Above—an aerial pic taken by Thys and his drone. I am sure this pic could win any photographic competition. Thanks Thys. Our Sunbeam Club values its members, its families, its cars, its get
-togethers.
We are truly thankful for such an active Club. We planned a weekend-away in August. Read in next newsletter.

MAY—AUGUST 2019
Since our last newsletter we attended the Knysna show, had lots of fun at the Simola Hill Climb, had a lovely day building hamburgers at Johann and Anna’s house, and enjoyed delicious soup and bread at Thys and Tessa.
Our August event was a weekend away to Rawsonville, arranged by Anna Jooste. 22 members attended, making it probably the biggest attendance for a weekend away so far.
We were supposed to have had three Hillmans on this run; one was not ‘ready’ for the road, the other one did not make it up Du Toit’s Kloof Pass, the other one also out of action. Always another time!
Our new members, Chris and Lynn Vlok, also joined us for the Build-a-Burger in June, and since then haven’t missed a single event. Welcome to you and your beautiful British racing green Sunbeam Alpine.
We also had a get together at Johann and Anna’s house to do the last sorting out of Sunbeam parts. All the useable parts are now in the hangar, and the rest was sold as scrap metal. Nice, some more money for the club fund.
On a sad note, we said goodbye to Deryck Archer two months ago, a member of our club since the 80s. Deryck had Rootes agencies during his lifetime and there was nothing he didn’t know about a Sunbeam, Hillman, Humber, etc.
We hope we will still see Julia at our events.
Fanie’s mom also passed away a couple of weeks ago. Our sincere condolences to the family.
Regards from our Rootes-family

Operation clean-up!
This is not a task for the faint-hearted. After living in our Kenridge house, I had the task
to clean-up our house, after Doug passed away. But it had to be done. Lots of memories
and decision-making happen whilst doing just that. Now nearly a year later, I understand
the necessity of having gone through that daunting task.
A few weeks ago, Johann had to do something similar—his garages! And
once again our members came to assist. Thank you so much Gents. To
keep one’s Sunbeam on the road, it always requires maintenance, fixing-up,
re-spraying, new upholstery. On JohannAnna’s Bakkie is their Tiger, off to
Roger, soon to be on the road again.
Some of our members have had so say good-bye to children immigrating to
other countries. Fanie and Susan have recently had to say good-bye to
their daughter, Suzelle and son-in-law, who started their new married
life in Australia. Always so difficult for the parents. Hold your horses.
See you in Australia very soon.
To organize any event takes some effort. And we thank our committee
members, JohannAnna and ThysTessa involved with that
portfolio. For the Soup-and-Bread event ThysTessa were the coordinators,
and this is how Tessa did it, meticulously, graciously and like the perfect
hosts. Thanks so much to all who made the soups and puddings. Also for the
Build-a-Burger at JohannAnna’s house—such a hit!
Franco, with good health, and Isabella left for the UK end June, and
they have settled and are very happy.
At the Knysna Car Show in May we displayed our reds, all Alpines,
Tigers, as well as two Rapiers…
Happy Roote-ing and reading from this newsletter. Elene
Editor’s Ramblings
Like the band, this stands for Alpine Zonder Naam.
Early in 1986 I was introduced to Brenda’s friends who happened to be Christine and Clifford Howes, he being the chairman of the Sunbeam Sports Car Club and ‘gatherers’ at their house were members.
Having been a car freak and a member of car clubs since I was 16, I was ‘in my element’.
It transpired there was a Series I Alpine for sale for the princely sum of R2500 and before the sun could beam twice, I was the proud owner of the car which Brenda bought for me. How lucky was I to have “The Alpine”!
Over the ensuing years I replaced all the non-original bits with original parts digging them up from various sources including a Rapier in the Knysna Industrial area which provided an assortment.
I wonder whatever happened to that Rapier?
After many Club outings and by 1993 the car was looking very original but needed a re-spray and suspension sorting. Also being unsuitable for transporting our 3 year grand-daughter, we said goodbye to the Alpine, selling it to an American and his South African partner who wanted it for advertising their business. So hello to a four-door Morris Minor 1000.
Well, a good few years later at an AGM get-together at Doug Milne’s, and while Johann and others were doing a yellowtail braai complete with apricot jam, Doug called me to his quadruple garage and showed me a very sad
sight. It was “our Alpine” or at least, the remains thereof.
My Rootes and I—Glyn and Brenda
Turns out the American left it at a panel shop in town to have it re-sprayed and left it and the shop went ‘wheels-up’ and all the unclaimed vehicles were auctioned off. Doug heard of it and gathered all the parts he could find – must have been a strange panel shop as the overdrive gearbox had been removed and a non-overdrive one left lying with the car which was now minus its carburetors, manifolds and numerous other items. Nonetheless, I told Doug if he ever wanted to sell what he had, he must give me first option.
(I have a very good idea who it was who cannibalized “The Alpine”).
Long story short, I again became the owner in 2003 of all that Doug had salvaged. Luck stepped in at this point as our son Wayne wanted to buy an Alpine, (Our son-in-law, Andrew, already had one) and a club member wanted to sell his. Wayne bought his car and I bought the remains of an Alpine he had brought down from Durban. What a find, as there was everything I needed to bring “The Alpine” back to life.
So goodbye to Morris, so he could finance the rebuild.
September 2003 saw a brand new coat being applied to the bare shell as a start to its resurrection and new life, Rebirth of “The Alpine” now became “Phoenix”. The restoration taking place in my small single garage.
Many, many hours later, he was back on the road looking absolutely splendid.
Having acquired a 1958 Morris Minor Traveller (Woody) and a 1950 “Lo-Lite” MM Minor (Minty) I found the shuffling a bit of a problem to get a specific car out and one of the members, Cees van Eijk was looking for a car to buy and I parted with Phoenix. Well in 2012 Cees wanted to buy a Rapier so I purchased Phoenix back from him.
Further work and the addition of a hard-top with brand-new window we were back on the road again. In the meantime the Traveller was sold to finance an overseas trip to the children and a 1982 Mini Clubman 1275E joined the stables. Having enjoyed the glorified ‘go-cart’ for some months the decision was made to part with “Blu” and Minty followed not long after. And that left Phoenix on his own.
A fellow Crankhandle Club member had been on at me for some months about wanting Phoenix and just before another overseas trip I capitulated and Phoenix moved house to just up the road. Subsequently he went to pastures new, ‘up-country’, and lo and behold, returned to the Cape and looking for greener pastures at R135 000! That’s 54 times what Brenda paid 33 years ago.
After Phoenix and I parted company, Abie had a Rapier that needed a new owner and after one test drive “Frankie” became part of our family. “Frankie”? that’s another story….

