The Time Machine  is a  scence cton no.ella  by 5 G Iells, published in 1895 and later adapted into two eaturel-s of the same name, as well as two  tele.son versions, and a large number of co-c boo!  adaptations. t indirectly

inspired many more wor!s of  cton in many media. "his #$,%%% word story is generally credited with the popularisation of the

concept of  t-e tra.el using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. "he term &time machine&,

coined by 'ells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle. "his wor! is an early e(ample of the D6ng Eart+subgenre.

History

'ells had considered the notion of t-e tra.el before, in an earlier wor! titled The Chronic Argonauts. He had thought of

using some of this material in a series of articles in the Pall Mall Gazette, until the publisher as!ed him if he could instead

write a  seral no.el  on the same theme) 'ells readily agreed, and was paid V1%% *e+ual to about 9,%%% today- on its

publication by 5ene-ann  in 1895. "he story was first published in serial form in the anuary to /ay numbers of Illa-Ernest 5enle60s new venture  New Review.[1] "he first boo! edition *possibly prepared from a different manuscript- [2]  was

 published in ew 2or! by 5enr6 5olt an Co-&an6 on 3 /ay 1895) an 4nglish edition was published by Heinemann on $9

/ay.[1]  "hese two editions are different te(tually, and are commonly referred to as the &Holt te(t& and &Heinemann te(t&

respectively. early all modern reprints reproduce the Heinemann te(t."he story reflects 'ells0s own socalst  political views, his view on life and abundance, and the contemporary angst about

nustral relatons. t is also influenced by Ra6 %an!ester's theories about social degeneration.[#] ther science fiction

wor!s of the period, including Ear ella-60s Looking Backward and the later Metropolis, dealt with similar themes.Plot summary

"he boo!0s  &rotagonst  is an 4nglish  scentst  and gentleman  n.entor  living in Rc+-on, 6urrey, identified by a

narrator simply as the "ime "raveller. "he narrator recounts the "raveller0s lecture to his wee!ly dinner guests that time is simply afourth -enson, and his demonstration of a tabletop model machine for travelling through it. He reveals that he has built a

machine capable of carrying a person, and returns at dinner the following wee! to recount a remar!able tale, becoming the newnarrator.n the new narrative, the "ime "raveller tests his device with a 7ourney that ta!es him to 8%$,3%1 (D, where he meets the Elo, asociety of small, elegant, childli!e adults. "hey live in small communities within large and futuristic yet slowly deteriorating buildings, doing no wor! and having a rug.orous diet. His efforts to communicate with them are hampered by their lac! of

curiosity or discipline, and he speculates that they are a peaceful co--unst society, the result of humanity con+uering nature

with technology, and subse+uently evolving to adapt to an environment in which strength and intellect are no longer advantageousto survival.eturning to the site where he arrived, the "ime "raveller finds his time machine missing, and eventually wor!s out that it has been dragged by some un!nown party into a nearby structure with heavy doors, loc!ed from the inside, which resembles a 6phin(.ater in the dar!, he is approached menacingly by the orloc!s, a&e:li!e troglo6tes who live in dar!ness underground and

surface only at night. 'ithin their dwellings he discovers the machinery and industry that ma!es the above:ground paradise

possible. He alters his theory, speculating that the human race has evolved into two species; the leisured classes have become theineffectual 4loi, and the downtrodden or!ng classes  have become the brutish light:fearing /orloc!s. <educing that the

/orloc!s have ta!en his time machine, he e(plores the /orloc! tunnels, learning that they feed on the 4loi. His revised analysis

is that their relationship is not one of lords and servants but of livestoc! and ranchers, and with no real challenges facing either species. "hey have both lost the intelligence and character of /an at its pea!./eanwhile, he saves an 4loi named 'eena from drowning as none of the other 4loi ta!e any notice of her, and they develop aninnocently affectionate relationship over the course of several days. He ta!es 'eena with him on an e(pedition to a distant

structure that turns out to be the remains of a museum, where he finds a fresh supply of matches and fashions a crude weaponagainst /orloc!s, whom he fears he must fight to get bac! his machine. He plans to ta!e 'eena bac! to his own time. Because the

long and tiring 7ourney bac! to 'eena0s home is too much for them, they stop in the forest, and they are then overcome by/orloc!s in the night, and 'eena faints. "he "raveller escapes only when a small fire he had left behind them to distract the/orloc!s catches up to them as a forest fire) 'eena is presumably lost in the fire, as are the /orloc!s."he /orloc!s use the time machine as bait to ensnare the "raveller, not understanding that he will use it to escape. He travelsfurther ahead to roughly #% million years from his own time. "here he sees some of the last living things on a dying 4arth,menacing reddish crab:li!e creatures slowly wandering the blood:red beaches chasing butterflies in a world covered in simple

vegetation. He continues to ma!e short 7umps through time, seeing 4arth0s rotation gradually cease and the sun grow dimmer, andthe world falling silent and free=ing as the last degenerate living things die out.verwhelmed, he returns to his laboratory, arriving 7ust three hours after he originally left. nterrupting dinner, he relates hisadventures to his disbelieving visitors, producing as evidence two strange flowers 'eena had put in his poc!et. "he originalnarrator ta!es over and relates that he returned to the "ime "raveller0s house the ne(t day, finding him in final preparations for

another 7ourney. "he "raveller promises to return in half an hour, but three years later, the narrator despairs of ever learning what became of him.Deleted text

> section from the 11th chapter of the serial published in  New Review */ay, 1895- was deleted from the boo!. t was drafted atthe suggestion of 'ells0s editor, Illa- Ernest 5enle6, who wanted 'ells to &oblige your editor& by lengthening the te(t

with, among other things, an illustration of &the ultimate degeneracy& of man. &"here was a slight struggle,& 'ells later recalled,&between the writer and '. 4. Henley who wanted, he said, to put a little 0writing0 into the tale. But the writer was in reaction fromthat sort of thing, the Henley interpolations were cut out again, and he had his own way with his te(t.& [4] "his portion of the story

was published elsewhere as & *+e Gre6 an&. "he deleted te(t was also published by @orrest J (c!er-an in an issue of the

>merican edition of Perry Rhodan.

"he deleted te(t recounts an incident immediately after the "raveller0s escape from the /orloc!s. He finds himself in the distantfuture of an unrecognisable 4arth, populated with furry, hopping herbivores. He stuns or !ills one with a roc!, and upon closer e(amination realises they are probably the descendants of humans?4loi?/orloc!s. > gigantic, centipede:li!e art+ro&o

approaches and the "raveller flees into the ne(t day, finding that the creature has apparently eaten the tiny humanoid."he Easton Press edition of the novel restores this deleted segment.

'ells also re7ected sections from his own drafts in which he has the "ime "raveller visit the @uritan era, where he is attac!ed by a@uritan preacher and then by Aromwell0s ronsides. He also has the narrator speculate that the ultimate origin of the 4loi?/orloc! split was rooted in the ancient division of the 4nglish people into @uritans and Aavaliers. *see;  Nation & novel: the English novel
