Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem Commandery of London & Westminster

    7pm

  • The choir sings the Introit antiphon

    Gaudete in Domine

    Rejoice in the Lord always;

    again I say, rejoice.

    Indeed the Lord is near.

    The First Hymn

    Rejoice, the Lord is King,

    Your Lord and King adore;

    Mortals, give thanks and sing,

    And triumph evermore:

    Refrain:

Lift up your heart, lift up your

    voice;

    Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

    Jesus, the Saviour, reigns,

    The God of truth and love;

When he had purged our stains,

He took his seat above: [Refrain]

    His kingdom cannot fail;

    He rules o'er earth and heaven;

The keys of death and hell

Are to our Jesus given: [Refrain]

He sits at God's right hand

    Till all his foes submit,

    And bow to his command,

And fall beneath his feet: [Refrain]

    New English Hymnal 443

    Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

In the name of the Father, and of

the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

    All Amen

The celebrant greets us in the name of

    Christ

    The Lord be with you

    All and with thy spirit.

    The celebrant introduces the Eucharist

and invites us to confess our sins as we

    prepare for the celebration.

    All Almighty God, our

    heavenly Father, we have

    sinned against thee

    through our own fault

    in thought and word and

deed, and in what we have

    left undone.

    We are heartily sorry

and repent of all our sins.

For thy Son our Lord Jesus

    Christ’s sake,

forgive us all that is past

    and grant that we may

    serve thee in newness of

life, to the glory of thy

    name. Amen.

    The celebrant declares God’s

forgiveness in the words of the

    absolution

Kyrie Eleison (sung in Greek by the

    choir)

Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy

    Lord, have mercy.

  • The Collect

O Lord Jesus Christ, who at thy

    first coming didst send thy

    messenger to prepare thy way

before thee: grant that the ministers

and stewards of thy mysteries may

    likewise so prepare and make

ready thy way by turning the

hearts of the disobedient to the

wisdom of the just, that at thy

second coming to judge the world

we may be found an acceptable

people in thy sight; who livest and

reignest with the Father and the

Holy Spirit, one God, now and for

    ever.

    All Amen.

    THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

    Sit for the first reading

A reading from the prophet Isaiah

    (35: 1-6, 10)

The wilderness and the dry land

shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice

and blossom; like the crocus it shall

    blossom abundantly, and rejoice

with joy and singing. The glory of

Lebanon shall be given to it, the

    majesty of Carmel and Sharon.

They shall see the glory of the Lord,

the majesty of our God. Strengthen

the weak hands, and make firm the

feeble knees. Say to those who are

of a fearful heart, “Be strong, fear

not! Behold, your God will come

    with vengeance, with the

recompense of God. He will come

and save you.” Then the eyes of the

blind shall be opened, and the ears

of the deaf unstopped; then shall

the lame man leap like a hart, and

the tongue of the dumb sing for joy.

For waters shall break forth in the

    wilderness, and streams in the

desert. And the ransomed of the

Lord shall return, and come to Zion

    with singing; everlasting joy shall

be upon their heads; they shall

    obtain joy and gladness, and

sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

This is the word of the Lord

    Thanks be to God.

Psalm 146 follows the first reading and

    is sung by the choir

Praise the Lord, O my soul; while I live

will I praise the Lord: yea, as long as I

have any being, I will sing praises unto

    my God.

O put not your trust in princes, nor in

any child of man: for there is no help in

    them.

For when the breath of man goeth forth

he shall turn again to his earth: and

    then all his thoughts perish.

Blessed is he that hath the God of Jacob

for his help: and whose hope is in the

    Lord his God;

Who made heaven and earth, the sea,

and all that therein is: who keepeth his

    promise for ever;

Who helpeth them to right that suffer

    wrong: who feedeth the hungry.

The Lord looseth men out of prison: the

Lord giveth sight to the blind.

  • The Lord helpeth them that are fallen:

the Lord careth for the righteous.

The Lord careth for the strangers, he

defendeth the fatherless and widow: as

for the way of the ungodly, he turneth

    it upside down.

The Lord thy God, O Sion, shall be

King for evermore: and throughout all

    generations.

    The Second Reading

A reading from the letter of St James (5:

    7-10)

    Be patient, therefore, brethren, until

the coming of the Lord. Behold, the

farmer waits for the precious fruit

of the earth, being patient over it

until it receives the early and the

late rain. You also be patient.

    Establish your hearts, for the

coming of the Lord is at hand. Do

    not grumble, brethren, against one

another, that you may not be

    judged; behold, the Judge is

standing at the doors. As an

    example of suffering and patience,

    brethren, take the prophets who

spoke in the name of the Lord.

This is the word of the Lord.

    All Thanks be to God.

    Stand for the Gospel

    Choir: Alleluia, alleluia!

    All: Alleluia, alleluia!

Choir: The spirit of the Lord has been

    given to me.

He has sent me to bring the good news

    to the poor.

    All: Alleluia!

We remain standing to hear the gospel.

