From the Shepherd’s Heart From the Shepherd’s Heart From the Shepherd’s Heart From the Shepherd’s Heart Dr. Rick Byargeon Dr. Rick Byargeon Dr. Rick Byargeon Dr. Rick Byargeon It’s over. . . .at least until next August. For those of us, who are football fans, the long winter (and summer) of our discontent has begun. And it’s not just football. For the most part, our other big past time, hunting, has come to an end. For one brief period in the Spring, we can chase gobblers; but after that, we wait till September to renew the hunt. So what’s next? Soon it will be baseball and softball that will drive us to distraction, as well as driving us from town to town, looking for the championship that eluded us last year. We will spend a lot of time eating happy meals on hard bleachers, cheering on our sons and daughters. What drives us? What controls our internal clocks and external calendars? The above two paragraphs suggest it is our passions. Some of us love the camp, the woods, the duck blinds, and the thrill of the outdoors. Some of us love the competition, the closeness, and the cost of giving our children a chance to be great in a sport. In the midst of all that controls us and compels us, where is our commitment to be radical? How to we find the time and prioritize for intentional transformation? The challenge of radical will not end in four weeks. It will begin. Be intentional in your love for Christ and in your desire to change this year. On February 4, 1976, our family (Sadel, Angela-who turned one on that date, and me plus our little dog, Mitzi) moved to Ruston from Clinton, Mississippi, to begin our work at Temple Baptist Church. Jonathan came to be a part of our family in 1979. Now 35 years later, I am still here! I am grateful to God for leading me to this church and I am thankful for you folks allowing me to serve here with you for all these years. God has blessed my life through you. It has been a wonderful experience to serve our Lord with you. Thank you for all the love and support that you have given to the Oden Family for these 35 delightful years.

I want to encourage our Senior Adults to be at this month’s luncheon. It is scheduled for Thursday, February 17, at 11:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Last month, we had over 100 in attendance, and I hope that we will exceed that number next week. Our program for this month will be given by Ruston native, Reggie McLeroy. Reggie is an artist and speaker who will be an encouragement to your life. Many of you have known him through the years and know of his work with young people in the area. Some of his art work is on display right now at the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center. Please make plans to be here for the luncheon on February 17, and invite someone to come with you. Don’t forget to bring a salad, vegetable, or dessert for the meal.

Two weeks after the first announcement about a spring trip to Savannah, Georgia, in April, the bus is completely full. It amazes me how quickly you folks respond to our senior adult trips! You can get your name on the waiting list if you would like to do so.

Thanks for your continued

donations of sugar. We are

responsible for providing CCA

with 55 2-pound bags each month.

Our WEEkday Early Education ministry is now accepting

applications for 2011-2012. We offer a variety of classes to best

suit your child’s needs as well as your family’s needs. All WEEkday

classes are from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. There is a one-time,

non-refundable material fee of $65 which must be paid to hold

your child’s place for the fall. If you have not received registration

information or have other questions, please contact our director,

Angel Causey, at the WEEkday Office, 255-9506. We welcome the

opportunity to minister to your child(ren) and your family.

LOVESTRONG We are partnering with Steve and Debbie Wilson, of Marriage

Matters Now, to have them come to a local restaurant once a

month this spring and to teach on marriage. You may

remember them as the featured speakers at Fall Festival of

Marriage in Glorieta and Branson the past two years. This is

a free event! We hope you will invite some friends to come

and hear from them. Dates and more information are

coming soon. You can check out their website at

Walsworth in the Church Office for more information.

To say that 2011 has already been amazing would be an understatement. We have already seen spiritual growth in our Wednesday nights, our Sunday mornings have been challenging and encouraging, and the overall ministry has been moving more and more to what I see as a fruitful student ministry. I really want to encourage all of you to join us on the first Wednesday of each month for our SP Rivalry. SP "Student-Parent" Rivalry is something we started last year so the parents could come and see what their students are being taught, how they worship, and engage in some good clean competition. Most student ministries revolve around a student minister, but what I am trying to cultivate is that Temple student ministry is a church-wide investment. One way for our kids to see this is by them seeing you attend an Agape service, sitting with them during worship, or investing in them personally. Some activities that are coming up soon to cultivate these thoughts are: Youth Bible Drill, Advance team, DNOW and a Temple Students Focus Meeting. Continue to pray for our students who are in leadership at their schools. So far through those programs, over 80 students have accepted Christ as Savior on the school campuses.

Upward is coming to a close and has been, yet again, a great year. The 215 children, 24 teams, 2 cheer squads, and countless volunteer referees, coaches and devotional leaders have caused this program to be a blessing to our church and community. Please begin praying fervently for our Upward Banquet on February 18, this is our end of the year banquet where all of the families are invited to enjoy a meal but more importantly hear the Gospel and have the opportunity to respond. Pray that lives will be radically transformed through salvation and that those families who do not have a home church will find comfort in what God is doing at Temple.
