EVENT: Sunday, March 30, 5:00pm: Dinner

A Note from Pastor Fred

Night Watch

Once in a while I find myself the last one to leave the church during the evening, after choir rehearsal or after a team meeting. At that time there is a vast quietness that surrounds me and I am aware of so many things, so many thoughts that I have heard throughout the years through the psalms. I sit in the back pew, the sanctuary back lit with the five lights above my head and view the aisle as it leads from the baptism font to the altar. It is as if that aisle is a road of the Christian life leading from one sacrament to the other. I am thinking about all the people who have walked this road who are of sacred memory. "Though I walk through the valley of death I shall not fear, for you are with me. I look over at the piano and organ sitting silently awaiting Pamela's hands to awaken them." Praise him with trumpets, praise him with harp and flutes!" Looking above the altar I stare at the cross and the way it seems to float in mid air above me and the tower that rises above my sight. " Let my prayer rise before you as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice." I close my eyes and see us gathered and facing each other at the baptism font for the brief order of confession and forgiveness. "Be merciful to

me oh God because of your constant love, because of your great mercy." The processional hymn starts and we open our mouths. "Sing a new song to the Lord; praise him in the assembly of the people!" I open my eyes and scan the entire sanctuary; aware of the rafters and walls that give us such great acoustics. "I was glad when they said to me, let us go up to the house of the Lord." Often it is only in silence the we can clearly hear the voices of those people who took the time to write down the thoughts of mind, heart and soul. In the quietness of Saint Luke at night they speak to me from the past to remind me why we build places of worship. Beautiful as the moment is, I know I cannot stay. The door locks behind me as I turn and look back one more time to see the red sanctuary light softly glowing; a silent witness to God's constant presence. "Your constant love is better than life itself, and so I will praise you." In peace, Pastor Fred

Recently, I took a course called, “Liturgy and

Music.” Here are some provocative ideas

from my reading.

Samuel Torvend suggests, “Celebrities now sing our national anthem for us….In

a culture that increasingly relies on professionals to sing for it, who but church

musicians will continue to cultivate communal song! Singing is the most natural,

portable and, possibly, the most democratic, the most egalitarian of art forms.

Assembly song…is inextricably bound up with the implicit criticism of any

hierarchy, -- religious, artistic, or political -- that attempts to marginalize or

silence the voice of the many.” The authors of Principles of Worship say it this

way: “a community remembers and sings for those who are absent or unable to

sing, including those who have been silenced by abuse, racism, sexism, homopho-

bia, mental illness, violence, tragedy or any form of exclusion.”

In the ELCA Statement on Word and Sacraments, it says that congregational song

gathers the whole people to proclaim God’s mercy. “The genius of the Lutheran

reform movement….was that it took elite music, previously performed for the

assembly by choirs and paid soloists, and placed it on the lips of all the baptized.

We have little if any evidence that excellence in music was lost. Rather we have

much evidence that an unprecedented flourishing of congregational song emerged

across Europe, inviting church musicians to let their arts serve a newly egalitarian

and a newly literate Christian assembly.”

Martin Luther says that the Holy Spirit honors music as an instrument for its

proper use since, as Scripture asserts, through music the Spirit’s gifts are instilled.

He also said that, “when each person has forgotten himself and poured out God’s

gift, he should conduct himself as if the neighbor’s weakness were his very own…

thus no member of the body serves itself, but that of the other.”

Torvend asks: does reliance on instrumental accompaniment or trained voices

actually diminish the congregation’s capacity to sing? Could we sing the Kyrie,

Gloria, Alleluia…etc. without accompaniment?

Paul Westermeyer says: “We offer our best, for one does not bring the worst in

the presence of a sovereign of the universe and of our sisters and brothers in

Christ for whom we are to show the highest respect. However, since we are

graced by God, we are freed to sing even when the best we bring is less than we

would like it to be - which, of course, it always is.” Words are the means by

which praise is articulated, and music is the means by which the articulation is

carried aloft. Song gives wing to the words.

St. Luke and Kroger Cares Fundraising Program

Did you know that you can help St. Luke simply by shopping at Kroger? Through the Kroger

Cares program, you can earn money for St. Luke simply by doing your regular shopping for

groceries, gas or prescriptions.

Kroger Cares Gift Cards cost $5.00 each and come loaded with $5.00. Before you go grocery

shopping, load your gift card with funds using whatever form of payment you would use at the

check-out; cash, debit card or credit card. Then, use the gift card to pay for your purchases at the

register or at the pump. All your regular benefits will still be available to you such as your Kroger

PLUS card and your Kroger Fuel Points.

You can preload your card either at the Customer Service Desk before you shop, or ask your cashier to "reload" your card in a separate

transaction BEFORE they begin ringing you up. Kroger will then credit St Luke’s account for 5% of the amount you load onto the gift

card. Your card is still valued at the ENTIRE amount you load it with. The 5% is paid by The Kroger Company. Please see our Kroger Cares

Fundraising Program Coordinators, Barbara Vonada and Marty Witthoefft, if you have questions and to purchase your Kroger Cares Gift

Card.

St. Luke’s Weather Policy and Worship Cancellation Information

We are now into the time of the year when we may have to deal with wintery weather and cancellations of worship services or fellowship events. In the event of inclement weather, St. Luke follows the same protocol of the public school systems in the area. Usually, if local schools are closed because of bad weather, St. Luke will be closed for all church activities and to all groups using our build-ing.

Pastor reserves the right to make other decisions concerning building closure. Please check our web site, www.stlukerichmond.org, for the most up to date information on any changes. All weather related cancellations and changes will be posted on the home page of the St. Luke web site and on WWBT, Channel 12’s website. Thank you.

