  • The Vick twins are still believers

    By Diane StrandbergTHE TRI-CITY NEWS

Santa will be mak-ing a special stop in Port Coquitlam tonight to greet two of his favourite teenagers.

According to Mr. Claus, Brandon and Quinton Vick deserve special recognition for their 15 years of devo-tion. The twins, who attend Terry Fox second-ary school, havent suc-cumbed to pressures to believe in anything other than the notion that an old guy in velvet and fur can still circle the globe in 24 hours to give gifts to good boys and girls.

The twins are nearly of an age for a drivers licence but they still visit Santa Land at Coquitlam Centre every year and are first in line to sit on Santas knee. He even knows them by name and asks them about their burgeoning film ca-reers (both appear in the Hallmark Channel series When Calls the Heart, airing in January).

Like many holiday tra-ditions, visiting Santa at the mall is a happy mo-ment and the Vick boys are thrilled to be part of the experience.

Why wouldnt you believe in Santa? asks Quinton.

There wouldnt be a Christmas without him, his brother Brandon chimes in.

The strapping teenag-ers still sit together on Santas ample lap, just like they have for every photo taken over the last 15 years. If you gaze at the photos, you can see the boys features have changed, but not their smiles.

Hes a jolly, happy soul, said Quinton to explain why he and his brother still enjoy visit-ing the man in red.

These are special kids, Santa acknowl-edges.

For Santa, sharing a special moment with the twins Quinton asked for a wooden baseball bat while Brandon re-quested video editing software is part of a fun time at the mall that

begins in the middle of November and runs through to Dec. 24 at 4 p.m.

He says the kids who visited him this year werent demanding, and their requests have

mostly been modest, with Lego being the most popular, although more kids are asking for video game systems and laptops these days. But he tells them he has to check with their parents

first and they acquiesce to his authority.

Kids are not outra-geous, they have fun and thats the main thing.

Meanwhile, the Vick boys will have trouble getting to sleep tonight

as they wait for Santa to arrive. Maybe this will be the year they hear him say as he drives out of sight, shouting, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good [email protected]

Twin brothers Brandon and Quinton Vick, students at Terry Fox secondary school in Port Coquitlam, have visited Santa Claus at Coquitlam Centre for each of their 15 years to get a photo.

  • MORE PHOTOSHere are some more photos taken by Tri-City News readers for Christmas. Right, Pauline Kerr took this photograph of her granddaugh-ter Sophie Snaden of Port Coquitlam in a winter won-derland. Far right, Darren Quarin of Port Moody used his camera and computer to create this striking photo illustration. He explained that he snapped a photo of Santa in a mall last Christmas, then ed-ited it for fun.

Red Nose numbers are up, get a safe ride home

With just one more night left in the Operation Red Nose campaign, the program is already breaking last years records.

Between the evening of Friday, Dec. 13 to the early morning hours of Dec. 15, 153 volunteers gave 258 rides in Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities. That is up 15% from the same time period last year, when 143 volunteers gave 223 rides.

The program has long been popular in the Tri-Cities, where 160 people received rides, but its recent expansion into New Westminster and Burnaby has driven the increase in the overall numbers.

Operation Red Nose is a safe ride home service run by volunteers over the four weekends before Christmas as well as New Years Eve. The program gets people who have been drinking over the holi-days and their vehicles home safely.

Those who wish to take advantage of the service can call 778-866-6673. For more information go to www.operationrednose.com, email [email protected] or call 604-341-0241.

  • Money is short of whats in SD43 budget for 13/14

    By Diane StrandbergThe Tri-CiTy NewS

School District 43 is in the process of ana-lyzing its financial situ-ation after the province released its holdback grants last week.

The province an-nounced that school dis-tricts would get $60 per student from funds held back at the beginning of the year in case enrol-ment was higher than forecast.

For SD43, that amount is $1.8 million, and while less than the $2.5 million budgeted for 2013/14, the district has two more opportunities to get more grants when February and May enrolments are calculated.

The Ministry of Educa-tion, meanwhile, stated in a press release that $17.8 million in holdback funding would be used to fund higher student en-rolment in some districts, $31.6 million would be distributed in $60 per-student grants and a further $10.2 million is being kept back to ad-dress enrolment growth in February and May.

