laufen Bathrooms aG is a Swiss company specialised on premium segment solu-tions for bathrooms. The headquartes are located in Laufen near Basel. Managed by the family-owned roca group since 1999 laufen runs 8 manufacturing sites in Cen-tral europe, 1800 employees and sales offices in 44 countries.

HISTorICal founDaTIon for ConTemPorary arT anD arCHITeCTure

laufen is synonymous with perfection in terms of form and craftsmanship and for advanced technology with an unobtrusive face. Laufen’s headquarters in the Baselland canton reflect this identity. Ludovica and roberto Palomba designed “bowl / 08”, a washbasin for the Palomba Collection. Architects Nissen & Wentzlaff created a larger version of this object in the form of the building which stands out with its im-pressive exposed concrete and elegant statics.

an inventive spirit and desire for tech-nical innovation are also part of the build-ing’s concept and ( just like the manufac-ture of Laufen’s products) require efficient resource usage and an acceptable eco-logical footprint. As a result, the multi-award-winning building is an outstanding feature in the Basel area which is rich in superb architecture.

The town of Basel manages to strike the difficult balance between placing medi-aeval next to contemporary structures. But it is not just its location that lends the town an international flair. The people living in this university town (also home to many multi-national companies) make Basel inter-national and multi-cultural enough to lend it that big-city feeling, despite being rela-tively modest in size.

During the year, Basel is a mecca for the world of watches. The “Baselworld” watch and jewellery fair opens its doors to the impressive architecture offered by manufacturers and gathers together any-body who is anybody on the art scene during “Art Basel“. Basel citizens, young or old, are out and about in Shrovetide proces-sions or at the autumn fair.

There is roughly one museum per square kilometre in this town and culture-lovers are drawn to the famous museums and art collections here where Swiss, German and French borders meet. The contemporary architecture virtually turns this town into an al-fresco museum and is another good reason to visit.

ARCHITEKTuR

Laufen steht für Perfektion in Form und Ver-arbeitung, für avancierte Technik in schlich-tem Kleid. das Laufen Headquarter im Kanton baselland spiegelt diese Identität wider. In Anlehnung an den von Ludovica und Rober-to Palomba für die Palomba Collection ent-worfenen Waschtisch «bowl / 08» haben die Architekten Nissen & Wentzlaff das Gebäude als massstäbliche Vergrösserung dieser Schale ausgeformt, die nun durch ihre ein-drückliche Sichtbetonoberfläche und ele-gante Statik besticht.

Erfindergeist und das Streben nach technischer Innovation stecken auch im Ge-bäudekonzept und verordnen sich selbst, so wie der Produktion der Laufen Erzeugnisse, einen ressourcenschonenden umgang und eine entsprechende Energiebilanz. der mehrfach ausgezeichnete bau setzt somit ein Zeichen in der an beeindruckender Archi-tektur nicht armen Gegend rund um basel.

der Stadt basel gelingt der beachtliche Spagat, mittelalterliche Substanz neben Zeit-genössisches zu stellen. die Lage bettet die Stadt nicht nur in ein internationales Gefüge, die bewohner der universitätsstadt, die auch Sitz vieler multinationaler Konzerne ist, ma-chen basel so international und multikulturell, wie es für ein Grossstadtgefühl nötig ist – und das auf einem übersichtlichen Stadtplan.

Im Jahreslauf ist basel der Nabel der uhrenwelt, wenn die «baselworld» genannte uhren- und Schmuckmesse beeindruckende Architekturen der Hersteller in ihre messe-hallen einziehen lässt, und versammelt alles, was Rang und Namen auf dem Kunstmarkt hat, im Zuge der «Art basel» in der Stadt am Rhein. die bewohner der Stadt, ob jung oder alt, sind beim Fasnachtsumzug oder der Herbstmesse auf den beinen.

Ausserdem lenken renommierte muse-en und Kunstsammlungen – pro Quadratki-lometer gibt es in dieser Stadt etwa ein mu-seum – die blicke der Kulturwelt ebenso in dieses dreiländereck wie die Gegenwarts-architektur, die die Stadt geradezu zu einem Freilichtmuseum der baukunst macht.

