  • Stonewood Partnerships is delighted to unveil The Tannery, a unique collection of 43 beautifully designed one, two, three and four-bedroomed homes on a historic village site.

Make your home on this heritage location adjoining a beautiful Wiltshire village. You’ll be following in the footsteps of generations of artisans who plied their trade making leather products at the world-famous J&T Beaven Tannery since the 1700s.

The beautiful listed stone buildings, which once housed a multitude of workers, form the backdrop and inspiration for superb modern apartments and houses whose design reflects their iconic surroundings. Skilfully designed to match the traditional feel of its industrial historic setting, The Tannery offers the very best in modern comfort and space.

Distinctive industrial artefacts, including wooden tanning drums, are incorporated as artwork or decoration, retaining a permanent reminder of centuries of honest endeavour and skill.

A short walk leads to neighbouring Glove Factory Studios and The Field Kitchen - a rural workspace complex, café and events venue converted from part of J & T Beaven Tannery over 10 years ago. Here you’ll find a family-friendly café with regular supper clubs and wild swimming.

The Glove Factory Studios work-hub will be extended with the launch of the Leather Factory in 2021 – a further 4 buildings of contemporary workspace for digital, tech and creative businesses set in the listed stone buildings of the original tannery. Managed by the same team, Leather Factory will build upon the existing programme of cultural, creative and family events open to The Tannery community, Holt Village and residents across Wiltshire and Bath.

A home at The Tannery promises endless views across Wiltshire’s open countryside plus a daily invitation for a morning run or dog walk across the fields! Not in the mood? Then pop out for coffee or a fascinating talk surrounded by the beautifully landscaped grounds and enticing shared spaces of the Tannery & Leather Factory. Need to travel to work? This could be your opportunity to ditch the daily commute and find yourself a desk in an inspirational workspace you can walk to in minutes.

  • C R A F T E D O V E R G E N E R A T I O N SIt was during the reign of George II in 1770 that the Beaven family started their wool stapling business on the outskirts of Holt, chosen for its access to water and the ease of transporting sheep from the Duke of Beaufort’s estate at Badminton.

J&T Beaven introduced its tannery and began making rough leather gloves for farmers and housemaids. By 1870 it was producing better quality leather and when a wealthy customer asked for this to be used to make him some gloves, the firm’s fortunes were transformed. He left his stylish new gloves on the hall table of his smart London club and fashion-conscious members demanded some of their own.

Within decades the firm was exporting gloves all over the world. Over 600 workers were processing around 1,500 dozen sheepskins a week for chamois leathers and leather for gloves, book covers, clothes, and wallets among other uses.

During both world wars the company supplied leather for military use, such as lining for equipment and uniforms, and many of its workers signed up to fight for their country. Many were never to return.

But whether in peacetime or wartime the company was renowned across the globe for the perfect quality of its leather, thanks to the skill and dedication of its workforce.

The J. & T. Beaven leather and glove company was founded, according to tradition, in Holt in 1770, although members of the family seem to have been working leather there for some time before.

Christopher Beaven bought the house that is now the office in 1758 and by 1782 his nephew Thomas was running the business as wool-stapler, fellmonger and leather dresser. The chamois leather was used during the Second World War for lining pilots’ gloves and jackets.

Post-war, J&T Beaven’s chamois leather, made exclusively from New Zealand sheepskin, was exported worldwide while chamois found fame as a cloth for drying cars. Today Beaven’s continues to produce and sell chamois worldwide from its tanneries in Tamil Nadu province, India.

  • Holt is two miles from Bradford on Avon, where there is a fast railway line to London Paddington, Bath and Bristol. The historic city of Bath is only ten miles away and there are plenty of shops and amenities in Melksham and Trowbridge, a 5-minute drive from Holt Village.

Junction 17 of the M4 at Chippenham is just 14 miles away, while Junction 18 is a 17-mile drive via the A46.

The village and surrounding area offer many opportunities for country walks and cycle rides. Holt is home to the charming National Trust Courts Garden, a captivating series of English country roomset gardens and an arboretum. Just a mile outside Holt is another National Trust property, Great Chalfield Manor, a magnificent 15th century manor house and garden.

Leisure centres with swimming pools and a range of private gyms can be found in Bradford on Avon, Melksham and Trowbridge. And golfers won’t be disappointed with excellent courses to choose from at Cumberwell Park near Bradford on Avon, Whitley near Melksham and Kingsdown on the edge of Bath.
