THIRD DEGREE Published By

W e close out our fourth year since the revitalization of our alumni association, and the reestablishment of the Eta Chapter at the University of Maryland, with the eighth issue of our award-winning newsletter...er, magazine,

“The THIRD DEGREE.” Frankly, I never thought that we would kill so very many trees on our way to sharing with you all the news about the chapter and our alumni association. We close out our fourth year with a new record in membership - 334 alumni Brothers of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa are reading this very same issue - as are our active members, their parents, and the members of an exclusive “complimentary” subscription list that includes University of Maryland President Wallace Loh. Not too shabby. We close out our fourth year with additional generous donations to our capital campaign, “Six Columns,” and we are able to boast that our Homecoming and Open House events have all been well-attended. In this, our 8th issue, we hope to excite you about what we have accomplished this past year and what we have planned for the coming year. As we enter our 5th year, I hope that I can count on you to help us reach new heights. As you know, now is the time to renew your membership. If there is a Membership Renewal sheet attached to your copy of this issue, I need you to take a moment - just a moment - and please be generous as you renew your membership. Please don’t wait. And please don’t put this aside. I really want to be able to send you the next issue of our magazine. Please do the right thing - and, of course, enjoy the read.

Damn Proud,

New Heights.

New-ish Video Inspired by the PlayStation 4 Perfect Day Commercial http://youtu.be/s0d9d-cdxhk your Eta Alumni Association came up with a “unique” way to encourage attendance at the 2014 Open House. If you have not already seen it, take a look: http://youtu.be/kbxvHwcvXVQ

Only One Left We were really pleased to see the issues of The Frieze were scanned and put up online for all to enjoy (see “Eta Online, this issue), With the help of Anne Turkos, University Archivist, we obtained a high-res copy of the 1973 Composite and added it to the Eta Alumni Photo Vault. The only composite photo we are missing from the period 1952 to present is the 1954 Composite. If you have a copy, please let us know!

Transitions “HouseMom” Katherine Kipp, having obtained her second (yes, second) Masters degree, has fulfilled her obligations to the University of Maryland and moves on to greener pastures (and paying taxes and saving for retirement). We wish Katherine all the very best in her future and thank her sincerely for spoiling the beejeezus out of us. The shoes she leaves behind will be hard to fill, and later in this issue we’ll get her take on her upcoming departure from #2 Fraternity Row.

A “Baker’s Dozen” of New Eta Alumni

What’s that you say? There is no photo of our new alumni? Just an image of a graduation cap? Huh. That’s strange, be-cause we’re sure we asked for a photo. Geez. Um, we dunno what to say. Well, maybe by the time the next issue comes out we’ll have that photo for you. Wow, this is embarrassing...I mean, where could it be? We...

online “The THIRD DEGREE” CITED ON WIKIPEDIA It gives us great pleasure to see that content from our award-winning magazine, “The THIRD DEGREE” has been cited in the Wikipedia entry for Major German Horton Hunt Emory (Class of 1903). Rufus S. Lusk III, a distant relation of Brother Emory, undertook the exhaustive process of preparing the Wikipedia entry and called on the Eta Alumni Association for assistance, which we gladly provided. Emory was the subject of an article in the second (Winter 2010) issue of our magazine entitled “The One We Lost.” That article, which fetched us a Silver Award for Best Feature Writing and a Gold Award in Magazine Copywriting in the 17th Annual Communicator Awards, along with all of our back issues can be found and read online at http://alumni.psk-eta.com/ttd/ and, through the wonders of the internet, you can read the entire Wikipedia entry, and learn all there is to know about the life of Brother Emory, when you visit http://tinyurl.com/eta-hunt

Page 9: The THIRD DEGREE - Summer 2014

T he Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa has been very busy this past semester and there was never a dull moment. We have improved in several aspects of fraternity

including athletics, alumni relations, academics, community service, Greek relations, and philan-thropy. The brothers of the Eta Chapter have shown everyone that we have a lot that makes us Damn Proud. Upon entering my Presidency one of my top priori-ties was strengthening the actives relationship with the Eta Alumni Association which has contributed so much to our chapter. We started off the Fall se-mester with the Alumni Homecoming Reception along with the Alumni Homecoming Tailgate that was hosted by the Eta Alumni Association. In the Spring we decided to take it up a notch; we put together a “Meet the Seniors” event at RJ Bent-ley’s so that the Alumni and the Seniors who will soon join the Alumni can get more acquainted and understand the opportunities from the fraternity post

