THE TEMPEST: A SYNOPSISBefore the play opens: the main character, Prospero, Duke ofMilan, was so involved in studying magic and other arts that heappointed his brother Antonio to rule the kingdom for him.Antonio conspired with Alonso, King of Naples, to deposeProspero, and banished him with his three -year -old daughterMiranda to an apparently uninhabited island. However, alreadyliving on the island was the witch Sycorax and her deformed sonCaliban. Sycorax had imprisoned Ariel, the Spirit of the Air, inthe cleft of a pine forever, but after her death Prospero releasedAriel provided that he would help him in his study of magic;Caliban was unwillingly made Prospero's menial servant.Twelve years later, the action of the play opens with the shipwreckof the conspirators: Alonso, King of Naples, Sebastian hisbrother, and Ferdinand his son, are returning from Tunis wherethe King's daughter has just been married; with them is Gonzalo,a faithful courtier, and Antonio of Milan. Prospero, by his magicand the help of Ariel, calls up the tempest which wrecks them onhis island, where they wander about in separate groups. Prosperofirst arranges that Ferdinand — who believes himself the solesurvivor — should meet Miranda, and when they fall in love, proceeds to use Ferdinand roughly in order to test his love. Thegroup of courtly survivors is seen next, pondering their escapefrom the sea. All are charmed asleep by Ariel except for Antonioand Sebastian who plot to murder Alonso, but he is saved bybeing awakened by Ariel. The third group now enter: Trinculo,a timorous jester, and Stephano, a clownish drunken butler. Theymeet Caliban, make him their servant and plot with him to killProspero. Meanwhile, Prospero teases the courtiers with amysterious banquet, and then has Ariel denounce the "three menof sin" for their treachery; he causes a masque to be performedbefore Ferdinand and Miranda, to celebrate their coming marriage, and then forestalls Caliban and the others in their plan to murderhim. Prospero is now ready to complete his project, begun bythe tempest, of bringing all these different people and events to aharmonious conclusion ...
