July 4 th Parade and Picnic Memories

Page 3: The String Bean Tom Thumb

Thanks to Anne Westphal of Ebby Halliday Realtors, the J.J.

Pearce Homeowners Association had another festive looking

July 4th holiday. Anne generously donated all of the little

American flags that lined the streets of our community.

Thanks, also, to the scouts and their families for all their

hard work distributing the flags to our front yards. Cub Scout

Pack 893, organized by Mack Paradowski and assisted by

Christian Bradford, and Girl Scout Troop 6651, organized by

Kelli Paradowski, dodged the rain Saturday morning July 1st

to deliver all 465 flags.

It was a lot of hard work, but who better to do the task than

energetic scouts.

Thank you Anne and Scouts for a job well done and

continuing the 30+ years of tradition!

Development

By Kristen Ceaser, VP of Development

Plenty of fun happenings across Richardson and in our own

back yard, as we anxiously await cooler weather!

Inclusive Fun!

The City of Richardson has partnered with the Richardson

East Rotary Club to update the Cottonwood Park playground

into an area that welcomes children of all physical abilities.

While Cottonwood playground is already scheduled for

replacement as part of the 2015 Bond Program, the Rotary Club

allowed them to expand the scope of the project. The additional

funds being raised in the “Make It Happen” campaign are well

underway, and many leaders are optimistic of reaching the goal!

The City and the Rotary Club are encouraging people give

both financially and through their time – as this inclusive

playground will be constructed as a “community build,” with

hands-on opportunities for citizens, corporations and non-

profits to participate. For more information, please visit

www.richardsoneastrotary.org

The Flying Biscuit Café

Halal Guys and Hot Dog Haus will welcome their newest

neighbor this fall, The Flying Biscuit Café. Located at 746 S.

Central Expressway at Spring Valley Road, this café is the first

Dallas location for the Atlanta-based chain.

Famous for its biscuits and grits, they first opened in 1993 and

have expanded to 14 locations serving their Southern-inspired

comfort food.

Customers say that part of the appeal is the wide variety of

dishes and the customer-friendly hours from breakfast through

dinner. Richardson will be the first location in this area to open,

but more are in the works.

For more information, please visit www.flyingbisquit.com.

Our New Neighbor – Café Gecko

Yes… they will have a patio! Café Gecko is soon to open in

the shopping complex near Sprouts. With locations in Addison

& Plano, Café Gecko has quickly become a fan favorite since

opening its doors in 1991.

Owner, Dennis Dial, and his team boast about the friendly and

interesting people who walk through their doors as they

specialize in serving unique and delicious “foods from sunny

latitudes.”

For more information and to look over the menu, please visit

www.cafegecko.net.

Fall is Right Around the Corner!

Mark your calendars for the City of Richardson’s Parks &

Recreation Department’s Pawtoberfest scheduled for

September 16th from 3-7:00pm at Huffines Park. Plenty of fun

for our four-legged friends and their owners, too!

The Cottonwood Art Festival is scheduled for October 7th &

8th. This semi-annual event has been a Richardson tradition for

over forty years, as they feature works from the nation’s top

visual artists. The festival also features local bands that perform

the best in rock, country, jazz, blues, swing and folk. The

ArtStop Children’s Area is another highlight ensuring there is

something for all ages.

Upcoming 9/11 Appreciation Days

By Wayne Stokes, VP of Safety

Our JJP HOA will again provide an appreciation dinner to all

three shifts for our firefighters in Station # 2, located at

Arapahoe and Waterview. The three dates are Saturday Sept

9th, Sunday Sept 10th, and Monday Sept 11th. Each dinner is

planned for 5:30 PM each day.

We are inviting you to visit the station to express appreciation.

This should not be a long visit each day as we do not want to be

intrusive, however, last year they gave a us a few minutes to

show us the equipment used by them to protect us!

As always, an emergency may call them out at any time! But

if schedules allow we can show our firefighters and EMTs our

appreciation.

Safety Update

By Wayne Stokes, VP Safety

Be Safe. Drive Smart.

TxDOT Back to School Driving Tips

The end of summer means millions of Texas children will

return to school. TxDOT reminds drivers to be extra cautious as

school zones become more active and be aware of school bus

safety.

Last year, 663 vehicle crashes occurred in school zones in

Texas, resulting in zero deaths and 21 serious injuries. August

and September of 2014 alone saw 107 crashes in school zones.

The most common factors contributing to these crashes were

driver inattention, failure to control speed and failure to yield

the right of way at stop signs.

Following these simple tips can help Texas children reach

school safely and help drivers avoid costly fines and tickets.

Tips for Driving in School Zones

Put away your cell phone. Cell phone use is banned in

active school zones, and violators face fines of up to $200

in school zones where signs are posted.

Always obey school zone speed limit signs. Remember,

traffic fines usually double in school zones.

Drop off and pick up your children in your school’s

designated areas, not the middle of the street.

