How do you define a power couple?
India as a society was late in discovering the power of its couples. But when it came under the spotlight, the term was
on steroids with many vying for the title. Four years back, there was even a
reality TV show in India by the same name. That many of the participants in that show would only fit into the league of ‘wannabe’ power couples, is a different matter altogether.
There have been innumerable blogs and articles on how to spot the early signs of the blooming of power couples. However, power couples as a term, is now adequately commoditized.
Hence, we at the Mumbai-based Indian Institute of Human Brands (IIHB), spearheaded by advertising veteran Dr. Sandeep Goyal, who has published his thesis on the subject, ‘Celebrities as Human Brands’ , chose to refer to this shining set of celebrated couples as The Sparklers.
Our inaugural report on The Sparklers focuses on the aspect of getting maximum return on your marketing dollar by choosing the right power couple for your brand.

It is a no-brainer that the stakes in choosing the right brand ambassador were never much higher. If you are among the marketers who’s choosing multiple brand ambassadors, or star couples, then there is inadequate research to convincingly know if you have put your money on the right set of ambassadors.
It’s this yawning gap that The Sparklers report aims to address.
This report on couple brands addresses the issue across multiple facets. Who are the most powerful couple brands in India? Are they the usual suspects? Are there any hidden surprises? When you choose a star couple, do they pack double the punch? And if they fail, does your brand stand to lose twice as much?
The report calibrates India’s most recalled ‘The Sparklers’ over multiple attributes covering Image, Personality and Human factors. In the pages that follow we trace the evolution of The Sparklers in India. Who gets the maximum endorsements? Who figures higher in our trademarked scoring patterns? The Sparklers that could have been …
It was during the FIFA World Cup 2006 that David Beckham and Victoria Caroline Adams also known
as Posh Spice, were a toast of the celebrity circuit. With media coverage of the World Cup including the wives and girlfriends (WAGS, as it was called) of the stars, David and Victoria Beckham became the original power couple for Indian celebrities to take cues from.
Bollywood could actually have given India its own power couple(s) way way back in the 1960/1970s but the couples somehow did not have the sustaining power. When Dilip Kumar married Saira Banu, they could have been the first amongst India’s power couples. But Dilip Kumar’s career was by then almost over and Saira really wasn’t
If we trace the evolution of power couples, strangely the concept came into Indian conscience through the medium of sports (not Bol-lywood as many would want to believe). And it was not through cricket, a sport that’s heavily followed in India, but its lesser cousin, soccer.

an ‘A’ grader in her own independent right. Sunil Dutt and Nargis could have been a genuine power couple but then Nargis just renounced the movies after she married; and Sunil Dutt became an actor of repute, and then a respected politician only much later.
Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia could have worn the power couple crown in 1973, but their marriage was not a very successful or enduring one. When Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri tied the knot, Jaya was actually the better-known half of the couple. As Amitabh carved a dominant position in Indian cinema, Jaya however faded into domesticity, never letting the power couple tag become a reality.
When Indian cinema’s heart-throb Sharmila Tagore married the Indian captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, they together had just the right credentials to become a power couple: he was a right royal Nawab, and the youngest ever captain of the Indian cricket team and she was the first actress to have posed in a bikini, breaking the taboos of that time. But by the time the two were married in 1969, Pataudi had started to fade out from cricket. Also, as a couple, the two were very low-profile, preferring to stay away from the glare especially once Sharmila quit the movies for motherhood, and more.
The marriage of Dharmendra and Hema Malini could have given us a genuine power couple but post marriage they were hardly seen together in public. Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh were young, buzzy, successful and popular when they got married: all the right ingredients for a power alliance but the
marriage was very rocky in the initial years, never allowing them to build a public profile of togetherness. Rishi’s brother Randhir Kapoor too married actress Babita but frankly both of them were ‘B’ listers and in any case their marriage too kind of went bust over time. So no luck there.

