For the fourth consecutive year, Chalmette High School is the home school of a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. Recent-ly, Meghan St. Angelo was recognized for this prestigious honor, granted to the nation’s most promising graduating seniors.

Over a million students take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or PSAT each year, allowing them to vie for millions of dollars in scholarship money, and St. Angelo, a CHS senior, was recently notified of her achievement.

An honor roll student at the top of her senior class with a 4.0125 grade point average, St. Angelo is a product of St. Ber-

nard Parish Public Schools, having attended elementary school at Joe Davies and middle school at Trist before becoming a CHS Owl. Kelli Watson, an Assistant Principal at CHS, said St. Angelo is

truly committed to academic success. “Meghan has taken all of the Advanced Placement courses that are available to her,” Watson said. “She has been able to maintain her grade point average while taking the most rigorous courses we offer. That is impressive.”

St. Angelo credits her teachers and family for their support and attributes her success on the PSAT to her ability to focus and her desire to do well. After graduation, she plans to attend Boston Uni-versity or Syracuse to pursue forensic science.

“I want to do forensics because science has always interested me and criminology was my original choice, so I combined the two,” she said.

In addition to her love of science, St. Angelo also has a passion for the performing arts, having starred as Ursula in the district’s summer production of The Little Mermaid. She said she is proud of the diverse roles she has played in the past and has truly enjoyed mentoring younger students.

St. Angelo said she is looking forward to college but leaving high school will be bittersweet.

“I’m looking forward to experiencing many new things, but I will miss the family I have come to know through theater and choir,” she said.

Superintendent Doris Voitier congratulated Meghan for her achievement and applauded the Chalmette High School adminis-tration and staff for their excellence in rigorous academic course-work.

“We are proud of Meghan and happy that she has continued Chalmette High School’s streak of National Merit Finalists,” Voitier said. “Four years is no fluke. We have an excellent academic pro-gram in our schools, preparing our best and brightest to compete on the national stage.”

who underscored that economic impact and community build-ing are core components of the charitable Foundation’s work.

“The Meraux Foundation's sponsorship was key for us to be able to act on the idea in the first place. Without the Mer-aux Foundation, this would not have happened. They were the first to see our vision, and they got it right away,” said Zalaznik. “Their initial sponsorship helped with follow-on sponsorships. When the Meraux Foundation came on board, everyone else took notice.”

Zalaznik said that he plans to make the Balloon Festival an annual event that will grow and improve each year.

“To come into this beautiful park, and see the setting…people just really liked it,” he said. “And we hope to do it for years.”

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office receives Traffic Safety Enforcement Grant

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Of-fice recently received a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission to conduct additional traffic safety enforce-ment activities.

The grant, issued in October, will allow the Sheriff’s Office to have deputies perform seat belt checks and DWI sobriety check-points throughout the year.

Sheriff James Pohlmann, who is a member of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, representing the 1st Congres-

sional District, feels grants such as this one are an important tool for the Sheriff’s Office.

"These types of programs promote safety on our state roads and highway systems,'' Sheriff Pohlmann said. "Too many people are needlessly killed or injured each year in traffic accidents."

The LHSC is responsible for developing and administering the state's traffic safety program by cooperating with the federal gov-ernment and other entities for the purpose of highway safety.

In addition to administering the state's highway safety grants program, the LHSC also prepares highway safety plans; studies, evaluates and prepares statistics regarding motor vehicle crashes, injuries, and deaths; and obtains federal funds for use within the state for highway safety purposes. Programs and projects are ad-ministered in accordance with uniform guidelines.
