Learning Portfolios

You will also soon get a Learning Portfolio. This is a glossy green folder which

you will keep and use through all your time at St. Marylebone. In here you’ll

gather evidence of your learning, goals you’ve reached, achievements you are

proud of. Like a new, empty wardrobe, it’s up to you how you fill it, what you

put in and what you take out.

Most important of all, however, you should create a personalised portfolio which

truly reflects you as a St Marylebone learner.

Finally … make the most of what you learn in PLTS-in-Performance and try to

see the links between what you learn in these lessons and what you do in other

subjects, in school and in life as a whole!

Year 7 will be studying a number of subjects and a brief outline is given

below.

ENGLISH English lessons aim to build your confidence in language through reading, writing, listening and speaking. You are introduced to a wide range of challenging and interesting texts from many periods and backgrounds. Year 7 pupils explore poetry, multi-cultural novels, autobiography, Shakespeare and Greek myths, while Year 8 pupils experience short stories, non-fiction, debating, Shakespeare, a modern novel and a writing project. We also ask you to maintain an individual spelling log of words you find difficult. The English Department organise frequent trips and special events to support your study. Poetry Day for Year 7 occurs in October including workshops, performance poetry and a guest writer. Book Clubs and the Debating Club run each term for all year groups. Trips to the Globe Theatre are part of the Shakespeare units. We really hope you enjoy reading – perhaps you could choose a book from our reading list (which is also on our website) so you can tell us what books you like best in September!

HISTORY In Year 7 we focus on British history from the Romans to the Medieval Period, investigating how government and society changed. It includes topics such as the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the murder of Julius Caesar, the Battle of Hastings, the changing role of the monarchy from William I to Henry VIII, the importance of the church and what life was like in Medieval towns and villages. We come across plenty of blood and gore, from Roman gladiators to the Battle of Agincourt to the seeping sores of the plague victims during the Black Death and the executions of rebels after the Peasants’ Rebellion. We also study the attitudes towards Islamic Civilisations and their contribution to European society, such as medicine and castles. In the Spring term we visit the Tower of London to explore how the use of the castle has changed over the centuries. The skills that we hope students develop alongside their knowledge and understanding of key features of the period, are an awareness of different interpretations of the past, how to question and use evidence and to gain a sense of chronology. We assess these skills this through a range of activities, including discussion, projects, extended writing and performing arts activities. IINNFFOORRMMAATTIIOONN aanndd

CCOOMMMMUUNNIICCAATTIIOONNSS TTEECCHHNNOOLLOOGGYY You will develop and improve your ICT skills, knowledge and understanding, knowing when and how to use ICT to help your work in your other subjects. SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS DEPARTMENT Students have a special education need if they have a learning difficulty that calls for special educational provision to be made for

them (DfES, 2001). Arrangements for provision of education for student s with special educational needs are achieved through the joint ef forts of all staff, as all teachers are teachers of students with special educ ational needs. The Objectives of the Special education needs Depar tment are as follows:

To identify, assess and support pupils with special educational needs. To ensure SEN students have access to a broad and balanced curriculum,

differentiated to meet individual needs. To liaise with support agencies with the goal of securing the best possible

provision for students. To develop and maintain a whole-school system of record keeping for

SEN students. To provide support and professional development for staff working with

SEN students. To wherever possible support inclusion of SEN students in mainstream

classes. To develop a whole school commitment to raising attainment for all

students. Jo Winstanley – Special Education Needs Coordinator

We encourage that all subjects are given equal attention and enthusiasm as the aim of the school is to equip each pupil with a n all-round education.

HOMEWORK DIARIES At the start of each Academic year, you will be issued with a Homework Diary. This diary should be carried by you at all times and should be kept neat and tidy. There will be a prize for the best-kept diary at th e end of the year . Through these diaries, pupils, parents and staff can monitor homework, detentions, rewards and other relevant information. The Homework Diary is very important as it is one of the most direct forms of communication between school and home. HOMEWORK Homework is set by all subjects and it is one of the most important ways of helping your learning: - it aids and develops your management of time - it requires self-discipline - it encourages independent study - it is an opportunity for you to extend your study and research. A homework timetable will be issued to you at the start of the Academic year. Homework should be completed to the best of your ability and handed in on time. It is monitored and included in assessment. We encourage parents to take an interest in, and to monitor the homework: it is a valuable introduction to the Secondary School curriculum.

