The Spirit Of 97th Beach Masters News 97thtranscobeachmasters.wordpress.com Issue 8 August 2013 Back To School By: Amanda Alley Soon our children will be going back to school, as well as of us grown-ups. As parents, we want to set our kids up for success in a new school year. This can be difficult in school environment that our kids are in. They not only have to deal with academics, but with bullies and the natural changes they grow into. We need to make sure that we sit down with our kids and talk to them about everything they may see, or deal with in school. They need to be as prepared as they can be. For many kids, academics can be difficult. Some catch on quickly and others don’t. Don’t be afraid to have your child tested for ADD and ADHD. I know that it’s hard to think our children may have one of these, but if you know what you are dealing with, you are more able to work with your child and get them the help they need. We had to put our child on medication just this year for ADD and impulse control disorder. Tutoring just wasn’t helping her classroom performance and she was easily distracted. The medication has since, helped her to focus on her work even in the crowded class rooms. If your child is just not wanting to do the work, try different incentives and rewards for good grades on their report cards. Also, find a good tutor or tutoring program. The public school system has free tutoring after school with transportation. Work with your kids as well. Show them you care about their academics and school life. Bullies are a whole different realm. Many of us dealt with them in school as well, but bullies have more resources today than when we were kids. Digital bulling has come as an addition to traditional bullying. Talk with your kids about what to do in these situations, and let them know that they can come to you for help as well. Some kids never tell anyone that they are being bullied, and that can lead to major problems. Make sure your kids know that they need to talk about their problems. Labor Day in United States

Labor Day is annually held on the first Monday of September. It was originally organized to celebrate various labor associations' strengths of and contributions to the United States economy. It is largely a day of rest in modern times. Many people mark Labor Day as the end of the summer season and a last chance to make trips or hold outdoor events.

What do people do? Labor Day is a day of rest or the last chance for many people to go on trips before the summer ends. For students, it is the last chance to organize parties before school starts again. In some neighborhoods, people organize fireworks displays, barbecues and public arts or sports events. The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend.

Traditionally, people did not wear white clothes, particularly shoes, after Labor day. However, this custom is slowly dying out. More and more people now wear white all year round, rather than just in the summer. Similarly, it is the custom to wear a straw cowboy hat from Memorial Day until Labor Day, then a felt one until Memorial Day comes around again.

May 1 is Lei Day in Hawaii, where celebrations include lei-making competitions, concerts, as well as giving and receiving leis to friends and family.

Public life Labor Day is a federal holiday. All Government offices, schools and organizations and many businesses are closed. Some public celebrations, such as fireworks displays, picnics and barbecues, are organized, but they are usually low key events. For many teams, it is the start of the football season. As it is the last chance for many people to take summer trips, there may be some congestion on highways and at airports. Public transit systems do not usually operate on their regular timetables.

Background The first Labor Day was held in 1882. Its origins stem from the desire of the Central Labor Union to create a holiday for workers. It became a federal holiday in 1894. It was originally intended that the day would be filled with a street parade to allow the public to appreciate the work of the trade and labor organizations. After the parade, a festival was to be held to amuse local workers and their families. In later years, prominent men and women held speeches. This is less common now, but is sometimes seen in election years. One of the reasons for choosing to celebrate this on the first Monday in September was to add a holiday in the long gap between Independence Day and Thanksgiving.
