JUNE NEWSLETTER EDITED BY Janeal Himes-Jacobson
Come as you are. No dress codes.
No judgments.
No discriminations. No distinctions.
So, bring your doubts, questions, and busy kids. God does not reject people. Neither do we. No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome to full participation in all areas of our congregational life and ministry.
At The Sunnyslope Church we do not put a period where God has placed a comma, because we believe God is still speaking and we are still learning what it means to live in Jesus’ realm of love, compassion, and justice.

Dear Sunnyslope Members and Friends,
To begin with, I picked a devil of a time to semi-retire, leave (conceivably) my last full-time parish,
start a new part-time position and move my family and worldly goods 3,000 miles across country. In
addition, I lost my 14-year-old Bischon puppy to lymphoma about a week ago and we’re still
mourning his passing. The icing on the cake was not getting to say goodbye to my son in Baltimore
face to face, as his wife is compromised due to respiratory issues.
I share this with you not because we are having a contest about who’s lost the most in this current
health crisis, because many of you could share your stories in the same context.
I share it instead because I want you to know me better and my state of mind as I begin to work
together with you as your settled part time pastor. To be honest I come to you with a degree of
brokenness and need your help in getting off to a good start.
On the up side, I come with 35 years of local and wider church experience and am extremely happy
and excited to be back in home territory and closer to my roots and family; I am looking forward with
anticipation to working with you as the congregation you are now and who you might become as
you grow into the future; and I have to say how impressed I’ve been with you as I’ve seen you
operate as a group—you have a tremendous amount of talent, enthusiasm, can-do spirit and
Christian love and empathy, much of which the world around us is starving for.
It’s going to take me a while to get my act together and my legs fully under me to serve God through
you in the weeks and months ahead, there’s no doubt about that! But the good news is that we travel
this new and difficult pathway together, carrying considerable talent and experience, with Jesus at
our side and his abiding love for all creation as our guide.
You’re gonna find that I’m not one to preach more than 10-12 minutes, so I’ll leave it here with what
I’ve shared. May God be with us and bless us all as we form the loving bonds necessary to walk this
journey of faith together in the future.
In Christian Love, Pastor Russ

Galen’s phone number (663-2899) published in the 05/20 news-sheet is incorrect. Correct number: 663-7899
Galen Miller loves “visitors” during
this time of total stay-at-home orders.
Here is how it works: You can see each other and talk via phone from a distance.
Galen lives in Colonial Vista just across from Wenatchee Brethren Baptist Church (entryway is on Okanogan).
Call his landline at 663-7899 * Be patient for him to answer as he moves slowly and takes out his hearing aid.
Speak slowly and clearly and reasonably loudly, asking him to go onto his balcony for a “chat” (keep your phone on).
Galen's balcony is on the third floor around to the right of the Colonial Vista front door.

Washington State has a Safe Start Four Phase Plan for re-opening. You can see the phases on-line at: Washington's Safe Start Phases
Safe Start Washington Plan Details
(Hard copies of this chart are being mailed to our members who do not have internet access.)
Every county needs to pass specific health markers and at this point, must maintain them for three weeks before applying to Olympia to enter the next phase of the plan. Chelan and Douglas counties are still in Phase 1 and have not met criteria for moving to Phase 2.
Meetings of more than 5 people cannot take place until Phase 3, but recommendations are that those
most vulnerable continue to stay at home until Phase 4. Because the Sunnyslope congregation is primarily made up of folks in the “vulnerable category,” we want to follow safe guidelines and anticipate that we will not meet in our building or in-person for quite some time. We will have weekly Zoom worship together, as well as a mid-week “Church Chit-Chat.” Pastor
Russ will be sharing the meditation/message most of those weeks. Zoom links will be sent to
you in a separate e-mail each week.
Phased reopening in Washington
Washington state's reopening plan has four phases,
starting with Phase 1 as the most restrictive, to Phase 4
being the least restrictive.
Phase 2 Under Review includes counties that have
applied and those whose applications are under review because of new outbreaks.

Special Offering June 28th
UCC Neighbors in Need & COB Global Missions
Our June Special Offering is split evenly between United Church of Christ Neighbors in Need and Church of the Brethren Global Mission and Service
is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of the funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry. Two-thirds of this
offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to UCC churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice.
Global Mission and Service ministries of the Church of the Brethren seek to
integrate faith and service as they challenge and equip Brethren to respond to human need and grow the church of Jesus throughout the world. Activities conducted in Global Mission are done in the context of responding to human need around the world, while
witnessing to God’s love
Even though our monthly Special Offering is scheduled for the last Sunday of each month,
feel free to submit your check at any time during the month
Please send your Special Offering to our treasurer:

PACKING FRIENDSHIP JUNE 2020 ~Update
We are Taking the Summer Off! Due to unforeseeable circumstances we are not delivering bags of food to students for the remainder of the school year. The Packing Friendship Kart still sits in the Fellowship Hall at the church – just in case you feel like taking something out for future use. We will resume our active participation in the Packing Friendship program in the fall. And we look forward to seeing how things may change between now and then! In the meantime, check out where and when you can pick up some free potatoes, apples, and onions courtesy of Chelan Fresh! You can drive into any of these locations and not even leave your car. They will bring it to you. This produce is the result of overabundance due to local restaurants/retailers not ordering as much during this pandemic. Be sure to send a thank you card to Chelan Fresh for donating to the people of the Wenatchee Valley!

Wenatchee for Immigrant Justice Update Matthew 25:35 New International Version (NIV)
35 For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink,
I was a stranger and you invited me in,
Thanks to the generosity of folks like you we have surpassed our goal of $25,000! One hundred percent of this hard-earned money is being used to help those community members who are struggling through this COVID 19 crisis. Currently we have helped over 117 families and individuals and we are still getting more and more referrals for help from our Latino community leaders. We will continue fund raising to help our immigrant community members who work hard to put food on our tables.
Here is one example of a family we (including Sunnyslope Church) has helped Every day we hear more stories like the ones above and I am so proud to be a part of a church that reaches out to help. If you would like to donate and have not done so yet, your help is still needed.
Simply write a check to Sunnyslope Church with “Wenatchee for Immigrant Justice” in the memo line and send to

S is a single mother caring for 2 sons and her 12-year-old grandson. One son is 21 and
developmentally delayed. His application for disability is still in process so he receives
only $197.00/month in state assistance. S has worked full time as a caregiver for the
elderly but because of the COVID pandemic and need for quarantine; she has been out of
work for over a month. She called us desperate for help with her $650/month rent, afraid
she would be evicted or reported to ICE if she did not pay. We were able to help her find
rental assistance and provide her with some funds to buy food.

FUTURE HAPPENINGS...
Virtual Choir Planned for Church of the Brethren
Annual Conference moderator Paul Mundey has announced plans for a denominational virtual choir. A webpage link is included below, with resources that will allow people from across the church to add their voice to a mass Church of the Brethren choir. Three hymns are projected to be a part of the overall project: “Blessed Assurance,” “I See a New World Coming,” and “Move in Our Midst.”
Mundey shares: “As we continue to explore new ways to connect with each other during the ongoing pandemic, the possibility of a denominational virtual choir holds great promise. Throughout history, song has united people of faith during times of crisis. To be included on the mailing list to receive updates about the denominational virtual choir and the link to the project webpage, email your name and contact information to [email protected].
