Election Results

Only three candidates submitted their names to run for the

Seattle Unit Board, so all three will be joining the board in

2016. These are returning board member Tim White and

new members Larry Holdren and Ann Romeo. You can read

more about them in their statements on page 10.

ment to [email protected] or give it to a unit

board member. If more than one person submits, there will

be an election at the October Sectional for the empty seat.

You must submit by October 7 to be considered.

There is also an opening on the District 19 Board. This body

is in charge of district-wide concerns, especially Regional

tournaments, North American Pairs, and Grand National

Teams. The board meets on the Monday of 2-3 regionals per

year. This position is by appointment of the Seattle board.

Yarington Round Robin

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a

memory no one can steal.”

Dick Yarington loved the Round Robin. It was the perfect

event for him. He got to play competitive bridge, eat good

food, drink great wine and socialize with friends while stay-

ing up late telling bridge stories. What’s more, for those

who aren’t aware, Dick’s team dominated the Round Robin

event for the past 10 years straight. And while he was always

the most humble and gracious of winners, make no mistake

about it, he captained a dynasty in this event that won’t like-

ly ever be matched.

In light of these achievements, and the degree to which we

all miss our dear friend and fierce table adversary, the Seat-

tle Unit has voted to henceforth name the Round Robin

event the “Yarington Round Robin” to pay tribute to his

contributions and the incredible winning streak he engi-

neered over the years. While it’s obviously no substitute for

having Dick at the table, conversing and laughing with us,

we hope it will help us remember him and his unmatched

love for the game for many years to come.

We meet once a week on Tuesday nights, and we pride ourselves on our hospitality (thanks, Ann Romeo!) and our friendliness. All games are stratified, so there is good competition for all levels. The latest results are available at:

Greetings. Please join us Sunday evenings for a friendly game of duplicate with a mix of college students, people returning to the game, and seasoned vets. We have supervised play at 5:15, the game starts at 6:00 and we’re done usually by 9:30, after which some of us head for a local bar (or for a frozen yogurt) with our hand rec-ords for a rousing postmortem.

If you need a partner, let me know. We usually match up about a third of the group. We will be closed on October 18 for the Seattle Sectional. Hope to see you soon.

Eastside is pretty excited about all our daily games,

and we hope to see you at one or more of them. Our limited games (held Monday morning, Tuesday evening, Wednesday evening, and Friday morning) are a huge suc-cess. The games are large games, and have a great group of players – join us.

We invite you to join our new Wednesday noon game. We serve lunch at 11:45 until game time at 12:15 – all for the same game price of $9.00. Move your sched-ule around and make some time to join us on Wednes-days. This game is a great success and getting larger every week!

Sadly we all have heard of Dick Yarington’s passing. Eastside is having a memorial game in Dick’s honor on October 24 at 1:00 pm. Please send us an email at [email protected] to make your reservations for this game and potluck.

Both October & November bring our GNT (Grand National Team) games. Plan to get your team together for games on October 25 and November 8, so you can qualify for the District GNT Finals and perhaps win a chance to play in the GNTs at a National Level.

October Ladies Night will be held on October 30 – we’re planning on a Halloween theme. Start thinking of something “ghoulish” to bring to the potluck! We always have such fun at this game, mark your calendar.

And finally, we have our annual Mary Ruth Blustein Memorial Game scheduled for November 14th . Mark you calendars, and be ready to sign up in the next few weeks. This game is always so popular, and it fills up fast.

Eastside Bridge Center is one of two full time bridge clubs in the greater Seattle area. We have games Monday through Saturday, most days two games, and at least one limited game per day (except Thursday). Please check our website for new games & events – as we keep our website updated on a daily basis.

Eastside wants to be your Bridge Club – we welcome any ideas, suggestions for a better game or bridge club. Please let us know your thoughts.

Remembering Dick Yarington

July 20 was a sad day for Seattle bridge when Dick Yarington died suddenly and unexpectedly. Dick was an icon of Seattle bridge, probably the most well known and well liked player from our area, amassing more than 17,000 masterpoints. I was always amazed at how many friends he had at the nationals. He was loved by all his friends for his charm, wit, and love of life and the game of bridge. He showed respect for novices and wouldn’t hesitate to explain something to them.

He was a very nice and very funny man who was knowledgeable about many subjects. As my grandson would say “He knew a lot of things about a lot of things”. This made him an incredible conversationalist who also told the funniest bridge stories of anyone. One of his best qualities was that he was also a great listener. If he had talked to you 6 months ago, he would remember your dog’s name, your kids’ names and where they went to school. A friend of ours from Vancouver once said after an hour talking to Dick, “He made me feel like the most fascinating person in the world”.

