THE NATHAN RYAN MUSICAL PROJECT Nathan Ryan is a folk-rock musician adults can enjoy with a message appropriate for children. In 2013, after the birth of his first child, Nathan shifted his musical focus and began to write songs for his son. From this shift, the Nathan Ryan musical project was
formed. With over 20 years experience, Nathan desires to use his talents to teach children important lessons, have fun, and share his love of music with people of all
ages. The goal of a Nathan Ryan show is to
not only engage and entertain young attendees, but also get the young at heart
involved. That means moms, dads, grandparents, teachers, friends,
and Rotarians get to join
in the fun too. Every Nathan Ryan show is fun,
energetic, and educational. We will definitely find out first hand when he joins
us at this year’s Rotary
Children’s Christmas Party
Thursday!
Well it was a bit somber at times last Thursday as we remembered our dear friend and fellow Rotarian Max Meeks. His

Funeral just a day removed, Tammy opened the meeting with some remarks about Max before we stood for the pledge. Kem McAllister had the day’s
invocation and she too had her own remarks about ‘ Mr. High Point’. Tammy then directed us to the screen at the front of the room to see this week’s Historical Moment which
featured a moving tribute to Max. Wil Elder introduced a the many visitors that were with us Thursday. John Anderson then came up for Special Recognitions joking that he was ‘25% of Max’ alluding to he
being one of the four persons that it took to replace Max doing Special Recognitions. Following a joke he dedicated to Max, John had a slew of birthdays and anniversaries to catch up on after the Thanksgiving holiday. (cont. on page 2)

ONE) Greg Suire took center stage to introduce our Student of the Month, Hayley Pierce, of Wesleyan Christian Academy. In the top three of her class, Haley has an impressive GPA of 5.06 . Along with National Honor Society, she has a long list of academic rec-ognitions as well as awards in music and student government. A true leader, she possess a myriad of volunteer experiences throughout the triad. Hayley told us that she plans to go to college and double major in biology and business with a minor in Spanish. Her ultimate goals is to become a dentist. In the meantime she hopes to go on mission trips like she did recently to Jamaica and possibly study abroad in Spain. UNC-CH is tops on her college list. Tammy recognized Sarah Clinard, an employee of James Whitley, who was the winner of the 50/50 raffle part of our recent BBQ. Sarah received a check from the club for $ 2,287.50, her half of the pot. Don Shaw promoted the Honor Card that benefits Open Door Ministries. They were on sale after our meeting and he advised us that the card’s creator, renowned artist Bill Man-gum, will speak at Rotary in two weeks. Doyle Early invited every-one to the ground breaking for the new ballpark Friday. The mid-day event sponsored by the City and Forward High Point will in-clude a ground breaking and the demolition of the first building that stands along the first base line at the new stadium. Events run from 11:30 to 1:30. Steve Ilderton had an invite of his own as he encouraged folks to come to the theater Friday evening for a con-cert benefitting Victory Junction Gang Camp. Bucky Covington, of American Idol Fame, will be the featured performer. Keeper of the Queen of Hearts Ken Esposito rushed in in a hurry carrying the $ 850 pot. After a quick draw of a number by our speaker and a quick cut of the deck by ticket holder Richard Kerr he rushed off with the deck and the $ 850 flashing Richard’s card, the Ace of Diamonds. Dave McCoy introduced our speaker, former Rotary International Director Ken Morgan. Ken, a member of the Chapel hill Rotary Club, cut Dave of mid intro and said that it was enough. He took the microphone announcing his talk was sixty minutes . . . . . but he knew we’d leave at one so he would hurry. His topic for the day was the Center for Conflict and Peace Resolution at UNC-CH and Duke. The joint program with the two prestigious universities is a masters degree level program where five foreign students each get full tuition, room, board, books, and housing at each of the two schools. The ten recipients are part of a larger group of Rotary Peace Fellows from around the globe. U.S. students, not eligible for Duke or Chapel Hill studies, can attend at places like University of Bradford in England and the University of Queen-sland in Australia. There is a center in Japan too. At Duke, stu-dents are part of the International Development Policy studies. At UNC, there is more flexibility and students participate in a variety of programs and fields like education, social work, and dentistry. It is hard though for folks with work experience to break away for two years to participate in this program. A 3 month short course is offered in Thailand. Interestingly, lots of law enforcement person-nel take advantage of that program and venue. Regular Rotary giving doesn’t pay for this program. $ 155 million dollars in desig-nated giving by Rotarians has endowed the program. Following the presentation of the speaker gift, we adjourned with the Four Way Test!
