The StethoScoop Our theme for the year is health and wellness. The nursing profession as a whole is a very stressful job. We constantly work with people and put our patients before ourselves. This year, we want to highlight the importance of taking care of ourselves, and coping with our own stress so we are better prepared to care for our patients. This year we will be practicing stress management, deep breathing, aromatherapy, as well as hearing from many speakers in the field. NO ONE WILL RAIN ON OUR PARADE! Heads up that we will be having a float in the homecoming parade! We are still in the creative stage and are open to ideas of awesomeness! If creativity isn’t your thing, no worries! You can still participate by helping with set up, take down, or walking. An army of nursing students descending on Decorah!! Feel free to post on the Facebook page your thoughts, questions, and commentary on life. Alice Facente, a community Health Education nurse, received the Rotary Community Diversity award. Facente founded and coordinates an annual multicultural health fair. Monthly, she writes articles for the Norwich Magazine, discussing health care needs of various cultures. In addition, she serves of her local Chamber of Commerce Health Care Community where she advocates for improvement on cultural awareness and appreciation. This  health  nursing.      Coltan  Jacobson  ‘17  I  worked  at  a   small   school   in   rural  Mexico,  beginning  my  summer   research  project.  This  consisted  of  having  the  children  of  the  school  that  I  work  at  fill  out   food   journals,   and   then   breaking   their   intake   down   to   see   specific  deficiencies.  This  information  can  then  be  used  to  study  what  a  nurse  can  do  to  support  the  children,  supplying  them  with  more  nutritious  foods.  Come  to  my  senior  symposium  for  more!  (shameless  plug).    Kate  Knepprath  ‘17  This  summer  I  interned  at  Peak  View  Behavioral  Health  in  Colorado  Springs,  CO  as  a  Mental  Health  Tech.   Interested   in  psychiatric  nursing,   I  was  able  to  gain   experience  working  with  adolescent,  adult,  and   geriatric  patients  with  varying  psychiatric  disorders  including  bipolar,  multiple  personality,  grandeur  hallucinations,  depression,  and  anxiety.  Units  were  separated  by  age  as  well  as  level  of  functioning  and  acuity.  It  was  an  incredible  experience  to  work  with  a  fuller  spectrum  of  psychiatric  diagnoses.        Elise  Heiser  ‘17  This  summer  I  traveled  to  La  Merced,  Chanchamayo,  Peru  where  I  completed  a   one   month   health   fellowship   through   FIMRC.   FIMRC   is   an   organization  dedicated  to  the  improvement  of  healthcare  for  children  in  underdeveloped  countries  all  over  the  world.  I  was  completely  immersed  in  the  Latin  American  culture   and   had   many   unforgettable   experiences   during   my   time   in   Peru.  During   the   week,   we   led   health   outreach   campaigns   in   local   and   native  communities.  During  these  campaigns,  we  taught  basic  hygiene  and  first  aid  lessons,  ran  hypertension,  obesity,  and  diabetes  screenings,  and  completed  sexual  health  courses  (and  all  in  Spanish).  Because  of  this  trip,  my  perspective  of  nursing  is  forever  changed  and  I  discovered  a  new  found  interest  in  public  health  nursing.

Summer Spotlight

During  a  group  therapy  session,  a  volunteer  nurse  discusses  stress  management  with  participants.  Which  method  of  coping  is  the  nurse  most  likely  going  to  advocate?     A:  Most  people  cannot  control  their  stress.

B:  Stress  avoidance  is  an  important  component  of  life.

C:  One  can  control  their  reaction  to  stress.  D:  Significant  others  are  necessary  to  handle  stress.

See  our  website  for  the  answer!
