It is said that history is a recording of theworks of the great, but in this history of theClass of '54 cf D. C. T. S., there are no facts so
outstanding as to change the course of civiliza-
tions. Nevertheless, the events leading to thegolden days of graduation here have been variedand colorful.
Studies, social events, teachers, and class-
mates are all worthy of a place in this record. It should be most interesting to those concerned;so it is hereby preserved that those beyond thesewalls may know our lives and that years to
come may not dim our memories.
On September 1, 1950, Miss S. J. Butlergreeted 37 "greenies" as her homeroom class.
We elected Irma Burke as president and lost notime beginning our struggle to reach our goal.
This was a very prosperous, enjoyable, andexciting year; for we entered many clubs andtook part in the various activities on the campus. Many of our classmates succeeded in attainingand maintaining the honor roll. Zelda Flint andRuth Rucker were secretary and treasurer, re-
spectively, of the N. H. A. Chapter. We hadloads of fun preparing for and entertaining theten schools of the Seventh District N. H. A.Rally. We were thrilled, too, at our singingabilities. At one of the assembly programs, our class won a prize in a contest for singingour Alma Mater.
We came back again in the fall of 1951and began our career as sophomores. We wereno longer "green" and we felt that we knewjust everything. Although several members de-serted us, we did not become disheartened
—
we just worked harder and with more determi-nation to succeed under the guidance of Mrs.M. D. Hudson as our homeroom teacher.
Eight of our group were chosen as debu-tantes for the annual Debutante Ball sponsoredby the Alpha Alpha Zeta Chapter of the ZetaPhi Beta Sorority, Inc. We made several fieldtrips in connection with our class activities. The visit to the Filter Plant was most interest-ing. Roland Cain went to Georgia to attendthe National Convention of the N. F. A.
1952 saw us as Juniors, a fact hard to be-lieve, but most welcomed. Robert Dunn, a
member of oui class and an outstanding basket-ball player, left us to answer Uncle Sam's callto serve our country. We need not remind youthat we are proud of him. We were proud, too,of the nine Junior girls who maintained an aver-age that admitted them into membership ofthe Crown and Scepter Club. They were: Nel-lie, Ruth, Dorothy, Irma, Louise, Johnie Mae,Mary Foster, and both Rubys.
Miss White, our homeroom teacher, help-ed us experience the most exciting event of ourschool days—the Prom. Our memories willnever dim as to what happened when we tookthat imaginary trip to visit the Atlantic Beachin Atlantic City, New Jersey. We enjoyed thefrolics under the mammoth umbrella that span-ned the greater portion of the gymtorium. Wemust tell how much we enjoyed all that comesfrom a concession stand on the beach: hot dogs, cokes, ice cream cones, and all types of souve-nirs. Music furnished by Cleveland HighSchool's band from Shelby was "real gone."
At last, we are seniors and 25 of the orig-inal 37 managed to withstand the obstacles ofhigh school life. With two newcomers, we arepreparing for graduation. Our past three yearshave taught us that instead of knowing every-thing, we have everything to learn. Mrs. C.L. Massey is our advisor and together we areplanning an eventful climax to our high schoolcareer. Already we have taken a trip to Greens-boro for their annual high school day. A fewof us went to Statesville to the N. H. A. Rally. We supported "Nell" as a contestant in theA. & T.'s Alumni Sweetheart contest. Sheranked third and received a cash award. Forour own Homecoming, Louise Allen was ourcontestant.
Now as we are about to embark on thegreat highway of life, we are taking with usthe possession rightfully gained and that wedeem priceless—the joys and memories thatour studies, social events, teachers, and class-mates have wrought for us as high schoolstudents in the Davie County Training School.

Class Poem
We, the Senior class of fifty-four,
Can hear opportunity at our door.
Our task is not finished, just begun. We're all in this race, and so—must run.
Although there are some who stopped bythe way.
For twelve years we've yearned for this day.Yet, we who are here must do all we can,To strive for success as originally planned.
As graduation nears, let's not be sad,
Let's smile and rejoice and try to be glad,School mates you'll soon be taking our place,You have our best wishes for a successful race.To the teachers and principal we regret leav-ing you,
But as far more education, we'd like some too,You, dear parents with your guiding care,Accept our pledge to do and to dare.
