What’s New? The Springer Foundation has been fortunate to receive donations of stock over the years and we thought it would be useful to provide information about stock donations. If you are thinking about making a stock donation, it’s better to donate the actual stock rather than selling the stock and donating the proceeds. If you’ve owned the stock for more than one year, you may receive several federal tax benefits: • You are exempt from paying any capital gains

    taxes on the appreciation in value, which would be paid if the stock were sold first;

    • You are entitled to receive a charitable tax

donation based on the current fair market value of the stock regardless of the original cost to the donor. This benefit is available only if you itemize deductions and is subject to other general limitations.

If you would like to consider a stock donation, please contact the Springer Foundation Treasurer, Kelly Priestley, for more information. Last year, we launched the Comprehensive English Springer Health Survey. The survey was open through July 2017, and we received submissions for over 8,000 dogs! We are thrilled with this response and thank everyone that participated. We have now analyzed that data and the results are available on the Foundation website at www.englishspringerfoundation.org. The good news is that the breed is very healthy overall, with ear and skin problems reported most often. The data on deceased dogs showed that the largest percentage of deaths were due to cancer. We encourage you to consider sending a tissue

sample to the Cancer Tissue Bank that we maintain with the University of Missouri. Those samples will help future canine cancer researchers. The tissue collection and submission information is on the website. Following an AKC CHF organized roundtable discussion with leading researchers in PRA in dogs, we worked with CHF to move forward with additional PRA research. Dr. Gerald Bell agreed to work with us as a consultant and prepared a report on the current state of research and the incidence of PRA in the breed. That report is available on the website. In addition, CHF prepared a Request for Proposal (RFP) which was sent to the scientific community in late summer 2018. Proposals have undergone peer review, and we expect an announcement of the grants very soon.. The Foundation will fund up to $100,000 to take the next research steps. This project would not have been possible without the continued support of Springer owners. Thank you! Another new project, a Memorial Garden, was launched in early 2018 on the Foundation website. In addition to your annual year-end gifts, the Garden provides a special opportunity to memorialize people and dogs that are special to you. Instructions for making Memorial Garden donations are on the website if you are interested.

On Wednesday, Liz presented a Springer Sweet Shop Social. On Thursday, it was a Celebrating Companions and Champions Social. The Foundation sponsored Hospitality on Friday evening. 2018 National Specialty

    Douglas Johnson, NS Critique

I wanted to start by saying what a welcomed surprise this

entry was for me. As someone who has been critical of

the Americanization of your breed and the ease with

which your breed wins on a group and BIS level, this entry

was full of the breed specific qualities I seek in the English

Springer Spaniel. It is important to note that I am writing

this in January 2019 when your breed has already seen

three dogs win ALL BREED Best in Show awards and a

total of 5 different dogs in your breed have won Sporting

Group Firsts. This is a privilege that your breed holds

within the American dog show scene. It could also be a

curse, which is why I hold true to my original vision of

    your breed and reward accordingly.

Most of you will recall my article on your breed

from a number of years ago. “ To judge English Springers

today in our country you must start by acknowledging the

American type and the American style of presentation of

this breed. Over a half- century ago, some US breeders

made great efforts to create a specific look - a high heel

instead of a sensible shoe. They completely changed the

look of the breed, and US judges rewarded this change.

In the latter part of the century, breeders worked hard to

clean up some temperament and health issues, and now

this breed stands as one of America’s leading dog breeds.

There are several larger kennels in this breed today that

have created a look and a style identifiable as their own

vision of the breed and I respect that.

Where this discussion gets difficult is the

realization that the rest of the world, including the

country of origin, has no dogs that look like the ones we

are producing. This is a phenomenon that we don’t really

see in other sporting spaniel breeds. This isn’t just about

the markings; this is about the feel of the breed to the

hand. There have been changes in the constructions (i.e.

proportions; front and rear assembly) and muscling (flat

vs round) of the dogs today. Sadly, today they are so

different that around the globe they are referred to as

    “American type”.”

With this in mind, the first day of male class

judging was perhaps my most rewarding. Each class

winner fit into the shape and package I want in the

breed. Up on leg, solidly made with a full column of

bone to the foot; long level head planes and the soft

chiseled brow and expression that defines your breed.

Many of these qualities are not found on the vast

majority of all breed entrants in your breed. So, this was

a special entry filled with dogs that were clearly

purposely bred to reflect the written word of the

standard. It was an impressive lot.

The puppies had the bone and substance I would

expect for the breed. This is a requirement especially in

this age, as is leg length. If your puppies are never leggie

they will never be tall. A short-legged puppy will never

grow tall. The Elbow to ground should be long and with

ample oval bone. They should appear well up on leg and

never low or long. That outline will haunt a breeder.

