• Two-year initiative
• Broad community support
• Final guidelines ca 2008/2009
Example ongoing projects in PEER Lifelines
• Bridge model calibration for linear and nonlinear response (Stojadinovic)
• Seismic soil pressures on retaining structures (Sitar)
• Organizational decision processes for lifelines mitigation investment priorities (Meszaros)
State of California funding
• General Fund– PEER operations, including outreach
• Transportation Fund– Resources available for an
extended research program on transportation-related subjects.
NSF final review report
• Over the ten years, PEER has mobilized a formidable, multi-disciplinary, intellectual group and melded this into a powerful team with a common purpose. As a result, PEER has taken the emerging performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) concepts of the late 1990’s and has developed them into a practical integrated framework, supported by a wide portfolio of tools.
NSF final review report
• The PEER leadership team has been exemplary in guiding the Center to its success. This was evident in the strong esprit-de-corps amongst all PEER members and through the authoritative set of summary presentations. The latter seamlessly conveyed a coherent and readily understandable picture of what is a radical new paradigm for a notoriously conservative industry.
NSF final review report
• Follow-on funding commitments totaling $11.4m from the State of California, Caltrans, PG&E, the University of California and other stakeholders will underpin PEER’s longer term continuation. Its relationships with the California Seismic Safety Commission (CSSC) and with city governances should enable PEER to grow its influence on public policy and decision making.
