Concrete Bowling Rules
Concrete Bowling combines design, engineering abilities, and your skills on the alley!
Judging of the competition will be based on durability, aesthetics, and bowling skills!
Participation
• Each team shall consist of 2 to 4 students.
• All participants must be registered attendees of the symposium.
• There shall be one team per bowling ball, and there may be more than one team (and
bowling ball) from one school.
• Each bowling ball is a separate entrant in the competition and must have a full team (of 2 to
4 students). No students may be on more than one team.
• If there is more than one team (ball) from a school, the teams (balls) shall be identified as
[Name of school] Team 1, [Name of School] Team 2, etc.
Bowling Rules
• Standard bowling rules will apply to the bowling portion of the competition.
• Each team will bowl 4 frames, for a maximum of 9 rolls (in case of a spare or strike in the last
frame).
• Standard bowling pins will be used, and the alley will be Masonite with wood wall gutters.
• In the case of a tie, the higher aesthetics score will break the tie.
Design and Construction Rules
• The bowling balls may not be less than 7 inches in diameter, nor greater than 9 inches in
diameter.
• The weight of the ball shall not exceed 18 pounds.
• The ball must be roughly spherical in shape.
• No resin or epoxy may be used.
• The major constituent of the ball (at least 60%) must be hydraulic (i.e., Portland) cement. No
pre-packaged or pre mixed cement may be used.
2020 ASCE Texas Student Symposium 7 Mailer 2
• Reinforcement, such as metallic or non-metallic reinforcing mesh, may be used. Then
reinforcement must not be seen in the ball in its original condition (i.e., before it is rolled the
first time). That is, no reinforcement can be exposed when the back is its original condition.
Exposure as a result of breakage during the competition is allowed.
• The mix design is at the discretion of the ball’s creators! Be creative: this is an engineering
competition!
Presentation
• Each team must submit a poster with dimensions no greater then 24” x 36” at the
competition
• The poster must identify
o School name (any commonly used name as long as it can not be confused with
another school at symposium)
o Mix design
o Construction materials and techniques
• The aesthetics of the bowling ball and posters will be judges by professionals. Just as beauty
is in the eye of the beholder, so is aesthetics. The judges’ determination may not be
disputed.
Scoring
• Durability (60 points)
o After each roll, the largest piece of the bowling ball (by weight) shall be used for the
next roll
o A damaged ball must be able to rill to the pins (no throwing). If the ball can not be
rolled, it is disqualified.

Aesthetics (20 points)
• Aesthetics of the ball and poster shall be judged at the beginning of the competition; the
specifics left to the discretion of each judge.
2020 ASCE Texas Student Symposium 8 Mailer 2
Bowling Score (120 points)
• Standard blowing rules will apply. Each bowling frame will have a maximum score of 30
points, for each possible total score of 120 points for all four frames.
2020 ASCE Texas Student Symposium 9 Mailer 2
Concrete Frisbee Rules
Competition Rules and Information
• Each school may have up to two teams.
• Each team must fabricate five Frisbees with the same mixture and design.
• Do not attempt to catch a thrown concrete Frisbee.
• Restrain dogs during this competition.
• Design and Construction Points
o The diameter of each Frisbee must be greater than 8 inches but no more than 12
inches.
o The maximum thickness of the Frisbee must not be greater than 2.5 inches.
o No pre-packed or pre-mixed concrete can be used, the Frisbee mixture must be at
least 60% hydraulic: Portland cement.
o Reinforcement (mesh) may be used for the Frisbee, but it must not be visible in the
finished Frisbee before it is thrown. Visible reinforcement before the Frisbee is
thrown will disqualify that Frisbee. In the event the Frisbee breaks after throwing, no
points will be deducted.
o The name of the school shall be shown on each Frisbee, in the same as shown on the
poster (see below), that is, either spelled out or abbreviated in the same way. The
name may be marked, painted, applied, or otherwise made visible on each Frisbee.
Presentation
• Each team must have a 24"×36" poster that includes:
o Name of school, if there are two teams from one school, one team’s Frisbees will be
marked {name of school}, TEAM 1; the other, {name of school}, TEAM 2.
Abbreviations may be used in the school name as long as there is no chance of
confusion
o Mix design, and
o The construction methods and materials used.
2020 ASCE Texas Student Symposium 10 Mailer 2
• Frisbee and poster aesthetics will be judged by professionals. Just as beauty is in the eye of
the beholder, so is aesthetics. The judge’s determination may not be disputed.
Scoring Criteria
• Durability (total 20 points: 5 points per Frisbee)
o Frisbee losing more than 20% if their weight will be disqualified
o Each Frisbee will be thrown once, and once only

Aesthetics (20 points)
• Will be judged before the Frisbee is thrown.
• Once Frisbee will be selected by the team to be used for the aesthetics score. This Frisbee
can not be used for the distance or accuracy scoring.
• A combination score both the Frisbee and the poster
• Frisbee and poster aesthetics will be judged by professionals. Just as beauty us in the eye of
the beholder, so is aesthetics. The judge’s determination may not be disputed.
Distance
• The distance thrown shall be measured from the standing line, measured so that the width
of the line is included in the distance, to be part of the largest piece of the Frisbee that is
nearest the standing line.
• Two Frisbees are selected for distance scoring. The two selected can not be used in the
aesthetics or accuracy scoring.
• After throwing, the largest piece of the Frisbee must come to rest within (or touching) the
boundaries of the throwing area. If the largest piece of the Frisbee is less than 80 % of its
pre-throw weight it is disqualified, and the distance score of zero is recorded for that Frisbee.
A Frisbee is considered touching a boundary if any part of the largest piece of the Frisbee is
over the boundary.

Accuracy
• Two Frisbees are selected for accuracy throwing. The two selected can not be used in the
aesthetics or distance scoring.
• After throwing, the largest piece if the Frisbee must come to rest within (or touching) the
boundary of the accuracy area. If the largest piece of the Frisbee id less than 80 % of its pre-
weight it is disqualified, and a distance score of zero is recorded for that Frisbee. A Frisbee is
considered touching a boundary if any part of the largest piece of the Frisbee is over the
boundary.

# $ !
• The distance from the center of the target to the Frisbee is measured to the largest piece of
the Frisbee that is nearest to the center of the accuracy area.
In case of tie, the aesthetics score will determine the winner.
