FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners, As we return to the themes of the Apostolic Letter Dies Domini, today we come to the fifth chapter which presents Sunday as the day that reveals the meaning of time. Fr. Groeschel once wrote: “we’re all living on the edge, and we’re all approaching eternity at exactly the same rate of speed: 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” Each of us cannot fail to be aware, every day, of how quickly our lives pass. And if we look at the great periods of history, how can we not ask ourselves about our future, about what awaits us, about the goal for which we strive? We believers, answer these questions by pointing to Christ as the very meaning of history. In his divine and human mystery, He is at the origin of the world (cf. Jn 1:3) and is the goal of Creation (cf. Col 1:16). As the Redeemer, it is He in whom everything has been recapitulated (cf. Eph 1:10), to be saved and restored to God the Father. Since Sunday is the weekly Easter, recalling and making present the day upon which Christ rose from the dead, it is also the day which reveals the meaning of time. In fact, the Holy Father explains, everything that will happen until the end of the world will be no more than an extension and unfolding of what happened on the day, when the battered body of the Crucified Lord was raised by the power of the Spirit, and became in turn the wellspring of the Spirit for all humanity. In the light of this mystery, history assumes a positive meaning for us, despite the sometimes deadly trials and risks to which sin subjects us. Christ is stronger than sin and death! And Sunday, by making the memory of his Resurrection present at all times, is an opening of credit for the future, a comforting certainty, a prophetic reminder of the day when Christ will come in glory. To help us live Christ’s mystery in time, the liturgy is divided into the various phases of the liturgical year. In addition to the fundamental moments –Christmas, Easter, Pentecost– other feasts of great importance are also solemnized by the Church as days of precept, with the obligation to participate in the Eucharist in accordance with the model of Sunday, which is rightly considered the “primordial feast.” So, I invite you and your families to deepen your experience of the riches of Sunday and those of the whole liturgical year. How? By reading in prayerful attitude the Mass readings, especially the Sunday Gospel – either before or throughout the week after – and meditate on them, reflecting on the main point of the homily you heard. Why not take the Apostolic Letter Dies Domini with you and devote a few hours to quietly reading it? Or think of some charitable acts that you could perform with your family and/or some legitimate ways in which you could spend this day of rest. You will see, how in this way you will become ever more aware of your Catholic identity. A final thought: when St. John Paul II announced the publication of this Apostolic letter he said: “Do not be afraid, dear friends, to open your time to Christ! Time given to him is not wasted; on the contrary, it is time gained for our humanity; it is time which fills our days with light and hope.” To all students, parents, teachers and school staff who in these days are returning to school I wish you a blessed and productive school year. May Mary, who was a Mother and a Teacher, help parents and educators properly to fulfill their task which is so crucial to the future of their children. I entrust you all to her maternal care. Best wishes to all! May God bless you! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE

Dear All, As you all know, our Catechism program has been blessed with so many students, over 860 this year, and devoted Catechists, Assistants and Lobby monitors. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all of them, as I also encourage everyone to come back next year to teach and assist. Yet, I would like to tell you that we are still in need of MANY MORE CATECHISTS, ASSISTANTS AND LOBBY MONITORS for the Catechetical year 2014 - 2015.