-graduation. Secondly, the active chapter decided that we wanted to make this year’s Alumni Open House the best one yet. The brotherhood worked hard to make sure that the Chapter house was pre-pared and in good shape, and also came out in force to meet and greet the alumni, share stories, and give house tours. Everything worked out well and the chapter is very proud to have the best alumni base at the University of Maryland and will continue to show our appreciation for their support in the up-coming Fall semester. The brotherhood has also continued to show its dedication to recruitment and our desire to grow our fraternity which is why we able to initiate 17 new members in the Spring and raise our total member-ship to 74 brothers. Our scholarship has also seen a rise from the Spring of 2013 to the Fall of 2014. The Chapter’s overall GPA rose .19 points from a 2.93 to a 3.12, earning our chapter the IFC Most Im-proved GPA Award. We were also Damn Proud to see our brother Noah Mandell receive the University

Eta Chapter President Dan Tatum (right) introduces a few friends to one of several puppies that were featured in the fraternity’s charity event, “PSKanines,” held on Fraternity Row on May 8th. The event, organized by Eta Brothers Alex Raul, Joshua Bernstein, and Frank Hackenburg, and co-sponsored by the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi, Kappa Delta and Sigma Kappa as well as the brothers of Sigma Chi and Theta Chi, had a great turn out from the community and raised approximately $750 for an animal shelter.

Medal at graduation for his outstanding academics. This award is the highest an undergraduate can re-ceive from the University. The Chapter also sought to demonstrate its character by improving its com-munity service outreach to the Special Olympics, American Red Cross, and local charity organiza-tions. Overall the chapter had 500+ hours of com-munity service. The main events undertaken by the chapter included a blood drive, a Special Olympics’ Basketball tournament and SOMD’s “Freeze Your Buns Off 5k”. These have definitely been big steps in the right direction and encourage all members to promote the founding values of Phi Sigma Kappa. Not only have we tried to make the chapter stronger internally, but we also focused much of our atten-tion to promoting ourselves in the Greek community and building the good name of Phi Sigma Kappa. There was tremendous success in our fraternity’s athletic endeavors as Brothers Madsen, Lopez, Trainor, Mountain, and Ayken led our 4-on-4 flag football team to a Fraternity A league championship when they dominated Lamda Chi in the final game. The Eta Chapter hosted a new philanthropy event called PSKannines which helped support the local animal shelter. PSKannines had a great turn out from the community as everyone had fun and raised approximately $750 for an animal shelter. We also supported other Greek organizations in their philan-thropic events. The chapter participated in events such as Alpha Chi Omega (AXO) and Sigma Nu’s SigNu de Mayo, AXO and Kappa Alpha Theta’s

Run for Love, Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash, Delta Phi Epsilon’s ANAD Fashion Show, and lastly Tau Kappa Epsilon and Alpha Phi’s Mr. Greek. Greek Week was also a lot of fun this year with the overall Made in America theme and our matchup theme of West Virginia. Greek Week was a good way to build relationships in the Greek community as the brothers became friendly with our matchup consist-ing of Zeta Tau Alpha and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Finally, the Eta Chapter is sorry to say good bye to the last of the founding fathers and see more seniors graduate and join the Third Degree. We wish them the best of luck as they join the rest of the world and want them to know that they will always have a family of Brothers waiting for them back in College Park whenever they come to visit. Our Chapter is looking forward to a bright and productive next se-mester. We have goals to continue improving our alumni relations, keep up our good work in giving back to the community, revamp our new member education process, and exceed previous expectations for recruitment by associating at least ten new mem-bers in the Fall. Damn Proud!

- Matt Ellentuck , Public Relations Chair The brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa raised money for local animal shelters by hosting an event, “PSKanines” on Fraternity Row May 8. Joshua Bern-stein, Frank Hackenburg and Alex Raul organized the event. For three dollars anyone was permitted to play with the dogs brought in by the shelters and some of the brothers, enjoy some Rita’s Italian ices, play corn hole and grab some free gifts from Vineyard Vines. The Huskies, Beagles and Terriers braved the 84-degree heat and attracted many University of Mary-land students on the field at Fraternity Row. Along with Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, Southern Proper, Doggy Style Bakery, the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi, Kappa Delta and Sigma Kappa as well as the brothers of Sigma Chi and Theta Chi cosponsored the event.

Noah Mandell ’14 was named University Medalist, an award that recognizes the graduating senior who “best represents academic distinction, exemplary character and service to the campus or public communities.”

As well as holding positions as a treasurer and scholarship chair for Phi Sigma Kappa, Mandell also played alto saxophone for the Jazz Lab band while earning a bachelor’s degree in physics and a minor in math. Mandell led Phi Sigma Kappa to the most improved GPA of all fraternities with a 3.98.