When the Gospel is announced the

reader says: The Lord be with you

    All and with thy spirit.

A reading from the Holy Gospel

according to St Matthew (11: 2-11)

All Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Now when John heard in prison

about the deeds of the Christ, he

sent word by his disciples and said

to him, “Are you he who is to

come, or shall we look for

    another?” And Jesus answered

them, “Go and tell John what you

hear and see: the blind receive their

sight and the lame walk, lepers are

cleansed and the deaf hear, and the

dead are raised up, and the poor

have good news preached to them.

And blessed is he who takes no

    offense at me.”

As they went away, Jesus began

to speak to the crowds concerning

John: “What did you go out into the

    wilderness to behold? A reed

shaken by the wind? Why then did

you go out? To see a man clothed in

    soft raiment? Behold, those who

wear soft raiment are in kings’

houses. Why then did you go out?

To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you,

and more than a prophet. This is he

of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I

send my messenger before thy face,

who shall prepare thy way before

thee.’ Truly, I say to you, among

those born of women there has

  • risen no one greater than John the

Baptist; yet he who is least in the

kingdom of heaven is greater than

    he.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Sermon – A Sermon is given. – Sit

The Nicene Creed is sung – Stand

Priest I believe in one God

All the Father almighty, maker of

heaven and earth, and of all things

visible and invisible: And in one

    Lord *Jesus Christ, the only-

begotten Son of God, begotten of

his Father before all worlds, God

of God, Light of Light, very God

of very God, begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the

Father, by whom all things were

made; who for us men and for our

    salvation came down from heaven,

and was incarnate by the Holy

Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was

made man, and was crucified also

for us under Pontius Pilate. He

suffered and was buried, and the

third day he rose again according

    to the Scriptures, and ascended

into heaven, and sitteth on the

right hand of the Father. And he

shall come again with glory to

judge both the quick and the

    dead: whose kingdom shall have

no end. And I believe in the Holy

Ghost, the Lord, the giver of life,

    who proceedeth from the Father

and the Son, who with the Father

    and the Son together *is

    worshipped and glorified, who

spake by the prophets. And I

    believe one holy catholic and

    apostolic Church. I acknowledge

one baptism for the remission of

sins. And I look for the

resurrection of the dead, and the

life of the world to come. Amen.

The prayers of Intercession are offered

At the end of each petition these

    responses may be used:

    Lord, in thy mercy

    All hear our prayer.

After the petition for the departed,

    the intercessor may say:

    Rest eternal grant unto them,

    O Lord.

    All And let light perpetual

    shine upon them.

    The celebrant offers prayers in

communion with the Saints. At the end

    we say together:

    Hail, Mary, full of grace,

    the Lord is with thee.

    Blessed art thou among women

and blessed is the fruit of thy

    womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother

of God, pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

    Amen.

    The celebrant concludes the

intercessions with a final prayer, to

    which we respond:

    Amen.

    Please sit for the notices.

  • THE LITURGY OF THE

    SACRAMENT – STAND

The peace of the Lord be always

    with you

    All and with thy spirit.

Let us offer one another a sign of

    peace.

    The Offertory Hymn,

    O Jesus, I have promised

    To serve thee to the end;

Be thou for ever near me,

    My Master and my Friend;

I shall not fear the battle

If thou art by my side,

    Nor wander from the pathway

If thou wilt be my guide.

O let me hear thee speaking

    In accents clear and still,

    Above the storms of passion,

    The murmurs of self-will;

    O speak to reassure me,

    To hasten or control;

O speak, and make me listen,

    Thou guardian of my soul.

    O Jesus, thou hast promised

    To all who follow thee,

That where thou art in glory

    There shall thy servant be;

    And Jesus, I have promised

    To serve Thee to the end;

O give me grace to follow,

    My Master and my Friend.

O let me see thy footprints,

    And in them plant mine own;

    My hope to follow duly

    Is in thy strength alone;

O guide me, call me, draw me,

    Uphold me to the end;

And then in heaven receive me,

    My Saviour and my Friend.

New English Hymnal 420 Words: John Bode (1816-1874)

The choir sings the Offertory antiphon

    Benedixisti Domine

You have blessed, O Lord, your land; you

have brought back the captives of Jacob.

You have forgiven the guilt of your people.

    The Preparation of the Gifts

    – Stand

    Pray my brothers and sisters

that our sacrifice may be acceptable

    to God the almighty Father.

All May the Lord accept the

    sacrifice at thy hands,

for the praise and glory of

his name, for our good and

for the good of all his holy

    Church.

    Prayer over the Gifts:

Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord:

that the continual oblation of this

our bounden duty and service, may

evermore avail for the fulfilment of

    the institution of thine ordinance

and for the accomplishment in us

of the wondrous work of thy

    salvation; through Jesus Christ our

    Lord.

  • All: Amen.

    The Eucharistic Prayer

    The Lord be with you

    All and with thy spirit.

    Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them up unto the

    Lord.

Let us give thanks unto the

    Lord our God.