Build-a-Burger—9th June 2019
This was in the heart of the winter, 9th June and despite the cold our brave-
heart Guys had shorts on for this event…
Anna and Johann prepared a feast of dishes for the Build-a-Burger event.
Schalk and James were responsible for the fires The men were involved with
the cars, naturally, while the fires were taken care of by James and Schalk.
The assortment of extras for the burgers were onions, mushrooms, sauces,
etc. Patties homemade! Anna and Tanya van Wyk prepared some beautiful
desserts. The group attending did not want to go home.
Below is Lorraine Wood, very content. Chris & Lynn Vlok, new members,
joined us for his first event.
Soup-and-Bread
On the 14th July 2019, we had our annual Soup-and-Bread
event in Stellenbosch, at ThysTessa’s house. No winter shall
pass without a Soup-and-Bread event!
We were nearly full house, and a variety of lovely soups
were offered and puddings. The camaraderie tangible.
Bill and Madelein had just returned from their trip down
‘memory lane’ - the roads that were travelled and less trav-
elled in South Africa when they were younger. Bill turned
80 in May, and celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary
(November) and this was their way of experiencing happy
memories. More to come in the next newsletter. Below—oil leaks. And the
winner was?

Malcolm and the Simola Hill Climb
The Simola Hill Climb—a master climb
Malcolm showed us his mettle once again. For the 5th year in a row, Malcolm won his Class. With the help of his pit crew, Kevin, Thys, Johann and André and with Malcolm’s driving expertise, he was a sure winner.
They all stayed in Sedgefield, courtesy Thys and Tessa. They attended the Knysna Car Show on Sunday, 28th April 2019 and spent the week visiting car collectors in the area. On Thursday the cars had to go for scruti-
neering, with the Classic Car Hill Climb on the Friday leaving the Sunbeam Club proud once again of his victory.

Dear Every One
My contribution to the Rootes Kitchen is one of our family’s favourites—Locro de Papa soup. I even tried my hand and served this soup at the recent Soup-and-Bread event at Thys and Tessa.
This recipe, Ecuadorian Potato and Cheese soup, was found in the PnPay Fresh Living edition of Augustus 2018.
I found this recipe when I was looking for something special as a first course at our ‘Vrolike Vreters’ Dinner Club. The ‘Vrolike Vreters’, if translated directly is the ‘Happy Glutonous’ Dinner Club...don’t be offended, and even if this sounds rude, this is a wonderful event amongst our family and friends.
The pic in the recipe magazine looked eye-catching and the ingredients matched my taste buds 100%. The ingredients were also not foreign and easy to find in the local grocer.
The other quality of this recipe—it has a bite! And for the winter you need a soup with a bite...
This soup became a sure hit, and my friends and family would always request this soup to be on the menu for our ‘Vrolike Vreters’ Dinner Club.
I also know that some of our Club members also have ‘hot taste buds and tongues’ and that it will go down well. To those who do not like it sooo hot, use less of the ‘hot’ ingredients.
Fanie and I have been members of this Club for about 5 years now, and we just slotted in easily in your company. This was not difficult. Thanks to all the members for making this Club quite unique.
This recipe is in Afrikaans and I am sure it will not refrain you from making this soup!
Happy eating…
