TOURISM – GOOD OR BAD?
In most places, people welcome tourists. It is good to show other people how you live and what your country is like. But, tourism has its disadvantages too!
BEFORE
AFTER
Look at the ‘before and after’ pictures of a beautiful beach. Where did the garbage come from? How do you feel when you See the litter? Do you think you can do something about it?
Who do you think has thrown the rubbish out on the railway tracks?
The way a person thinks or feels about something is called his or her point of view or opinion.
In about 2 minutes, express your views on the topic:
Is tourism good for a country?
Come back and share the same with the class and your teacher.
A Window to the World of Wonders
If you were going to visit a place, you could look at a brochure to find out what you could see there. People who write travel brochures are trying to persuade you to visit. They don’t write a long list of facts. They write descriptions that are exciting and that make you want to go and see for yourself. They choose their adjectives and phrases very carefully.
Read the following travel brochures persuading people to visit these beaches.
DESIGNING A BROCHURE
Make a brochure for a place that you have visited during the holidays. Or you could choose your own
city -New Delhi. Think carefully about the language you would use to show people that it is something
they really should go and see.
Keep in mind the following while making the brochure:
•Attractiveness and organisation- It should be colourful, neat and well organised.
•Content accuracy- It should have the required information about the place.
•Writing mechanics–It should not have grammatical, punctuation or spelling errors.
•Graphics and pictures-It should have a good mix of text and related pictures.
Use the following steps:
Step 1 : Have an interesting picture and caption on the front page which makes your audience want to read the entire brochure
Step 2: Talk about the highlights of the place- like important places to visit etc.
Step 3: Choose the top features that will appeal to your target audience.
Step 4: Choose different colours and font size for key words or headlines so they stand out from your text.
Step 5: Choose eye catching photos that make the destination look attractive to the audiencewith 2-4 leaflets.
Step 6. Organise the brochure in the form of a booklet
Learn one of the following poems
THE ROAD NOT TAKEN
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.
-Robert Frost
And the day is loud with voices speaking,
Yet there isn't a train goes by all day
But I hear its whistle shrieking.
All night there isn't a train goes by,
Though the night is still for sleep and dreaming,
But I see its cinders red on the sky,
And hear its engine steaming.
My heart is warm with friends I make,
And better friends I'll not be knowing;
Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take,
No matter where it's going.
-Edna St. Vincent Millay
Holidays ahead! Break time! Travel Time!!
I. Your parents always plan your holidays. Give a break to your parents from planning a holiday this time. How about if you plan it yourself??
Let us combine everything with fun and learning!
PLAN A TRIP!!
The following is a rough estimation of the various costs involved in travelling from (i) Delhi to Jaipur and (ii) Delhi to Ajmer.
Travel
Cost:
Cost:
· 5000
· 750
· 5000
· 750
550 for going from any one visiting place to another.
You have to make a holiday plan for yourself. Here are some steps to help you think and plan your holiday:
a. Choose your destination. Do you want to go to Jaipur? Ajmer? Or both the places?
b. How many people are going?
c. Choose your mode of transportation with the above help.
d. Choose your accommodation. How long will you stay there? You will have to keep a note of the cost.
e. Also, keep a note of the amount that you spend on Food during your stay.
f. Choose your places of visit. Don’t forget to keep an account of the cost of visiting these places.
Make an estimated budget for your trip.
Now, let’s record every expense. Keep a separate record of the cost involved in:
a) Transportation to the city(s) that you choose to go to and also to the various places in those city(s)
b) Staying at the different hotels
c) Visiting the various events and attractions of your destination.
d) Eating out
(You should make a separate table for each of the above)
You may use the following tabular form as an example for your record keeping:
TRAVEL : COST
TOTAL COST OF TRANSPORTATION
A similar kind of table may be made for accommodation, eating out and for visiting different places.
At the end of your trip, calculate the total cost of your trip including the cost of transportation, accommodation, visits and food and drink. Show your calculations with statements.
Now, compare the actual cost of the trip with your estimated budget. Have you met your budget or have you crossed your budget?
Do all your recording and calculations on ruled sheets of paper and then file them neatly.
Also, decorate the cover of your file with Math symbols and tools.
II. Learn and revise the tables till 15.

SEARCHING FOR STRIPES!

Welcome to the Kanha National Park !
The students will have to
a) Prepare a project file.
Options for personal experiences can be included in a few pages.
b) Present the project to the class and speak about it for two minutes.
Overview
Kanha Tiger Reserve, is primarily a sal, bamboo and mixed deciduous jungle cover of 1,954 sq. km, and situated amongst the plateaux and valleys of the beautiful Maikal Hills in Central India. The park is today lauded as one of India’s premier Tiger Reserves, having an official number of 129 majestic Tigers under its protection. It is also the only place on earth where the Hard Ground Swamp Deer, or Barasingha – now numbering 450, can be found having survived extinction from its earlier figure of just 66 animals.
The Royal Bengal Tiger is getting extinct. The reasons vary from the dwindling forest cover, the use of tiger parts in Chinese medicine and poaching (killing tigers) to sell the skin or the carcass. We must refuse to buy products that harm tigers, increase the forest cover and of course stop the killing of tigers.
Step by Step
You will explore the park through your research work, learn about the flora and fauna in it and see how it has helped to save the tiger from extinction.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You will then participate in an Intra Class Green Speech Contest to celebrate Nature Conservation Day and International Tiger Day in July.