In the classroom and lab he spent a lot of time with executive director of Maryland’s Honors College and Physics Professor William Dorland. “Noah is the brightest, most highly motivated undergraduate I have ever worked with, and I have worked directly with many,” Dorland said. In fact, a visiting scholar believed Mandell was a second-year graduate student rather than the second-year undergraduate he was. He has received many additional awards, most notably being named a Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar and a Goldwater Scholar.

“[At the University of Maryland] I had a good time, I did some good work. The relationships I’ve made are really special,” Mandell said. He will be attending Princeton University’s Plasma Physics Laboratory for his graduate studies in astrophysical sciences in the fall.

By Michael Carey Executive Vice President Phi Sigma Kappa

When I heard that Paul Hazan ‘17, an engineering major from St. Louis, Missouri, had been initiated into the Eta Chapter, my thoughts immedi-ately turned to a very special Phi Sig that I have known, and Brother Hazan’s Grandfather, Brother George Duarte of the Zeta Chapter (City College of New York). George Duarte truly lived the motto “Fraternity for Life” and he loved Phi Sigma Kappa, his family, and especially his grandson. Brother Duarte did a great job keeping the Zeta Chapter together, and he had a great impact on me in my position as Executive Vice President. And I was privileged to be present, with Grand President Todd Simpson, when George received from the Zeta Chapter an Outstanding Member Award. Although George has passed away, I pray he will someday welcome me on the other side with a ice cold beverage and another great story of what he has been up to. In the meantime, I will be interested to learn what his grandson does to distinguish himself within the Eta Chapter. Damn Proud !

"There's a party goin' on right here, A celebration to last throughout the years. So bring your good times and your laughter too. We gonna celebrate your party with you.

Come on now, celebration! Let's all celebrate and have a good time. Celebration! We gonna celebrate and have a good time.

It's time to come together. It's up to you, what's your pleasure? Everyone around the world, come on!" Thirty-four years ago, 'Kool and the Gang' released their chart-topping album "Celebrate." The lyrics of the number one song from that album, 'Celebration', certainly fit the Eta Open House of 2014. It was March 12, 2011 when th Eta Chapter celebrated its Re-Charter and return among the elite fraternities at the University of Maryland. So it was very appropriate that, three years later, the active Brothers, Alumni, Parents and Friends gathered, on April 26th, to celebrate the Chapter's third annual Open House. The Eta Chapter Open House is held in conjunction with the University's annual, campus wide, open house known as MARYLAND DAY,

which drew over 100,000 visitors to the university. While our Open House attendance was not quite that high, it's attendance was in the hundreds and included alumni from many decades (1950’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s & the 2010’s) and from throughout the country, from Florida to Massachu-setts, from Texas to Minnesota, and from Califor-nia to Pennsylvania.

The annual Open House is the Chap-ter's chance to 'Show Case' their House not only to Alumni, but to their parents. As in prior years, many Parents of Active Brothers took this opportunity to come to the House, meet their son's Brothers, learn of Phi Sig's rich history from the Alumni and see the living conditions within the House. As always the Chapter grasped this opportunity and put their best foot forward.

What a Celebration! Brothers Allen Kogut '75, Phil Catania '75 and Tony Cina '73 reunite at Open House '14.

Page 17: The THIRD DEGREE - Summer 2014

As the mother of a newly initiated Brother said; "When my son said he wanted to join a fraternity, I was worried. When he said he wanted to live in the Fraternity House, I thought, "No way". All I could envision was the movie 'Animal House'. But after seeing the House and talking to the members and Alumni, I can see why he wants to live here. This House is great." A week after Open House, that mother mailed in her son's Housing Contract to live in the House next Fall. The Open House featured an hors d'oeuvre buffet of wings, shrimp, subs and sweets. Actives and siblings played cornhole on the side yard, even a few Alumni joined in tossing the bags. Alumni who had not seen each other in several decades re-united, introduced family and swapped stories. One of the true val-ues of Open House, is seeing the Alumni and Actives interact. The Alumni get to see the fine men who are now maintaining the Phi Sig tra-dition and the Actives get to know their history and the true meaning of "Brother for Life". Presentations culminated the Open House event. First, this years honorees for election into the Eta Hall of Fame were: Walter E. Laake, Jr. ‘65, Todd B. Hoffman ‘82, Patrick L. McGeough ‘85,

H. Christopher Malone ‘86, Jay Gobeil ‘12, and Ryan Kief ‘12. We congratulate them all, and thank them for their service to the fraternity. Then, Terry Chapman '62, presented a special award to Joe Criscuoli, President of the Eta Alumni Asso-

ciation, for his service to the Chapter and his exemplification of brother-hood. The award was an original fishing fly, specifically tied and framed by Terry himself. "..It's time to come together, It's up to you, what's your pleasure?.."

