Physical features

Tundras are usually rocky plains, but in summer months Tundras are covered in marshes, lakes, bogs, and streams.

There is a thick subsurface layer of soil called the permafrost that covers most of the tundra and is frozen throughout the year.

Animals

There are many different types of Mammals and Birds found in the Tundra. Some birds found in the Tundra include the Gyrfalcon, the

Rock Ptarmigan, the Snowy Owl, the Ruddy Turnstone, the Snow Bunting, and the Tundra Swan.

Mammals commonly found in the Tundra include the Arctic Fox, Polar Bear, Caribou, Norway Lemming, and Musk Ox. Many animals that live in the Tundra are white or have some white on them as an adaptation to blend in with the snow.

Plants Due to the harsh conditions and low amounts of

precipitation in the Tundra, there are very few plants that can consistently grow there. During the summer months permafrost thaws and allows plants to grow. Usually the only plants found in the Tundra are small shrubs, Lichens, Cushion Plants, and Cotton Grass.