Getting the correct silhouette is paramount and it starts

    in these classes.

There is no greater satisfaction as a judge to

walk into the winners class and see what you have done

fall into place. For me this was textbook consistency.

Each class winner appeared as same dog in a different

stage of his life. The 6-9 puppy was the same dog as the

American bred dog, as the bred by dog and as the Open

dog. All of the class winners shared the common outline

I use to define your breed, up on leg, off square and

    ROUND.

My winners dog became the most appealing of

everything for me. The correct outline, substantial in

bone and body, balanced and no one feature standing

out. The head, long and clean, his expression impossible

to deny. His condition superior with hard muscles and

shiny black coat and glistening white feathering. I would

be happy to own this dog. He has a great deal to offer.

RWD to the lovely 9-12 dog who could have been his son.

I was impressed with this class entry.

The bitch classes were also rewarding but not

nearly as consistent or deep in class quality as in the

males which I would say did come as a surprise. These

classes were more difficult to get the exact same make

and shape to the front of the line. The winners of each

class were quality animals but not always the same shape

and type. I did find many bitches of great interest.

Specifically, the open marked, import crossed bloodlines.

I applaud those efforts because that is certainly thinking

outside of the box. You folks are swimming upstream and

I for one will be watching your kennels develop. I found

your exhibits to be rounder in muscle, longer in head and

muzzle and darker in color. They are very interesting.

Spaniel experts will understand what you are doing and

    appreciate your work.

My winners bitch was frankly an easy choice.

This bitch could be a daughter of the winner’s dogs. They

certainly share all of the same outstanding qualities.

She is moderate throughout and light on her feet but

ample in body and done. Lovely feet and strong in all

directions. She is shows in rock hard condition. Her head

length and expression on point. She has eye brows and

appealing dark eyes, long muzzle and backskull. She is

correct in neck length and up on leg as she should be.

Lovely winner and super in character too.

RWB went to the lovely black and white bitch

from the 9-12 month class. I loved her overall shape and

balance. She has a super pretty head. I was pleased to

learn she also won the sweepstakes.

Breed classes where an honor to see so many

dogs of the shape and type I like entered. The males

were excellent and I found several of great interest.

When you judge a National it is really an exercise in

building a family of dogs for a breeding program. You

think about dogs you can use as sires and dogs you can

use to fix a common problem in the breed. Your winners

should represent those animals and contain the best of

the breed traits and perhaps more importantly they will

excel where the breed is maybe going off. The best

examples will prove that you can have it all in one

package. Those dogs are unique. Think about how

difficult it is to get all of those CORRECT traits in one dog.

It is not common and they only come around every so

    often. They are superior examples.

In my opinion, the champion bitches were more

consistent than the champion dogs. This does not

surprise me because the best of all of our breed’s is a

direct result of quality bitches. I am also a breeder and I

am on the hunt for great bitches. That day there were

three outstanding bitches. The BOB bitch, select and my

first award of merit winner. All of these bitches are what I

like in your breed. Each one with outstanding points but

in the end the winner out preformed the others on the

move. She actually out moved all of the entrants that

day. She was consistent in her leg usage, with a powerful

stride and effortless gait. She has an appealing head with

long level planes and a lovely eyebrow. Her size is

appealing and balanced with depth of body and correct

bone shape and mass. Her neck arched and graceful but

not weak or thin. She is correct in her back length and a

rounded croup so important in the breed. Moderately

made and free of exaggeration in all breed elements.

Additionally, lovely in breed character. Select bitch very

similar in type for me, shape and size. She is just a bit

  • Page 12

    2018 National Specialty

less of everything then the winner. BOS went to a dog

that looked to be the sire of my winners dog, even if not

related! It was uncanny for me to see him knowing that

my winners dogs was exactly what I was looking for. This

was is a classic type and what I have come to love about

your breed. The super beautiful eye, head and muzzle,

the rock hard back and good bone and feet. He is

moderate and balanced in all bends. He was everything I

needed. The rounded rear and tailset completely correct,

the clean transition of shoulder to topline on point. He is

the very picture of your breed in profile. I would certainly

breed these two animals together. Select dog and Best

Veteran is the sire of the winners’ dog come to find out.

This dog a clear stallion of the breed, with super bone

and substance, lovely from side and a powerful gate.

Some overall comments to keep in mind from my

prospective. Remember size does matter. This breed is

to stand tall, be of ample size and good bone. While, for

the most part, this entry did not reflect some of the more

common entries at an All-Breed show, we all know the

challenges of your breed: small, finer, low and long dogs

which contribute nothing to the breed long term other

then a cute champion of record. Their breeding value is

nothing. Be cautious of showing them just because you

can. Your breed should be the tallest spaniel in our group.

