Summer in St. Croix(or Frank and Sharon’s Excellent Adventure)

Back in April when most folks that are headed north for the summer are packing and starting their trips, Frank and I accepted a job in St. Croix for the summer and headed south. The job was as a “Captain & Mate” position for the summer on a 65’ CT ketch, the Wildflower.

St. Croix is a lovely laid-back island, with friend-ly people, and gorgeous beaches. They drive on the left-hand side of the road and have the worst roads in any of the United States Territories. This island is one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. En-

glish (sort of ) is the language and American currency is used. It is sparsely populated with postcard-like vistas around every turn. It is unique in its climate diversity for such a small island. It has a rain forest at the west end and cactus growing at the east end. Although the boat needed lots of work, we did manage to sneak in one charter with the owner and his friends to the British Virgin Islands. We also had the opportunity to spend a few weeks in St. Martin, where the boat had to have some of the work done. It was a wonderful “working” sort of vacation and we got to visit some very beautiful places! By the time the summer was up, however, we were really glad to head home to pack up to return to Tropic Isles!

Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

Dave and Trish Spangler visited their family in San Pedro, CA before Dave’s fishing trip.   This picture includes their

son, Kevin, their daughter-in-law, Chea, Trish’s sister and her husband, with their older son and daughter.

Don and Mary Beth Stotts visited Niagara Falls, NY

in September.

This is Mary Beth Stotts after riding in a helicopter over Niagara Falls. Next to her is Tom Culbreth Jr. whose parents live at 193 Bimini. He owns the helicopter company. What a blast!

Here’s a picture of our family b e f o r e t h e taping of the g a m e s h o w Fa m i l y Fe u d . It was aired on Sept. 22 and 23. They are called

the Huber family (even though 3 of them are Williams). The 3 on the left are mine. From the left is Jim Huber, Tom Bertsch, Shanna Williams Huber, Shelley Williams Bertsch and Bob Williams. They did pretty well and are being called back for another season. It was a lot of fun. We went to Atlanta for the taping at the end of May. (sent by Sharon and Bob Williams)

My kids were also on a segment of the Family Feud that the TODAY show taped with Al Roker while we were in Atlanta for the show’s taping. The picture is of the “Feud Kids” that were on the show and my other daughter, Sherry Pickerel, standing next to me. (Sent by Sharon Williams)

From The Editor Welcome back to the first wave of snowbirds who will be arriving this month. Much has happened since you were away and many new people have taken up residency in Tropic Isles. I would like to encourage all residents to show their support for the wonderful activities that Tropic Isles has to offer. In my interviews with new residents, I frequently hear how much they enjoy Tropic Isles and how welcoming and friendly everyone is, but sometimes new residents get forgotten when we make plans to be with our friends and neighbors at a function. In that regard, it would be nice if everyone made a special effort to include our new residents with an invitation to join you at your table for a dance or another event. You might invite a new resident to attend an activity with you, so they can feel comfortable knowing someone there during their first visit. Don’t forget to make them feel welcome once they are there. I know there is a lot of Tropic Isles hospitality out there! Let’s really try and show it! New residents! Come on out and get involved in the activities Tropic Isles has to offer. Volunteers are always needed and wel-come! There’s something for everyone here in Tropic Isles!

Breezes Delivery As we all know, our Tropic Isles’ Newsletters are delivered by our volunteer Block Captains. It is very hard for these volunteers to know where to place your newsletter if you do not have a designated spot by your door that can hold your paper. The Block Captains cannot put the newsletters into your USPS mailbox and we hate to leave them on the stairs on windy days as the papers end up all over the park. Please have a spot that is easy to figure out for your BLOCK CAPTAIN to leave your paper and something to weigh it down, if necessary. If you don’t have a handy spot, they will return your copy to the office and you can pick it up there at your convenience. Don’t forget to thank your Block Captain for their service.

~~Special Thanks~~ Thanks to all the Block Captains who so willingly delivered the Breezes over the summer in the heat. Also thanks to those people who helped out in a time of need while some of the Block Captains were on vacation.

Laughter Is The Best Medicine! Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble. In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull from the stockyard in a far town so that they can breed their own stock. They only have $600 left. Upon leaving, the brunette tells her sister, “When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I’ll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home.” The brunette arrives at the stockyard, inspects the bull, and decides she wants to buy it. The man tells her that he will sell it for $599, no less. After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news. She walks into the telegraph office and says, “I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I’ve bought a bull for our ranch. I need her to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.” The telegraph operator explains that he’ll be glad to help her, then adds, “It’s just 99 cents a word.” Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette only has $1 left. She realizes that she’ll only be able to send her sister one word. After a few minutes of thinking, she nods and says, “I want you to send her one word: comfortable.” The operator shakes his head. “How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her just the word “comfortable?” The brunette explains, “My sister’s blonde. The word’s big. She’ll read it very slowly ... com-for-da-bull.”

