WINDOW INTO THE PAST Sandra J Stacey

What Would you find if you looked in the “WindoW into the past” in deCeMBeR:

The Times-Picayune (New Orleans, Louisiana) 4 Dec. 1842, Sun. P. 2 FATAL AFFRAY. The Clarksville, (Tenn.) Chronicle announces a fatal affray in that town in which a man, a stranger in that vicinity, was shot down by Wm. Angel, in the house of the latter.

Vicksburg Daily Whig (Vicksburg, MS) 5 Dec. 1842, Mon.

The Clarksville (Tenn.) Chronicle, says that three trunks were

stolen from the boot of the mail stage between that place and

Hopkinsville (KY) on the night of the 12th ult. This is the third

time that baggage has been stolen on this route. Passengers

should look out for their baggage, as the contractors seem to pay

little attention to it.

Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 8 Dec. 1865, Fri. Page 3 Christmas Festival - It gives us pleasure to announce that the ladies of the Episcopal Church of this city, in order to relieve the embarrassment of debt which hangs over their church, have determined to give a festival, at the court home, during the Christmas Holidays, which will even surpass their last entertainment. The court house has been thoroughly repaired and is now in excellent condition. Mark well young men, save your spare change for this praiseworthy object, for more beauty will be congregated within those old legal walls than has been witnessed in our city for years past. We will give a more definite notice in our next issue. Clarksville Weekly 8 Dec. 1865, Fri. Page 3 PORK-We noticed, on Wednesday last, a small lot of pork, delivered for family use, at 12 ½ cents, per pound. It is generally believed that the ruling rates will not be over 10 cents, and probably less.

The Philadelphia Inquirer (Philadelphia, PA) 30 Dec. 1865, Sat. P. 1 Riot at Clarksville, Tenn. Clarksville, Tenn., Dec. 28. —A row occurred on Christmas between some drunken negro soldiers and citizens. A policeman interfered and struck a negro soldier with a club. The negro resented, using his bayonet. A crowd gathered, and Meck Carnly, formerly a notorious guerrilla. drew a revolver and fired two shots at the soldiers, who then fired into the crowd. Two white men were seriously wounded. and one soldier slightly. Major Bond, agent of the Freedmen’s Bureau, promptly quelled the disturbance. sending the soldiers to the fort. But they soon returned in large force, and a serious affair was threatened, but as Carnly had escaped out of the town the excite-ment soon quieted down. All has been quiet since and no fears are enter-tained of another difficulty. Wyandotte Commercial Gazette (Kansas City, KS) 1 Dec. 1866, Sat. P.2

Death of Cave Johnson. Hon. Cave Johnson, Polk's P. M. General, died on Friday 23d inst., at his residence in Clarksville Tenn., aged 72 years. He served fourteen years in Congress, acquiring a nautical representation. He went into the rebellion reluctantly, and having since been elected a State Senator, refused to serve because he could not deny that be had extended aid and comfort to the re-bellion. Clarksville Chronicle 3 Dec. 1870, Sat. Page 3 PANTHER KILLED - A large panther was killed near Russellville, Ky., last Tuesday, when a party of gentlemen went out and killed his panther-ship. A young gentleman of veracity, in this city, vouches for the above fact.

Clarksville Chronicle 17 Dec. 1870. Sat. SHOT - on the 7th inst., J. P. Crutcher, while on his way home from White Bluff station, Dickson county, was shot by a widow lady named Deloach. She charges that Crutcher violated her person, and she shot him in self-defense. Crutcher is said to have been a young man of good reputation, the lady one of doubtful character. She is in jail at Charlotte, awaiting trial. Clarksville Chronicle 24 Dec. 1870, Sat. Page 3 A Good Move — Rev. A. D. Sears, in behalf of the Masonic fraternity of this city, bought forty acres of land, at $54 per acre, lying on the Charlotte Pike, a portion of the McClure tract. It is intended for a burial ground, to be owned and controlled by this noble fraternity. This is an excellent location, and is not liable to be. interfered with by other Improvements, and all who desire it can purchase a lot for the benefit of their family. We hope this spot may be beau-tified anal improved in such manner to reflect credit upon the order and the city. The Pickens Sentinel (Pickens, SC) 2 Dec 1880, Thu. P. 1 The cupola of the court-house at Clarksville, Tenn., is surmounted by a bra-zen eagle measuring twelve feet from tip to tip.

The Tennessean 8 Dec 1900, Sat. Page 6 Clarksville, Tenn. Dec. 7. —(Special.)—An entertainment was given yester-day afternoon by Mrs. Frank Snaden at Tiptop, the suburban home of Mrs. Martin Dunlop. Special Dispatch to The American. CLARKSVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 3. — Charles H. Bailey, City Recorder of Clarksville since 1884, died at 8:30 o'clock this morning. His death was due to an overdose of one of the coal tar preparations for headache, from which he was a great sufferer. The drug was taken sometime about o'clock last night. It was not until 10:30 o'clock, however, that anything unusual was observed. At that time his wife called in the family. physician, who applied antidotes. At 3 o'clock this morning a reaction had set in and the respiration, circulation and temperature were near-ly normal. The physicians thought him sufficiently recovered to leave him, his son remaining by his bedside to attend him. At 8:11 o’clock this morning it was seen that the heart was rapidly failing. The family physician was hasti-ly summoned. but Mr. Bailey had passed away before his arrival. Mr. Bailey was down town yesterday apparently in his usual health save for the headache of which he complained. He was a nephew of the late Senator Bailey. He was a gallant Confederate soldier. He represented Montgomery County in the lower House in 1896 and 1897. His death causes much regret in a community in which he was so widely known and esteemed. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias. Odd Fellows, Elks and of Forbes Bivouac, Confederate Veterans. He is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. The former is a daughter of the late B. W. Macrae. a prominent banker, who died here re-cently.

====================================

For those who are not aware of it, our November guest speaker the talented Jim Long, is Linda Long’s son. If you missed the program it was your loss. Jim is the author of 10 books on Stewart CO TN and has 35 years of research experience. His program on “Jack Hinson using Archive Records to Separate Fact from Fiction” was well worth attending. Jim produced original copies of records from different archives to disapprove some of the myths associated with the famous or infamous (ever how you want to view it) Jack Hin-son.

John W. "Jack" Hinson, "Old Jack" (1807–1874) was a farmer in Stewart CO TN who was also a Confederate sniper against the Union Army. It is said he was neutral at the outbreak of the war but took up arms after two of his sons were executed. Jim showed records dis-proving this theory where Jack signed every available petition he could before then. Jim also showed records that made it questionable that his sons were even dead. Jim’s program as also was well attend-ed.
