Independent Living Our Ailsa Craig Neighbourhood has a Story Ailsa Craig, a small town twenty miles west of London Ontario was home to Ronald Schlegel from the age of 5 through to mar- riage and having a family of 3 boys with wife Barbara. It is place that defines small town Ontario, with a grocery store, church, post office, library, restaurant and coffee shop – a place where people from the area come to gather in community, interact with one another and share stories. This small town was the inspira- tion behind Ron’s vision of building his senior communities as a Village, where residents could enjoy each other’s company and feel the same sense of belonging that Ron felt while growing up in Ailsa Craig. Our Independent Living Apartments form the Ailsa Craig Neigh- bourhood and represent the hallmark in which our Village philos- ophy was born. Residents enjoy their own “home” in a self- sustaining apartment, with ample space and a full kitchen, wash- er and dryer but more importantly being able to easily engage in the activities and amenities on Main Street. Whether it be visiting the library, saying hello to friends at the café, joining church service in the chapel or simply picking up milk at the General Store, it all makes a visit to Main Street and Town Square a time to enjoy the company of others and engage in purposeful activi- ty, just like life before moving into a retirement community.

CHOICES AND CHANGE Anyone living here has gone through many changes, some by choice and others not so fortunate, as their de- cisions were made by caregivers or medical doctors - many and varied options are available! In any case, liv- ing here offers many chances for all kinds of things – mostly change of one kind or other. For some – living here was a choice freely taken, for the many options available, whatever the particular need might be. Knowing that help is available, with the full knowledge of the details involved can truly be a drawing card, providing a comfortable life. Many personal con- siderations are involved in this decision. In other cases, there may have been health reasons for the decision to live here. Maybe the need for an easier lifestyle, since the realities of aging have changed the perspective you once had. Like no steps, or a wider corridor, or even just the chance for socialization in a new network. Each of you knows why you are here – and you know your own reasons too! Accepting the reality of change, maybe a need for some light medical attention or assistance in dai- ly living was required by you. The ideal would be a free choice, but as we all know – there may come a time when free choice is not an option, and the call for your power of attorney may be re- quired. Hopefully you have chosen this person to act on your behalf, who has real integrity of spirit, and a desire to act on the best option for you according to your prior wishes. The word choice comes up again and your “POA”, freely chosen by you at a better time in your life’s journey, will make your de- cisions. This will enable you to live your remaining years in peace. Since we all know the end comes without choice – may we all have the comfort of our chosen “POA” – for health and financial considerations on our behalf. Have you thought about this?
ANOTHER LOOK Most of the time we just go about our daily routines with complacency – as if it will always be the this way. BUT have you ever stopped and thought about how much things have changed for you? If you just reflect on the past week (if you can remember), many changes have taken place, and you probably didn’t even notice! This is true for all of us. Change has been a constant companion for you, because change is inevitable, and necessary for progress. If you think of just one week ago – it may be hard to remember what was going on – unless it was a special time for you, but you must admit there have been many changes along the way. Some more significant than others. Quick recall will bring to mind the major changes you have experi- enced. Some traumatic and others pleasing and nurturing. In any case the reality of change is an ever-present occurrence in all our lives. Even if you are not aware of it – it happens! Of course – the ultimate and final change for each of us will be death – and one none of us es- capes. It always takes me aback, that we act as if we are shocked or surprised when death hap- pens! What? Why me? I never thought I would be alone. My wife cheated me by dying first. The real story of your life is to make the most of what you have right now – because you already know that it will change one day! When you accept the reality of death as the ultimate change, you will live a richer and more satisfying life as you value and cherish each moment.
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER THE TANSLEY TIMES
Ray Swash 1854
The Wings of God After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno's damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he gently struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings.
The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had re- fused to abandon her babies. Then the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her small body, the mother had re- mained steadfast...because she had been willing to die, so those under the cover of her wings would live.
'He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.' (Psalm 91:4) There is no limitation of the forces and personalities which the Father may use to uphold his purpose and sustain his creatures. "The eternal God is our refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Behold, he who keeps us shall neither slumber nor sleep. We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, for the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayers." Time waits for no one. Treasure every moment you have. You will treasure it even more when you can share it with someone special. To realize the value of a friend...lose one! Certain things catch your eye, but pursue only those that capture your heart.
