“Come Holy Spirit and set our hearts on fire” is a prayer often recited before a sermon is preached. We have just celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit at the Feast of Pentecost. Coming fifty days after Easter, the Holy Spirit breathed new life into the small group of disciples left behind when Jesus ascended into heaven.

The beginning of the Church!

On the Day of Pentecost, we celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit in a big way at St. David’s. The Right Rev. George Councell, XI Bishop of NJ, was with us for a service of confirmation, reception and reaffirmation. AND Mrs. Ruth Councell was with us as we celebrated receiving the final set of the liturgical hangings and altar pa-raments commissioned by St. David’s. The red hangings for Pentecost and Palm Sunday are glorious! We are so grateful to her for sharing her artistic gifts with us. I am very grateful to all of you for the donations that have made our collection of liturgical banners and vestments possible. We celebrated as 3 young people were

confirmed and 6 adults received and reaffirmed!

The disciples were so filled with the Holy Spirit, that even though Jesus was no longer with them, through “a spirit of adoption”, they became Children of God. And so we are. Children of God and heirs of God with Christ (Romans 8:14-17). As the Church, we are the Body of Christ and also Children of God. All this because of the presence of the Holy Spirit, received by the disciples over two thousand years ago. But that was not a “once for all” event. The Holy Spirit still breathes life into our church and the church all throughout the world. I believe that that is the reason, despite our obvious human failures, that the church still exists. Because the Holy Spirit breathes new life

into her and into each of us as disciples of Christ.

St. David’s has experienced this new life in so many ways over this past program year. Meirs Hall has led us into new life, new community, new ways to serve and into new fellowship with one another. Our new Community Garden will provide nutritious vegetables for those who receive food from RISE as well as those within our church. We have welcomed new members over the past year whose gifts have given new life to our worshiping and serving community. Our new Way of St. Paul team will help breathe new life into our lives as disciples and into our efforts to form new disciples.

The Holy Spirit is definitely moving in our church and in her people.

I hope each of you will come to church during the month of June to see the fire of the Holy Spirit writ large in our new liturgical banners. Our church is on fire! And we pray… Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful

and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Amen.

The St. David's Community Garden has been planted and looks great!! Soon there will be tomatoes, zucchini, peppers and more to donate to RISE in Hightstown. Stop by and see the wonderful job that was done on Sunday, May 17th. Much thanks goes to the hard working construction crew, Jane Lohr and Tom Pearson and their son Adam, Steve Channon, Malcolm McFarland, Mike Duck, Carol Rodgers, Larry and Pat Kraft and Arlis and Aura Astudillo and their little helper, Arleen. Over four hours and despite the heat, they constructed 6 raised garden beds, filled them with top soil and planted all the veggies. Now we need more volunteers, on a weekly basis, to help keep them growing. Please sign up for garden care - watering 2-3 times per week as needed and harvesting when the time comes. If enough people volunteer, your week of care could be no more than once a month. Hope you will join us.

Annual Golf Outing June 8, 2015

The 2015 Golf Outing is on Monday, June 8 at the Peddie Golf Course. It is not too late to register and play. The scramble format is suitable for all ability levels. The price is very reasonable for the opportunity to play a great course like Peddie. If you ask nicely, the Rector will even bless your clubs! Lunch and dinner are included. The Fund for the Relief of Widows, Widowers and Orphans of Clergy in the Diocese of New Jersey

The Canons of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey require every parish to take an annual offering for the Fund for the Relief of Widows, Widowers and Orphans of Clergy in the Diocese. The purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to clergy families upon the death of any member of the clergy canonically resident in

the Diocese.

Congratulations to our 2nd Bible Challenge Group! Our Bible Challenge is wrapping up its commitment to reading the Bible all the way through in a year. They

began last Easter and will finish in June. Christopher Achen, Abbi Clissold, Chuck Rose and Elizabeth Lewis

have met most Thursdays to discuss their readings and support each other in this endeavor. Congratulations to

each of them as they celebrate this achievement.

