Themselves Worthy of Recognition

DAN McLAMBA friendly smile and a great personality make DanMcLambone of the outstanding members

of his senior class and have won him the title of "Friendliest" in the senior superlatives. Along

with his smile and personality, he has the desire and ability to learn; his high school record

speaks for itself.

He has been an active participant in many school functions, scholastic and otherwise. Hehas belonged to the Beta Club and the Monogram Club, and he acted as vice-president of his

sophomore class. He also participated in the class play his senior year.

Sports have maintained an active place in Dan's school days, for he has proved himself a

star of both football and basketball. His senior year, he was voted co-captain of the basketball

and football squads. He performed a remarkable feat in his football career and, as a result,

was chosen All -Conference and All-East of 1966.

Throughout his four years of high school, Dan has earned many honors. His high grades

have enabled him to serve as waiter at the Junior Senior his sophomore year, to act as a

marshal his junior year, and to attend the Scholarship Banquet for two years. During the

summer separating his junior and senior years. Dan represented our school while attending

Boys' State. He was also selected as a Morehead nominee.

Dan hopes to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and make Business Ad-ministration his major study. His later plans include law school. His outstanding character

assures his success in his future pursuits.

PAT HOLMESPat Holmes has been a truly outstanding member of the 1967 senior class. He has been a

very active participant in sports and club activities as well as in the senior play. However, such extracurricular matters have never hampered his academic studies. He has maintained a

high scholastic average throughout all four high school years.

His membership has been held by the Beta Club, Monogram Club, Band, Annual Staff, for

which he was photographer, and the Student Council.

Pat's honors have been many. As a sophomore, he served as a waiter at the Junior-SeniorProm. His junior year was climaxed by his being marshal to commencement exercises, andhe attended the scholarship banquet held each year for the top eight students in each class. Hewas a Benson representative to Boys' State the summer preceding his senior year. He also wonthe title of a Morehead County Winner. His senior year, he was voted "Most Likely to Succeed"by his fellow classmates.

Pat has participated in three sports: Football, Basketball, and Track. He has also actedas sports comentator to the Benson Review.

After graduation, he plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill andmake journalism his major.

Pat Holmes has indeed been an asset to our class.

JOYCE JERNIGANAnother who has proved herself worthy of the title "Outstanding" is Joyce Jemigan. Voted

"Most Intellectual" girl by her classmates, Joyce is destined to go places. Her high school

record is evidence of this fact. Though she has participated in many extracurricular matters,

her scholastic standing has remained high and worthy of recognition.

Her activities during four years of high school have included membership in the F. H. A.

Club, F.T.A. Club, Glee Club, Beta Club, of which she was the secretary her senior year;

Student Council for two years, and the Annual Staff.

As a sophomore, Joyce was elected secretary of her class, and was chosen to serve as a

waitress at the Junior-Senior Prom. Her junior year ended with her acting as marshal at

graduating exercises, her rating being second in rank. For the past three years, her high

academic abilities have enabled her to attend the annual Scholarship Banquet. During the

summer after her junior year, she attended Girls' State at the University of North Carolina for

a week. Her senior year, Joyce was a member of the "pymalion" cast. She was also invited to at-

tend the Scholarship Weekend Program at East Carolina College, which is sponsored in honor

of rising college freshmen who have exhibited scholastic abilities and potential character. Thehighlight of her senior year is claimed by her editorship of the TATLER which was indeed a

new and challenging experience.

Following graduation, Joyce plans to make East Carolina her alma mater where she will

study math. The senior class is proud to have had Joyce amidst its members.

74

A SALUTE . . . To Those Who Have Proved

DAN SURLESA terrific personality, a friendly smile, and a great deal of intellect are the basic traits

that make Dan Surles an outstanding member of our senior class. As a result classmates voted

him the "Most Popular" boy.

He has been very active throughout his four years in high school in such clubs as the Beta,

Monogram, and Future Teachers of America. He held the position of class Secretary-Treasurer

his freshman year.

Dan's grades have remained very high, and as a reward he has attended for the past three

years the annual Scholarship Banquet. He was also chosen to serve as waiter to the Junior-

Senior Prom his sophomore year and as marshal his junior year.

He is extremely interested in sports such as football and basketball both in which he has

actively participated during his high school years.

Such a well-rounded personality confirmed his nomination for the Morehead Scholarship

which was indeed a great honor.

Dan's future plans include attending either the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

or North Carolina State University. The senior class of 1967 is proud to have had Dan as a

member, and we wish him a long life of success.

CATHY CANADAYVoted the "Most Likely to Succeed" girl of the senior class, Cathy Canaday has truly proved

to us that she deserved this title. Taking on many activities, including four zealous years of

basketball. Cathy has made her high school career. Nevertheless she has upheld a high school

record of outstanding commendation.

Her membership has been included in these clubs: Glee Club, F.H. A. Club, MonogramClub, Student Council, and F.T. A. ,

for which she served as president her senior year. During

her junior year, Cathy held a part in the junior play, and her senior year marked her as the

star of "Pymalion", a production by the senior class.

Cathy has received many honors, all based on her high scholastic abilities. She was a

marshal over the commencement exercises her junior year, waitress at the Junior-Senior Promher sophomore year and attendant to the Scholarship Banquet for 3 years. For her outstanding

work in history, Cathy was selected to attend Governor's School in Winston-Salem. She wasnamed Benson High School's 1967 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow due to her home-making knowledge and attitude.

Cathy plans to attend St. Mary's Junior College, from where she will transfer to the

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Whatever she does, Cathy is sure to be a success.

HAMPTON WHITTINGTONOur senior class throughout its twelve years of existence would never have been the same

without that mishievous, intellectual, and dynamic member—Hampton Whittington.

His extracurricular activities during four years of high school have been numerous, but,

all the while, he has attained an honorable scholastic standing. In fact, high grades, out-

standing character, and good sportsmanship led to his being named "Most Intellectual" boyby the graduating class and nominee for the Morehead Scholarship.

Hampton's high school years have been anything but dull ! He was class vice-president his

freshman year, representative to the Student Council his sophomore year, and president of the

Monogram and Beta Club and sports editor for the Annual Staff his senior. He served as waiter

to the Prom, acted as chief marshal his junior year, and attended the scholarship banquet

each spring.

Throughout his school, Hampton has been an active and valuable Phantom. He has par-

ticipated in football, basketball, and baseball. He was voted Co-Captain of both his foot-

ball and basketball teams by his fellow players and all -conference by the football conference

coaches. His performances have been outstanding.

Following his graduation, Hampton plans to attend the University of North Carolina at

Chapel Hill to study accounting. We are sure Hampton will be a success at whatever he under-

takes.