4. Fold the remaining pineapple into the Cool Whip and spread on top of the cream cheese mixture. (You can use less Cool Whip if you wish.) Sprinkle the remaining graham cracker crumb mixture on top. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.

reCyCling In the past, the recycling was picked up using the two (2) blue bins, but with the new contract the new, blue 64 gallon carts are now used. There are some specific instructions when setting these carts out at the curb. The cart has arrows saying “This Side to the Curb” which is the side on which the lid opens, not the handle side. This is important as Waste Management is moving to an automated one-man operation. Some areas are already being serviced in this manner, and only the 64-gallon cart that is placed at the curb in the correct manner will be serviced. If you place the small blue bins out by the curb for recycling, expect them to be taken by the vendor as they are not serviceable containers.

Javier Vargas, Deputy Director of Public Works(Note: Residents who do not have a blue recycling cart at their residence when they return, should contact the Office.)

Reading Material for Vets This summer we made a donation of books and magazines to Bay Pines VA. We will continue to collect reading materials for Vets throughout the year. Magazines are great (for men or women), as are books. The library at Tropic Isles will be donating any books that are duplicates and those books that are too old to shelve. There is a collection box in our library under the magazine rack. We will take all reading items that are donated to the VA at Bay Pines. It may seem like a small thing to do, but it is greatly appreciated.

Zika Virus Warning!! Mosquitoes proteCt yourSelf, your family, anD Community

Tropic Isles’ Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) have toured the park in an effort to get the word out about the Zika Virus and are asking for your help. You are im-portant in this effort. Please help us by doing the following: Empty all pails, buckets, birdbaths, ponds, and other con-tainers that have or can collect water.  Turn over or put away all unnecessary containers so that they cannot collect water. If they contained water, scrub them out to eliminate any mosquito eggs.  This is important since the eggs can live up to 8 months before hatching! Tropic Isles’ residents with NHN have walked the park to assist in this effort.  Many snowbirds have pots and other containers left in their yard that may contain water.  We have emptied any standing water and if possible, turned the containers over to eliminate the problem. If you can help, please let us know. Thank you. Call Jan Krueger 262-617-0710 or Denny Vitton 231-645-5021

Do something wonderful for someone else by donating blood. You might ask WHY DONATE BLOOD? You don’t need a special reason to give blood. You just need your own reason. Some of us give blood because we were asked by a friend or relative. Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood someday. Some people believe it is the right thing to do. Whatever your reason, the need is constant and our contribu-tion is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply. You’ll feel good knowing you’ve helped change a life. The purpose of these Guidelines is to help expedite the approval and installation of your new home in Tropic Isles. Most of these guidelines are in place because they are already required by our own governing documents and/or other pertinent documents and ordinances put in place by various governmental authorities. We want to help you work as seamlessly as possible through that maze of requirements. Knowledge of the requirements and pre-planning are key to a pleasant and successful experience. The ARC (Architectural Review Committee) is in place to help you navigate through this process and to assure the overall quality of the aesthetics in Tropic Isles. The ARC is your advocate in this process. Consult your Tropic Isles governing documents for more details. All of the requirements may not necessarily be listed with the basic guidelines covered here.r ARC request for a new home must include the factory specs and drawings for the home, the elevation certificate, the ground/drainage plan, the carport/garage and shed detail, the driveway detail, the deck/porch/lanai plan including the colors of all siding, bricks, gutters, soffits, etc. r Original plan must include the landscaping plan. r If not already in place, the front yard must include one palm tree (to be approved by Management.) r Drainage from the unit gutters shall be landscaped to not allow water to enter the adjacent lot. All units shall have roof gutters and downspouts. Direct drainage to the bay via tile lines will be allowed if approved and properly permitted by the appropriate municipal agencies. Otherwise, all lots must have a positive drain-age to the street. The engineered drainage plan will accompany all New Home ARC Requests. r Water access connections to the unit shall be placed under-ground and include an approved backflow valve. r Electric meter box and disconnect switch shall be located no further from the unit than two feet and its location will be clearly indicated on the engineered construction plans. r Electrical connection/meter box must be installed as near to the new home as possible and still meet all building codes. The buyer is responsible for this expense as part of the set-up of a new home. r Plan must show the exact location of the AC unit and the gas (container) and electrical connections, including the elevation from the ground level. r Maximum consideration shall be given to the location of the AC unit as it may affect the adjacent neighbor’s peace and tranquility. The location of the existing homes’ bedrooms and outdoor leisure areas should be considered. ARC/Management will make every