We did 'come together'. Over 20 Brothers, alumni from the 1950’s & 1960’s joined us for the Open House. Additionally the alumni from the 50’s and 60’s and their wives gath-ered the evening before for a reun-ion, organized by Wayne H. Bethards '59, at the Commons Res-taurant in the UMUC Marriott. Sat-urday they toured the campus and

participated in the MARYLAND DAY events, gath-ered for lunch at Ledo's Restaurant, attended the Open House and then topped off the event by cele-brating with drinks, dinner and stories back at the Commons. Members of the Chapter's Executive Board and members from the Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association were able to join them Saturday night. The interaction between the Alumni of the 50s and the Actives was educational and entertaining for all. The Alumni learned of the differences in student lifestyle and studies now com-pared with when they attended the University. The Alumni provided the Actives with many ideas that they plan to incorporate into the Chapter's practices, such as; establishing a scholarship program, brother-hood award programs and even ideas on how to throw a good party. Clearly, throwing a good party is timeless. "There's a party goin' on right here. A celebration to last throughout the years"

Not to be outdone, the Alumni, from the 1970’s and 1980’s gathered together for a reunion Saturday evening after the Open House at the Cornerstone Loft or, as the 'old guys' would remember it, the

easily enthralled with anecdotes of the classic stunts we used to get away with back in the 80’s. Although retelling some of our old stories may be satisfying, I

had even more fun hearing about some of the things that they're

up to now. Damn Proud,”

'Vous. The reunion was hosted and organized by Jim Allen '77, Stephen Cooper '79 and Todd Hoff-man '82. The Alumni enjoyed good food, great mu-sic (all from the 70’s & 80’s) and terrific company. As with the gathering of the Alumni from the 50’s and 60’s, the Alumni were joined by several of our recent Alumni (2011-2013) and some of the upper classman Active Brothers.

While the 70’s and 80’s Alumni may not have passed on constructive advice and ideas to the Ac-tives, as did the Alumni from the 50s & 60s, they still exposed the active members to things they did not know, like: How not to keep the 'Bull' from pil-ing up in front of the House, What to do with the Chapter House during a demonstration (the Viet-nam War protests) and several old (new to the ac-tives) Phi Sig Songs, whose lyrics cannot be re-printed here (This is a family publication). The re-union was so successful at reuniting the ties of the 70’s and 80’s Alumni Brothers, and establishing ties with our Chapter's recent Alumni, that talk was heard of making this an annual event. So mark your calendar now for April 25, 2015. "It's up to you, what's your pleasure? Everyone around the world come on!"

So, ".. What's your pleasure?..". If it was not to have the weekend end, you were in luck. On Sun-day, April 27th, as part of the University's celebra-tion of 100 years of Greek Life at Maryland, the University Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life held a very large ceremony on Fraternity Row. The Ceremony honored Greek Alumni who gave exemplary service to their Fraternity and to the

University by inducting them into the University's Greek Centennial Hall of Fame. Each inductee was presented with an engraved brick, featuring their name and their fraternity's name. Each Fraternity and Sorority were permitted to induct members based on the length of time their chapter operated at the University. Eta Chapter was privileged to be able to induct nine honorees: Edgar Farr Russell '22, J. Phillip Schaefer '23, James E. Starnes '54, Charles E. Wickard '56, John W. Dorsey '58, Robert Yel-lowlees '60, Philip R. Rever '63, Christopher P. McBeth '02 and Jay Gobeil '12. The engraved Bricks are placed in the Greek Centennial Garden, recently dedicated at the top of Fraternity Row. Eta Chapter congratulates all our honorees. And we thank all our Alumni, whose support and Brother-hood, made their accomplishments possible.

“"Returning to the Phi Sig house after such a long time (even though it wasn't #7), felt like I had

returned home. A house is just that: a house. What made # 7 a home for me all those years ago was

sharing that home with all my Brothers. Seeing some of their faces at the reunion in the

new house brought back a flood of feel-good memories. The stories we told have only gotten

better over the years! The new house looks great. The young Phi Sigs look like great "kids" who will

do us old farts proud. They are making their house a home just like we did so many years ago. Will

see everyone next year. Damn proud!" Phil Catania '75

Reunion. David Henry, Eric Vinson, Jeff Odom, and Sorin Schwartz at the 70’s-80’s Reunion at the Cornerstone Loft;

