MY FAMILY

I was born in Benoni but grew up in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. In 1958 my father was transferred back to Johannesburg. I met my late husband Dennis (from Port Elizabeth) while I was still at school, but we only married at St. Columba’s in    1965.    We had two children, Helen, lives in the UAE with her husband Joe and their daughter Julienne, 24 (sadly their eldest daughter Hayley 29, passed away last year and a grandson-in-law, Jonathan.    Peter (son) lives near Malalane, Mpumalanga with his wife Louise and their children Nicholas 22, Robyn 21 and Michael 16.    Sadly I don’t get to seeing them as often as I would like to!!!

Helen and Joe were married at St. Columba’s in 1989 and both their daughters were baptized here.    Dennis passed away in 1997, my Mum in 1998 and I had my �rst bout of cancer.    Margie and Alan were such a wonderful source of support which I needed during that di�cult time.   Once again in 2011 when my partner Bob passed away Stephen was there to help me weather the storm.    Both Chunky and Stephen were there once more in 2013 when I had colon cancer. How blessed I have been to have had all this support from these ministers and Margie and so many    wonderful friends at St. Columba’s.    Alistair and Jaco have also played their part in helping me through recent tough times. Thank you.  In 2003 I was ordained as an elder and currently am on the Pastoral Committee.  Over the years I have been to many churches around the country and in my mind St Columba’s is ‘simply the best’!

my life since joining in

1960. I belonged to the

Youth Group,

Badmington Club

(playing in the Church

Hall), joined Margie

with the �rst

Christmas Lunch and

was

part of the

entertainment

committee.  

I have managed to keep myself busy during this time, cleaning out cupboards, �les, going through Photos, gardening, reading without feeling guilty, listening to music and many phone calls and emails to family and friends and enjoying the wonderful Gauteng winter weather.  If I have learnt anything during this lockdown time it is that I’m so blessed to have an amazing family and so many wonderful friends  - life is    to be treasured.   Thank you Alistair and Jaco and the rest of the Team for the streamed services you have put together for all of us to enjoy during this time.

On Wednesday evening Jaco mentioned that while out doing your exercise this Sunday to please walk past the church and support the local businesses. Unfortunately due to the freezing weather, this has been cancelled.

It is me again  -- this time regarding Father’s Day.  Since we are still on Lock down, I hope to do the same as for Mother’s Day.  No Church service, no cards, no chocolates (good for the �gure) I will  make a donation in lieu of cards and

choccies to Fundisa – Winterton, near our  holiday home, in the Drakensberg. Terry who is responsible for running a number of creches there was thrilled

with the donation which is desperately needed to feed the children.  It is a case of no school, no food, so she has taken food parcels to the needy, who are most grateful.  There is so much poverty in so many areas that we are not aware of.

  So many of us are blessed with more than su�cient for our needs.  I wish all Fathers a wonderful relaxing day enjoying a braai and maybe some recently purchased fruit of the vine to go with it.
