meaningful volunteer opportunities with local non-profits. This year, three dozen participants and staff spent a Sunday afternoon at Dominican University packaging meals for local food pantries.

Over the past three years, UCP Seguin’s Community Connections program has spearheaded a local campaign for Share Your Soles, a local non-profit that collects gently used shoes for children and adults in need in developing countries. With the hard work of people with disabilities, hundreds of pairs of shoes have been collected and distributed.

In addition to the aforementioned efforts, individuals with disabilities supported by UCP Seguin have aided in a range of other efforts, such as the Chiditarod Food Drive, Meals on Wheels, No Hero Forgotten, Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry, Operation Care Package, Pacific Garden Mission, and The Moving Wall Vietnam War Memorial.

These volunteer programs provide participants with a feeling of giving back and helping those without food or shelter, a feeling of being a part of something bigger, and a chance to see themselves as full, contributing members of their communities.

In 2015 UCP Seguin secured a donated home through the Chase Community Revitalization Program (CCRP). This program provides donations of distressed properties to qualified nonprofits. The home, a two-bedroom condo at 1227 S. Harlem Avenue in Berwyn valued at $35,000, now serves as a “dream home” for two individuals with developmental disabilities.

Through the advocacy of UCP Seguin Board member and Chase official Paul Behrman, UCP Seguin successfully applied for and received this wonderful gift – the gift of a home for two women seeking to attain greater independence, integration into their community, and the chance to live life without limits. As Behrman states, “Knowing the importance of independent living for persons with special needs, I am proud to work for a firm and to serve on the Board of an organization where both are committed to generously supporting all members of the communities they serve.”

The two women – Toni Strickland and Gloria Hampton – couldn’t be more pleased with their new abode. As Toni reports, “I like having my own space. It’s easy from here to get to places I like to go, like volunteer sites and to where I can take photos.” Gloria enjoys the condo because “it is quiet” and near where she can do her “favorite thing – go shopping”. Lucky, Toni’s pet Chihuahua, is also feeling – understandably – very fortunate to have his new home.

This donation of a beautiful and comfortable condo is part of the significant contributions JPMorgan Chase has made to make a positive difference in the communities it serves. Through its Community Revitalization Program, Chase works to increase homeownership in areas where affordable housing is needed and in neighborhoods where revitalization is planned.  Chase provides affordable housing through collaborative partnerships with nonprofits and government municipalities with a primary goal of increasing homeownership among low-to-moderate income customers and turning properties into homes. Chase also works to provide suitable, affordable housing for individuals with unique hardships, including people with disabilities served through UCP Seguin like Toni and Gloria.

George Castaneda, unlike most of us, was continuously challenged just to get in or out of his Chicago home. e back door was too narrow and led to a very steep stairway. Because he was relegated to a wheelchair, he often had to call the re department for help, until they stopped coming. He would miss appointments and fail to get to the store. He simply could not do what needed to be done to make his life livable.

at’s when UCP Seguin’s Ramp Up Program stepped in. Ramp Up turned George’s window into a new back door and built him a ramp for access in and out of the house. George’s life was transformed…for the better.

“I am so grateful, appreciative and cannot express how thankful I am to be able to go into my home via the beautifully built ramp,” George wrote to John Voit, UCP Seguin’s President/CEO. “My entire family, friends, and I will be indebted for the rest of my lifetime. e folks at Ramp Up are wonderful, and have been so attentive, kind, knowledgeable and respectful.”

Beyond what Ramp Up accomplished for George, this crucial program also widens interior doorways and hallways, installs electric lifts, and sets up many other types of assistive technology, both inside and outside of the home, to help low-income people with disabilities gain greater access to their homes and communities. e program literally builds independence.

In the past year, thanks primarily to the generous support of the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development, Ramp Up’s equipment, building materials, and services were provided for free to more than 60 recipients. With additional funding, the program could provide ramps to more of the 240 people with disabilities still on its waiting list. A gift from you today could mean a Ramp Up to independence tomorrow.

UCP SEGUIN RECEIVES MAJOR DONATION HALF-MILLION DOLLAR GRANT BRINGS INFUSION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

RAMP UP BUILDS INDEPENDENCE UCP SEGUIN PROGRAM HELPS PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES GAIN ACCESS TO THEIR WORLD

In February UCP Seguin received notice of a major gift from a corporate giant – and a very generous giant at that. After a thorough, months-long review and selection process, Microsoft Corp. awarded UCP Seguin a $497,053 donation, in the form of much-needed software and related contributions for our “Computer Software Upgrade Project”. This momentous “cyber-grant” will significantly update and strengthen the organization’s information technology capacities agency-wide.

Over the past decade and a half Microsoft has allocated almost $1.1 million to UCP Seguin. This latest grant is by far the largest UCP Seguin has received from Microsoft, and it is the single largest corporate/foundation grant in the organization’s history. The positive result came after diligent efforts on the part of the UCP Seguin team as Microsoft vetted our proposal.

In the end it was clear that UCP Seguin is a worthy nonprofit deserving of this infusion of information technology capital. As UCP Seguin President and CEO John Voit states, “Microsoft is the gold standard in supporting community organizations like UCP Seguin. They truly do what they espouse – empower nonprofits to do more.”

George Castane da’s newly renovated home is just one of Ramp Up’s efforts to give people with disabilities access to the world.

4 UCP SEGUIN ANNUAL REPORT FY2015

UCP Seguin believes that all individuals, regardless of their ability, can benet from expressing themselves through the arts. rough UCP Seguin’s Arts and Music Enrichment oerings, people with disabilities create visual art, play instruments, sing songs, dance to music, engage in therapeutic movement, and otherwise fulll their artistic dreams.

Classes cover a wide array of artistic endeavors and related therapeutic activities, including but not limited to: painting, ceramics, African drumming through Oak Park’s Steckman School of Music, singing – including an annual UCP Seguin Idol completion, tai chi, and many other oerings. In some cases these activities mean paid jobs for program participants, as their creative expressions – such as hand-painted ceramics and seasonal greeting cards – become products for sale at the Seguin Gardens & Gifts retail center.

Not only are these activities fun and artistically fullling, they assist persons with disabilities in becoming well-rounded individuals, enhancing their opportunities for personal growth and social engagement.

UCP Seguin’s arts program is in part funded through the generosity of the Oak Park Area Arts Council, in partnership with the Villages of Oak Park, Forest Park and River Forest, and the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