reasonable attempt to notify the owners of the two adjacent lots of the installation of the new home and the location of the AC unit and exterior elements of the new site plan. Notification will, at a minimum, include a telephone call, an email, USPS, and a sign in the yard of the new home indicating that a new home is being installed on this lot. ALL shareholders are always invited to attend the ARC meetings. r Front of the home should generally line up along the street side with existing homes. Some variation may be allowed for aesthetic and code requirements. r Under no circumstances can the home be closer than 5 feet from the lot line as determined by ARC/Management. Plans must show the distance to the lot line on all four sides and the distance to the adjacent structures, street, and seawall. r Homes must be a minimum of 10’ from adjacent homes. r If there is a canal, seawall, rip-rap, etc…the back of the home can be no closer to the seawall than 10 feet. r Nothing may touch, crossover, or affix to the seawall. r Utilities such as water, sewer connections, electrical, AC, or propane gas must be located near the back third of the unit as far away from the street and living spaces of the neighbors as possible. ARC/Management will have final authority. r Horizontal siding shall not extend to the ground. Brick, dec-orative block or other materials as approved by the ARC, shall be used on the bottom skirting of the unit. The height of the decorative skirting shall be equal to at least three rows of brick. Other reasonable alternative designs will be considered by the ARC/Management on a case-by-case basis. The walls must have hydrostatic relief vents (flow through). The vents must be at least 1”/square foot of floor space on two opposite walls. Vents must be within 12” of grade. r Silt fences must be in place during every phase of construction and especially at the end of each day until the CO is issued and the landscaping is in place. This is the responsibility of the owner. r Damage to any adjacent structures, streets, seawall, landscap-ing etc. is the responsibility of the new owner. The Co-op will seek damages from the owner. The owner may have recourse against the contractor(s). r North/South/East/West must be shown on all pages of all site plans. r Pre-planning with ARC/Management will help to prevent misunderstandings and delays in the construction of your new home –ask questions, take notes! r There MUST be a pre-construction meeting with the builder, the site manager, the lot owner, Tropic Isles manager, and at least two ARC Committee members to go over the plans/site BEFORE ARC approvals and governmental permits are issued. The date and time of this meeting will be recorded in the ARC record. We hope that the installation of your new home at Tropic Isles is one of the most pleasant and memorable events in your life as you near, or enter retirement.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do throughout this process to make it better for you and those who come after you.

How to Protect Yourself: PfishingSource: The Florida Attorney General’s Office

Phishing is the term coined by Internet scammers who imitate legitimate companies in e-mails to entice people to share user names, passwords, account information, or credit-card numbers. The term “Phishing” comes from the fact that Internet scammers are using increasingly sophisticated lures as they “fish” for users’ private information. The most common ploy is to copy the look and feel of a web page from a major site and use that design to set up a nearly identical page that appears to be part of the company’s site.

Don’t Take the Bait from a ‘Phishing’ Scam Internet scammers casting about for people’s financial infor-mation have a new way to lure un-suspecting victims: They go “phishing.” Phishing, also called “carding,” is a high-tech scam thatuses spam to deceive consumers into disclosing their credit card numbers, bank account information, Social Security numbers, passwords, and other sensitive information. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and other responsible company websites, the emails pretend to be from businesses the potential victims already have a relationship with. These include, their Inter-net service provider (ISP) and online payment service or bank. The “phisher” tells recipients that they need to “update” or “validate” their billing information to keep their accounts active and direct them to a “look-alike” Web site of the legitimate business, further tricking consumers into thinking they are responding to a bona fide request. Unknowingly, consumers submit their financial information - not to the businesses – but the scammers, who use it to order goods and services and obtain credit. Other related crimes include credit card fraud or theft and identity theft. There are several steps you can take to make sure you never fall for one of these scams:•Ifyougetanemailthatwarnsyou, withlittleornonotice, thatan account of yours will be shut down unless you reconfirm your billing information, DO NOT click on the link in the email. Instead, contact the company cited in the email using a telephone number or Web site address you know to be genuine.•Avoidemailingpersonalandfinancialinformation.Beforesub-mitting financial information through a Web site, look for the “lock” icon on the browser’s status bar. It signals that your information is secure during transmission.•Reviewcreditcardandbankaccountstatementsassoonasyoureceive them to determine whether there are any unauthorized