Dick and I were great friends and regular bridge part-ners for almost 40 years. His favorite event was the Grand National Teams, in which we represented D19 many times over the years. This year we had high hopes as we were playing with 3 of Vancouver’s finest players, Dan Jacob, Bryan Maksymetz, and Rock Shi-Yan.

Unfortunately Dick died just 2 weeks before the event in Chicago. To honor Dick we made him our non-playing captain. The Yarington team played truly inspired bridge for 5 days before losing in the final by 9 imps to a powerful team from Florida led by Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell. Every time we got behind, Rock would say “Come on guys, we have to win it for Dick”. Dick’s other favorite event was the Round Robin teams. He captained a team for the last 30 years, and the Yarington team is currently the 9 time defending champion, a feat that Dick took particular pride in. He leaves a big hole in our lives and my wife Sandy and I will miss him dearly, as will so many of his friends.

Bridge For Youth Day Camp Is 5 Years

Old/Young

Yes, we’re old because we’ve invested significant time and learned a lot by nurturing this project since 2011, when it was conceived by Larry Li. We’re young because we’re still growing — willing to learn, change, and improve what we know and how we do things. The Bridge for Youth team considers its 5th year of Bridge Day Camp a milestone. I’m sure most of us celebrated our milestone after camp by getting some sleep.

This baby has seen quite a growth spurt! In 2011, 4 of us doted over 3 campers – all Beginners. By 2014 we rejoiced at a total enrollment of 20 in 2 “Levels”! In July 2015, we were ecstatic when we reached 40 campers total! Of course, it was tough scrambling to accommo-date the last 10 who begged to register within 6 days of Camp- way after the deadline! (But I digress...) Of the 40 total, 24 enrolled in Beginners from July 6-10, while 16 registered for Beyond Beginners frpm July 13-17. That 16 included 6 who decided to continue because they en-joyed week one so much! After 2-3 days of camp, there was little shyness to be found among the campers. They certainly had fun. I’m also optimistic that a few of these bright little characters who are seriously hooked will be-come real threats to our Bridge scores one day, and noth-ing could make us more proud!

I want to say a very special thank you once again to our team of hard-working, talented volunteers: Alan Tes-ler (Teacher) with table coaches Mary Greeniaus, Sharon Erwin, Kay Adams, Cristal Nell, Melinda Westgate (and me) and Nick Tipton (Teacher) with table coaches Alan Hendrickson, Cristal Nell, David Taylor, and David Ro-selle. Not only did these folks share their knowledge and love of Bridge with our campers, but almost all were able to bend their schedules to commit to five full days of class! That commitment added significant continuity to the teaching process. And a big thank you Ann Romeo, who popped up often during the two weeks of camp with healthy and abundant snacks and drinks for all! Amazing people! Their time and dedication was a priceless gift to our camp and to nurturing the future of bridge!

SBU Board election

Although there will be no initial election for the board because only three candidates expressed interest, we are still printing their candidate statements so you can get to know them a little better. Thank them for serving the next time you see them! Remember that we still need one more board member — consider whether you can volunteer.

Ann Romeo: Bridge has given a lot to me: new friends, new skill sets, and a sense of accomplish-ment. It’s time for me to give something back. As a result, I announce my interest in running for the Seattle Unit Board.

I am a former SBU member, and have been off the board for 3 years. Meanwhile, I continue to serve as unit Hospitality Chair, and have worked hard to make our events the best they can be. I believe there is much more than can be done, however, espe-cially to help grow our unit membership, and improve our Non-Life Master events. If elected, I pledge to work to further improve both of these areas.

I am an average player, with deep connections to players in our unit with fewer than 1000 points, and I hope to rep-resent this viewpoint on the board. I thank you for your support.

Tim White:

I’m running for re-election to the Seattle Bridge Unit 446 Board of Directors. The past three years on the Board have been enlightening and fulfilling. While serving as Treas-urer, in addition to day-to-day and regulatory financial duties, I conducted analyses to aid Board decision making involving the Unit’s revenues & expenditures. I surveyed financial institutions and placed the Unit’s accounts with a firm offering better terms. I’m presently Chairman of the Board’s Tournament Sites Committee that is identifying tournament venues that will be more suitable and affordable, and offer greater geo-

graphic diversity. Running successful tournaments means having folks serve as tournament chair, as well as setting up & tearing down at the venue, and running errands; I enjoy pitching in on these activities. I hope to serve our bridge community for a second term and ask for your support.

Larry Holdren:

I would like the opportunity to serve on the Seattle Unit Board. I love to play bridge and I sincerely appreciate the hard work the the Board members do for us players. I feel like it is time for me to contribute my mental and physical energy to continue the fine activities of the Seattle Unit.

Thank you for considering my candidacy.
