A Perspective Purdue University owes a substantial debt to its medieval predecessors for its commencement ceremony and academic attire. The academic heri-tage that evolved during the Middle Ages provided us with a teaching institution, the university; a method of measuring academic progress, degrees; and a structure for an appropriate ceremony recognizing the student’s achievement, commencement. In June 1875, Purdue University held its first commencement outdoors on the Oval, awarding the Bachelor of Science degree to a class of one. In 1903, commencement was moved indoors to the newly-completed Eliza Fowler Hall. The steady growth of the size of the graduating class necessitated moving the exercises to larger and larger facilities: the Memorial Gymnasium, the Armory, the Field House, and in 1940, to the Edward C. Elliott Hall of Music. The 244th commencement at the West Lafayette campus is being held today for graduates who qualified for their degrees at the end of the current semester. The colorful ceremony, enacted each year on campuses throughout the world, is the formal climax and recognition of the graduates’ years of study and preparation.

THE USE OFACADEMIC EMBLEMS

Seals are common to all corporate bodies and have been used since ancient times to authenticate documents. They constituted the official signatures of emperors, bishops, and corporations. University seals evolved from those of church corporations. In Europe, the early faculties and student nations possessed seals; in the United States, all colleges and universities have had seals since Colonial days. The current Purdue Seal was officially adopted in 1969 and retains elements of earlier versions, which evolved beginning in 1890. The seal features a stylized depiction of the griffin, the mythological beast with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. In medieval heraldry, the griffin symbolized strength. The three-part shield represents Purdue’s traditional aims: learning, discovery, and engagement. The seal combines these traditional elements with modern simplicity of design to form one of the most distinctive of university symbols.

The mace has an ancient history as a symbol of authority. Originally giant clubs made of iron and capable of breaking armor, maces were used chiefly by knights. They were also often borne by a royal bodyguard to protect the king in processions. In the course of time, by the 14th century, they assumed more ceremonial functions and lost their warlike appearance, as they began to be decorated with jewels and precious metals. In 1649, the English House of Commons obtained a mace. In 1756, a silver mace was made for the colony of South Carolina; it is still in use in the state capital at Columbia. In the United States House of Representatives, the mace is placed to the right of the speaker. As a symbol of order and authority, a mace is carried before the president and other dignitaries in the platform party in commencement processions. As a reflection of the modern vision of a truly American university, the design of the Purdue Mace embraces sweeping thrusts and counterthrusts to create a vital energy within an otherwise clean, linear aesthetic. The University seal is located in the center of the mace-head; bounding it are two sweeping silver wings.

The medallion identifies members of the Purdue University Teaching Academy, a dedicated and dynamic network of scholar-teachers committed to the continual improvement of teaching and learning at Purdue University. Under the auspices of the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Teaching Academy works with the academic schools, the Center for Instructional Excellence, and others to enrich the educational experiences of the entire Purdue University community. The mission of the Teaching Academy is to provide leadership and serve as a catalyst to enhance and strengthen the quality of undergraduate, graduate, and outreach teaching and learning.

Closely allied with maces and seals as symbols of authority are the collars of office worn by many officials, including chancellors and presidents of universities. Collars usually include a medallion inscribed with the seal of the institution and are worn over the academic gown on public occasions, particularly at commencements. Located in the center of Purdue’s Presidential Medallion is the three-part “heraldic shield” and griffin, the symbol which has existed throughout Purdue’s long history of University seals. The medallion, as well as the mace, was handcrafted from sterling silver, ebony, and gold, using the centuries-old techniques of swedging, forging, hollow-forming, and silver soldering.

The banners, sometimes known as standards or gonfalons (a flag that hangs from a crosspiece or frame), originated in the medieval republics of Italy as an ensign of state or office. They have been adopted in many universities around the world as school or institutional insignias. The fourteen banners displayed represent the University, the Graduate School, and the twelve undergraduate colleges or schools at the West Lafayette campus. The colors of the University, old gold and black, are joined together in a pattern common to all the banners. The bands are the same colors as the tassels worn on the mortarboard of the college’s or school’s graduates.

Each college or school is represented on its banner by a symbol and two colored bands indicating its major academic discipline.

THE PURDUEUNIVERSITY SEAL

The Purdue seal is used as the University’s formal signature — a confirmation of authenticity on all official documents.

The first Purdue seal was designed in 1890. The current seal, designed in 1968 by Al Gowan to retain elements of all eight previous versions, is used on official University documents such as diplomas, letters of acceptance and communication from the Board of Trustees and the president.

When it was delivered in September 1891 to a site near the present airport, a university holiday was declared so that the student body could lift the locomotive from the rails, and assisted by three teams of horses, pull it across the wheat fields to the newly built Engineering Laboratory near the present site of Grissom Hall.

Eliza Fowler Hall first opened its doors in 1903 for the spring commencement exercises. Made possible through a generous gift of Mrs. Fowler of Lafayette, the building also housed the executive offices of the University for many years. It was torn down in the early 1950s to make way for Stewart Center and its new Eliza Fowler Hall.

