OBJECTIVES
To explain the spatial frame work in its entirety.
To highlight the criteria for defining boundaries.
To analyse the different types of boundaries and how they are formulated .
To investigate the purpose of defining boundaries.
CONT’D
To examine the internal and external factors in defining a boundary.
To outline the difference between boundaries and limits.
To explain the relationship between the conceptual, temporal and spatial framework.
EXPLAINING THE SPATIAL FRAMEWORK
The Spatial Framework involves the definition of boundaries and the ways in which the resources are utilized.
Spatial Boundaries can be defined as geographically defined imaginary lines designed to divide one area of land from another.
It has been the practice of many countries over the years to divide social, environmental, political and economic responsibilities amongst various organizations.
CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING BOUNDARIES
PHYSICAL: Size/ Area in the following dimensions kilometer square (km²), hectares (ha), acres, miles square (m²)
ECONOMIC: Income Levels: such as Minimum
Wages in Jamaica are $4,070 per 40-hour week and $6,050 per week for industrial security guards, Lower Class Income Earner, Middle Class Income Earner, and Upper Class Income Earner.
SOCIAL: Economic Earnings, Ethnic Groups,
Cultural Groups(i.e. where someone comes from for example Smokeyvale versus Downtown Kingston.), Religious Groups
CRITERIA CONT’D POLITICAL: This is usually in the form of a map,
defining the different areas such as continents, countries, parishes, towns, cities, etc. It may also have to do with one’s political affiliations, for e.g. in Jamaica JLP and PNP (ED’S)
GEOGRAPHIC: Area, Physical features such as, water, land, vegetation, desert, weather, climate and other factors. All factors that define the landmass and the air surrounding it is usually defined as being geographic.
TOPOGRAPHY: Earth’s shape including: mountains, hillsides, plains, valleys, land contours, latitude, longitude, roadways, buildings, etc.
HOW DOES INCLINATION INFLUENCE THE FORMULATION OF BOUNDARIES?
Availability of Resources
Area Preference
Natural Reasons
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOUNDARIES?
Country
Electoral Divisions
Administrative
Special Areas
Developmental
CONT’D
Health
Education
Transportation
Post and Telecommunication etc.
WHAT ARE THE PURPOSES OF BOUNDARIES?
o To Give an Area or Region a sense of Identity.
o To aid in the distribution and redistribution of resources within a delineated area/region.
o It gives an area/region a level of control over the social, economic and ecological entities.
CONT’D
o Aids in land use classification
o Assist developmental planning
o Aids in Environmental Management
HOW DOES DEFINING A BOUNDARY AFFECTS EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL AREAS/REGIONS
Crime and violence
Accessibility and distribution of resource.
Environmental management
Pattern of Migration
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOUNDARIES AND LIMITS
HOW DOES THE TEMPORAL FRAMEWORK IMPACT THE SPATIAL?
Serves as a guide, which is used to control the rate of dynamics in development within a particular boundary.
A method adopted in order to predict the time span or duration of a development proposal.
IN WHAT WAY DOES THE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK IMPACT THE SPATIAL FRAMEWORK?
Influence the systematic process through which land spaces are delineated and utilized.
It facilitates conformity within a specific area/region.
Serves as a catalyst for dynamics in social, economic and ecological development within a designated continent, country, province etc.
CONT’D
Reduces natural aesthetics in patterns of growth and development of resources within a particular boundary
Influence the formulation of statutes, acts and or regulations which governs the utilization of resources located within an identified area/region