By holding back this portion of the $4.725 bil-lion total funding com-mitted to K-12 education for 2013-14, the ministry is able to manage unfore-seen pressures or swings in student enrolment and

ensure all school districts are treated equitably, the ministry stated in a press release.

SD43 secretary trea-surer Mark Ferrari is awaiting other informa-tion before producing a second quarter report that shows the districts financial situation, and trustees will be given first glimpse, possibly as early as next week.

Theres a lot of ins and outs that are coming in to play, Ferrari said.

The district is also awaiting the final out-come of a forensic audit to look into how it ended up with an $8 million operating deficit last year. That report is also expected to be released to the public in the new [email protected]

CUPe OKs contractSchool District 43 school support workers

have voted in favour of a wage deal giving them a 3.5% increase between July 1, 2013 and May 1, 2014.

In a ratification vote taken Thursday, 84% of members voted in favour of the settlement, which also provides them with a drug card that allows members have their medication benefits paid up front, without the need to submit re-ceipts for medication.

The deal, reached under the provinces co-operative gains mandate, means the district will have to find savings estimated at about $985,000 this school year and $1.7 million next year to cover the cost.

In October, the district approved a savings plan that would cut transportation costs, sup-plies, utilities, special purpose funds and non-core salaries.

This is the first wage increase for the CUPE members in four years.

  • VICTORIA

One of Canadas great entrepreneurial success stories in recent years is WestJet, the Calgary-based air-line that is expanding across the country and taking on European routes.

Clive Beddoe, the founding CEO of Westjet, was famous for helping the cabin crew tidy up the plane before getting off a flight. The company is also known for its profit-sharing program, with all employees referred to as owners who have a stake in the success of the operation.

I thought of this management approach when news emerged that the B.C. government was offering public service unions a new kind of contract, with a five-year term and wage in-creases tied to improved economic growth.

The surprising thing is that unions are

accepting the idea, even though provincial growth must exceed the governments inde-pendent economic forecast council projections before it can take effect in a given year.

The generally non-militant Health Sciences Association was the first to recommend accep-tance of a five-year agreement with only 5.5% raises guaranteed. Then they were joined by negotiators for 51,000 health and social services employees represented by the BC Government Employees Union and other unions that have long been adversaries of the BC Liberals.

John Fryer, negotiator for the BCGEU going back to the epic battles with Social Credit gov-ernments and now a professor at University of Victoria, wasnt impressed when he heard the news.

These deals reflect what happens when public sector unions back the losing party in a provincial election, he said. Union bargaining power takes a trip down the pooper.

I think theres more than that going on. Perhaps todays union leadership is beginning to accept that its wage, benefit and pension

arrangements look pretty good compared to the harsh reality of private businesses competing in a global economy.

I asked Premier Christy Clark if this new approach is inspired by private-sector profit sharing. She agreed that is the model.

I think thats a great principle for all of us to work from, Clark said. Until now, the growth of public sector wages has been com-pletely insulated from changes in the private sector. And this is the first time weve ever been able to successfully link those two things. At this point, its still a small increment wage growth but its a big change, and I hope we can continue to build on it.

From an employee perspective, it is indeed modest. If real gross domestic product in-creases 1% beyond the independent forecast used in the provincial budget, employees get an additional 0.5% raise for that year.

Contrast this labour relations development with whats happening on the federal scene. A

classic confrontation is brewing between the Harper government and the Public Service Alliance of Canada. A key dispute is over sick days, which the government estimates are averaging 18 a year. PSAC currently has 15 bankable sick days a year, which the union

president refers to as a negotiated right. It takes me back to my first union job,

where I was warned never to take just one sick day. We negotiated for two at a time, so always take two, the union rep told me. Implicit in this was the mindset that employees should give as little and take as much as possible.

Looking through my files each December for the B.C. story of the year, I consider what is likely to matter five or 10 years from now.

This partnership approach to building the provincial economy is my pick for 2013.

The biggest idea of 2013: co-operation

Folly-la-la-laIn the holiday season, perhaps some silliness could be forgiven. But the actions of MP James Moore and Port Moody council in the last two weeks are so atrocious as to be beyond folly.

In Moores case, the savvy MP for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam was widely excoriated for say-ing to a radio reporter: Is it my job to feed my neighbours child? I dont think so.