Happy Birthday Dottie Thomas!

Her project is to help beautify our church grounds at spring cleanup by planting plants and helping with the clean-up. To raise funds for this, she will have a bake sale at our church on Sunday March 16, 2014. Please help her by buying her baked goods and/or making a donation. Thank you for your help and support.

Beginning Sunday, March 16, 2014, the St. Luke Stitchers (formerly the LWR

Quilt Group) will meet in the church fellowship hall from 1:00pm - 5:00pm.

The newly reorganized group will meet monthly as an opportunity for stitchers of all ages

and experience to come together for friendship and to share their enjoyment of their chosen

stitching craft. This group is open to all that have a love or passion for stitching whether

it's sewing, quilting, needlework, cross stitch, knitting, crocheting or needle-punch. If your

stitching craft isn't listed, then bring it in and introduce it to us!

The goal of the St. Luke Stitchers is to create an opportunity for all stitchers to enjoy the fellowship of their

fellow stitchers and for you to finally finish a project you've had hidden in your closet forever or to begin a new

project. We'll share ideas, do show-and-tell, participate in service projects, offer classes and there may even be

a few surprises in store for you! Provided are tables, cutting mats, cutters, rulers, ironing board, iron, scissors,

pins, lots of fabric, and maybe a rickety sewing machine or two. It's not fancy, but there's lots of work space

and never a shortage of conversation and laughter. Come relax and sew with us! Be a St. Luke Stitcher!

Here are two kick-off events prior to our first monthly meeting:

February 27 - March 2, 2014:

The Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival XXV located at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Please visit their

website for more information, www.quiltfest.com

March 7 - 9, 2014: The Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center Quilt Retreat. Barb has all ready registered to attend. She would

be happy to have some folks to attend with her. Please visit http://www.wcrc.info/upcoming.php for more

information.

The Sharing Ministry Thanks You

We thank you for your continued support of St. Luke’s Sharing Ministry. On January 27, Carol Bernard

and Doreen Dahl took six bags of clothing and shoes to the Good Samaritan Ministry. Your donations of

clothing, shoes, books and toys can placed in the Clothes Closet in the Youth Room. Food items can be

placed in the food box in the fellowship hall and will be delivered to the Central Virginia Food Bank.

Dear Rev. Marcoux and St. Luke Lutheran Church,

Love asks nothing in return. And through your support of FeedMore, you’ve

demonstrated that truly selfless love by helping so many people who will never

be able to say “thank you”. Children who will go to school with full tummies,

ready to learn. Families who will have one less worry in their lives. Seniors who

won’t have to choose between medicine and food.

That’s why, on their behalf, I’m reaching out to you to say “thanks”. Though it’s

just a simple gesture, I hope this little note lets you know how truly appreciated

you are. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Sincerely, Douglas H. Pick, CEO, FeedMore

RE: (U) letters of support/encouragement Thank you from Chaplain Jeff Jacobson 1/18/2014, UNCLASSIFIED Greetings Bob and Judy, Thank you very much for all the letters of encouragement. My apologies for this late update - I had an unexpected trip back to the US over Christmas and I'm just getting back to these important correspondences. I will send photos (via my ipod) of the letters as I was able to build a "wall of encouragement" with them in the upstairs hallway where the chaplain offices are here in Kabul - and where we also distribute the largess of the care packages that come our way. Hundreds if not thousands of soldiers have seen these letters as they are strategically located between all the candy and the only nice public bathrooms on the base :). These were great letters and I especially enjoyed the one Judy wrote regarding the planting of tomatoes - something I am now encouraged to pursue and looking forward to attempting upon my return home - which should begin in about 25 days or so. Blessings and again thank you to your "care" team. Chaplain Jeff Jacobson

Dear St. Luke Lutheran Church,

Thank you for your generous contribution in support of the Virginia Synod during the year of 2013. Through the years, the ministry we share has touched thousands of lives. Together, in years to come, we will be able to do far more than we ever imagined.

Thank you for your faithful committee as Virginia Lutheran Homes continues to value and serve the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of more than 550 seniors. Warmest Regards, Emily Rudolph, Director of Development

Dear Ms. Eggleston, February 12, 2014

During the bright and benevolent time of year, St. Luke Lutheran Church has fulfilled the wishes of our children and families. Thank you so much for your gift of hats and mittens for Christmas to the Season of Hope program at St. Joseph’s Villa. Your support helps provide a joyous and plentiful holiday season for families who would otherwise struggle to secure the most basic necessities-including food and clothing-this winter.

When our children and families experience the generosity of others who believe in them, they begin to believe in themselves. At St. Joseph's Villa they are able to overcome the chal-lenges of autism, mental illness, physical disabilities and homelessness to achieve brighter futures. Their journeys to lives of greater independence and hopefulness is made more promising by friends like you.

On behalf of our staff and the families served by St. Joseph's Villa, thank you for sharing your spirit of giving with us. We wish you a warm holiday season and a Happy New Year.

Gratefully, Brenda T. Savage Senior Administrative Assistant-Advancement

January 2014

Souper Bowl Sunday was February 2nd

Our Youth planned a Soup Lunch just for our members. We had a wonderful program and enjoyed a hot bowl of

soup. Our monetary donations for the lunch were used to feed the hungry in the Richmond area.

The Souper Bowl of Caring utilizes Super Bowl weekend in America to mobilize young people to fight hunger and

poverty in their local communities. Its vision is to transform Super Bowl weekend into America’s largest youth-led

weekend of giving and serving. 100% of the money and food is then given directly to local charities.
