 Goals & Philosophy

The purpose of this unit is to provide for Tender, Loving Care based on sound Christian morals and values in a Residential Infant Care Unit for abandoned infants and infants in need of care.

Residential Infant Care Unit

The goal of the Residential Infant Care Center is to provide a home environment for these children where they can receive the tender, loving care that they require and at the same time, the very best shot at life! Our job is to support, care for, guide, protect, enrich, help and in general, provide the very best T.L.C. that we can for the child.

All of this while remembering that our philosophy is to provide –

Care until Independence.

All over our country, babies and infants lie in hospitals, abandoned and in need of tender, loving care. Very often, for long periods. The vital importance in the development of these children in this critical time, for contact and loving care is a cause for great concern.

Page 17: The Stephen Green Foundation Where it comes to children – We Care - Care until Independence – Proposed Residential Child Care Center (To be set up on a.

The Overall Education of Children & Young People

We are involved in the overall education of children to assist in the formation of true and good VALUES, MORALS and IDEALS based on Christian Principles, covering:

•Social Skills.

•Basic Life Skills.

•Good Health and Personal Hygiene.

•Sports, Arts and Crafts.

•Other Handicrafts.

•Leadership and Inter-relational Skills.

•Adolescent Preparation, Guidance and Education based on Abstinence before marriage.

•Preservation and Conservation of Natural Resources.

•Getting the most out of life.

•Music and other forms of art

All of this, using the therapeutic value of the natural, rural, farm/forest type environment.

Page 18: The Stephen Green Foundation Where it comes to children – We Care - Care until Independence – Proposed Residential Child Care Center (To be set up on a.

An Approach to the Education of the Children & Young People of the Center

For practical reasons, as well as to provide the very best form of education for the children of the center, it is proposed that the A.C.E. education system be implemented. The children will be schooled at the center by suitable trained personnel.

A technical education using the facilities at the Center will be available to children who would benefit by this.

Benefits

•A good, Christian education

•The children progress according to their ability.

•They can grow in environment free from the negative influences of a normal public school.

•Better use of the extra free time available through not having to travel to and from school.

•Substantial financial savings in both transport and schooling costs, including uniforms.

•Better control over the children in our care, their education and discipline.

•The very best, practical approach to the education of our special children.

Training

Over a period of 47 years of working with youngsters, the need to provide some form of training, or occupational therapy for older boys has often arisen. The reason for this is:

To keep them occupied, whilst sorting out other problems.

To teach them skills that will assist in their independence.

As a form of occupational therapy to help heal troubled young minds.

To provide a means of learning to ‘do their bit for the home.’

As a source of income for the Center and the families.

To assist with the maintenance on the farm and the Center.

To be achieved by the provision of the Engineering, Woodworking and Blacksmith workshops. We have an immediate need for these facilities, and the provision thereof will be of immense educational and therapeutic value.

Residential Home for Unmarried Mothers

 Goals and Philosophy:

The purpose of this unit is to provide Tender, Loving Care based on sound Christian morals and values in a Residential Home for Unmarried Teenage Mothers and their babies. Specifically aimed at catering for the needs of pregnant teenagers who land up in a Crisis Pregnancy situation without the support of their families or where for various reasons, the family refuses or is unable to provide the necessary support. The goal of this Residential Care Center is to provide a loving, caring and supportive home environment for these young girls where they can receive the tender, loving care that they require and at the same time supporting, councelling and guiding them through the pregnancy and assisting them to get the best shot at life for both themselves, and their babies. Whilst one of our aims is to guide those who wish to arrange for alternative care or adoption, the provision of guidance in baby and infant care will be a prime goal for young birthmothers in this center who intend raising the child themselves. Our job is to be there for them whilst assisting them to handle the crisis situation that they are in. It is important to understand that we will be caring for two lives in this instance and always remembering that our philosophy is to provide –

Care until Independence.

Goals and Philosophy:

The purpose of these units is to provide Tender, Loving Care based on sound Christian morals and values in a Residential Care Unit or home unit for children in need of care. Children very seldom land up in this situation due to any cause of their own. It is almost always due to circumstances beyond their control. The goal of the Residential Care Center is to provide a home environment for these children where they can receive the tender, loving care that they require and at the same time, the very best shot at life! Our job is to support, care for, guide, protect, educate, help and in general, provide the very best T.L.C. that we can for the child. Goals and Philosophy:

The purpose of this unit is to provide a base for older boys whose circumstances have resulted in them ‘dropping out’ or not being able to fit into a normal education system. Tender, Loving Care based on sound Christian morals and values in a more ’independent’ situation, whilst providing training in skills (including life skills). Children very seldom land up in this situation due to any cause of their own. It is almost always due to circumstances beyond their control. The goal of this unit is to provide a home environment for these children where they can receive the tender, loving care that they require and at the same time, the very best shot at life! Our specific aim is to give them guidance and a start where they can go out into the world and support themselves. All of this while remembering that our philosophy is to provide –

Residential Place of Safety

Goals and Philosophy: The purpose of these slides are to provide findings and an overview and guide to the requirements for the provision of Tender, Loving Care based on sound Christian morals and values in a Residential Place of Safety, particularly as these are all traumatized children. Specifically aimed at catering for the needs of short-term care for children in need thereof, in a Place of Safety, where THAT is the specific goal. The goal of this Residential Care Center is to provide a loving, caring and supportive home environment for these children where they can receive the tender, loving care that they require and at the same time supporting, councelling and guiding them through this traumatic period in their lives. In the past 15 or so years I have conducted various studies relating to Places of Safety, as well as having been involved in the placing of children in such an environment. One fact was very obvious – there simply aren’t sufficient facilities to cater for the need in South Africa, and it is extremely difficult and traumatic to place a child, often of necessity in a hurry, in such a facility. I have had to deal with desperate situations that were created by the unavailability of a place in the available Places of Safety in our country. Some of the main problems involved are as follows:

•There simply aren’t sufficient facilities available.

•Those that are, are often far from the child’s home, family and friends.

(Continued)

Page 25: The Stephen Green Foundation Where it comes to children – We Care - Care until Independence – Proposed Residential Child Care Center (To be set up on a.

•The social workers and Children’s Court presiding over the child are not able to retain easy contact and control if the child is placed in a home that is far away. Very often these people are the only link with security that the child has.

•Most of the Places of Safety in South Africa have a very large percentage of residents who have been placed there due to serious behavioral problems, including criminal offences and sexual misdemeanors. This is simply NOT the type of environment to place an abused or traumatized child. Experience has proved that many of these facilities and institutions abound with sexual harassment and abuse by the inmates themselves.

•A genuine Place of Safety, where the child can feel loved, safe and cared for is an essential need in the development of a Child Care Center by the Stephen Green Memorial Foundation.

Whereas some of the children requiring placement in a Place of Safety could well fit into, and be accommodated in one of our residential child care homes, most children in this position are fairly, or even severely traumatized. These children require a more specialized type of care. The basic principles of Tender, Loving Care still apply, but with a special form of empathy towards traumatized boys and girls. Love, patience, sensitivity and understanding are needed to provide for the needs of these wards whilst their lives are brought under some form of control, usually with intervention from the Children’s Court.

It should be born in mind that there is a fairly high degree of responsibility that goes with the care that we will provide in this unit, first and foremost, the responsibility to the children themselves.

It is important to understand that we will be caring for traumatized children for relatively short periods in this instance, and always remembering that our philosophy is to provide –

Care until Independence.
