Of particular importance isthe planning initiated for the development of a vision for our Ukrainian Catholic Church for 2020.The Bishops have undertaken a process of discerning priorities for the Church and the developmentof strategies to achieve those priorities. This will especially assist with the allocation of our resources, manpower and material. The process is designed to provide for greater accountability and transparencyin the administration of the Church. Enhanced communication methods are also envisioned. Childhood loss leads to life devoted to mending others’ pain

Sister Sozonta, SSMI, celebrates 100th Birthday

When Sister Sozonta Iskiw, who turns 100 onSaturday, March 5) speaksabout her early childhood,it sounds more like a younggirls’ nightmare.

Indeed, in many ways itwas, but it was also whatlaunched her on a life ofservice to others in thename of God.

Little Tekla Iskiw’s motherAnnie Iwaniw had diedwhen she was just 3 yearsold and before too long,it became impossible forher father, Elias, whobattled acute emphysema,to care for her.

He brought her from homein Innisfree, Alberta,Canada, to theorphanage in Mundare,Alberta, run by the SistersServants of MaryImmaculate, a ByzantineCatholic congregationfounded in Ukraine in1892.

“I was just 4,” she says, and “my little heart wasbreaking. It was thebeginning of a lonelinessthat lasted all my life”.

Her adjustment wasn’teasy, but her life changedforever, thanks to one ofthe Sister Servants.“A nun tried to pacify me,”she says, “and gave me a

little comb. It was a sign ofsomeone who loved me.”

That’s a love for others thatshe has paid forward for therest of her life, ministering onthe street, on the subway, inparishes and in letters shewrites to those who share thekind of heartbreak she knewas a young girl.

She was raised at theorphanage and so, when shewas a teen, it seemed logicalthat she, too, would join thecommunity of Sister Servants. On July 9, 1925, at 14, shebecame Sister Sozonta.

Last August, Sister Sozonta’s85 years as a Sister Servantwas cause for celebration andso it will be Saturday - heractual 100th bir thday.Celebrating with her at aMass of Thanksgiving and a

dinner in her honor willbe Bishop PaulChomnycky of theUkrainian Diocese ofStamford, CanadianProvincial SuperiorTeresa Ann Slota andSuperior GeneralJanice Soluk, who iscoming from Rome.

The congregationdispatched its first sistersfrom Canada to theU.S. in 1935, and SisterSozonta followed twoyears later.

“One would assumethere was a sense offear and trepidation forher,” says Sister Michele, who as ProvincialSuperior has headedthe Sister Sisters in theU.S. for the past 15years. Despite that, she

ways, Sister Sozonta“obediently accepted herfirst mission that would bethe beginning of a lifetimeof caring and lovingservice to God’s people”

She worked in parishministry for six years inMinneapolis, but soonfound herself in charge ofthe congregation’s newproperty in Sloatsburg, purchased in 1941. Theoriginal parcel was theTable Rock estate, developed by descendantsof both AlexanderHamil ton and J.P.Morgan.

Sister Sozonta arrived in1944 and until 1950,Sister Michele says, “sheplanted the seed for allthat one sees today” on a

property that covers 265acres, including asweeping stone grotto - areplica of the grotto ofLourdes - and Stations ofthe Cross with acommanding view of theRamapo Mountains.

In those days there wereabout 100 sisters living inSloatsburg. Sister Sozontawas the field general whodeployed them into theNew York City subwaysystem, seeking donationsfrom riders to allow thesisters to do their work -teaching, adult care, pilgrimage, operating aretreat house andsupporting the Byzantinediocese.

Once on the platforms, thesisters also ministered tothe poor, lonely andhomeless, listening to theirconcerns and sorrows andoffering prayers. The workearned the sisters anickname - “the angels ofthe subway.”

Sister Sozonta, SSMI, celebrates 100th Birthday(continued from previous page)

From 1944 to 1978, thesisters ran a boardingschool for girls, St. Mary’sVi l la Academy, inSloatsburg. There are stillweekend religious retreatson the grounds much ofthe year. For part of thesummer, most of theremaining 31 SisterServants in the U.S. visitthe Sloatsburgmotherhouse. EachAugust, the congregationhosts thousands of pilgrimsjust before the Feast of theAssumption,. Thecongregation alsooperates St. Joseph’sAdult Care Home, a 31-bed facility where SisterSozonta now lives. Thehome will make 70 yearsserving the Rockland areain 2012.

One-to-one ministry hasalways been central toSister Sozonta’s work.

When she worked inMinneapolis, she met atroubled young woman

and devoted her time tocounseling her and helpingher through life’s trials.Eventually, the youngwoman followed SisterSozonta’s path into theSister Servants, becomingSister David. Later, SisterSozonta longevitypermitted her to helpfriends, advocating for herin her final days in a nursinghome.