“The decision made by the Eta Alumni Association to hold an annual Open House at #2 Fraternity Row in conjunction with the University’s Maryland Day each April has resonated with alumni and actives alike. The Open House held over the week-end of April 25-27 was the most successful yet with well over one hundred alumni, parents, actives, University officials and guests attending. The very impressive Phi Sig house was a hub of activity, energy and conversation. Aside from the house itself, the display of composites going back to the early 1950’s and the amazing wall-size Eta family tree poster received a lot of attention. 1950’s &1960’s and 1970’s &1980’s alumni promoted reunions in conjunction with the planned Maryland Day and Phi Sig Open House events. Thirty-nine 50’s/60’s alumni and guests gathered at the on-campus College Park Marriott Hotel and Conference Center on Friday and Saturday evenings for reception and dinner. Thirty-seven 70’s/80’s alumni met at RJ Bentley’s on Friday evening and the Cornerstone Grill on Saturday evening. All alumni and guests enjoyed the terrific Eta Open House from 1 to 5 pm on Saturday. Twenty-one 50’s/60’s alumni and guests stayed at the Marriott; and many took advantage of the beautiful Saturday weather to walk and take in the Maryland Day exhibits on the way to Ledo’s, where eighteen enjoyed a group lunch. From Ledo’s it was a short walk to the Phi Sig house. Some even attended the Maryland soccer game. On Sunday morning many met for breakfast at the Marriott to wrap up the weekend. One sentiment heard was to wonder why all the fraternities don’t hold open houses on Maryland Day because it is such a great thing to do. Phi Sig is doing it best!”

Trusted Advisor. Brother Allen Kogut '75, a former Chapter Adviser, talks with active Brothers Dan Straus and Eli Bergman.

“A moment in time was revisited when I joined fellow alumni, active's parents and my active brothers at

the Phi Sigma Kappa house on Fraternity Row, April 26, 2014 for a day of fun and the University of

Maryland's annual Open House. The house was ablaze with smiling faces of parents and alumni over

what the young brothers and John Wright, alumni house chairman, had done with the house and their

effort in the resurgence of Phi Sigma Kappa on campus. The house was more fitting for a group

of young college students, with a living room comfortable enough for actives to join together

for recreation and brotherhood.

The first Phi Sig house, at #7 Fraternity Row, lost the space to a formal motif, often misused and abused, as with building part of a Homecoming float there. The actives have provided tribute to their aging brothers by dedicating wall space to remember that they, too, are part of this great

fraternity. A chart of big and little brothers on one wall expands to cover decades of brotherhood.

Composites of brothers through the years festoon the walls that says these brothers were part of it all.

I was proud to see how these young brothers have brought us back on campus with aplomb and pride. Pride in themselves, their university, their fraternity

and those of us, who are proud to call them our brothers. I know all alumni are very proud of these fine young brothers and wish them the

best for the future. Damn Proud!!”

“Recently my wife Margaret and I attended a Phi Sigma Kappa Open House Event on Fraternity Row at the

University of Maryland and we enjoyed it very much! The entire campus was beautifully showcased for Maryland Day in the clear, early spring weather and the mood was uplifting. With the warm sun shining

brightly we were warmly greeted by an active on the front porch of Phi Sigma Kappa, #2 Fraternity Row, and given name tags and a good handshake. We enjoyed refreshments and mixed into an already interactive setting of actives, other students and their friends, parents, relatives, and Phi Sig alumni

happy to be once again on Fraternity Row.

The house is in good condition and had been groomed wonderfully for the occasion. As we walked through the living room, we enjoyed seeing the Eta chapter photo composites there and in other rooms of the house

and also trophies won by the brothers in golf and other sports. A pool table with Phi Sigma Kappa “tumbling T’s” adorned another room and for me would be a difficult diversion to resist in the evenings. The furniture is attractive and functional and the dining room downstairs offers many comforts unknown to us actives in the 1960’s, like the soft drink dispenser! There is a study room with appropriately sturdy

chairs around an amply sized table that would encourage serious study.

Recorded music was creating a nice atmosphere in the front yard and a game somewhat like horseshoes was being played, whereby you threw sand bags into a hole in a slanted board colored with the colors of the

Maryland State flag—just challenging enough to be fun. Age was no barrier at the Phi Sig house that day--I won a game with Victor Alonso, a recent graduate and Phi Sig alumni. A pickup basketball game was underway in the house’s side yard as everyone chatted and enjoyed a light lunch provided by the

chapter. Sunny weather in the 70’s just made it even better. Phi Sigma Kappa shone that day too!

New Phi Sigma Kappa Hall of Fame members were announced and Joseph Criscuoli received an original framed trout fly that I prepared, commemorating Joe’s contributions in bringing Eta chapter back to the University of Maryland. The applause for Joe was enthusiastic and the assembled folks then continued to mix and enjoy Eta’s hospitality and revel in our regained place on campus. As we walked down the

front steps at the end of the program to leave, I turned around and beamed with pride for my brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa and all the future adventures to be lived and accomplishments yet to be achieved.”

