“She would have been a good woman,” The Misfit said, “if it had been somebodythere to shoot her every minute of her life.“

– Flannery O’Connor, A Good Man Is Hard To Find

Tennessee Williams described Southern Gothic as a style that captured “an intu-ition, of an underlying dreadfulness in modern experience.” It’s a style of writingpracticed by many writers of the American South including Williams, O’Connor,William Faulkner and Truman Capote. Their stories are frequently characterizedby grotesque, macabre, or fantastic incidents. In the terrible girlswe are usheredinto the back kitchen of an uninviting diner off the barren I-10 in Northern Floridawhere we meet our protagonists. How did they end up here? Why do they stay?As their finely crafted network of secrets and lies begins to crumble we discoverthese women are bound by ties that are thicker than blood.

When Jackie first brought me the terrible girls I didn’t imagine it would lead tothe full production you’ve come to see. I am so honored to have been a part ofthis play’s journey, from the one-act play we read as part of our Spotlight Seriesto this full length version that will soon be published by Playscripts. Azuka The-atre has long nurtured the voices of new and emerging playwrights, particularlythose from the Philadelphia region. the terrible girls marks our 9th World Pre-miere in just 11 Seasons and as Azuka’s Literary Manager it has been an honor tobe a part of bringing those new plays to the stage. We will continue to fosternew work, including Jackie’s next piece Skin & Bonewhich we will be reading onApril 18th as part of the Spotlight Series.

A roomful of women worked on this production (plus Nate, who I’m sure will tellyou stories) and it is that unique collaboration that produced what you see be-fore you today.

It can be a tough road for women in this business; whether they are directors, playwrights, actresses, stage managers or designers. Having the opportunity tohave ALL that creativity in one room was an extraordinary experience. As this isWomen’s History Month please take a moment and thank all the wonderful (andterrible) women in your life... because as you’ll soon find out, you don‘t want tosee what happens when we get angry.

Allison Heishman
