Celebration @ San Esteban (Feast of St. Stephen)- 2014

A different type of celebration was held – it was ecumenical and Fr Enrique

prepared a meal which took place during the celebration, following a

Brazilian custom. Therefore, we interspersed readings with comments,

food and beverages, memoires of San Esteban and the presence of many

who are part of the history of this Parish-Home.

Liturgical symbols (4) OILS & UNCTIONS

INTRODUCTION

In all religions there are elements that are always present, are

understood by the faithful in various ways and received

through the five senses. The communication link between the

one who proclaims the religious message and the receiver can

be direct or indirect. In the first case we encounter the signals

(conventionally, an object means something practical: traffic lights, for example) and signs (the link between the

object and its meaning is in the nature of the object: lion = strength). In the second case we find the symbols.

An example: the wedding ring. The object participates in the symbolized truth and makes it effective (love and

marital fidelity). The symbols are based on basic human relationships and bind two different realities, who are

called to be united (sim-bolein = march together, in Greek). In Christian liturgy, symbols are widely used to

communicate in all its fulness (using our reason and our intuition) the mystery of God´s communication with

humans: light, incense, water, oil, flowers, altar, the cross - are some of them.

I.- General Information.- The use of oil, from animal or vegetable origins, is a constant in human cultural history, fulfilling basic needs in areas such as nourishment, welfare, illumination, health and religion. Herewith, we´ll refer to its use in the Mediterranean and Near East areas. The oil for common usage was olive oil, obtained through the pressing of fruits to produce the oil, thereafter placed in jars, for home use or in amphoras for storage or trade. Daily use of olive oil included: a) cooking; b) medicinal purposes: to keep wounds soft and as the basis for creams and balms; c) physical activities: prior to competition, fights and battles; d) illumination: fuel for lamps; e) welfare: basic element for cosmetics and to prevent the drying of hair and skin in hot climates; f) social uses: a sign of hospitality --the host offered the guest at his arrival, water for his feet and aromatized oil for his head and body. In all these cases, ordinary oil was employed (called "second pressing oil"). However, for religious or ceremonial procedures, simply a "virgin oil" or "first pressing oil" was used, many times mixed with perfumes such as myrrh, balsam, spikenard, cinnamon, cassia, roses, aromatic cane, among other more common ones. II.- Religious and Ceremonial usage.- The use in temples was generally for utilitarian purposes: illumination, as well as in certain sacrifices, and specially for the sacred unctions, always using oil of the finest quality. To be annointed meant a blessing and the opposite, was seen as a deprivation. A) In the O.T.- The "menorah" (candle holder of 7 branches) was to be kept continually supplied with pure oil (Ex. 27, 20-21), and there was a festival, the Feast of the Lights ("Hanukkah") in 1 Mac.4 associated with oil and with the rededication of the Temple by Judas Maccabeus. Oil was poured on the altar as it was put up and before being used, indicating its sacredness (Gn. 35,14). Oil was also poured onto the heads of prophets, priests and kings (Lv. 8,30; Is. 61, 1; 1 Sm. 10,1; 16,13) to mark the beginning of their ministries and reign, meaning that these people had been consecrated and were given a special task by God himself. Through the symbolic annointing, they received the gift of special protection and wisdom to fullfil the divine task with which they had been entrusted. It is within this context that one finds the expression "The Lord´s Annointed", Messiah in Hebrew or Christ in Greek. These words would be adopted by Christianity and linked to the person and mission of Jesus of Nazareth.

B) In the N. T.- The use of oil as well as annointing, appear several times: Mt. 6, 16-18; 25, 1-13; Mc. 6,13; 14,3; Lc. 4,18; 7,46.- A basic text which supports the annointing of sick people is James 5, 13-15. What is most important to highlight, is the incorporation of the title "Annointed" to the name of Jesus, who becomes "the" Messiah, the Christ, fulfilling the prophecy of Is. 61,1-10, which Jesus himself used, when referring to himself, according to Lc. 4, 14-21. C) Within Christianity.- In Eastern as well as in Western Christendom, pure olive oil and/or mixed with perfume, has been used in various rituals/liturgies, keeping to the meanings already mentioned. The strenghthening quality of oil and fragrance of its perfume, symbolize the fullness of sacramental grace, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as the sweetness of Christian virtues. Oil, especially consecrated by Bishops during Holy Week, receives various names: mystical chrism, chrism of salvation, oil of gladness, good oil, oil of prayer. Holy oil continues to be used thru these 2.000 years of Church history, as a liturgical symbol at the celebration of the sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders), in the Ministration of the Sick and in special rites, such as the dedication of churches and bells, the consecration of altars and sacred vessels for worship. At this moment in history, it continues to be used by a wide range of churches, including the Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Anglicans and Neo-Pentecostals D) Within Anglicanism.- In Cranmer's Book of Common Prayer (BCP) of 1549, its use was preserved in the rite for Ministering to the Sick, but in the 1552 BCP it was not included, until the mid XIXth century, when it was reinstated as an option, as a result of the Oxford Movement. At the beginning of the XXth century its use widened to begin with, within the the new BCPs of USA and Scotland (1929) and of South Africa. In 1935 the Synod of the Church of England passed a resolution approving the use in that country. At present, holy oils continue to be prepared with the traditional blending of pure olive oil and fragrances and their consecration, within Anglicanism, is carried out by Bishops within the Cathedral on the morning of Maundy Thursday -- following an ancient tradition. The oil is then is distributed among the parishes to be used at Baptism and in the Ministry to the Sick. In the BCP in use in Uruguay, its use is regulated and appears on pages 307-8, 419, 456. It can be used at Ordinations (512 a 551) and also at the consecration of a new altar (573 and 575). III.- CONCLUSIONS- As we have seen, oil and annointings (or unctions) are supported by biblical texts, both within the O.T. and the N.T. That's why Churches have preserved their use along the centuries till the present day. Their use does not mean idolatry nor magic and they are not an invention of one church on another. Oil and unctions are deeply symbolic - expressions of God´s grace and power - acting within us and instilling the necessary energy and gifts which are needed to fulfill His will in the world where He has placed us, in order that we, being strenthened and nurtured by Him, may carry forth His plan of salvation for the whole of creation.

Fr. Enrique Illarze, OblSB. Note: During the coming months, Fr Enrique will be sharing the following subjects with us: flowers, bread and wine, altar, ambry, cross/crucifix, vestments, ornaments, bells, temple.

... Philippe writes about his experience: ...''None of the diverse forms of prayer (defined

as the elevation of the mind and heart to God) fulfilled my longing until I met the prayer of

the heart: meditation. During my ongoing quest, I had the opportunity to participate in a

silent retreat in Cordoba, Argentina, with Fr Laurence Freeman, OSB, director of the World

Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM in English)

As national Coordinator since mid-2012, my role is to spread the news about Christian

meditation, help the meditators with a range of resources and activities (retreats,

lectures, books, CDs, training courses, miscellaneous promotional material), organizing

weekly meditation groups, preparing group coordinators and ultimately, sharing the

breath of the Holy Spirit, so that this huge gift which I´ve received may reach as many

people as possible. Within all of this, there is a pearl: meditation with children – God´s

marvel which children enjoy at that contemplative stage of their lives. ''

Thank you, Philippe!