Several days later, he posted a statement on his website, saying: In response to a question from a reporter last week, I made an insensitive comment that I deeply regret. I apologize.

But responding to online criticism in the two days previ-ous, he had tweeted, The headline is neither a quote, nor accurate of anything Ive ever said. Quite ridiculous in fact and said he wouldnt apologize for being lied about.

Now, MP Moore is an intelligent man and a fair review of his time in government will show that he has, among other things, managed to attract considerable federal funding to important Tri-City projects. But the in-between of the com-ment and the apology is deeply troubling: First, he made dishonest statements about his comments and, in doing so, impugned the radio reporters reputation; second, he appar-ently thought he could get away with it despite the fact his original comment was recorded.

In Port Moody, meanwhile, council held a special meet-ing Dec. 17 to approve funding to help operators of the burned Mossom Creek Hatchery. Good news.

But at the same special meeting held with no com-munity TV cameras or reporters present, and only a single citizen on hand council voted itself sizable raises: more than 29% for councillors and more than 16% for the mayor.

What city council members should be paid is a topic for another day. The cynical way in which they set that pay last week, well out of the public eye, isnt.

And we find it difficult to believe that in these media-savvy times, not one of Port Moodys seven council mem-bers would step up and say something like: I fully support these raises. But perhaps this vote, which will undoubtedly be controversial, should be held at a regular council meet-ing in the New Year, so we dont look like weve done some-thing to be ashamed of.

    Which, now, they do.Silly, too.

The Editor,Re. Lots of help for

Mossom (The Tri-City News, Dec. 18).

On behalf of the vol-unteers at the Mossom Creek Hatchery, I wish to express profound gratitude for the surge of community kindness since the Dec. 11 fire.

City of Port Moody council and staff have backed us from the instant we called in the blaze that quickly turned our be-loved hatchery and envi-ronmental education cen-tre to ashes. We are deeply grateful for the rapid and fulsome response from the city, which has included a $10,000 emergency fund and the loan of a trailer to get us back in operation on site.

Messages have poured in with kind words and offers of assistance equipment, labour, fund-raising, project manage-ment, planning, building, volunteer co-ordination, grant writing, documen-tation and archival re-search.

Funds to rebuild are coming from elementary, middle and secondary school fundraisers, in-dividuals, organizations and companies too nu-merous to mention here.

Centennial students even from the late 1970s are offering their photos

and news clippings to rebuild our history. Our Mossom Facebook page is incredibly active with powerful reminiscing. Promises of big ticket items for a significant fundraiser are emerging.

We are deeply touched by all these gifts and by so many expressions of con-dolence. These have come not only from those who have experienced our edu-cational and enhancement work in the watershed but from many who have never been there. It tells us that our community places a high value on na-ture and nature education.

We thank The Tri-City News for its extensive stories. This has helped to bring the public to us at a time when we need support more than ever.

We are currently in the process of organizing our rebuilding team in order to take advantage of the generosity being offered by so many. Due to the proximity of the holidays, this will take a few weeks. We humbly request some patience as we reflect about what this rebuild should look like. We look forward to sharing this new vision in early January and will be welcoming input from the community.Ruth Foster, Co-founder, Mossom Creek Hatchery

MP for comments (Letters, The Tri-City News, Dec. 18).

In response to letter writer Jane Thomsing suggesting that MP

James Moore host a breakfast for malnour-ished children, who would pay for this?

Although I would be happy to donate for this, it definitely wouldnt be funded by Moore. The

cost would be taken out of taxpayer funds and if, by chance, Moore did fund it, taxes could be increased to cover his losses with a pay in-crease.P. Baillie, Coquitlam

  • Construction causing North Rd. biz issues

    By Diane StrandbergThe Tri-CiTy News

The busy Christmas shopping season has been a bust for some businesses in Coquitlam where Evergreen Line construction is in full swing. Instead of busy aisles and manicure sta-tions, the stores and shops in a mini-mall at 555 North Rd. are unusu-ally quiet, the owners say.

Our business is threatened, said Grigori Khaskin, who owns Euro Foods with his wife Svetlana.

In October, street parking was removed to make way for construc-tion of columns for the elevated rapid transit system, and Khaskin said customers are turn-ing away, either because they cant find parking on a side street or be-cause a small lot at the side of the mall is full.