Purdue’s commencement exercises have been held in many different locations through the years, ranging from a large circus tent on the Oval in the 1880’s to their present site in the Edward C. Elliott Hall of Music. Commencement in the early 1930’s was held in the memorial Gymnasium, now Haas Hall. Limited space for guest seating soon necessitated a move to the larger facilities in the Armory.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Jocelyn Wong is a marketing executive, who’s 24 year career has included leadership roles in the consumer packaged goods space, a variety of retail formats, and in the fast growing on-demand delivery platform sector. She has received numerous industry awards and prides herself on being a passionate, data obsessed Brand Builder.

Her most recent role was the Chief Customer Officer of Gopuff, a late stage-startup that delivers consumer goods in less than 30 minutes in over 650 US cities. In just under a year, the company’s valuation quadrupled to $9B. Her role consisted of building the marketing organization, launching a holistic Brand Strategy and Campaign, and over-seeing merchandising.

Prior to Gopuff, Jocelyn was the Chief Marketing Officer at Lowe’s, a $70B home improvement retailer. For nearly 4 years, she had responsibility over digital marketing, creative strategy and production as well as product marketing.

Her earlier experiences included a variety of roles at Safeway, Family Dollar as well as Procter and Gamble, where she began her career as a Process Engineer before transitioning into Brand Management.

Jocelyn has a bachelor degree in Food Process Engineering from Purdue University. One of the most impactful moments in her life was in her sophomore year when she won a school competition for “most creative use of soybeans”. This single event is what led her down a path to pursue a career she not only loved but excelled at; marrying the technical aspect of engineering with the creativity of marketing to solve real world problems.

Currently, Jocelyn also serves on the Board of Directors for 2 privately held companies. She and her husband Patrick, along with their 3 kids, Jada, Liam and Kira, currently reside in Charlotte, NC. She is a constant “dreamer” and is always exploring new areas of interest to pursue and challenge her. She loves food (cooking and eating) as well as planning adventures around the world for her family to enjoy.

Richard Kuhn received his B.S. in Chemistry from SUNY at Stony Brook as well as his Ph.D. studying poliovirus. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1986, he joined the laboratory of Dr. James Strauss at Caltech where he studied alphaviruses. He was recruited to Purdue University in the Markey Center for Structural Biology in 1991. His research has focused on the replication and assembly of the alphaviruses, picornaviruses, and the flaviviruses. Together with his structural biology colleagues including Michael Rossmann (until his passing in 2019), he has been involved in many fundamental studies examining the structure and assembly of viruses, including dengue and Zika viruses. He served as Department Head of Biological Sciences from 2005-2016 and Director of the Bindley Biosciences Center, from 2007-2015. His current positions are the Trent and Judith Anderson Distinguished Professor of Science and the Krenicki Family Director, Purdue Institute of Inflammation, Immunology and Infectious Disease.

Tanmay Das of Dwarka, New Delhi, India, is receiving a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Tanmay has focused on gaining global on-the-job experience to complement his studies, and has held internship positions at Rheem Air Conditioning in Fort Smith, Arkansas; General Electric Aviation in Bangalore, India; Oerlikon Graziano Drive Systems in Uttar Pradesh, India; and Bahrain Fiber Glass International in Mina Salman, Bahrain. He has also been an active presence on campus, serving as a peer mentor for the Bechtel Innovation Design Center and as both the transmission and suspension lead for the Purdue Baja Racing Team. Tanmay was the recipient of the John M. Starkey Prize in Mechanical Engineering, the Bottomley Research Scholarship and, twice, the Gordon Hall Mechanical Engineering Scholarship. Tanmay has accepted to join the University of Michigan as a masters student in Mechanical Engineering this fall, and continues to explore employment opportunities.

The main gates to the campus were given to the University by the Class of 1897 in keeping with a long-standing tradition. Facing State Street and looking south to the ag campus beyond, they were wide enough to permit the bicycle and buggy traffic of their youth. But with the advent of fewer horses and more horsepower not too many years later, they were moved farther apart. The gateways were removed from their permanent location in 1956 before construction was begun on Stewart Center and now stand on the Memorial Mall near John Purdue’s grave. The faculty and candidate procession passes across the Purdue Oval at the commencement in 1903, the first year commencement exercises were held in Eliza Fowler Hall. Participants dressed in regular clothes, since the use of caps and gowns for graduation was not to be adopted by the senior class until 1922.

PURDUE HONORS COLLEGEThe Purdue Honors College provides an interdisciplinary environment for undergraduate students from across all areas of study. Graduates of the Honors College are recognized with a medallion worn at graduation ceremonies, an honors designation on their diploma, and notation on their academic record. Students complete an honors enriched curriculum and conduct a scholarly research project. Honors College graduates are noted in the commencement program by the torch beside their name. The torch is the official symbol of the Honors College, reflecting the intent to ignite students’ imaginations.

