“It is hard to hide it any longer: our economy sucks!”

You get up at 7 A.M nice and early to go to your well paying job. You have confidence in your skills to keep this job for a living whether it is corporate or small business. But the hard truth is that your occupation is in danger and we’re living in a society where it is necessary to keep it.

It is hard to hide it any longer: our economy sucks! 2008’s job loss was a whopping 2.6 million. There was a loss of 524,000 in December alone. It has been the worst job loss since 1945, the end of the Great Depression. The unemployment rate in the U.S is at 7.2%.

2008 Year of the Pink Slip By Jeremy Tyler

In the year 2008 the economy has become very dreadful. Many Americans have had to cut down and learn to manage money. To many Americans it has become a fear that this recession will imitate the Great Depression of the 1920’s. The economy has affected families, grocery stores, retail stores, and has had a huge impact on job loss. With this in mind, there are a few jobs that you are most likely to be your career in a time as this. The top ten careers to have during a recession are: 1. Physicians 2. Energy 3. Education 4. Utilities 5. International Business 6. Public Safety 7. Funerals 8. Accounting 9. Federal Government 10. Pharmaceutical In a world like this people

This is depressing and amazing at the same time. How can a country that has a large stimulus of manufacturing be loosing industry jobs by the hundred thousands? Our balance of supply and demand has severely decreased due to other people loosing their jobs. It’s a vicious cycle. Over the past three months only a few industries have been mass hiring, including Government, education and health services. Since all those jobs require some sort of degree to be consider, the country has put it self in a rut.

To help deal with this problem; President Barack Obama has started

work on solutions. He plans to create a massive stimulus plan that will create and/or save 3 million jobs. A tax cut should put companies in a situation where they can pay their employees and be able to hire more people. Some economists believe that a stimulus plan won’t change anything and it will have the same effects that Bush tried previously. But it is for sure that the job loss will continue to increase with or without the government interference. We need help with this now or the country will sink in to the Atlantic and Pacific. We need our jobs!

will always become ill. This is because many don’t have insurance or money to help prevent sickness, which is why physicians are at the top of the list. Energy made number two because people will never just quit using facilities, they may cut down on water, heat, and light but they all have come a necessity. Education is third on the list. Youth will always continue to go to school and there are many adults chose to pick up with their education. Utilities are very similar to energy so for similar reasons there are job opportunities. International Business came at number five because not every country has a bad economy having a career in international business you are most likely still with

a job. Public Safety ranked sixth due to hard times and desperate people willing to do anything to make ends meet. Law Enforcement jobs are always guaranteed. Funeral homes are guaranteed to never go out of business, because everyone one day will pass away. Accounting came in eighth because as long as humans are still living and purchasing anything we are forever paying taxes. In ninth place comes Federal Government, it is most effective in times of a recession so a government job is always sure thing. In last place comes pharmaceutical. The prescription drug industry has been and will continue to boom with the health care industry.

The Ann Arbor Student Building Industry Program is for juniors and seniors only. You have to sign-up for this class, by asking your counselor about the class. This class allows the students to explore many different jobs that the program covers. Some of the jobs are construction to carpentry, plumbing to electricity. It also allows the students to do hands-on activities and to learn with their

We know you’re busy so we won’t consume too much of your time. Firstly, where were you employed before you worked at RAHS? “The OBGYN clinic and the University of Michigan”. What was your reason for leaving, and then coming to RAHS? She looks on with a smile, “ I was looking for something different. Definitely.” One question that we personally have been wondering since you started here at Stone, what exactly is your job title? Shajaun releases a quick giggle, “I’m a Medical

hands. This program gives the students the option to earn collage credits while in the high school program. The Home Building covers laying the foundation down, putting the floors in and the walls up. We install doors and all the windows. Also we put the roof on the house and shingled it too. The house will have a finished basement and there will be siding on the house too. There

also will be a deck in the back yard; we also put in the front porch. This program is fun and allows you to do and learn many different fields of jobs and experience, from construction to many different carpentry jobs. In my opinion this program is better than a traditional classroom, because you are not in a classroom and your up and moving around while you are learning at the same time.

Assistant to be exact.” Interestingly enough, we’re curious about your schooling, Shajaun. Where did you attend college? “Well… I’m currently attending Wayne County Community College. I have been continuing my educational process there for two years, and I’m working on my degree in Nursing.” Interesting. Although we’re confident in the love that is showed to you, we know that working with young adults can be a unique and interesting experience, to say the least. What is it like for you, personally? “Well, I would want to make it clear that I don’t think of you all as children. I love working with young adults. I enjoy listening, connecting, and supporting the students. How satisfied are you career-wise? “I’d love to have more

financial freedom. I advise students to jump right into college fresh out of high school while still motivated, as opposed to taking a break in-between.” What are your plans for the future? Do you plan on having children or getting married? “I already have one child, a four-year-old daughter. Her name is Saniya. I have no plans to have more children; my world is crazy enough already. I would like to get married someday though.” Have you always had the intentions to become a nurse? Do you have anything that you would like to say just for the record? “Be successfu l at everyth ing you do and go for your goals. You can do anyth ing you set your mind to .”

“Cigarette smoke contains about 4,000 chemical compounds.”

I smoke, so what’s the BIG deal? By Abigail Kostrzewski

Smoking & Sleeping: Nicotine is a stimulant just like caffeine. It stimulates your body, keeping you from relaxing and falling asleep. If you can’t quit try the following suggestions: Don’t smoke four hours prior to sleeping, cut down on how much you smoke and maintain a healthy diet. Staying hydrated has been proven to help your body fight the effects of nicotine, thus helping you sleep better.