Summer Schedule will begin on Sunday, June 28 with one service at 9:30 a.m.

There will be a staffed nursery and activity bags will be available in the narthex for all young children. There will be no Adult Forum or Children’s Talks during July and August. If you would like to provide lemonade for after service “lingering”, please see the sign-up sheet near the Fish Library. Our coffee hour maven, Carol Miller, has been granted the summer “off” so if no one is

signed up, there will be no “treats”!

Our rector will be attending General Convention as a diocesan first-alternate deputy at the end of

June and will be on vacation during July. The Rev. Dr. Jacob David and The Rev. Johan Johnson

will be filling in for her on Sundays and on Wednesdays. Brother John, Deacon Hank, Father Jacob

and Laura Labassi will be handling pastoral calls. Please contact one of them or the office if the

need arises.

We are pleased to announce that St. David’s has been accepted into our new diocesan program, The Way of

St. Paul. Our committee will be made up of our rector, deacon, Christopher Achen, Carol Rodgers, Abbi

Clissold, David Miller, Angela Levy, Ed Miller and Catherine Katona. What a great group! We will begin our work

this month and members will attend an intensive training on June 26-27. Please keep them in your prayers as

they learn about becoming and forming disciples and bringing our message into the communities we serve.

Cathedral Sunday

On Sunday, June 14, our diocese will celebrate Trinity Cathedral with Cathedral Sunday. As Dean of the Trenton

Convocation, our rector will be the celebrant at the 10 am service with Bishop Stokes as preacher. It would be

great for her to see some familiar faces in the congregation!! Also, at 3 pm, there will be a Choral Evensong and

all choirs are invited to participate. On Saturday, a flower arranging workshop is planned and flowers will be

arranged to fill the cathedral! You are invited to attend any and all of the events over the weekend. Please speak

to David Miller if you have questions.

Seventy Years Ago I Entered Holy Orders It was the first Sunday in June 1945 that I entered Holy Orders in All Saints Cathedral in Edmonton, Alberta. The prelate who or-dained me, first as Deacon and then, much later, as Priest was Walter Barfoot, the

Bishop of Edmonton who, soon after, was chosen by the Ca-nadian House of Bishops to be the Primate of All Can-ada and was elevated to be the Archbishop of Edmonton. Consequently, we all learned to stop addressing him “my

lord” and began addressing him “your grace”.

The first Sunday in June in 1945 was a bright sunny day. My day began early in the morning with preparation and silence with the Sisters of St. John the Divine in their convent. After that I went to the Cathedral to swear allegiance to His Majesty King George VI in the presence of the Archbishop and the Dean of the Cathedral. Soon after that the Service

began in the Cathedral.

My father and mother were there. Dad, a priest, took part in the Ordination liturgy, and my mother sat in the front pew with a close friend of hers whom she had known from years before in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. Being now 70 years ago I do not remember much of the service and I do not remember any difficulties, so it must have gone well. After the service my parents and I, with some friends, were the guests of the Archbishop and his wife for lunch in a downtown hotel dining

room.

Later, in the afternoon, I was scheduled to preach at Evensong. In those days, in Canada, everything was closed on Sundays and Evensong was usually well-attended with a well-trained and large choir. I have no memory of what I said in my sermon that day, but, after Evensong, the Archbishop said to me on the way out, “Harry, I hope to hear you preach some day.” As far as I knew, His Grace was not deaf, but the whole day was overwhelming to say nothing of the insecurity I

felt by it all. I was 23.

As the weeks advanced, I began to learn what it meant to be the curate in a Cathedral. Dean Trendell was a friendly and easy-going fellow whom everyone liked, and was so helpful to me. One of Dean Trendell’s routines was to leave his office about 10 am and walk the half block across Jasper Avenue to the Hudson Bay Department store to the coffee shop on the lower level. I sometimes accompanied him and everyone

there knew and greeted the Dean.