While shelves are piled high with Russian chocolates, Ukrainian cakes, Polish pickles and Austrian cheese, the aisles are surprisingly empty. Svetlana Khaskin said staff hours have been cut and deliveries have been delayed.

When it snows the sit-uation gets even worse she said, because cus-tomers cant get down the steep ramp into the side parking lot.

And delivery, its a nightmare because trucks can not stop nor-mally, Grigori said.

In one instance, a pal-let of food spilled on the sidewalk when the dolly carrying it down the ramp tipped over.

Two other businesses are concerned about their bottom line because of the removal of street parking, a situation which is expected to last until mid-March.

This time last year, we were so busy, said Linda Pham, owner of Phat Nail and Spa. Now, business is so slow staff sit and play cards be-cause they have nothing to do.

Elitech Computer owner Fay Li said park-ing is so tight in the area that customers have to park blocks away and lug computers to her store. Some are simply going elsewhere to avoid the hassle. Christmas time is supposed to be busiest, Li said.

    T h e b u s i n e s s e s

would like to see more h e l p f r o m E G RT Construction, which is building the Evergreen Line, or the Ministry of Transportation to find a solution to the parking lot. One idea would be to negotiate space at some of the nearby businesses with large parking lots.

E v e r g r e e n L i n e spokesperson Amanda Farrell, said businesses were told to expect lane closures on North Road until mid-March 2014. On-street parking will not be available until then, she stated in an email.

In the meantime, she said staff will follow up with Euro Foods and in-vite the owners to par-ticipate in an Evergreen Line business liaison committee, which was established two years ago to address concerns of [email protected]

Hondas contemporary on a dying breed2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6

Its fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time. Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this. Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations. One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling. In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not re-placed with newer models. Im thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6.

Looks The Accord Coupe is based on the all-new Accord sedan that has been selling very well for Honda. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year this year as decided by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada. Honda has done a good job of updating this big coupe with a more modern twist. Sold in three configurations from the base EX to the EX-L Navi (L stand for leather and navi is self-explanatory),

which are both 4-cylinder equipped models. The top trim is the EX-L Navi with V6. This top trim level is the model seen here: it comes with LED projector head-lamps, 18-inch wheels and duel chrome exhaust tips. The 4-cylinder equipped models come with halogen headlamps and 17-inch alloy wheels. The coupe starts at $26,400, a $2,500 premium over the regular sedan but when the sedan is equipped with alloy wheels, the price is almost identical. The EX-L is $30,100 for the leather and navi and the V6 premium is $35,500. Not an inexpensive car but most are very well equipped.

Inside Its a big and comfortable coupe. The back seat is actually usable for adults and the front seats are very comfortable. The trunk is huge and the back seat folds for extra long items but the seats do not split and fold, plus the opening to the back seat is small. Standard feature on all Accord models is a backup camera and heated seats. Honda, in my opinion, has raised the bar in the mid-sized category and produced the nicest dash I have seen in this class. There are two screens in the centre console, one for the navigation unit and the other for the radio. They are framed in beautiful, high quality satin metal, chrome and soft touch materials. One area that could be improved is the

way the radio stores and retrieves pre-set radio stations. It took a long time to set the stereo up and having to go back and forth between different screens is not that intuitive. The rest of the dash is large, with big cup holder and plenty of storage areas. The steering wheel buttons and heat controls on the dash use first rate switches and they are placed with precision.

Drive Another trend that Honda is bucking, with this Accord Coupe, is the inclusion of a 6-speed manual transmission and V6 engine. The latest movement is to turbo or super-charged 4-cylinder engines to replace V6 power plants and duel clutch automatic transmission in favour of a manual. Im glad that Honda still offers this layout; it shows they are serious about being a true enthusiasts car company. Granted, most buyers will get the very good 6-speed automatic transmission with the 3.5L V6, but with 278hp and 252 lb.-ft. of torque it will be a very lively car in either configuration. The manual is a joy to use and it is like a throwback to drive a V6 equipped manual car. The 4-cylin-der models have 185hp from a direct injection 2.4L engine and either a manu-al transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) for added fuel sav-ings. The CVT is capable of 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway. The

V6 uses more at 10.0L/100km in the city and 6.1L on the highway.

Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission. I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most compa-nies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now. Soon Honda will have smaller turbo-charged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.
