Kalgoorlie Tour Twenty seven South Shore swimmers and their families, along with coach Chris, travelled to the Kalgoorlie Boulder Short Course Crusher over the middle weekend of the school holidays and had an amazing time. Everyone came away with at least one medal and a lot of fun was had on the Harry Potter train trip, panning for gold, at the superpit and other locations around Kalgoorlie. Thanks to Gail Della-Marta and Chantal Allchin for helping to organise the tour. Open Distance Championships We will run the 200 Breaststroke to complete the final leg of the Open Distance Championships at club on July 25. This event was originally scheduled for 16 May but had to be deferred due to an (unscheduled) pool closure. The rest of the July 25 program will remain the same. The next club night will be on Monday 18 July. See you then. Bogan Bingo Start tuning your air guitars - Bogan Bingo is coming on 17 September. Please pass any donations for our silent auction to Gail, Chantal or Deb, or bring them along to club. Coach’s Corner Now that I have really settled into the groove in our great club I am pleased to be able to contribute regularly to The Scccoop. The swimmers are all training well and we are all working hard on building the South Shore team. It was great to spend some time with the swimmers and families in Kalgoorlie over the weekend and these trips away reinforce the relationships in our club. It was amazing to see the amount of PBs achieved in the pool and the medals won. Moreover, it was fantastic to see the South Shore parents jump in and help the Kalgoorlie Piranha's to run a great meet. That is what we are about. Over the next phase of our Winter Training Program we will continue to focus on stroke correction, but we will gradually increase the workload. Some swimmers will experience challenging times in this phase. I encourage them to work through these challenges and discuss any issues they may encounter with their coach. “Nothing great was ever achieved without hard work!” Speaking of hard work, it was great to see a group of our top swimmers participating in our pilot gym sessions over the holidays. There is strength and mobility that can be developed on land that is much more challenging to achieve in the pool. Over this term we will endeavor to introduce land-training for all our squads ranging from 15 minute sessions for our younger swimmers to 45 minute sessions for our older more experienced swimmers. Now that the coaches are much more familiar with the abilities of the swimmers we will initiate a process of ongoing assessment. In the first and second week of term we will be running a series of test sets to establish a baseline assessment and provide some feedback to the swimmers and parents. This assessment and feedback will help us look at which squads need to be adjusted and where swimmers can be moved between squads to provide the best opportunities for long term athlete development (LTAD). Thanks for all your support and enthusiasm to date. We are all looking forward to another exciting term of swimming! Chris Twomey
