Russia won the 2018 bidding contest inDecember. England received only twovotes — fewer than the joint bids fromNetherlands-Belgium and Spain-Portugal.

In a separate case, Warner was sus-pended by FIFA on Sunday in connectionwith allegations of bribery in Mohamedbin Hammam’s bid to unseat Sepp Blatterin the presidential elections onWednesday. Bin Hammam also was sus-pended and pulled out of the race.

Giants’ Posey out for season after surgery

MILWAUKEE (AP) — San FranciscoGiants catcher Buster Posey is out for theseason after having surgery Sunday torepair three torn ligaments in his anklesustained in a collision at home plate lastweek.

“He’s not going to be back this season,”head athletic trainer Dave Groeschnersaid in a conference call with reporters.“He will have another surgery somewherein the 8- to 10-week mark to take outsome of that hardware that the doctorsput in. That’s already determined. ... Addthat to rehab time, and I don’t see himmaking it back this season.”

Groeschner said Posey had two screwsinserted into his lower leg to stabilize theankle over a surgery that lasted about 90minutes early Sunday morning.

“We’re very pleased with how his anklecame back together. He had that fracturedfibula as well,” Groeschner said. “After re-X-raying the fracture, we felt like we did-n’t really need to do anything with that, which was nice.”

The 2010 NL Rookie of the Year brokea bone in his lower left leg and injured theankle in a collision with Florida’s ScottCousins on Wednesday night. Groeschnersaid the team is optimistic Posey will beready for opening day next season, butthat he has a long road ahead.
