUng.  This  would  give  you  the  best  from  two  worlds.  You  would  be  using  two  different  processes,  have  several  goals  leading  to  the  ul,mate  goal.  What  do  I  mean?I  will  explain.  Let`s  say  that  you  need  to  pick  a  big  hairy  goal:  you  want  to  become  the  world  champion  in  kickboxing.  We  can  all  agree  that  it`s  a  DUMB  goal?  Good. DUMB  goal:  to  become  the  world  champion  in  kickboxing.  So,  now  we  have  established  a  big  goal.  What`s  next? Further  we  could  break  the  goal  down  into  smaller  goals.  Which  approach  should  we  use  now?  If  you  said  SMART  goals  approach,  you  are  correct.  In  that  case,  let`s  do  a  high  five.  *Slap*  (If  you  didn`t  guess  correctly,  you  s,ll  got  the  high  five). Several  years  ago,  I  was  training  kickboxing  in  the  best  kickboxing  club  in  Norway,  Fighter  Kickboxing  Club.  There  I  was  tutored  by,  Daimi  Akin,  the  coach  of  the  Norwegian  Kickboxing  team.  One  of  the  people  in  our  training  class,  was  Me:e  Solli.  At  that  ,me  she  was  the  reigning  World  Kickboxing  Champion  (full  contact).  She  has  won  the  Professional  World  Champion  ,tle  six  ,mes.

CHAPTER 10: Conclusion - 7 Steps On How To Reach

Your Goals

Page 43: The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs ...€¦ · The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs How To Kill Procrastination In 7 Days Before It Kills

The Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for Smart Entrepreneurs

CHAPTER  10:  Conclusion  -‐  7  Steps  On  How  To  Reach  Your  GoalsMost  people  are  like  kids.  They  don`t  fully  comprehend  what  delayed  gra, fica,on  means.

Let`s  use  saving  money  as  an  example.  It  is  challenging  for  them  to  understand  that  if  you  don`t  save  money  from  each  paycheck,  you  will  not  have  money  saved  up  for  a  rainy  day.   Perhaps  many  people  know  that,  but  they  don`t  care  because  they  think  it`s  boring  to  save  money,  or  they  are  not  able  to  have  the  self-‐discipline  to  do  what  it  takes.  Successful  people  make  decisions  today  that  will  influence  their  future  in  the  long  term.  They  will  sow  the  seeds  today,  but  they  won`t  be  able  to  harvest  the  crop  un,l  several  years.

Brian  Tracy  says  that  success  is  not  like  a  restaurant  where  you  pay  aker  you  have  enjoyed  your  meal.  Success  is  like  a  cafeteria;  you  can  choose  whatever  you  want,  but  you  must  pay  for  it  before  you  eat  it. The  recipe  behind  a  se<ng  and  reaching  your  goal  can  be  put  into  7  steps

1.  What  do  you  want  to  achieve?Start  with  the  end  in  mind.  Exactly  what  do  you  want  to  achieve?  It  has  to  be  measureable.  The  more  specific,  the  be:er  it  is,  and  you  should  also  put  an  end  date  to  the  goal.  Write  the  goal  down.  It  is  important  to  set  the  goal  a  bit  higher  than  what  is  realis,c,  so  you  will  need  to  go  out  of  the  comfort  zone.  This  will  increase  the  end  result.  For  instance,  if  your  ini,al  realis,c  goal  was  to  lose  X  amount  of  pounds  in  30  days,  you  should  push  the  end  goal  to  be  X  +  Y.  Perhaps  you  will  not  reach  +Y,  but  you  will  at  least  have  a  certain  percentage  of  Y,  let`s  say  ½  Y.  This  means  that  you  had  to  go  out  of  your  comfort  zone  and  you  lost  more  weight  than  you  had  originally  aimed  for.          For  the  sake  of  elabora,on,  let`s  say  that  X  is  6  pounds  and  Y  is  5  pounds.  Instead  of  losing  6  pounds,  you  have  now  lost  2.5  pounds  more  than  your  ini,al  goal.

Only  by  expanding  comfortable  boundaries,  will  true  greatness  be  achieved.