Terry H. Chapman ‘62

“The Alumni Association did its usual fantastic job in organizing and implementing the Spring Open House.

Joe Criscuoli tended to every small detail in welcoming back alumni from over six decades of brothers. Those who attended not only had an opportunity to see old friends, but to enjoy an entire weekend of

celebration at the University of Maryland.

And, if you haven't been back to campus to see the "new" Phi Sig mansion, you really must do so. John Wright has provided the men with a wonderful living experience. Those of you who have lived

in "the house" at some time since 1952 will be amazed at how beautiful, elaborately furnished, and well-kept the new facility is.

The Alumni Association and House Corporation have done an amazing job in serving both the alumni

and the undergraduates. If you haven't already stepped up to help them - DO SO NOW!!!”

Greek Centennial Alumni Honor Roll

On Sunday, April 27, University of Maryland President Wallace Loh and Vice President Linda Clement honored past and present leaders of the Greek System at Maryland at the Centennial Alumni Honor Roll Reception at the east end of Fraternity Row. The purpose of the Centennial Honor Roll was to honor the outstanding University of Maryland frater-nity and sorority members over the last 100 years, not including anyone who is currently an undergraduate student. Selection guidelines were to honor members who have made great contributions to the Maryland chapter, the University of Maryland Fraternity and Sorority Life community, elevated Fraternity and Sorority Life on a chapter or community level; or any combi-nation of these areas of achievement. Under a formula that based the number of honorees from each chapter on the number of years that organization has had a chapter at the University of Maryland College Park, the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa was allowed nine honorees. The Eta Chapter has existed at College Park from 1923-2002 (79 years) and 2010-present (4 years) for a total of 83 years. Phi Sigma Kappa’s 26 years at the University of Maryland-Baltimore (1897-1923) did not count.

It is with Great Pride that we introduce Phi Sigma Kappa’s honorees:

Eta Chapter Hall of Fame

Each year, the Eta Chapter, in consultation with the Eta Alumni Association, has an opportunity to add to the distinguished list of Eta Alumni selected to be honored for all time as members of the Eta Chapter Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to the New Inductees:

Walter E. Laake, Jr., Esq. Class of 1965 Todd B. Hoffman Class of 1982 Patrick L. McGeough Class of 1985 H. Christopher Malone Class of 1986 Jay Gobeil Class of 2012 Ryan Kief Class of 2012

Formal presentations to the inductees will be made as part of our Homecoming festivities this coming October. In our last issue you met "Eta Terp," better know as "ET" (Spielberg is always copying us), the official mascot of the Eta Alumni Association. "ET" is on a mission, in this, the 5th year of the Eta Alumni Association, to travel the nation and meet all the distinguished Eta Alumni and see what interesting activities in which they are engaging. So, next time you travel or are involved in some interesting activity, take "ET" along and send us a picture. We will publish all pictures in the next issue so all the Eta Alumni can appreciate where our members are travelling.

Alumni Notes “Damn Proud” On June 10, 2014, the Prince George’s County (Maryland) Bar Association honored Brother Walter E. Laake, Esq. ‘65 when they bestowed upon him the Judge James H. Taylor Award for his outstanding contributions to the bar association and to the community. The annual award was created by Judge Nicholas E. Rattal, Associate Judge, Prince George's County Circuit Court, 7th Judicial Circuit, and his Board of Directors, in 2011 and named after Judge Taylor for his outstanding leadership. The award was presented to Brother Laake at the annual meeting of the association, during which Brother Laake was thanked “for setting an example in the profes-sion and for inspiring all of us with his commitment to the com-munity.” “Golf, Boating, and Fishing” Dennis W. Sirman ‘67, a new member of the association, writes: “After graduation from Maryland in 1967, I taught physical education, coached a variety of sports, became an athletic director and then an assistant principal in the Baltimore County Public School System. In 1977, I received a Masters Degree in Education Administration from the Univer-sity of Utah which I attended on sabbatical (the skiing was awe-some and I met my wife out there, ironically a Baltimore native). I retired, after 38 years,

