We write to thank the parish for the outstanding responseto the Campaign for the Fourth Century and provide someearly results. The figures shared here reflect Campaignprogress as of this writing.
One accomplishment of note is that besides exceedingthe Campaign total goal of $8.0 million, we exceeded thegoal set for every objective where it was possible to doby December 31. Here is a rundown on the objectivesand where they stand:
The Organ FundCash or pledges exceed the goal by 12%. Thus theamount contracted with the organ builder is either in handor pledged over several years. Funds above thecontracted amount are needed for renovation within thebuilding to prepare for the installation of the new organ, and to insure its future care. Organ music in the churchis not only an everyday blessing, but also a central andlasting enhancement of our 1715 building, dedicated tothe greater glory of God. Bruton Parish continues towelcome contributions of any amount toward the organproject.
Church Interior WorkCash and pledges exceed the goal by 7%.
The Bruton Parish Church FoundationThe Foundation definitely benefited from its emphasis asa Campaign priority, exceeding its goal by 22%. Duringthe past two years, many people confirmed that theFoundation is named in their estate plan, by completingand returning a letter of intent. While stating intent insuch a letter is revocable, it serves to let Bruton Parishknow your wishes and to recognize you properly. TheCampaign helped reinforce the rationale for planned giftsand their potential impact on Bruton’s financial well-beingin the future. If there were no Endowment Fund, ourability to fund current operations, let alone significantprojects such as the organ, would be severely diminished.Planned giving is an excellent way to make a realdifference far into the future. We hope that others willjoin in taking this step.
Special ProjectsSpecial Projects incorporates gifts toward other initiatives, including Campaign discernment, renovation of theRectory, needlepoint kneelers and chair seats in thechurch, and creation of the Heritage Center. The amountgiven for these projects stands at 85% over its goal.Even while this is the smallest part of the campaign, thisdemonstrates parishioners’ commitment to importantprojects and improvements that keep Bruton vibrant.
Annual Giving 2016The Campaign set an ambitious goal of $1,725,000, whichwas reached and exceeded in December. Moreover, atyear-end, annual giving exceeded the previous year(2015) by $275,000. After meeting budget requirements,we established a much-needed maintenance reserve andmade a greater contribution to mission and outreach, thanks to this increase. But the need to increase themaintenance reserve and support our community areongoing, not simply one-year events.
Annual Giving 2017As pledges come in, we grow closer to our goal of$1,750,000. Just as we were able to meet the 2016 goal,we must reach the 2017 goal, and therefore start anupward trend, reversing the years-long pattern of flatgiving. Annual giving — the regular, reliable giving fromthe households of this congregation — is vital to Bruton’soperation and future.
In closing, successful completion of the Campaignwill bring about several things. It will strengthen theannual fund, for proper and timely maintenance of ourproperty and meaningful impact in our community thoughmission and outreach. It will increase assets of theFoundation, to assure the financial stability of our parishfor the future, continuing God’s work here and beyond. It will result in a new organ, to enhance our wonderfulmusic program and serve as an important asset for many, many years. Certainly, these are accomplishments weas a parish can look on with pride. Thank you!

What is Old is New:Spirituality ofIgnatius LoyolaThe Rev’d Chris Epperson
For our Lenten study, we will look at the wisdomof another age. You will remember last year adiscussion of the Benedictine approach to life. This year we will explore the approach ofanother monastic movement.
St. Ignatius of Loyola is the founder of theSociety of Jesus. The Jesuits, as they arecommonly cal led, formed in 1540. Thecommunity is defined by poverty, chastity andobedience as principles. We will explore all ofthis in greater detail in the class.
Ignatius developed a retreat to deepen thespiritual life. He drafted the Spiritual Exercisesto enable the faithful to follow Jesus. TheExercises, like any work, are shaped by thetimes in which they were created. The focus ofthis study will be exposure to the Exercises asconstructed by Ignatius, and to modernize themfor our devotion.
Come and hear about the life and witnessof Ignatius with an eye toward your own spiritualjourney. Join us in the Parish House onWednesdays, March 8, 15, 22 & 29, whenwe will gather at 6:30pm for our LentenSoup & Salad Supper and then begin ourLenten program at 7:15pm. Make this a partof your Lenten practice!

On behalf of myself, the Chanco Board of Directors, our staff, and the numerous camperswho are supported each year through scholarships, I want to say thank you! Each yearChanco on the James receives numerous requests from children who could not attendsummer camp without financial assistance.
This year we were blessed to be able to award scholarships to 46 individuals includingten boys from Boys' Home and seven children from ForKids homeless ministry. The impactof your investment in our ministry is highlighted by the words of Rachel Newnam, annualfund and special projects manager at ForKids:
"From sleepless nights spent in shelters to nights spent in cars and on the streets thesecampers have not had a fairy tale childhood. Each year our staff continue to be amazed atthe newfound confidence, focus and determination the kids return from camp with. I wantedto let you know that because of you all, this year's campers' lives have been changedforever."
Hearing statements like this and seeing how campers respond to time spent in Christiancommunity surrounded by His creation, I can say without hesitation that your generosity ismaking a difference here in the spiritual heart of southern Virginia!