2.  The  knowledge  to  choose  the  right  ac=on  stepsAnalyze  what  you  have  to  do  /  sacrifice  in  order  to  achieve  your  goal.  If  you  don’t  have  the  sufficient  knowledge,  don`t  worry,  it  can  be  learned.  If  the  la:er  is  the  case,  you  can  get  the  knowledge  through  reading  books  (that  covers  the  topic),  and  find  people  who  has  already  achieved  what  you  want,  and  find  out  what  they  have  done.  There  is  no  point  in  reinven,ng  the  wheel.  All  successful  people  have  learned  from  others.

3.  The  right  skill  set  to  accomplish  the  task  at  handIf  you  don`t  have  the  correct  skill  set  to  perform  he  necessary  tasks,  see  bullet  point  2.  The  correct  skill  set  can  be  acquired  through  diligently  applica,on  of  knowledge.

The  formula  is:  Knowledge    apply  knowledge    experience    improved  skill  set.Repeat  the  steps  un,l  you  have  reached  required  skill  set  to  perform  the  task  at  hand.

4.  Make  a  planSee  the  bullet  point  1  and  2,  and  use  reverse  engineering  on  the  goal  you  want  to  achieve.  Ask  yourself:  “Exactly  what  type  of  ac,ons  do  I  have  to  perform  in  order  to  achieve  my  goal?”Write  down  the  specific  tasks  in  a  plan  (what  to  do,  how  it  is  measured,  when  you  should  start  the  task  and  when  you  the  task  should  be  completed). As  Brian  Tracy  puts  it  so  well:  “the  person  who  doesn`t  plan,  plans  to  fail”.

5.  Have  a  burning  desire   Mo,va,on  comes  from  within  you.  Other  people  can`t  mo,vate  you,  they  can  only  inspire  you.  The  stronger  emo, ons  you  have  about  achieving  your  goal,  the  higher  is  the  chance  that  you  actually  will  perform  the  necessary  ac,ons  what  is  required.

6.  DecideThe  word  decide  comes  from  the  La,n  word  dēcīdō which  means  cut  off.  It  is  a  strong  word;  it  means  to  cut  off  all  other  op,ons.  So  based  on  the  steps  above,  you  will  now  have  to  make  the  choice:  are  you  really  willing  to  sacrifice  and  do  the  required  tasks  no  ma:er  what  happens?

7.  Self-‐disciplineSelf-‐discipline  is  to  do  what  is  needed  to  be  done  whether  you  feel  like  it  or  not.

Kop  Kopmeyer  wrote  1000  success  principles  in  4  bestselling  book,  but  he  also  wrote  that  if  you  don`t  have  self-‐discipline,  none  of  the  other  success  principles  will  work. If  you  are  willing  to  perform  the  required  tasks  no  ma:er  what  happens  in  your  life,  there  is  a  great  chance  that  you  will  succeed  in  reaching  your  goal.

CHAPTER 11: Your Turn - Want To Change Your Life

Now? Do this

Page 47: The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs ...€¦ · The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs How To Kill Procrastination In 7 Days Before It Kills

The Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for Smart Entrepreneurs

CHAPTER  11:  Your  Turn  -‐  Want  To  Change  Your  Life  Now?  Do  thisThe  mastery  of  the  skill:  how  to  set  personal  goals  (and  reach  them),  makes  the  difference  between  the  people  who  have  success  and  the  people  who  don`t.Have  you  ever  tried  to  set  personal  goals?  If  the  answer  is  yes,  please  keep  on  reading.  If  the  answer  is  no,  you  should  definitely  STOP  whatever  you  are  doing  and  read  this  post  NOW. Let`s  cut  to  the  chase. The  3  Tips  On  How  To  Set  Personal  Goals  (And  Reach  Them) Ac=vity  1  –  set  a  clear  “big  hairy  goal”  The  first  you  should  do  is  to  set  a  clear  goal  that  would  change  your  life.  What  goal  would  that  be?  Use  the  DUMB  Goal  seUng  template  to  define  it.  Do  it  now. Please  do  not  con, nue  reading  before  you  have  wri:en  down  your  goal. Ac=vity  2  –  break  the  big  hairy  goal  down  into  smaller  realis=c  goalsDo  a  brainstorming.  What  ac,vi,es  do  you  need  to  do  in  order  to  achieve  your  big  hairy  goal?  If  you  are  not  sure  what  need  to  be  done:  find  out. You  can  "Google"  it,  ask  a  mentor  or  someone  you  know  who  has  the  knowledge.  If  neither  of  the  la:er  sugges, ons  made  any  result,  find  an  expert  person  in  that  area  (who  you  don’t  know)  and  contact  the  person.  Be  polite  and  ask  for  advice.  Successful  people  like  to  share  their  knowledge  with  other  people.  They  have  also  been  in  your  shoes,  and  they  have  also  learned  from  others. When  you  have  the  list  of  required  ac,vi,es  you  need  to  perform  in  order  to  reach  your  big  hairy  goal,  break  them  down  into  smaller  goals  by  using  SMART  goals  approach.  This  would  probably  result  in  1  DUMB  goal,  which  has  been  divided  into  several  SMART  goals.