in 2005. I was married 27 years (now divorced) and have four children -- Brian, 34; Rebecca, 32; Kevin, 30 and Caitlin, 24. I also have two grandchildren -- Hallie, 4 and Bennett, 2 months. My wife, kids and I resided in Carroll County, Maryland until I retired. I then moved to West Fenwick Island, Delaware where I now reside with my loveable 12 year old female yellow Lab, Abby. I still follow the Terps and, along with several friends, have season tickets to football games. A part time job with West Marine gives me golf money and good discounts on boat and fishing supplies. Thus golf, boating and fishing are among my hobbies. Other interests include military history and collecting and shoot-ing firearms. I also enjoy sharing a variety of social and political BS via email with friends, taking very few things seriously.” Making a List Claude A. Bogley ‘70, is putting together a listing of Eta Brothers who served our country in the armed forces. So far he has: “Jim Comi (USAF), Nelson Kimmey (US Army), Jim Kirlin (Uncle Sam's Misguided Children), Cecil Given (USMC), John Matthews, (US Army), Charles Trayers (USN), Gerald Haser (USN), Harvey Gannon (USN), William Furber (USMC), Rick Anderson, (USMC), James Hyatt (US Army) John Silva (US Army), Claude Bogley (USN), William Brewster (US Army), Greg Man-

gum (US Army), George Braley (USAF), Dave Crowley was also (USMC), Robert Reppa (USMC), Omar James Jones III (US Army), David Michaud (USMC), Steve Ludwig (USMC), Charles Yount (U.S. Army), and James D. Reese (USMC). Whatever your service, whatever the tenure, we thank you for it and encourage you to write in and help us to compile a more complete listing. Damn Proud! Blaker’s World Nathan Blaker ‘11 writes, “College is amazing. It's wonder-ful. If you don't agree, you aren't doing it right and you need a swift kick in the ass. But life after college is amazing and wonderful in different ways. I remember thinking that when I graduated, things would be more straightfor-ward, that I would do my man-agement training program, move to the next position, and take over the company one step at a time. I know that sounds a little ladder climbing cliche, but there it is. So I started my job, did everything that was expected of me (I would say) and was ready for the next one, or at least needed to get off that step. All I really needed to do was keep it up for a few months, keep my network strong, and I'd have hit the next rung on the lad-der. But I got itchy. All those sto-ries and experiences you hear about in college start to catch up to you. "What if..." Started to be a bigger part of my day then the "I need to..." part. This was pretty

stressful. I talked to my boss about it, I talked to my fraternity brothers, I talked to my family, and I got a lot of great advice, all of which I already knew and none of which helped me make my de-cision. In the end I followed my gut. I quit my job and started helping my friend launch a pho-tography company, which I knew nothing about and honestly had little interest in, except it would let me be my own boss and I would have the chance to build something again. (The first one was Eta. I like to think that turned out all right.) As I expected, I didn't really take to photography. Not one to live in the past, I like to look forward. Plus I'd rather be in front of a camera then behind it. So I kept my ear to the ground and had a friend that owned a restaurant and needed someone he could trust to come be the general manager. Again, no restaurant experience whatsoever but we gave it a shot. In the end, it was too far in the hole already and we had to shut it down. Sad for some, but for the owner (and me) it was the right thing. It's funny, often you look at a fork in the road and see two options. And then a hidden door in a tree opens up and a tiny gnome says "Come with me if you want to live!" Well I didn't really see a gnome and I don't think my life was ever in danger, but the point is the unexpected will happen. And it happened to me because I stay positive, I seek out conversa-tion, and when I visit people I clean up after myself. Also be-

cause my brother-in-laws friend was looking for a sales person. BUT he never would have recom-mended me if I hadn't done the other three things. So the next time you stay at your older sisters place, or your aunts, or a friend of a friend, fold the blankets. Put the pillow back. And damnit, do the dishes when no one expects it. So I got an interview, and then the next one, and then after round three I found myself packing up a truck and driving from Virginia to San Francisco to start in a new industry/job/life. The first week was amazing and frustrating- my house wasn't ready, so I slept on a high school friend’s couch for a week. Super random, never ever underestimate how the people in your life will come back later and be a big part of your journey. That was the end of February 2014, I've been in my job for a month and a half and when I look at life now, versus a year ago, I know the last year of my life hap-pened so I could be here doing what I'm doing. Which I know is only so the next step can be even better. Or at least pleasantly dif-ferent. Today I'm a Publisher Develop-ment Associate at iSocket, an ad tech company automating the di-rect buying and selling of re-served, fixed price online adver-tising inventory. Two months ago I would have heard that and said “Excuse me?” A year ago I was a sales manager at Macy’s helping sales people put together outfits for customers and discussing ex-pectations.

To my brothers out there let me know how your journey is going. Call me. LinkedIn me. Text me funny pictures and jokes. If you need advice, a confidential non-judgemental ear, I'm your man. Brand new associate at Mary-land? Hit me up. Older then my grand uncle? Send me a smoke signal. I'm at long short short long. I've got nothing but love for you all, and I wish you and your people suc-cess and happiness.