Bill Bynum, Library Committee
Councils in the first four centuries of thedevelopment of the Christian church establishedthe theological dogma that Jesus was both fullyhuman and fully divine. When copies of theHoly Bible became generallyavailable in the 17th century,Christians went back to theGospels to try to find outmore about the exact natureof the Jesus of history, Jesusof Nazareth, the fully humanbeing who lived among us.The Gospels wonderfullyproclaim the Good News ofGod in Christ, as they werewritten to do, but theirinformation about the Jesusof history is dif f icult todiscern.
The search for thehistorical Jesus continues tothis day and has generatedin the intervening fourcenturies a vast collection ofliterature on the subject. The Hennage Library hasover 90 books written in thisgeneral area. If you areinterested in the search forthe historical Jesus, it isdaunting to choose a place to start. My personalpreference for a starting point is the book byMarcus Borg, Meeting Jesus Again for the FirstTime: The Historical Jesus and the Heart ofContemporary Faith.
Marcus Borg was the Hundere Distin-guished Professor of Religion and Culture atOregon State University until his retirement in2007. The 1992 annual meeting of the NorthernCalifornia Conference of the United Church ofChrist at Asilomar, California asked ProfessorBorg to lecture to them on the topic “MeetingJesus again for the first time.” Professor Borgdecided to structure his lectures around his ownpersonal spiritual quest to understand the lifeof Jesus. Professor Borg expanded the contentof his lectures into this book.
Professor Borg grew up in a ScandinavianLutheran family in North Dakota. His interestin the Christian tradition took him first to aLutheran college, then to study at the UnionTheological Seminary, and finally a PhD atOxford University. His view of the Christian lifeshifted gradually from believing in a prescribeddogma to an active relationship to the Spirit ofGod, a journey of spiritual transformation. Hecame to believe that the gospels are neitherdivine documents nor straightforward historicalrecords, but represent the developing traditionsof the early Christian movement. In his studyof Jesus, he began to understand fully thedistinction between the pre-Easter Jesus, thefully human Galilean of history, and the post-Easter Jesus, the Risen Christ. He grew into thebelief that the Christian life is about entering
The Search for the Historical Jesus
into a relationship with God, or the risen livingChrist, or the Spirit, rather than believing inGod or believing in the Bible or believing in theChristian tradition.
In this eloquent andinspiring book, ProfessorBorg describes an image ofthe Christ ian l i fe as arelationship with God, onewhich transforms us intomore compassionate beings, into the likeness of Christ, rather than just a life of faithor works.
What is inthe HennageLibrary? Our parish is blessed withThe Hennage L ibrary, asmall (1,400) but carefullychosen collection of faith-based materials available toeducate, enl ighten andentertain members of ourcongregation. The Library islocated in the lower level ofthe Parish House and is open

The nine altar rail kneelers, which were the firstphase of the Needlepoint project, have added to the beauty and comfort at ourcommunion rail.
For the seats in the Rector's pew, our rector, Chris Epperson, recommended weuse the symbols of the four apostles, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John on the chair seatcanvases. Each symbol is surrounded by a blue shaded damask background, color-coordinated with the background of the altar rail kneelers.

Daughters of the KingIntercessory PrayersPart of our rule of life as The Order of theDaughters of the King® is consistentintercessory prayer. Prayers are said for fourweeks and may be repeated. Anyone whowishes to have prayers said for them or forothers should fill out a blue request card at thechurch tower and drop it in the DOK prayer box.
This prayer is titled 'We Live Above Nature'and is from the book, "Thou, Dear God": Prayersthat Open Hearts and Minds, a collection of sixty-eight prayers by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We thank thee, O God, for the spiritual natureof man. We are in nature but we live abovenature. Help us never to let anybody or anycondition to pull us so low as to cause us to hate.Give us strength to love our enemies and to dogood to those who despitefully use us andpersecute us.
We thank thee for thy Church, founded uponthy Word, that challenges us to do more thansing and pray, but go out and work as though thevery answer to our prayers depended on us andnot upon thee.
Then, finally, help us to realize that man wascreated to shine like stars and live on through alleternity. Keep us, we pray, in perfect peace; helpus to walk together, pray together, sing together, and live together until that day when all God'schildren, Black, White, Red, and Yellow will rejoicein our common band of humanity in the kingdomof our Lord and of our God, we pray. Amen.