Page 48: The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs ...€¦ · The Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting For Smart Entrepreneurs How To Kill Procrastination In 7 Days Before It Kills

The Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for Smart Entrepreneurs

Ac=vity  3  –  Analyze  the  sacrifice  and  decide Now  you  should  have  the  overview  of  what  it  takes  to  reach  your  big  hairy  goal. You  will  now  have  to  answer  3  important  key  ques, ons  that  will  guide  you  toward  your  success.  I  learned  them  from  Brian  Tracy,  and  they  serve  as  a  compass  toward  my  big  hairy  goals. Ques=on  1:  Do  you  know  what  you  want? The  answer  should  be  yes.  It  should  be  your  big  hairy  goal,  which  we  set  it  ac,vity  1.Ques=on  2:  Do  you  know  what  you  need  to  sacrifice  in  order  to  achieve  it? The  answer  should  also  be  yes.    It  should  be  all  your  smaller  goals  which  we  mapped  out  in  ac,vity  2.     Ques=on  3:  Are  you  willing  to  do  the  necessary  sacrifice  in  order  to  get  what  you  want? So,  what  you  see  is  what  you  have  to  sacrifice  in  order  to  achieve  what  you  want.  Why  do  I  use  the  word  sacrifice?  Because  reaching  your  goals  and  being  a  successful  person  requires  sacrifice.  For  every  ,me  you  say  yes  to  perform  an  ac,vity  (for  yourself  or  others),  you  automa, cally  eliminates  other  ac,vi,es  that  you  rather  could  be  doing. The  more  successful  you  become,  the  more  opportuni,es  you  will  get,  and  it  is  even  more  important  to  know  which  road  you  should  take. When  I  got  more  experienced  in  my  previous  corporate  career,  I  got  more  job  and  investment  opportuni,es.  Now  people  are  contac,ng  me  on  a  regular  basis  asking  me  to  work  for  them  or  to  invest  in  their  company. The  difference  between  successful  people  and  very  successful  people,  is  that  very  successful  people  say  ‘no’  to  almost  everything."  -‐  Warren  BuffetIf  you  don`t  have  enough  =me  in  order  to  complete  the  ac=vi=es,  you  have  to  make  =me.  If  you  are  not  willing  to  do  that,  you  will  not  reach  your  goal.

You  should  have  a  burning  desire  and  decide  to  complete  the  necessary  tasks  no  ma:er  what.

Brian  Tracy  says  that  the  difference  between  a  successful  person  and  an  unsuccessful  person,  is  that  the  successful  person  is  willing  to  do  what  the  unsuccessful  person  isn`t.  So  what  is  it?  The  successful  person  is  doing  the  same  tasks  that  the  unsuccessful  person  isn`t  willing  to  do,  but  he  does  it  anyway.Back  to  YOU. Let  me  repeat  the  ques,on  for  you,  since  it  is  extremely  important. Are  you  willing  to  do  the  necessary  sacrifice  in  order  to  get  what  you  want? If  the  answer  is  yes,  and  you  actually  do  whatever  it  takes,  your  ac,ons  will  reap  results  in  the  future  that  will  be  spoken  of  as  legendary.  The  mayor  of  your  hometown  will  erect  a  15  feet  statue  of  you  outside  the  city  hall.  People  will  not  only  copy  your  haircut  and  dress  code,  they  will  even  be  naming  their  first  born  child  aker  you. Yes,  I  know  that  the  last  comment  was  of  the  humorous  kind,  however,  it  s,ll  doesn`t  change  the  fact  that  if  you  can  have  the  self-‐discipline  to  persevere  and  reach  your  big  goal,  you  will  be  admired.  (If  you  just  want  to  a:ract  the  other  sex,  you  should  probably  do  something  a  bit  less  hard;  learn  to  play  guitar  or  learn  to  cook  really  good  food  (which  would  cast  a  magic  spell  on  the  people  ea,ng  your  dish). To  wrap  it  up:  analyze  what  you  want  to  plant(goal)  -‐  sow  the  seed(perform  ac=ons)  -‐  reap  the  harvest(results). Join  me  in  achieving  more  by  working  less!

