The Preparation of the King (vv. 1-6)
Mark 11:1a Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives,

Jerusalem in Jesus’ Time
?
To Bethany
Bethphage

The Preparation of the King (vv. 1-6)
Mark 11:1b-3 Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’”

The Preparation of the King (vv. 1-6)
Matthew 21:2 “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her.”

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

The Preparation of the King (vv. 1-6)
Revelation 19:11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war.

“Jesus is unlike any other king who ever lived. How unlike he is to the Alexanders, Caesars and Napoleons of this world. What a contrast to the triumphal entry of ancient kings on their war-horses, riding proudly through the gates, cruel-lipped, swords held high, trailed by captive kings and princes in chains. Jesus slowly, purposefully came riding the colt of a donkey.” (R. Kent Hughes)

The Preparation of the King (vv. 1-6)
Philippians 2:8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

The Preparation of the King (vv. 1-6)
Mark 11:4-6 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go.

The Celebration of the people (vv. 7-10)
Mark 11:7-8 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields.

The Celebration of the people (vv. 7-10)
2 Kings 19:13 Then in haste every man of them took his garment and put it under him on the bare steps, and they blew the trumpet and proclaimed, “Jehu is king.”

The Celebration of the people (vv. 7-10)
Mark 11:9-10 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”

The Celebration of the people (vv. 7-10)
Psalm 118:25-26a Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Halell Psalms (Psalms 113-118)

The Compassion of the King (Luke 19:41-44)
Luke 19:41-42 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

The Compassion of the King (Luke 19:41-44)
Luke 19:43-44 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Today’s Takeaway
Up to this point, when it came to “publicity,” what was Jesus’ M.O. (modus operandi or
method of operation)?

Today’s Takeaway
- To a leper he had healed Jesus said ...
Mark 1:43-44 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone...”

Today’s Takeaway
- To evil spirits...
Mark 3:12 And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

Today’s Takeaway
- To the people who witnessed Jesus raising Jarius’ daughter from the dead...
Mark 5:43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Today’s Takeaway
Luke 19:39-40 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Today’s Takeaway
Matthew 21:10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”

Today’s Takeaway
John 12:19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

Today’s Takeaway
Jesus was not a victim as he walked the path to the cross. He was going willingly
and intentionally. The cross was God’s plan. And in moving toward it with such courage, Jesus demonstrates for us . . .
His desire to honor his Father!
His determination to redeem sinners like us!