charges. If your statement is late by more than a couple of days, call your credit card company or bank to confirm your billing address and account balances.•Alwaysensurethatyou’reusingasecureserverwhen submitting credit card information. To make sure you’re using a secure server, check the beginning of the web address in your browsers address bar - it should be https://rather than just http://. The “s” stands for “secure”.•Contact yourbankor credit cardcompany if you thinkyoumay have replied to a fraudulent E-Mail with sensitive personal information.•[email protected]. If you believe you’ve been scammed, file your complaint at www.ftc.gov, and then visit the Attorney General’s Identity Theft Web site at http://myfloridalegal.com/identitytheft for information on how to protect yourself from identity theft.•FinallyMicrosofthasrecentlycreatedasecurityupdateforInter-net Explorer that will help you avoid Phishing scams. It removes a vulnerability that could allow an attacker to misrepresent the location of a Web page in the address bar of an Internet Explorer window. We strongly urge you apply this patch if your computer has Internet Explorer installed (even if you do not use Internet Explorer as your primary web browser). To install this security update, please visit: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS04-004.asp for additional information. Safety Tip of The Month---Speed Limit

The speed limit in the park is 15 mph although it is not posted on most streets. Please check your speed as you travel throughout the park. There are people riding bicycles and walking, so please slow

down, especially at corners, where people may not be visible until you turn the corner and then it is too late. Golf carts must also abide by the rules in the park. The speed limit on 28th Ave. W. is posted as 25 mph. Many people speed down 28th Ave. and create an unsafe situation for walkers, bikers, and people walking their dogs along that street.

Please drive safely and SLOW DOWN!

Tropical Red Hatters The Tropical Red Hatters will hold their month-ly meeting on Wednesday, October 5 at 10:00 AM in the Yacht Club. Recent activities have included

going to St. Armand’s Circle in Sarasota, visiting the Manatee Art League with lunch, helping M.O.T.S. prepare care packages for servicemen, and planning upcoming events.  Discussions were held about having a pot luck event soon and planning the spring ice cream social.  The Fashion Show in November is undergoing a revision as “Topaz” will not be able to come to Tropic Isles.  Join us to contribute your ideas for future outings.

Does Your Home Have Good “Curb Appeal”?

Good “curb appeal” doesn’t just mean your front yard. It also covers all sides of your prop-erty. Many prospective buyers visit our park by water and see your property from the canal view. Does your backyard have items stashed back there that need to be removed or discarded? Are the weeds growing tall and your plants over-grown? Does the back of your home have mildew growing on it? Take a good look at all sides of your property and see what can be done to improve your “curb appeal” from the canal side as well as the street side. If you leave the park for an extended stay away, please remember that weeds and plants still grow and homes get mildew on them. Don’t wait until you return in the fall or winter to address the problem. Please make sure your home and yard are taken care of while you are away! Let’s all work towards great “curb appeal”, both on the street side and canal side. Thanks for all your efforts!

Got Curb-Appeal? Is your home in need of new paint, landscaping, or other ex-terior improvements? Now is the time to show some Palmetto pride. The City of Palmetto is hosting a “Curb Appeal Contest” for businesses or residents. Those who already have great Curb Appeal will be recognized as well. CONTEST CATEGORIES •BestCurb-appeal •BestImprovement Awards include a Commercial Fishing Charter, Spa Treatments, and Gift Certificates to local businesses and home improvement stores. We have set our dates in January and February 2017 for having the photographer come and take our pictures. Look for more information in upcoming issues of Breezes. For now, we wanted you to know that it will be happening and we will be needing lots of volunteers (both experienced and newbies), so keep that in mind. Turtle Watch Turtle nesting season in Florida runs from May 1 through October 31. For beachfront residents,

renters and businesses, this means a “lights out” period. Female sea turtles emerge from the water during this time to nest on the beaches. Sea turtle hatchlings instinctively use the reflection of the moon on the water to find their way to the Gulf of Mexico. One in about 1,000 hatchlings survive into adulthood. We can help. As beachgoers, avoid any area that has been marked off with tape to signify that it is a turtle nesting zone. Remember to clean up after yourself and remove any beach chairs, etc. that you brought with you to the beach. Leave only your footprints on the sand after you leave. Many sea turtle nests were lost during Tropical Storm Hermine. For more information on sea turtles and nesting season, contact AMITW at [email protected] or call 941-778-5638.

