IntroductionEarly Spanish exploration of Florida by Ponce de León led to the founding of St. Augustine in 1565. St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States.

IntroductionIn 1585, Sir Walter Raleigh established the first English colony in America on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. Called the Lost Colony, all but fifteen settlers returned to Great Britain in 1586. By 1587, there was no one left in the colony.