Back to cricket. Thirteen years down the line, today in 2019, most Indian sports stars have their work cut out. According to researchers at the London School of Marketing, Cricket tops the list of sports that are most dependent on endorsements at 81 per cent. Tennis at 78 per cent and Golf at 75 per cent follow closely. While Indian sports stars might be great as individual performers, how well do they perform as a team (in this case, the team consists only of their better half ).
Cricket is beset with enough and more examples of those who did come with some promise of shine, but did not quite sparkle.
Sunil Gavaskar and wife Marshneil were pretty well known together as a couple when he was at his peak in the 70s. But she had no independent credentials, and did not really add to his persona as one of India’s finest cricketers.

earnings for many years, one cannot say that the better halves of Indian cricketers (with Virushka being one strong exception) added to their brand power in any ways.
While Dhoni and his wife Sakshi have been a part of Colgate’s latest version of Andar Se Strong campaign, it certainly does not take them any higher on the pecking order of ‘The Sparklers’. In fact, the role played by Sakshi could even be responsible for taking some sparkle away from MS Dhoni in cases like the Amrapali group.
In March 2019, Dhoni sued the promoters of real estate group Amrapali for non-payment of brand endorsement fees. However, in the Amrapali case, Dhoni’s involvement with the disgraced builder was not merely that of a brand ambassador, much as he may have claimed in media as part of his innocence act. Dhoni’s wife Sakshi was a director at Amrapali Mahi Developers Private Limited and this firm was involved in running a hospital and a charity in Dhoni’s home state Jharkhand. Sakshi remained a director of this entity well after Dhoni quit as Amrapali’s brand ambassador.
Mohd Azharuddin and Sangeeta Bijlani did hit the upper circuits for a while as a couple but his getting mired in the match-fixing controversy killed any possibilities of their becoming an aspirational power couple.
Another possibility for becoming a power couple could have been Harbhajan Singh and his actress wife, Geeta Basra. While Basra did have a career as an actress much before she dated and subsequently married Harbhajan

Singh, her career in films did not quite ever take off. Something similar could be said about Hazel Keech who married Yuvraj Singh and later adopted the name of Gurbasant Kaur. Or take the case of Sagarika Ghatge who married Zaheer Khan. Sagarika’s first film Chak De India was a landmark hit and did give her an extended stay under the spotlight. However, she has not been able to exude the staying power as a sparkler in her subsequent films.
Again Stuart Binny and his wife Mayanti Langer could be a celebrity couple with some gloss, but not enough sparkle. Same applies to Dinesh Karthik and his squash-champion wife, Dipika Pallikal. Just not well known enough together.
The other couple who showed a lot of promise but fizzled out are Sania Mirza and her husband cricketer Shoaib Malik. Their sparkling status is restricted largely to Pakistan where an endorsement for Nestle Everyday won them a lot of mind-space. But their appeal in India remains limited.
Among other sports one power couple that could have been sparkling are Golfer Jyoti Randhawa and his actor wife Chitrangada Singh. Again, a lack of sustained success in their respective fields is their undoing. And they are no longer together any way. Much the same story applies to Mahesh Bhupati-Lara Dutta and Leander Paes-Rhea Pillai … a bit of social buzz but no staying power.
It’s that consistency which puts Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma several cuts above the rest.
Or even take the ‘God’ of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin and
his wife Anjali could have been Cricket’s original first couple, but Anjali did not
quite break into the league despite her own independ-
ent credentials as a doctor.

Virushka – The power play
According to the Forbes India magazine’s Celebrity 100 list of 2018, Virat Kohli stands second to only Salman Khan with earnings of INR 228.09 crore; Anushka Sharma is at 16th with INR 45.83 crore making her the third highest-paid female actor in the country. But Virushka as a combined force are yet to make a huge splash on the endorsement space. While Myntra and Google Duo were the latest to sign on this duo, their earlier brand associations have been in businesses as diverse as fashion brand Manyavar Mohey to Shyam Steel. The couple scores the highest on the ‘Made For Each Other’ (MFEO) parameter in this study.
Ranbir-Alia – The new star couple in the orbit
Flipkart is the only brand to have brought the both of them together, but the couple show a lot of promise and rank highly on parameters that range from being seen as current, stylish, unique, prestigious and charming. However, the couple brand takes a knock on parameters like trustworthy and reliability that might be a dampener when it comes to endorsing brands in a space like financial services, where these parameters play a huge role. It’s probably Ranbir Kapoor’s playboy image that drags down the couple’s rating on these fronts, as the couple scores low on the parameter of being ‘respected’ too.