Greetings to all Tropic Isles’ residents, friends, and guests. We certainly hope everyone had a great summer and are ready to experience another fabu-lous winter doing what you enjoy most here in the Sunshine State. Your golf league directors certainly hope some of that enjoyment will come from joining our mixed golf league. Here’s the scoop ….

TIGL will once again play each Wednesday during the months of November through March! November and December are the ramp-up months when we gather players, new ideas, and plan the actual “league” events which take place this season from January 4th to April 5th. Golfers are asked to be at the Terra Ceia Golf Club and be ready to play by 11:00 at which time the groupings are drawn and the first group can tee off at 11:15. A brief social gathering is held following play at which time the day’s activities are shared, explored, and in some cases …. explained as there are usually some interesting and entertaining shots made…. or not made! LOL! To call our league “mixed” may be an understatement! There are men and ladies with a wide variety of experiences and score levels. We also have hookers (hmmm?), slicers, duffers, hackers, whackers, and perhaps a few slackers. The common element is

always having fun, on and off the course. The focus of the league is to encourage good golf, followed immediately by a good laugh. It never ceases to amaze us how often the good laugh comes into play. The league is open to anyone who has a connection to TI resi-dents. Friends and guests are welcome to come along. Also, we would love to see more ladies getting out to enjoy the game and help to keep the guys honest. Stay tuned for news reports and more details in future articles. Any questions or suggestions are always welcome. Simply con-tact any of our returning directors. Did you know? I finally figured out how to cut 6 strokes off my score… just skip one of the par 3’s. WELCOME TO TROPIC ISLES! We would like to “officially” welcome

Barbara Welch to Tropic Isles after being hired to work in the office last February. Barbara was born in Ohio, but raised in Maryland. She moved to Florida in 1973, lived in Lakeland for a couple of years, moved to Kingston, Ontario, Canada for

3 years and then back to Florida. Barbara lived in Panama City, Florida and worked for the TDC (Tourist Development Council) there. She moved to Bradenton in 1997 and is not planning on any more moves. Barbara worked in banking for about 11 years and then worked in the office for her ex-husband’s business. After that, she worked in bookkeeping and accounting positions for an electrical con-tractor in Lakeland and for Signs Now corporate office here in Bradenton. After they downsized, she went to work for Gaunt, Inc. out on Holmes Beach doing bookkeeping and customer service. After more downsizing, she arrived here in Tropic Isles. Barbara says she is loving it here and really likes living in this area. She enjoys hiking at the parks and she and her sister go camp-ing as often as they can. Barbara enjoys nature photography and has many pictures on her computer. She has camped at many state parks throughout Florida and has visited many, but not all, of the states here in this great country. Barbara has family in several different areas of Florida and a step-son in Boston, MA. We are pleased to have Barbara join our Tropic Isles community.

We are pleased to welcome Jodie Lawman to the Tropic Isles’ office staff. Jodie and her husband, Jeff, moved to Bradenton in 2004 from Sharpsville, PA. After years of working as a paralegal in a law office, she decided to return to school for acquire her residential real estate appraisal license in 2001. When she arrived in Florida, she worked as an appraiser for Westshore Appraisal Company in Sarasota for 8 years. Thereafter, she worked as an assistant to May Aston at Remax and obtained her sales license in 2015. Jeff works as a physical therapist in Sarasota. They have one daughter and two beautiful grandsons. Jodie and Jeff spend their free time boating, scuba diving, and enjoying the company of friends. Jodie says that she looks forward to this new chapter in her life and the opportunity to meet everyone in Tropic Isles.

Please welcome Barbara Welch and Jodie Lawman to the Tropic Isles’ Office Staff. Jodie will be training during the month of September to be your contact person for resident services. Just think of Jodie as our “resident concierge” helping our neighbors wherever possible. Barbara will remain as Office Manager, but is taking on a larger role with real estate transactions, supporting the ARC and Compliance committees, and helping the Manager so he can spend more time in the community.

It’s not often you see the Gulf of Mexico, 11 miles out, looking like this…except

maybe in the summertime.

The sunsets over Tropic Isles never get old!

After two days of rain from TS Hermine dropping almost 10 inches in Tropic Isles, we had lots of street flooding. A high tide on August 31 had streets flooded all day.  This catfish did not return to the storm sewer to swim in the canal. I found it on Carlson Sellhorn’s driveway.  It was still alive, so I dropped it in the storm sewer so he could find his way home.