EQUIPMENT You should make sure that you have the right equipment for each lesson. You must have pens, pencils, a ruler, eraser and pencil sharpener. For Maths &Science you require: 1) Geometry Set (pencil, rubber, sharpener, ruler, compass, protractor) 2) Scientific Calculator- Recommended model- Casio FX85 ES: £7. We have a House Point system and pupils are awarded a point for: - a particularly good piece of work - impressive effort - a particularly good deed The House Points will be recorded in your Homework Diary. You may receive a Merit Badge or Certificate at the end of a term. Individual departments also award certificates for outstanding achievements and letters may be sent home notifying your parents of your achievements. STUDENT VOICE

We hope that you are keen to contribute to the life of the school and the wider community and to make sure that your voice is heard. St Marylebone School Council Each tutor group elects a Form and a Vice Captain who represent their tutor group at the School Council for the entire year. The Council includes the Head Girl and House Captains from Yr13 and a representative from each tutor group (the Form or the Vice Captain) and meets every other week. We discuss a wide range of topics from how to improve the student planner or the school environment to policies on behaviour and planning whole school events. Reps also attend events such as the Anti Bullying Week and Westminster’s Children First Event. Many of the Council reps are also required to represent the school when we have visitors, for example this year the reps helped to guide visitors when our new building opened and met the Bishop of London at the blessing of the building. Student Teaching & Learning Group As a result of suggestions and concerns brought to the School Council the Teaching & Learning Group has been established this year. After gathering views on what teaching and learning styles suit different age groups the findings were presented by the students at two training sessions for the teachers. This was extremely successful and the group is planning to meet regularly again next year to further develop the discussion between teachers and students. Student School Travel Plan Group If you are keen to help with a campaign, then maybe this is the group for you! The group aims to increase awareness of our school travel plan and petition politicians, to ensure that travel to the school is safer through interviews, petitions and letter writing.

ATTENDANCEATTENDANCEATTENDANCEATTENDANCE

The school makes good attendance a high priority. P upils need to attend regularly to take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them by law. Irregular attendance leads to disadvan tage. We hope that all pupils will maintain attendance of 95% or above. ABSENCE When you return to school after an absence you must bring a note for your Form Tutor, explaining the specific reason for your absence ( in the case of illness we need to know the nature of the illness ) and the dates of the absence. Parents please note: - holidays should not be taken in term time - only the school can authorise an absence - absence notes must be signed by a parent/guardian . - Long term illness (3+ days) requires a note from a medical professional such as a GP or from a hospital LATE ARRIVAL If you arrive late after registration you must sign in the Late Book in the Main Office. Anyone arriving late without a note is required to attend Late Detention which is held on Fridays by the Head of Year.

WHERE TO GO FOR HELPWHERE TO GO FOR HELPWHERE TO GO FOR HELPWHERE TO GO FOR HELP

Changing schools can be a bit daunting. At St Marylebone we try to make sure that the transition is as smooth as possible but there may be times when there is a question you want to ask, something you are not sure of or secondary school suddenly becomes overwhelming. Sometimes there are unexpected events that you cannot prepare for a sudden death in the family; illness; friendship difficulties; feeling intimidated; experiencing violence; difficulties with homework etc. What can you do in any of these situations? TALK TO SOME ONE before the feelings get out of hand. People to talk to:

• Year 10 monitors • Form Tutors • Head of Year 7: Mrs Sanders • Assistant Head of Year 7: Mr Grieb • Sixth Form Mentors • Learning Mentors • The School Nurse • School Counsellors: Ms Munden • Psychotherapists: Mrs. Lale Arkhass • Connexions Worker • Head of Inclusion: Mrs. Ancock • Outside agencies

All of the above can help guide you to the best person for you. Don’t leave it until you are finding it difficult to cope. Parents are welcome to use the system too. No problem is too small or too large to manage with the right help. There is nothing you can bring that we won’t have heard before so don’t suffer in silence. A problem shared is a problem halved!