Those who are called tothe religious life, muchlikethose who serve in themilitary, move often as theirassignments and roleschange. Unlike most, SisterMichele says, SisterSozonta accumulatedfr iends rather thanshedding them as shemoved about.

Over the years, SisterSozonta worked inteaching and schooladministration, earned a

nursing degree andworked as a licensedpracticul nurse. Sheworked in parish ministryunt i l 2002 at theImmaculate ConceptionCathedral in Philadelphia.

As her hearing hasdeteriorated, SisterSozonta carr ies herministry by constantlywriting letters, especiallyto the elderly and alone, but also to young peoplewho are ill. In the caseof one young boy, shesays, “The doctors helphim physically, but notemotionally, I try to fillthat gap.”

“They prayed for me andI prayed for them,” shesays, “It made kind of anice union”.

Come and Get to Know Your Clergy And Religious Men and Women!

The True Paycheck of Answering God’s Call (Part 1)

Once, an aged evangelical minister once told me while I was working Bingo, “Hey!! You might not be getting paid doing what you do, but believe it, what God will pay you is better than any paycheck in the world.” Now the good reverend minister was certainly a well known and good-hearted character, but those words ring especially true when it comes to answering a call to the priesthood. Unfortunately, the cares and harsh reality of the word often prevents us from seeing the rewards that God has for us. Yet Christ Himself tells us that if we truly believe, we can tell mountains to throw themselves into the sea and it would happen. What an amazing blessing, what an amazing gift that we would receive by the power of faith! God does reward all Christians, both cleric and lay person. True, one does not become a millionaire by becoming a priest. Money, power, fame, are not the true rewards of a priest. The true reward of a priest is more precious than any of those things. The true reward of the priest is the love of God and what he does in God’s name, which not only enriches himself but also the people around him. His reward is salvation in Christ, which by through his deeds, inspires other to seek salvation in Christ.

Synaxis of the Archangel Gabriel(March 26)

As Jesus walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting atthe tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levigot up and followed him. While Jesus was having dinner atLevi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating withhim and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw himeating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples:“Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearingthis, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(Ìk. 2, 14-17)

On March 26th, on thesecond day after thefeast of theAnnunciat ion, theChurch celebrates thesynaxis of the ArchangelGabriel.

The archangels areintermediaries betweenGod and men, theyreveal to people themysteries of faith, theprophecies, and anunderstanding of the willof God, they announcegreat and gloriousthings: “For the LordHimself will descendfrom heaven with ashout, with the voice ofthe archangel, and withthe triumph of God, andthe dead in Christ shallrise first; then we whichare alive and remainshall be caught uptogether with them inthe clouds…” (1 Thess.4:16-17).

Virgin Mary, and togetherwith Her to all people, thegreat joy of the incarnationof our Saviour Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It isprecisely for this reasonthat on the day followingthe Annunciation, whichglorifies the Holy VirginMary, in thanks to the Lordthe Christians venerate theArchangel Gabriel, whopart ic ipated in thesacrament of our salvation.

Even in the Old Testamentthere are testimonies of theseven highest angels(archangels) of God, equalin rank and honor. If thecount of the Archangelsbegins with Michael, thewarrior and conqueror ofGod’s enemies, thenGabriel stands in secondplace. He is sent by theLord to announce andexplain the DivineMysteries.

When the prophet Danielwas sent a vision from Godconcerning the fate of theJewish people, but did not

understand it, it was theArchangel Gabriel whowas sent to explain thevis ion to him. TheArchangel Gabriel himselftestifies to the high priestZacharias, announcing tohim the forthcoming birthof his son John: “I amGabriel, that stand in thepresence of God, and amsent to speak unto thee, and to show thee theseglad tidings” (Luke 1:19).This shows that theArchangel Gabriel isextraordinarily close to theLord and is sent by Himto announce the greatestmystery relating to thesalvation of mankind.

According to Churchtradition, it was ArchangelGabriel who announcedto the righteous Joachimand Anna the birth of theirdaughter, the Virgin Mary, and i t was he whoannounced to the HolyVirgin Mary Her gloriousdormition and ascent toheaven.

When on the eve of Hissuffering on the Cross theLord Jesus Christ prayedin the Garden ofGethsemane to the pointof bloody sweat, it wasthe Archangel Gabrielwho, according toChurch tradition, wassent from the heavens tofortify Him.

The myrrh-bearingwomen heard the joyoustidings of the resurrectionof our Lord Jesus Christfrom two angels, one ofwhom was theArchangel Gabriel.

On icons he is usuallydepicted with a floweringbranch from paradise, brought by him to theHoly Virgin.