Keep an eye on children gathered at bus stops.

Be alert for children who might dart across the street or

between vehicles on their way to school.

Tips for Children Walking or Biking to School

Always cross at intersections and designated crosswalks.

Look left, right and then left again before proceeding.

Look for traffic when stepping off a bus or from

behind parked cars.

Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the

street.

Always obey crossing guards

Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.

JULY 25, 2017 MINUTES

JJPHOA BOARD MEETING

On Tuesday July 25, 2017 Jeff Griffin called the JJPHOA

Board meeting to order at 7:15pm at the office of Shlomo

Friman located at 720 W. Arapaho Rd. Richardson, Texas.

Those in attendance were: Jeff Griffin, Wayne Stokes, Greg

Immel and Sue Caldwell. There were no visitors.

OLD BUSINESS:

Committee Reports:

Membership: Brandi Kessels reported by email that she

would coordinate NNO with the Block Captains and, also,

deliver to them the Sonny Bryan’s coupons for them to give to

members on their street who joined the HOA by January 31,

2017. She said that she would write an article for the newsletter

to recognize the Block Captains, listing who they are and their

responsibilities.

Beautification: Whit Hyde reported by email that

Calloway’s would replace the stolen Yard of the Month winner

sign so that there would be two Calloway’s YOM winners in

August. At the JJPHOA Park, weeds in the pathways continue

to be a problem and would continue to be until additional

crushed granite is added to the pathways, possibly this winter.

Also, at the Park the 200-foot flex hose that is buried

underground is broken and may be replaced at a later date for

approximately $30.

President’s Report: Jeff Griffin said that he is enrolled in

the Richardson Chamber of Commerce’s “Leadership

Richardson” class of 2017-2018. His employer, Siemens, will

be paying the $1,350 cost for the class plus allowing him time

off to participate.

Safety: Wayne Stokes reported that safety is good and that

JJPHOA had no crime this past month. He reminded the Board

that the kick-off dinner for NNO would be August 1st at the

Civic Center and to RSVP if going to attend. Wayne said that

he writes articles for the newsletter pertaining to seasonal

importance, such as pool and outdoor safety during the summer.

He added that the City of Richardson encourages video

surveillance by homeowners to help deter crime and for the

homeowners to register their video information with the city.

Newsletter: The deadline for September Newsletter articles

is August 4th with a delivery date of September 2nd and 3rd.

Treasurer: Greg Immel presented a statement of July 4th

expenses and donations to date that showed a net profit of

$388.50 to be carried forward for July 4th 2018. Also noted was

a free golf cart rental credit for 2018 by Dallas Golf. Greg said

that JJPHOA account had an ending July balance of

$17,571.42.

Hard Copy Directory: Jeff reminded the Board of his goal

to have a hard copy of the directory printed and delivered by the

end of August. He also would like the Board to vote in the

future on whether to print a hard copy directory every two years.

NEW BUSINESS:

Tailgate in the Park: Jeff proposed that JJPHOA join

JJPearce Athletic Booster Club for a tailgate party in our

JJPHOA Park on Thursday, September 7, 2017 from 4:30-

5:30pm before the JV football team’s first home game. Varsity

football players and cheerleaders would join us and possibly

several other HOA’s for hot dogs, music and games for the kids.

The Board needs to approve this event.

NNO: National Night Out will be Tuesday, October 3rd at

various locations throughout JJPHOA. Each Block Captain is

asked to host or find a host for their block party and to register

it with the city in order to have police officers visit their party

and pick up donated canned goods for Network. Greg Immel

asked that Block Captains submit their expense receipts to him

in order to be reimbursed up to $50 for their party. Some of the

board members may visit parties other than their own.

AGM: The Board discussed the possibility of moving the

Annual General Meeting to January to coincide with the new

membership drive months of January, February, and March for

2018. Also, they discussed ideas for activities before the AGM

meeting and various speakers that would be interesting and

responsive to the membership’s needs.

BY-LAWS: The members of the Board present discussed

items in the By-Laws that they would like to see updated,

clarified, and changed. Therefore, Jeff asked each Board

member to email him their input of items they thought needed

to be looked at and possibly changed in the By-Laws.

Lack of Quorum: Since there was not a quorum of the Board

present, topics were discussed “only” and no decisions or votes

were made. The full Board will follow through with email votes

on issues discussed at this meeting such as: approval of June

27, 2017 minutes, how often the hard copy directory should be

printed, whether to hold a Tailgate in the Park event on

September 7th, and moving the AGM from September 2017 to

January 2018.

Jeff also asked the members of the Board to consider whether

they wanted to be considered for a Board position for 2018 and

if not, to notify the nominating committee made up of Bette

Hodges, Bart Ord and G. Scott Waddell of their decision.

The meeting adjourned at 8:43pm.

Approved the June 27, 2017 JJPHOA Board meeting minutes

Respectfully Submitted,

Sue Caldwell, Secretary, JJPHOA
