A WORD FROM PASTOR REBECCA

When John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, was

asked about what the distinguishing characteristics or marks of a

Methodist were, he responded with the following…

The distinguishing marks of a Methodist are not his opinions of any

sort. His assenting to this or that scheme of religion, his embracing

any particular set of notions, his espousing the judgment of one man

or of another, are all quite wide of the point. Whosoever, therefore,

imagines that a Methodist is a man of such or such an opinion, is

grossly ignorant of the whole affair; he mistakes the truth totally.

We believe, indeed, that "all Scripture is given by the inspiration of

God.” We believe the written word of God to be the only and sufficient

rule both of Christian faith and practice. We believe Christ to be the

eternal, supreme God. But as to all opinions which do not strike at the

root of Christianity, we think and let think. So that whatsoever they

are, whether right or wrong, they are no distinguishing marks of a

Methodist.

“What then is the mark? Who is a Methodist, according to your own

account?" I answer: A Methodist is one who has "the love of God shed

abroad in his heart by the Holy Ghost given unto him;" one who

"loves the Lord his God with all his heart, and with all his soul, and

with all his mind, and with all his strength.” God is the joy of his

heart, and the desire of his soul; which is constantly crying out,

"Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I

desire beside thee! My God and my all! Thou art the strength of my

heart, and my portion forever!" (“The Character of a Methodist” by John Wesley, from the Thomas Jackson edition

of The Works of John Wesley, 1872)

As we move through seasons of change in our church and in our

world, may we hold on to these words of John Wesley and may we

“think and let think” as we worship side by side and serve our

neighbors near and far. May the love of God continue to shape the

way that we look at ourselves and one another – amen and amen!

With great hope,

Pastor Rebecca

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES

Sunday School

A word from the Children’s Department: Children’s Sunday School Classes begin on September 17th. We are very fortunate to have some wonderful teachers lined up for this year. Classes will be held for pre-school through 5th grade age. We invite your children to come learn about Jesus’ life. Children’s Choir will again be led by Heather McBeth. Their rehearsals are scheduled prior to Sunday School class, so the children can participate in both. Practices start at 10:05 in the education wing. The children's choir will perform the special music in worship on the first Sunday of the month (Communion Sunday). The Children’s committee is planning a special treat on October 8th during their Sunday school hour, a “Fall Festival” with fun activities for the children.

10TH ANNUAL GARAGE SALE

Our 10th annual garage sale is in the books and as always, thanks go out to many people….

To all of you who donated the items we sell To all of you who helped sort, clean, price and display items To all of you who worked on the sale itself To all of you who purchased items on the pre-sale night To all of you who helped clean up after the sale To all of you who baked cookies And, to all of you who did many more “behind the scenes” things to make our sale one of the best around!

Our total for this year’s sale was right at $8,000. This number is a little lower than the past couple of years as we just didn’t have as many things to sell. However, this is still a very significant amount of money that will help Elkhorn Hills reach its goal of “Spreading the Love of Jesus Christ” in our community. Some people have asked where the garage sale money goes. All of the profit from the Garage Sale goes to fund the Missions Committee and their various projects. Just to name a few, the funds raised help support COPE, Youth Emergency Services, NUMB, and Habitat for Humanity. We have provided mission trip scholar-ships and in the past have helped the church pay our Mission Shares.

So, to everyone who played a part in this year’s sale, a huge THANK YOU! What you do makes a difference in the lives of many.