BONUS  CHAPTER:  7  Ways  To  Increase  Produc=vity  (And  Double  Your  Output)   Li:le  did  I  know  that  today  would  be  the  day  I  would  discover  the  7  ways  to  increase  produc, vity.  I  am  now  siUng  in  the  hospital,  since  my  girlfriend  is  undergoing  surgery.  I  brought  my  laptop  so  I  could  be  produc,ve  while  wai,ng. What  I  realized  is  that  I  have  been  able  to  finish  3  blog  posts  and  2  templates(equals  a  blog  post)  in  3  hours.  That  equals  4  blog  posts  in  3  hours.  Un,l  now,  I  have  spent  about  1,5  hour  on  wri,ng  a  blog  post  (no  English  is  not  my  primary  language).  So,  this  means  that  I  normally  would  have  used  about  6  hours  on  4  blog  posts. So  how  did  I  manage  to  do  it? The  answer  is….  *  drum  roll  *….. The  7  ways  to  increase  produc=vity: 1.  Work  during  your  prime  =me I  know  that  I  am  usual  most  produc,ve  in  the  morning.  This  ,me  I  started  07.30  am.  Note  to  self:  start  to  get  out  of  bed  earlier  in  the  morning. 2.  Required  toolsI  had  my  laptop.  I  would  neither  be  mo,vated  nor  being  able  to  do  it  in  the  same  efficiency  if  I  had  pen  and  paper. 3.  Good  and  calm  work  environmentThe  wai,ng  room  at  the  hospital  had  a  good  temperature,  not  too  warm  and  not  too  cold  (a  li:le  bit  more  cold  than  warm,  though).  A  warm  work  environment  usually  makes  the  mind  lazy,  and  it`s  hard  to  focus.

4.  Clear  goalI  knew  exactly  what  I  needed  to  do:  open  a  word  document  and  start  to  write.  If  you  don`t  know  what  task  to  do,  you  are  not  being  produc,ve,  you  are  planning.  I  don`t  say  that  planning  is  a  bad  thing,  but  it  should  be  done  beforehand. 5.  FocusNo  mul, tasking  and  not  doing  other  things  than  the  task  at  hand.  No  wandering  thoughts.  Only  focus.  On  one  task:  to  write. 6.  No  internet  connec=onIf  you  are  going  to  be  very  produc,ve,  you  should  turn  off  your  internet  connec,on  during  your  highly  produc,ve  ,me.  Internet  is  one  of  the  biggest  distrac, ons  in  our  society  today.  If  you  are  like  me,  it  is  easy  to  check  your  mail,  “googling”,  check  your  LinkedIn-‐,  Facebook-‐  and  Twi:er  account,  etc.  And  suddenly,  2  hours  has  passed  by  and  you  s,ll  haven`t  been  able  to  complete  the  work  you  set  out  to  do. 7.  Muted  cellphone The  phone  will  not  be  ringing  and  distract  you.  Perhaps  it  is  sales  person  calling  you,  or  your  mother  who  is  going  to  update  you  on  aunt  Doris`s  dermatology  problem.  Some  calls  doesn`t  need  to  be  taken,  and  others  can  wait.  You  can  always  call  them  up  aker  your  produc,ve  ,me.If  you  are  reading  my  post,  you  are  probably  not  the  president  of  the  United  States.  And  yes,  I  know  it  is  hard  to  realize,  but  the  truth  is  that  the  world  will  probably  s,ll  exist  if  you  don`t  answer  you  phone  during  your  produc,ve  ,me.
