“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence
of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1
TheTranscendent
Legacy!
We will all, someday, leave behind a legacy!
“The Harbor Bridge crossed over the Port of Corpus
Christi. It was a high steel arc, tall
enough to grant barges and
freighters access to the ship channel,
and stood where the old…
…drawbridge once did. The city had
hosted a contest to name the bridge, and the winner, a
housewife who lived out by the oil
refineries, was given the honor of riding in
the first car…
…to drive across. That was in 1959. She wore a pillbox hat and white satin gloves. She posed
for pictures with the mayor. Years later, when she died, her
family walked…
…to the top of the bridge and scattered her ashes over the
lilting water.” (Bret Anthony Johnston in Remember Me Like This)
We tend to define life, our
life, by concrete
quantifiable standards!
…but is that all there is?
Is that even the most
important?
Is it possible that life’s
greatest legacy is a
transcendent reality?
Matthew 16:17“Jesus answered and
said to him, “Blessed are you,
Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”
I Corinthians 15:50
“Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God...”
Hebrews 11:1-6
1 “Now faith is the substance of things
hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the
elders obtained a good testimony.
3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things
which are seen were not made of things
which are visible. 4 By faith Abel offered to
God…
…a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he
obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts;
and through it he being dead still
speaks.
5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he
did not see death, “and was not found,
because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that
he pleased God.
6 But without faith it is impossible to
please Him, for he who comes to God
must believe that He is, and that He is a
rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
The Parameterof Faith
TheStarting Place!
Hebrews 11:1(The Message)
“The fundamental fact of existence is that this
trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation
under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what
we can’t see.”
The Foundationof Faith
TheRevelatory
Reality!
Romans 10:17“So then faith
comes by hearing, and hearing by
the word of God..”
Luke 4:4“But Jesus
answered him, saying, “It is
written, ‘Man shall not live by bread
alone, but by every word of God.’”
The Demandof Faith
TheEssential
Response!
Faith must be active!
Faith demands action, a
response!
James 2:26
“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is
dead.”
Faith is the Transcendent
Legacy
‘It’ is essential because, by ‘It’ we can know God, and by knowing God we can Know all else!
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the
sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything
else.” C. S. Lewis
