Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We

have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have doneand by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our wholeheart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserveYour present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, JesusChrist, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we maydelight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.Amen

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sakeforgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by Hisauthority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of theT Son and of the Holy Spirit. [John 20:19-23]

C Amen

OLD TESTAMENT ~ Jeremiah 20:7–13

7 O LORD, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I,and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocksme. 8 For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the wordof the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. 9 If I say, “I willnot mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were aburning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. 10 ForI hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denouncehim!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived; thenwe can overcome him and take our revenge on him.” 11 But the LORD is with me as adread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble; they will not overcome me. Theywill be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never beforgotten. 12 O LORD of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and themind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause.

13 Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD! For he has delivered the life of the needyfrom the hand of evildoers.

P This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL Psalm 145:3, 5b, 6b

P Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

On your wondrous works, I will meditate, and I will declare your greatness.

EPISTLE ~ Romans 6:12–23

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, butpresent yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, andyour members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have nodominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? Byno means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedientslaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death,or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God, that you whowere once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard ofteaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, havebecome slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms, because of yournatural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurityand to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members asslaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. 20 For when you were slaves of sin,you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 But what fruit were you getting at that timefrom the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, thefruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin isdeath, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA

HOLY GOSPEL ~ Matthew 10:5a, 21–33

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter.

5 These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, 21 “Brother will deliver brotherover to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and havethem put to death, 22 and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one whoendures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to thenext, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israelbefore the Son of Man comes.

24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It isenough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If theyhave called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign thoseof his household.

26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, orhidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and whatyou hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill thebody but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body inhell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to theground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 So everyone whoacknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is inheaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father whois in heaven.”

NICENE CREED

C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,

whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen

By grace receive my soul Stretch out Your mighty hand,That it may live forever; My deathly slumber breaking.

Within a Christian grave; And bid me to rejoiceAnd let it sleep in peace. With those who love Your name.