LAuFEN – dIE REGION laufen – THe reGIon

When laufen was founded in Switzerland in 1892, sanitation was still a far cry from the standards and comforts offered today; standards, which were particularly influ-enced by laufen, the only sanitary ceramics producer that manufactures exclusively in Europe.

Some of the production facilities that belong to the company today can be traced back even further into history. In 1878 for example, the pioneer in the mechanical manufacture of sanitary ceramics was a production site belonging to the austrian monarchy.

It is not just tradition, but also the strong anchor the various european manu-facturing sites maintain in their domestic markets, Switzerland, austria and Czech Republic, that underpin the quality of Laufen as a company. Laufen’s goal then was the same as today’s: to lead on tech-nology, service and design.

Back in the 1980s, laufen engineers invented the most efficient high-pressure casting technology for ceramic production and therefore ensured a sustainable break-through in industrial production.

Just as important at laufen are the constant developments in design: wall-mounted WCs and floor-standing washba-sins have enabled a new sense of aesthet-ics. In 2013 Laufen’s world wide material inno vation SaphirKeramik succeeded in revolutionising the design language of ceramic. The innovative and valuable SaphirKeramik formulation gives the start-ing material unprecedented possibilities and scopes. SaphirKeramik is used when a design includes thin walled shapes and tight radii.

laufen has extended its expertise and its portfolio of ceramic products, bathtubs, furniture and accessories to include faucets. In 1854 Charles Kugler founded a small com-pany for brass products in Lausanne. The first water and gas fittings on Swiss soil were made there in 1863. Since 2009 faucets have been produced at the newly built fac-tory in Laufen.

Als im Jahre 1892 in der Schweiz das un-ternehmen Laufen gegründet wurde, waren die sanitären bedingungen noch weit von den heutigen Standards und Annehmlich-keiten entfernt – Standards, die eben auch Laufen als der einzige ausschliesslich in Europa produzierende Sanitärporzellanher-steller gesetzt hat.

Einige der Produktionsstandorte, die heute zum unternehmen gehören, reichen noch weiter in die Geschichte zurück. 1878 etwa war der Pionier in der mechanischen Herstellung von Sanitärkeramik eine Produk-tionsstätte der österreichischen monarchie.

Nicht nur die Tradition, auch die gute Verankerung der verschiedenen europäi-schen Fertigungsstandorte in ihren Heim-märkten Schweiz, Österreich und Tschechien trägt zur sicheren basis der Qualität des un-ternehmens Laufen bei. Laufen hat damals wie heute ein Ziel: führend zu sein in Technologie, Service und design. bereits in den 1980 er Jahren wurde von Laufen in der Schweiz die effizienteste Druckgusstechnologie im be-reich der Keramikverarbeitung erfunden und damit nachhaltig für einen durchbruch im Sinne industrieller Fertigung gesorgt.

Ebenso wichtig sind bei Laufen die Wei-ter entwicklungen in puncto design: Wand-montierte Toiletten und bodenstehende Wasch tische haben eine neue Ästhetik er-möglicht.

mit SaphirKeramik, einer weltweiten materialinnovation, gelang 2013 eine Re-volution in der Formensprache von Kera-mik. die innovative und wertvolle Rezeptur SaphirKeramik gibt dem Ausgangsmaterial noch nie da gewesene möglichkeiten und Spielräume. der Einsatz der SaphirKeramik ist dann gefragt, wenn das design sehr fi-ligrane, dünnwandige Formen und enge Radien vorsieht.

Nun hat Laufen seine Expertise und sein Portfolio aus Keramik, Wannen, möbel und Accessoires noch um den bereich Ar-maturen erweitert. 1854 gründete Charles Kugler in Lausanne ein kleines unterneh-men für messingprodukte. Im Jahr 1863 wurden dort die ersten Wasser- und Gasar-maturen auf Schweizer boden hergestellt. Seit 2009 werden Armaturen am Standort Laufen produziert.