Among my responsibilities as curate was visiting hospitals, shut-ins, as well as making regular parish calls, running the large youth group, teaching in the Sunday School and sharing in the Cathedral schedule of Services as permitted deacons.

I often officiated at Evensong and also preached in the Dean’s absence. I remember at Evensong, which was always fully sung, chanting and intoning the Office and some girls in the choir would mouth the words “oh Frankie” as I chanted. In those days Frank Sinatra was beginning to be

very popular.

A year later in June 1946, when other Deacons were being ordained priests, the Archbishop summoned me to his office to inform me he had decided not to ordain me a priest “because you look too young.” About 5 months later he re-summoned me to his office to tell me that he had decided to ordain me a priest on Advent Sunday, (evidently I must have aged considerably) “because I need someone to go to Wainwright for Christmas masses”. Advent Sunday was so soon that none of my family was able to be there. I have always felt that it was a hurried and convenient deci-sion. So I have never observed Advent Sunday when I was ordained a priest and have observed the first Sunday in June

when I, to repeat the title of this article, entered Holy Orders.

Early in 1947, I returned to Seminary to complete my studies for the degree Bachelor of Divinity. I was appointed that summer to be the Vicar of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Vegreville, a town about 40 miles each of Edmonton. A year later, my father died. To help my mother to adjust to my father’s death, my sister Alice and I decided to finance a trip, the three of us would take, to visit a cousin of my mother with whom she had corresponded for years but was never financially able to travel to Clifton, NJ, where her cousin lived. It was at that time that I met Bishop Washburn who invited me to consider working in the Diocese of Newark. After Bishop Washburn and Archbishop Barfoot communicated, I was transferred to Newark in June 1950. During the summer months, I supplied in parishes where the clergy were on vacation and in September Bishop Washburn appointed me

to the parish of St. John’s in Dover.

Learning to be an Episcopalian in the USA took some doing! Soon after I began in Dover, a person came to me about using the parish house. I forget what it was all about, but since the parish house was not being used on that day I said “sure”. Within a couple of days, the Junior Warden came to see me and inform me that I did not have the authority to make that decision, only the vestry could. In Canada the par-ish priest had such an authority. I was beginning to learn! One day in Newark I was talking with the rector of Grace Church and I said, “Father, in Canada when the bishop spoke I’d say ‘yes my lord’ or when the archbishop spoke I’d say ‘ yes your grace’. What do you say when an American bishop speaks?” He answered, “Harry, you say ‘so what’” I was still

learning!.

The time has come to start planning St. David’s Cranbury Day Rummage Sale on Saturday, September 12 . It will be, for the most part, indoors in Fellowship Hall. We will begin collecting items at the church for the sale from September 1 to September 11. Please start getting your saleable items together. Household goods, dishes, glasses, vases, baskets, curtains, draperies, furniture, bedding (no mattresses), lamps, knick-knacks, collectibles, books (no text books, please), jewelry, CDs, DVDs, games, toys and other gently used or unused things are

desired. Please do not include any computer equipment or clothing.

We will need volunteer workers for the following tasks:

1. Table set up, Item organization and pricing (Thursday afternoon/evening, 9/10)

2. Final set-up and pricing of items (Friday afternoon/evening, 9/11)

3. Conducting the sale (Saturday, 8AM-2PM, 9/12)

4. Post-sale clean-up (Saturday, 2PM-5PM, 9/12)

The full and (as usual) enthusiastic support of the congregation is sure to make this effort a resounding success.

Cranbury Day Rummage Sale

My ministry since 1950, when I was transferred, has been in Dover, NJ, Madison, NJ, Monterrey, Mexico, St. James, Hackettstown, St. David’s, Cranbury and St. Barnabas, Burlington. As I look back on all those 70 years of ministry in three countries and two languages, I am so grateful to God for all the blessings He has bestowed on me,

and I treasure so many, many happy memories.