Saifeena – Travelling into time
While AirBnB and VIP have been two of the larger brands that chose the couple, it’s not hard to see why. They are seen as up-to-date and prestigious. But on the flipside, this couple is also seen as arrogant and score the least among the six couples featured in this chapter on the parameter of ‘trustworthy’. The other factor that they score lower is on ‘reliability’ probably to do with the mixed fortunes that Saif Ali Khan has experienced in the Hindi film industry.
Akshay and Twinkle– Sparkle and shine
She quit films and decided to take up a career in design and writing. But this has proved to be a masterstroke of sorts, just like her husband Akshay Kumar who made an effortless shift from action movies to comedy and is now working towards projecting a son-of-the-soil image in films and off-screen. This couple is however a surprise package as most brands from cooking oils to jewellery seem to take a liking for the duo. The couple score high on parameters like being made for each other or being up-to-date, charming and progressive. Negative marks, if any, come in the space of being ‘trustworthy’.

Deep-Veer – Scoring high
If there were full marks for being MFEO or being LBA (that’s loved by all), this pair could top the class. With an overall above aver-age score across all parameters and a below average rating in arrogant (showing a lack of arrogance) all builds up well for this couple. However, on the topic of endorsements, they never endorsed a single brand together till they got married. In fact, they have the unique distinction of endorsing rival brands across multiple categories. It’s only post marriage that they were seen together in their first ad for the Lloyd range of consumer durables. One could say their journey has just begun, in life, and in endorsements.
Abhi-Ash – Off colourWhile it starts like a perfect story for this couple with consistently high marks across parameters ranging from ‘straight forward’, ‘up-to-date’ and ‘traditional’ like in the movies, there is a twist in the tale. With very few endorsements to back like TTK Prestige cookers being one of them, this set loses its sparkle and slides down across most parameters with the decline most visible in areas like ‘reliability’ and ‘trust-worthiness’.

In May, 2019, the IIHB team conducted an interesting research on famous screen couples … with Raj Kapoor-Nargis the oldest favourites and Ranbir-Deepika,
topping the rankings for the most popular Bollywood couple in the current decade. Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol and Amitabh Bachchan-Rekha too came out on tops in their decades, with Amitabh-Parveen Babi being a second hit pairing for Big B.
Old is gold when it comes to Bollywood romances, or so our Love Aaj Kal survey would have us believe.
We surveyed 3,802 respondents, this summer, about their favourite on-screen couples in Hindi cinema, literally taking them on a nostalgia trip. The pairing of Raj Kapoor and Nargis received the most votes, followed by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, and then Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha.
The survey was conducted online. The respondents were asked to choose their favourite couple from each decade, starting from the 1950s. Respondents who were not familiar with the films of a certain decade did not vote for that time period. The largest number of respondents
were from the 46-55 age group.The top couple of the ’50s was Raj Kapoor and Nargis,
who were voted number one by 46% of the respondents. Another 18% rated them as number two and 24% as rank three, taking their aggregate score to 86%. The duo worked together in 16 films, including Barsaat (1949), Awara (1951) and Shree 420 (1955).
The runners-up were Madhubala and Dilip Kumar, who received an aggregate vote (across ranks one to three) of 95%. However, only 18% of the respondents rated them at the top, putting them in second place overall because rank one scores were valued higher than ranks two and three. In third place were Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman, with an aggregate score of 77%.

In second place were Hema Malini and Dharmendra, with 21% rank one votes and 79% aggregate votes. Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore came third, with 44% aggregate votes.
Bachchan also topped the ’80s, this time for his films with Parveen Babi. The duo received an aggregate score of 73%, followed by Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh (68%) and Anil Kapoor and Sridevi (64%).
Bachchan and Babi were seen together in Deewar (1975), Do Aur Do Paanch (1980) and Shaan (1980).
The list for the ’90s was led by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, with an aggregate of 81%. Their films together in this decade include Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla were in second place, with 79%, followed by Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit (50%).
Leading the pack for the 2000s were Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, who worked together on such films as Milenge Milenge (2010) and Jab We Met (2007). They received 51% of the aggregate votes, followed by real-life couple Ajay Devgn and Kajol (41%). Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan were in third place, with 40% of the votes.
For the ongoing decade, Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor topped the list with a 75% aggregate, followed by Padukone and real-life husband Ranveer Singh (74%). Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt came third, with 49% of the votes. Padukone and Kapoor’s joint credits include Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) and Tamasha (2015).