Dick was born on October 10, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the only child of the late Ralph Wieland and Margaret Metz Wieland. While in college Dick was active in ROTC and entered the US Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant after graduation. While on active duty, he was stationed at five bases in Texas and Okinawa during the Korean War. After seven years of service, he went to Washington, D.C. to attend Georgetown University Law School. He then returned to Houston where he served as the first law clerk of Federal District Judge James Noel, after which he was hired as one of the first two attorneys at NASA's Johnson Space Center. October 23, 1995 – February 28, 2014 Suddenly, and without warning, a year that seemed so very filled with promise has turned oh, so filled with pain and sadness. The news was, as it usually is, conveyed by a telephone call late in the night. And that is how I learned on February 28th of the tragic and premature end of the life of my friend, Brandon Jae Kwan Baker. The loving and only son of Steven (H’82) and Kim Baker, and big brother to his sister, Marissa, Brandon’s passing has plunged all who knew him, and all who know his family, indeed an entire community in southern New Jersey, into a feeling of loss that simply cannot be measured. Brandon was 18 years old when, in the fading light of a Friday afternoon, a motor vehicle accident snatched him away from us far too soon, and ended a life that was filled with tremendous happiness and great promise. Brandon did something that few others have done. He happily attended just about every Maryland football game in recent memory. And he loved the very concept of tailgating, especially Phi Sig tailgates. He brought smiles to everyone and was enthusiastic about everything having to do with the University of Maryland. At the services for Brandon it seemed that his entire hometown came out to pay tribute to a life well lived, to a person who brought joy to others, and to a friend that they will not soon forget. Baseball was his game, and his team arrived in uniform - they have since retired his number. As I attempt to write this memorial his parents are attending Brandon’s high school graduation ceremony. The school has placed an empty chair at the ceremony. His classmates, to this very day, express a deep feeling of emptiness brought about by his absence. Brandon Jae Kwan Baker would have made a great Terp, and a terrific member of Phi Sigma Kappa. He always did, and I know he would always, make us “Damn Proud” of him, his accomplishments, and his character. I think I’ll place a Phi Sig pin on this page so, whenever I look at this magazine, I’ll be reminded of what might have been, and of how very much I miss my friend...and “nephew.” - Joseph E. Criscuoli, H’82

Page 38: The THIRD DEGREE - Summer 2014

I n the future, when I’m asked to describe my experience working as Phi Sigma Kappa’s House Mom for the past two and a half years, what will I say? Perhaps I’ll talk about how I was asked to

away weekend every semester without fail. Maybe I’ll gripe about DJ and his constant messes, the highlights being the yogurt-covered basement and his name written in blood on the door. I still have yogurt on my bike, by the way. Or perhaps I’ll reminisce on all the Greek Life events I worked, where I always took a tally of the number of PSK’s present and reprimanded their low attendance (in the form of Instagram photos and notes left on the dry-erase board). Maybe I’ll talk about the countless lunches in the basement, or the many times I was serenaded by the boys, or the long conversations, or the fact that I had someone to talk to when I came home, no matter what.

But at the end of the day, these are all stories, that together amount to one overall message: living with PSK and watching them grow as individuals and a chapter has been one of the best adventures of my life. I knew coming to Maryland that I loved working with college students, but I never dreamed I would get to work in such close quarters to 30 college-aged guys—literally, close quarters. The house smells to high heaven when the air conditioner is out and all 30 boys are sweaty. And even though I occasionally overheard conversations I didn’t want to hear (“would you tell your mother that?!”), and even though they sometimes pissed me off when they erased my messages or drew dirty pictures on them, and even though they have a different concept of the idea of “clean,” I consider them all to be my brothers.

With the title “House Mom,” it seems I’d be more inclined to refer to them as my children. And even though I had to remind them to clean up after themselves sometimes, or move their laundry from the washer to dryer, or just general damage control, I don’t consider them my children. Instead, I know I’ve developed relationships more akin to brotherhood, and that I have made many friends for life through this experience. Even though I am not a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, I will forever hold the organization, and the Eta Chapter in particular, dear to my heart, for they have provided for me some of my best memories from the University of Maryland. I will forever be thankful that I got to share a home with them.

Now that the house is empty yet again, another summer upon us, I have the house to myself for two months before I move out, and on, as well. But there’s something strange about living in the house in the summer months,

because a key component is missing: the guys. The noisiness, the techno music (how can anyone study with that in the background?), the cursing that accompanies video games…it’s all gone, and I’m sad knowing I’ll never once again live with 30 guys. While I’m excited for this next chapter of my life, I’ll always miss my little home at Phi Sigma Kappa. Thank you to the amazing brothers and alumni that have welcomed me into their lives and have made me feel so at home. I am so excited to keep in touch and see where your lives take you.

Also, DJ: thanks for the “Thanks for putting up with me” chocolates. They are delicious.

Damn Proud, Katherine Kipp