He should appear up on leg and never long or low to the

ground. Second point of concern is the flattening of the

croup. Like all spaniel breeds, with the one exception of

the American Cocker, the croup is rounded with a tail set

below the line of the back. Flattening this area is an

American trait and one that is hugely incorrect for the

breed. And finally, the one trait that I found the most

disturbing was the over angulated rears. This was not

new to me in your breed but it became glaringly

problematic. Specifically, to the bone change from the

knee to the hock. The bone from knee to hock is too

long in these examples. This is a forced change in

structure that needs to be watched and eliminated from

your breeding program. It is a weakening of the rear and

changes the whole rear function/construction. There

were many that stood too far back behind their rears

and not under them to support the dogs’ weight. Please

be mindful of this fault moving forward.

To conclude, thank you to all for the privilege of

judging your National Specialty show. It was rewarding

and a pleasure. I have renewed hope and faith in your

breed and the many breeders who are working against

fad to retain and continue the long traditions of your

standard. I am happy to say you have many excellent,

correct English Springer Spaniels around the country. I

am excited for the breeders I met and shared their vision

with me. I wish you luck and continued success as you

work to maintain your breed’s original intent as an all-

    purpose dynamic gundog.

    Sincerely,

    Douglas Johnson

I’d like to express my appreciation to the ESSFTA

membership for giving me the opportunity to judge the

2018 ESSFTA National Specialty Sweepstakes and Veteran

Sweepstakes. It was a privilege and pleasure to judge the

beautiful entry. The classes were filled with so many

promising youngsters, and I felt that many deserving

exhibits left the ring without ribbons, that were deserving

of praise. I was pleased with the overall soundness of the

dogs, and was pleasantly surprised with the

improvements in forechest and depth of chest in the

majority of the entry. I did feel that many of the young

dogs were straight in front angle, with short upper arm

length. Rears were good overall, with moderate angle.

Tailsets were good for the most part, but there were

some with incorrect high tail carriage that affected the

    dogs’ outlines on the move.

The veterans were stunning. I loved every single

one and appreciated the opportunity to judge them.

Their quality and condition was impressive and it was an

honor to be able to put my hands on them and assess

    their wonderful qualities.

Best in Sweepstakes – Tagalong’s Classic Silhouette from

    the 9-12 puppy bitch class.

This bitch impressed me with her kind, dark eye,

giving a gentle expression. She is feminine and well

balanced, with well laid shoulders and plenty of depth

and fill up front. She had very good bone and feet, as well

as good ribspring for her age, with a short strong loin.

Her topline was firm and she held it perfectly on the

move. Her front and rear angles matched well, with gave

her a nice ground covering stride. She was a beautiful,

    balanced package.

This promising young dog had beautiful balance

throughout, with nice bone and substance. He had a

pretty, well chiseled head with good proportions, and a

dark expressive eye. He moved soundly, with good

extension on the side and held his topline well, with a

correct tailset and carriage. He was not overdone in any

way, and presented himself as a moderate dog, in

    beautiful condition.

Best in Veteran Sweepstakes- GrCh Dartek’s Eldamar

Envision from the 11-13 yr bitch class

This bitch impressed me with her feminine, typey

headpiece, with nice parallel planes and a soft

expression. She was balanced front and rear with good

angles, which resulted in a nice, relaxed side gait with

good extension. Her topline and tailset were correct and

she presented a beautiful, correct outline on the move.

Best of Opposite Sex in Veteran Sweepstakes- GChS

ESSpecial Feeling Hott N Steamy from the 9-11 yr dog

    class

This handsome dog was balanced throughout,

with front and rear angles that matched well. He is a

higher stationed dog with good bone and feet, with a

hard topline that held firm on the move. He was

presented in beautiful condition. I loved his athleticism,

    remarkable for his age.

AKC statistics for the Spaniel Hunting Test program was not yet available in January. Overall input has been that participation has remained steady with regional differences still evident within the program participation. The addition of new breeds eligible for participation in the tests does not appear to have had an adverse effect, and in some regions has not only bolstered test numbers but also provided those from other breeds with a participation of the program and the work afield of the

English Springer Spaniel. Many thanks to Tim and Cathy Pullian for taking on Chairperson and Secretary duties for the ESSFTA Spaniel Hunting Test held in conjunction with the 2018 National Specialty. Tim and Cathy obtained excellent assistance from a strong group in the central Missouri area and everyone is so very grateful for their willingness to take on the task to help ensure a spaniel hunting test was available during the National Specialty week. efforts are so very much appreciated by a large number of individuals. A new Spaniel Hunting Test title was approved by the AKC in December 2019. The new title is Master Hunter Lifetime Achievement and would be designated after a dog’s name with the abbreviation MHS. A dog which has qualified at the Master Hunter level 12 or more times is eligible to be awarded the MHS title. A number following the MHS abbreviation will be included which indicates the

number of times a dogs has passed at the Master Hunter level. The title can be continually updated with a new number superseding the previous number of test passes for each subsequent time a dog may qualify at the Master Hunter level. A form from the AKC must be submitted to have the title added and subsequently updated as needed. Master level passes back to January 1, 2000 will count toward the title. Tracking Down Education, Information, Shopping and Fun on the World Wide Web

    by Sarah A. Ferrell

    Help!