All It is meet and right so to do.

The celebrant says the preface of the

prayer, which praises God for his

mighty acts. At the end of the preface

the Sanctus is sung in Latin by the

    choir:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts,

heaven and earth are full of thy glory.

Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.

Blessed is he that cometh in the name

of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The celebrant now recalls the Last

Supper and calls the Holy Spirit to

come upon the gifts of bread and wine

that they may become for us the body

    and blood of Christ.

    The celebrant introduces this

    acclamation:

Great is the mystery of faith

    All Christ has died; Christ is risen;

    Christ will come again.

At the end of the prayer: Amen.

    The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our

    Saviour has taught us.

All Our Father, who art in

    heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come; thy will be

done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

    And forgive us our trespasses

    as we forgive those

    who trespass against us,

And lead us not into temptation

    but deliver us from evil,

    For thine is the kingdom,

    the power and the glory

    for ever and ever. Amen.

    Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the

    body of Christ.

    All Though we are many,

    we are one body, because

we all share in one bread.

Agnus Dei is sung in Latin by the

    choir.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the

sins of the world, have mercy upon us.

    (grant us thy peace).

    INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Jesus is the Lamb of God

who takes away the sins of the

world. Blessed are those who are

    called to his supper.

All Lord, I am not worthy that

    thou shouldest come

    under my roof, but speak

the word only and my soul

    shall be healed.

  • The celebrant and people receive holy

communion. As the host or chalice is

    given the minister says,

    The body of Christ

    The blood of Christ

to which we say Amen before we

    receive.

    Communicant members of other

    Christian churches are welcome to

    receive communion here. Non-

    communicants are warmly invited to

    the altar for a blessing.

    Anthem:

    Stand for the Post-Communion

    Prayer

We give thanks, O Lord, for these

they heavenly gifts; kindle in us the

fire of thy Spirit that when our

Saviour Christ shall come again we

    may shine as lights before his face;

who liveth and reigneth now and

    for ever.

    All: Amen.

    THE BLESSING

The Lord be with you All And with thy spirit

The priest gives the blessing with the

    final words being:

And the blessing of God Almighty,

the Father, the Son and the Holy

Spirit, be upon you and remain

    with you always.

    All Amen

Go in the peace of Christ

    All Thanks be to God.

    ALMA REDEMPTORIS MATER –

Is sung by the choir to a setting by

    Giovanni da Palestrina (c.1525-1594):

    Alma Redemptoris Mater, quæ pervia

    cæli

Porta manes, et stella maris, succurre

    cadenti,

Surgere qui curat populo: tu quæ

    genuisti,

    Natura mirante, tuum sanctum

    Genitorem

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab

    ore

    Sumens illud Ave, peccatorum

    miserere.

Mother of Christ! Hear thou thy

    people's cry,

Star of the deep, and portal of the sky!

Mother of Him Who thee from nothing

    made,

Sinking we strive and call to thee for

    aid;

Oh, by that joy which Gabriel brought

    to thee,

Thou Virgin first and last, thy mercy

    see.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

All That we may be worthy of

    the promises of Christ.

    Almighty, everlasting God, who by

the co-operation of the Holy Spirit,

didst prepare the body and soul of

  • the glorious Virgin Mary to become

a dwelling meet for thy Son: grant

that, as we rejoice in her

    commemoration, so by her gracious

    intercession we may be delivered

    from present evils and from

    everlasting death. Through Jesus

    Christ our Lord.

    All Amen.

The final hymn is sung (Tune: 128ii)

Lift up your heads, ye mighty

    gates,

    Behold the King of glory waits;

The King of kings is drawing near,

    The Saviour of the world is here;

Oh blest the land, the city blest,

Where Christ the ruler is confessed!

Oh happy hearts and happy homes

To whom this king in triumph

    comes!

Come then, O Saviour, and abide,

    Our hearts to thee be open wide;

May all thy inward presence feel,

To all thy grace and love reveal.

Lunch of the Community of Sant’Egidio, a lay community of members in more

than 73 countries of the world who believe in fostering prayer, peace and

    encounters with the poor.

This year, our meal will be blessed in a particular way here in London, as it will

take place for the first time in our beloved church of St. Cuthbert.

For 37 years Sant’Egidio has invited many homeless people, lonely elderly, men

and women who have nobody to spend Christmas with, to come together and

    share a beautiful meal.

We believe that nobody should be alone for Christmas: so, we want to offer

each guest - or better each friend - a Christmas gift. We come to you and ask for

your generosity. At the back of the church you will find a Giving Tree

decorated with little cards. We ask you to pick a card, buy the item written on

the card, and bring it back underneath the tree in the church by 20th December.

Please note that only new, unwrapped items will be accepted.

Thank you for your generosity and please get in touch if you’d like to help.

We wish you all a beautiful and blessed Advent.

With many thanks to those who helped put up and

    decorate our Christmas trees and the crib;

and for all those who helped and took part in the

    Community Carol Service