The Effects of Smoking:

Nicotine reaches the brain in about ten seconds after inhalation. Carbon Dioxide clings to hemoglobin in the red blood cells, which

prevents cells from carrying full loads of oxygen. Carcinogens found in tobacco cause important genes to grow abnormally or to produce too rapidly. Smokers generally have lower levels of antioxidants in their blood than nonsmokers do. Cigarette smoke contains about 4,000 chemical compounds. It can cause stroke, nicotine withdrawals, altered brain chemistry, anxiety about harm caused by smoking. It can cause your eyes to sting, blink more, and water up, as well as give you cataracts.

Smoking statistics: Half of long-term smokers will die from tobacco usage. Every

cigarette smoked takes off five minutes of life. About 1/3 of the male, adult population smokes. Smoking related diseases kills 1 in10 adults globally. By 2030 if current smoking trends continue every 1 in 6 smokers will die. Every eight seconds someone dies from tobacco use. About 15 billion cigarettes are sold daily which equals10 million every minute. About 80,000-100,000 youth start smoking everyday. Fifty percent of people who started smoking as teens go on to be adult smokers.

“School lunches, what’s with some of this food?”

Dear Alex, I am a good student but I have issues staying on task and focusing in class. Also, when it’s time for me to do my work, I always procrastinate. What should I do to help my problem? ~Good Student Dear Good Student, I have the same problem sometimes. Try organizing your workspace or doing some lighter work first just to get into the mood. If that doesn’t work, try asking for help from your teachers. ~Alex Dear Alex, I have a problem. My dogs bark too much. It makes me mad, so I hit them. The other day, I kicked my dog for barking at my friend, but

You know what really irks me? School lunches, what’s with some of this food? The pizza is hard and greasy, the tacos taste horrible, and don’t forget the spaghetti AND the meatloaf. The only thing that saves the lunches is the chicken sandwiches and cheeseburgers; even there they took away the cheap excuse for bacon. I remember when the pizza was from Dominos. If they are going to keep us at school for 7 hours a day 5 days a week 183

then my mom hit me. It’s driving me crazy. They need to go! What should I do? Should I hit them harder to make them stop? ~Dog Owner Dear Dog Owner, My suggestion is that you try and keep the dogs under control, not by hitting them, but by training them. If you can train them to not bark at people, then there should be no problem. My dog will bark at people in the street and people at the door, I just tell him to shut up. Your dog is trying to be protective of their territory, and a stranger is trespassing. You could have your friends come around enough times so the dog will get used to seeing them. Animals that are

abused tend to dislike others and are really hard to make friends with. ~Alex Dear Alex, I need a job. Do you know any places to check out? And are there any tips you have to get through an interview to get the job? ~OUTOFWORKIN09 Dear OUTOFWORKIN09, I don’t check around town for job postings much. But you could check the Classifieds in the newspaper. If you are going to an interview, then you should make yourself presentable and clean, show up on time for the interview, and show respect. ~Alex

days a year, they could at least give us real food for God’s sake. At the moment the best option for food is shelling out cash at a store. Other than that your best bet, is fast food. If you do fast food do it fast, because you can’t eat in class and 30 minutes disappears like Dunkin Donuts boxes at the police department. The closest fast food is probably Wendy’s and Burger King followed by Taco Bell, McDonald’s and big ten in that order

an even then you have no time to eat, so how’s this supposed to work? It seems the best option is to brown bag it. Even then you have to prepare it the night before and stick it somewhere that both prevents it from spoiling and you can find it in your tired scramble to make it to this palace on time. School lunches are not in all fairness all that bad. And it’s in no way Ms. Anita’s fault. But please some revision is necessary.

Same-Sex Marriage Why is it that religion and marriage somehow go together now? Marriage is a union between two individuals. Generally, in Western culture, marriage is legally binding. My real question is, why deny same-sex couples the right to marry their partner on basis of religion when America is not a theocracy? A theocracy is a government that is run on the beliefs of a religion or is run by religious leaders. America was founded on the belief that there should be religious freedoms; meaning that there could be no one set religion that the country must follow. In America, you can choose your religion or choose to not have one. In many early civilizations, same-sex unions were allowed. In Rome, same sex unions were common until Christian co-emperors Constantius II and Constans declared same-sex unions to be illegal in 342 C.E. Personally, I don't see how same-sex couples are going to ruin the "sanctity of marriage." So, do you think that the celebrity marriages that we hear of that last a week are all holy, simply because they are "one man, one woman?" I sure don't think so. I think that marriage should be saved for those that are in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together. Why should that be limited to heterosexual couples? Homosexuals are just as capable of emotions as heterosexuals. Love is not excluded from those emotions.

School I wake up in the morning and come to school just to sit and listen, but you hear words and I hear nothing. The teacher’s lecture and talk so much I feel like I’m stuck inside a Charlie brown cartoon the words are wom wom and the silence is cool. I bite my nails and wait for the bell. The Homework Load Not long ago the homework load, did Helen little harm. She walked to school with one notebook, tucked in her little arm. Homework increased until the girl, had no choice but to pack, binders and texts into a sack, she strapped onto her back. When her spine curved, and her back crooked, her shoulders apt to sag, so Helen took to pulling books, in a wheeled luggage bag. As Helen grew, homework did too, and fourth grade marked the start, of pushing homework to and fro, in a large shopping cart. Soon tractors towed her

homework load. Still Helen found no luck. Now forklifts hauled her homework home, and next a pick-up truck. But still the workload grew and grew, and the truck overran. Sixth grade saw Helen driving home, in a U-Haul moving van. Helen’s homework load reached its height, when school closed in the fall. For teachers assigned so much work, kids couldn't move at all.