    Being Prepared to Whelp

Several years ago, our family, with our four Springers, moved to Belgium. The first cultural difference we found to love about this very dog friendly country was that most neighborhoods have a dog training club. Many of these clubs offer a wide variety of canine classes almost every day of the week.

To our amazement, these dog clubs have clubhouses where dog people gather seven days and nights each week, sharing experiences and lessons learned about life with dogs. Children abound; socializing dogs to little hands and high voices. Older community members sit at tables having a beer, sharing tales of dogs who made their lives whole. Describing the many facets of producing well-made dogs, with sound temperaments, free of inherited diseases was foremost in conversations. Educating new breeders to understand how to match breeding pairs from super healthy stock, how to support optimal heath before and during pregnancy, and how to watch over and help, as needed, the arrival of the pups was often discussed..

When we returned to the US, where dog community centers like those in Belgium rarely exist, I missed hearing conversations of wise dog breeding experiences. If you

have a local kennel club, or a very active dog sport club, you are fortunate to have a community for gleaning dog breeding information. But for many dog fanciers looking for guidance about breeding, whelping and neonatal care, the search for information can be daunting, and often confusing.

For breeders who welcome guidance on safeguarding the health and happiness of their bitch and helping her bring new pups safely into the world, the new video,” Canine Reproduction, Whelping, and Puppy Intensive Care Seminar: Techniques for a Successful Breeding and Healthy Puppies”, by Myra Savant Harris, R.N. (Registered nurse, not Rally Novice), delivers over 8 hours of expert instruction and is worth every nickel you pay for it.

If you have wanted to attend a great seminar on whelping and care of new born pups, here’s your

opportunity. This video set will give you Harris’s decades of knowledge. You can put your feet up, with your dog in your lap, and watch her delightful presentation from your own comfortable home. While sharing many hours of whelping and puppy care advice, Savant is fun to watch. Obviously, her subject has never bored her. Driven to share techniques and interventions from decades of registered nurse experience in hospital maternity wards with moms and infants, and in her kennel beside a well-stocked whelping room, Harris’ instructions, supply lists, preparation check-lists and answers for whelping questions will make you ready to ease new pups into the world. Brimming with love for her subject, her video is more than educational, it is captivating.

Harris explores pre-breeding questions: how to best chose a bitch to breed; how to evaluate the best sperm, and whether breeding is better done artificially. This video will teach you more than you ever imagined you could learn about ovulation, sperm counts; volumes of fascinating breeding husbandry facts.

Harris gives breeders guidelines to judge when a bitch is actually in whelp; how long is too long when there is a pause in pups being delivered; how to recognize a bitch or pup who is dangerously dehydrated. Harris very clearly discusses the “three Muskateers of whelping: oxytocin, calcium and glucose”; teaching a breeder what each substance does during the whelping process. Viewers learn specific signs to weigh for when and why to call in veterinary treatment for a bitch or pup in distress. This video will walk you through the process of bringing healthy pups, from a healthy mom into the world. Extensive lists of supplies to make ready before labor begins; how to build a warming box just in case you need to transport new born pups to the vet. Step by step directions for assisting the bitch, if the need arises, for breech pups, stuck pups, dehydrated pups and moms, and many other worries that may be on your mind when you have bred your bitch. She also shares cautions and dispels advice that you may have heard that is not actually helpful.

After viewing this excellent video, I hoped to interview a Springer breeder who had attended Harris’ seminar. Since Harris is from the Pacific Northwest, I was fortunate to interview Springer breeder, Judi James, KPA-CTP (www.mydoggym.com) who has attended Harris’ seminar and read her books. From Salem, OR, James comments, “Great advice; especially geared to toy breeds who have a lot of whelping and weak puppy issues. “Having bred 25 litters, both small and larger breeds, James advises, for as little drama as possible when whelping a litter:” (care and preparation) starts way before whelping begins and continues throughout the pregnancy with optimal food and exercise to put bitch in great condition. Continue light exercise and feed lots of small meals. My girls like to keep training, so we do some fun things in short bursts for some high protein treats. Watch for signs of distress you'd see in any dog not doing well.” James most important tip is: “Relax and let your girl do her job.”

Along with her exceptional and entertaining video, Myra Savant Harris is also the author of the book, “Canine Reproduction and Whelping, A Dog Breeder’s Guide.