The Purdue Honors College was established in 2013 with pathways to honors across majors. The Honors College was built on a rich legacy of honors programs at the college and departmental levels. Recognition of students completing honors at the departmental level are recognized via a certificate and notation.

DISTINCTION AND HIGHEST DISTINCTIONThe outstanding scholastic achievement of selected professional and undergraduate degree recipients is recognized by awarding the degree “with distinction” or “with highest distinction.” Eligible candidates with superior academic records who are expected to graduate in May are designated as potential candidates for this special recognition at the beginning of the spring semester and are so identified in the commencement program. The final determination of those who actually receive this recognition is made at the conclusion of the semester and is based upon the final graduation index.

A minimum of 65 credit hours included in the graduation index for the professional or baccalaureate degree and 35 credit hours included in the graduation index for the associate degree, with a minimum graduation index of 3.30 are required for a graduate to be eligible for consideration. The upper 10 percent of the May graduates in each of the various colleges or schools receive degrees “with distinction.” Of the grad-uates who thus qualify, the upper three-tenths of the professional, baccalaureate and associate graduates receive their degrees “with highest distinction,” regardless of the college or school from which they graduate. The minimum graduation indexes thus determined in May for each college or school are applied for graduation “with distinction” and “with highest distinction” for the subsequent summer session and fall semester. Recognition is evidenced by placing an appropriate seal on the diploma and entering an appropriate nota-tion on the academic record. Graduates who are potential candidates for degrees “with highest distinction” wear special gold and black honor cords during the commencement ceremony; those who are potential candidates for degrees “with distinction” wear gold honor cords.

Professional andUndergraduate Degrees

Built in 1872 as Boarding Hall, this was the first permanent building to be erected north of State Street. When Purdue opened in September of 1874, it housed the college dining room, living quarters for new faculty and their families, and the office for Purdue’s second president, Abraham C. Shortridge Also known for a time as Art Hall, when classes in that subject were taught in some of the rooms on the first floor, it was used for the major part of its existence as the women’s residence hall, Ladies Hall. It faced State Street just a few steps east of where Matthews Hall now stands. Ladies Hall was torn down in 1927—one of the first major University buildings to disappear from campus.

An 18-foot, 5,400-pound bronze statue that celebrates the lore and legend of the Purdue Boilermakers now stands next to Ross-Ade Stadium with an inscription that reads; “The year was 1891. A college known for its proud heritage of educating the sons and daughters of the working class began to dominate opponents in football. After a 44-0 thrashing of Wabash College, a headline writer provided inspiration for a most unique nickname. ‘Wabash Snowed Completely Under by the Burly Boiler Makers from Purdue’ chronicled a victory by the ‘Herculean wearers of the black and old gold.’ Never intended as a compliment, the insult appealed to the students of the day. The indomitable spirit of the boilermaker is embodied in the tireless laborer you see before you.”

*Designated as a Distinguished Military Graduate

The designation of “Distinguished Military Graduate” indicates selected individuals who have demonstrated a particularly high level of achievement while earning both an academic degree and a com-mission in the Armed Forces of the United States. Criteria used in making the selection include demonstrated performance and leadership in course work as well as in athletics and extracurricular functions. The candidate must also maintain at least a “B” average in all course work while ranking in the upper third of his or her contemporaries for the Army or Navy, or the upper tenth for the Air Force. Commissionees so designated receive an appropriately inscribed certificate from their respective service.

The faculty and candidate procession passes across the Purdue Oval at the commencement in 1903, the first year commencement exercises were held in Eliza Fowler Hall. Participants dressed in regular clothes, since the use of caps and gowns for graduation was not to be adopted by the senior class until 1922.

Purdue Football team unveil the Old Oaken Bucket at the Purdue Men's Basketball game, November 28, 2017. In 1925, Dr. Clarence Jones, Indiana alum, and Russel Gray, Purdue alum, were given the task of finding a suitable trophy to represent the rivalry between the two schools. They traveled across the state in search of "the most typical Hoosier form of trophy". Jones and Gray came across Bruner Farm where a bucket hung from a well. They brought the bucket back with them and restored it. George Ade, representing Purdue, and Harry Kurrie, representing Indiana, presented the Old Oaken Bucket trophy to President Bryan, of Indiana, and Dr. Elliott, of Purdue at Ross Ade Stadium, in the 1925 game. Ironically, the 1925 game ended in a 0-0 tie. The bronze block "IP" was linked to the trophy to signify the tie. As of 2013, Purdue leads the series 72-38-6.

The main gates to the campus were given to the University by the Class of 1897 in keeping with a long-standing tradition. Facing State Street and looking south to the ag campus beyond, they were wide enough to permit the bicycle and buggy traffic of their youth. But with the advent of fewer horses and more horsepower not too many years later, they were moved farther apart. The gateways were removed from their permanent location in 1956 before construction was begun on Stewart Center and now stand on the Memorial Mall near John Purdue’s grave. In this photo, Heavilon Hall and the original Eliza Fowler Hall can be seen in the background.
